Electronic structures of SiC nanoribbons have been studied by spin-polarized density functional calculations. The armchair nanoribbons are nonmagnetic semiconductor, while the zigzag nanoribbons are magnetic metal. The spin polarization in zigzag SiC nanoribbons is originated from the unpaired electrons localized on the ribbon edges. Interestingly, the zigzag nanoribbons narrower than $\sim$4 nm present half-metallic behavior. Without the aid of external field or chemical modification, the metal-free half-metallicity predicted for narrow SiC zigzag nanoribbons opens a facile way for nanomaterial spintronics applications.
Using ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory we have performed a theoretical investigation of substitutional boron and nitrogen impurities in silicon carbide (SiC) nanoribbons. We have considered hydrogen terminated SiC ribbons with zigzag and armchair edges. In both systems we verify that the boron and nitrogen atoms energetically prefer to be localized at the edges of the nanoribbons. However, while boron preferentially substitutes a silicon atom, nitrogen prefers to occupy a carbon site. In addition, our electronic-structure calculations indicate that (i) substitutional b…
We propose a natural way to create quantum-confined regions in graphene in a system that allows large-scale device integration. We show, using first-principles calculations, that a single graphene layer on a trenched region of $[000\bar{1}]$ $SiC$ mimics i)the energy bands around the Fermi level and ii) the magnetic properties of free-standing graphene nanoribbons. Depending on the trench direction, either zigzag or armchair nanoribbons are mimicked. This behavior occurs because a single graphene layer over a $SiC$ surface loses the graphene-like properties, which are restored solely over the …
We present a new method of producing a densely ordered array of epitaxial graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using vicinal SiC surfaces as a template, which consist of ordered pairs of (0001) terraces and nanofacets. Controlled selective growth of graphene on approximately 10 nm wide of (0001) terraces with 10 nm spatial intervals allows GNR formation. By selecting the vicinal direction of SiC substrate, [1-100], well-ordered GNRs with predominantly armchair edges are obtained. These structures, the high density GNRs, enable us to observe the electronic structure at K-points by angle-resolved photoem…
Using ab-initio calculations based on density functional theory, we investigate the effects of vacancies on the electronic and magnetic properties of zigzag SiC nanoribbons (Z-SiCNR). Single (V_C and V_Si) and double (V_SiV_Si and V_SiV_C) vacancies are observed to induce magnetism in Z-SiCNRs. The presence of a single V_Si does not affect the half-metallic behavior of pristine Z-SiCNRs; however, a single V_C leads to a transition from half-metallic to metallic behavior in Z-SiCNRs due to the edge Si p orbitals and the atoms surrounding the vacancy. The interactions of vacancies with foreign i…
We performed electronic structure calculations based on the first-principles many-body theory approach in order to study quasiparticle band gaps, and optical absorption spectra of hydrogen-passivated zigzag SiC nanoribbons. Self-energy corrections are included using the GW approximation, and excitonic effects are included using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We have systematically studied nanoribbons that have widths between 0.6 $\text{nm}$ and 2.2 $\text{nm}$. Quasiparticle corrections widened the Kohn-Sham band gaps because of enhanced interaction effects, caused by reduced dimensionality. Zig…
We present electronic structure calculations of few-layer epitaxial graphene nanoribbons on SiC(0001). Trough an atomistic description of the graphene layers and the substrate within the extended Hückel Theory and real/momentum space projections we argue that the role of the heterostructure's interface becomes crucial for the conducting capacity of the studied systems. The key issue arising from this interaction is a Fermi level pinning effect introduced by dangling interface bonds. Such phenomenon is independent from the width of the considered nanostructures, compromising the importance of c…
Thermal decomposition of vicinal 6H-SiC(0001) surfaces with off-angles toward the $[1\bar{1}00]$ direction results in the appearance of pairs of (0001) macroterraces and $(1\bar{1}0n)$ macrofacets covered with graphene, as follows. A carpet-like carbon layer grows on the surface, covering both the macroterraces and macrofacets; it forms $(6\sqrt{3} \times 6\sqrt{3})$ buffer layer on the former ones, whereas its partial periodic bonding with the SiC steps on the latter ones generates a pseudo-graphene nanoribbon (pseudo-GNR) array. The nanoribbons have a width of 2 nm and are aligned in the $[1…
A first principles many-body approach is employed to calculate the band structure and optical response of nanometer sized ribbons of SiC. Many-body effects are incorporated using the GW approximation, and excitonic effects are included using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Both unpassivated and hydrogen passivated armchair SiC nanoribbons are studied. As a consequence of low dimensionality, large quasiparticle corrections are seen to the Kohn-Sham energy gaps. In both cases quasiparticle band gaps are increased by up to 2 eV, as compared to their Kohn-Sham energy values. Inclusion of electron-hol…
Realization of post-CMOS graphene electronics requires production of semiconducting graphene, which has been a labor-intensive process. We present tailoring of silicon carbide crystals via conventional photolithography and microelectronics processing to enable templated graphene growth on 4H-SiC{1-10n} (n = 8) crystal facets rather than the customary {0001} planes. This allows self-organized growth of graphene nanoribbons with dimensions defined by those of the facet. Preferential growth is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurement…
We demonstrate that the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) provides a non-destructive, highly-efficient characterization method for large-area epitaxial graphene and graphene nanostructures on SiC substrates, which can be applied in ambient air without sample preparation and is insusceptible to surface charging or surface contamination. Based on the variation of reflected intensity from regions covered by interfacial layer, single layer, bilayer, or few layer graphene, and through the correlation to the results from Raman spectroscopy and SPM, CLSM images with a high resolution (around …
Three single-layer tetragonal silicon carbides (SiC), termed as T1,T2 and T3, are proposed by density functional theory (DFT) computations. Although the three structures have the same topological geometry, they show versatile electronic properties from semiconductor (T1), semimetal (T2) to metal (T3).The versatile properties are originated from the rich bonds between Si and C atoms. The nanoribbons of the three SiC also show interesting electronic properties. Especially, T1 nanoribbons possess exotic edge states, where electrons only distribute on one edge's silicon or carbon atoms. The band g…
Seven types of armchair graphyne nanoribbons are investigated with HSE06 functional. The quantum confinements in the graphyne nanoribbons open or increase the band gaps of the corresponding two-dimensional graphynes, which is crucial to high on/off ratio in electronic device operation. The major carrier mobilities of the graphyne nanoribbons with high percentage of sp hybridized carbon atoms are very large. The sparse linking pattern results in small number of frontier crystal orbitals and small deformation potential constants, which are responsible for the large carrier mobilities. Some graph…
The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity di…
We present a study of mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of two dimensional (2D), monolayer of silicon carbide (SiC) in honeycomb structure and its quasi 1D armchair nanoribbons using first-principles plane wave method. In order to reveal dimensionality effects, a brief study of 3D bulk and 1D atomic chain of SiC are also included. Calculated bond-lengths, cohesive energies, charge transfers and band gaps display a clear dimensionality effect. The stability analysis based on the calculation of phonon frequencies indicates that 2D SiC monolayer is stable in planar geometry. We found…
We have assessed mechanical bending as a powerful controlling tool for the electronic structure and optical properties of phosphorene nanoribbons. We use state-of-the-art density functional approximations in our work. The overall performance of the recently developed meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) mTASK [Phys. Rev. Mater. \textbf{5}, 063803 (2021)] functional establishes the method as a useful alternative to the screened hybrid HSE06 for better band gaps of phosphorene nanoribbons. We present a detailed and novel analysis to interpret the optical absorption of bent phosphor…
Based on first-principles calculations, electronic properties of edge-functionalized zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) on SiO2 substrate are presented. Metallic or semiconducting properties of ZGNRs are revealed due to various interactions between edge-hydrogenated ZGNRs and different SiO2 (0001) surfaces. Bivalent functional groups decorating ZGNRs serve as the bridge between active edges of ZGNRs and SiO2. These functional groups stabilize ZGNRs on substrate, as well as modify the edge states of ZGNRs and further affect their electronic properties. Band gaps are opened owing to edge states…

We present a minimal but crucial microscopic theory for epitaxial graphene and graphene nanoribbons on the 4H-SiC(0001) surface -- protopypical materials to explore physical properties of graphene in large scale. Coarse-grained model Hamiltonians are constructed based on the atomic and electronic structures of the systems from first-principles calculations. From the theory, we unambiguously uncover origins of several intriguing experimental observations such as broken-symmetry states around the Dirac points and new energy bands arising throughout the Brillouin zone, thereby establishing the ro…
We have performed a first-principles study on the deformation effect of the electronic structures of graphite nanoribbon arrays with zigzag edges on both sides, and the edge atoms are terminated with hydrogen atoms. A uniaxial strain is considered to have deformation effect on the graphite nanoribbons. We found that the antiferromagnetic arrangement of the spin polarizing edges of graphite nanoribbon is still more favorable than that with the ferromagnetic arrangement under deformation. We also learned that a tensile strain increases the magnetization of the graphite ribbon while a compressive…
One-dimensional (1D) materials have attracted significant research interest due to their unique quantum confinement effects and edge-related properties. Atomically thin 1D nanoribbon is particularly interesting because it is a valuable platform with physical limits of both thickness and width. Here, we develop a catalyst-free growth method and achieves the growth of Bi2O2Se nanostructures with tunable dimensionality. Significantly, Bi2O2Se nanoribbons with thickness down to 0.65 nm, corresponding to monolayer, are successfully grown for the first time. Electrical and optoelectronic measurement…
We demonstrate the preparation of both armchair and zigzag epitaxial graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on 4H-SiC using a polymer-assisted, sublimation growth method. Historically, the preparation of GNRs depended on the quality, or smoothness, of the surface changes during growth. The physical phenomenon of terrace step formation introduces the risk of GNR deformation along sidewalls, but the risk is heavily mitigated by this polymer-assisted sublimation method. Two widths (100 nm and 50 nm) are examined electrically and optically for both armchair and zigzag GNRs. Our electrical results support the…
The groundbreaking works in graphene and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) over the past decade, and the recent discovery of borophene draw immediate attention to the underexplored borophene nanoribbons (BNRs). We herein report a density functional theory (DFT) study of the geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of BNRs as a function of orientation (denoted as BxNRs and ByNRs with the orientation along x- and y-axis, respectively), ribbon width (Nx, Ny = 4 to 15), and hydrogenation effects. We found that the anisotropic quasi-planar geometric structure of BNRand its edge states profoundly gov…
We report combined first-principle and tight-binding (TB) calculations to simulate the effects of chemical edge modifications on structural and electronic properties. The C-C bond lengths and bond angles near the GNR edge have considerable changes when edge carbon atoms are bounded to different atoms. By introducing a phenomenological hopping parameter $t_{1}$ for nearest-neighboring hopping to represent various chemical edge modifications, we investigated the electronic structural changes of nanoribbons with different widths based on the tight-binding scheme. Theoretical results show that add…
Angle-resolved two-photon photoemission and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy are employed to derive the electronic structure of a sub-nanometer tomically precise quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbon (GNR) on Au(111). We resolved occupied and unoccupied electronic bands including their dispersion and determined the and gap, which possesses an unexpected large value of 5.1 eV. Supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the idealized infinite polymer and finite size oligomers an unoccupied non-dispersive electronic state with an energetic position in the m…
We present some computational simulations of graphene-based nanoribbons with a number of half-twists varying from 0 to 4 and two types of defects obtained by removing a single carbon atom from two different sites. Optimized geometries are found by using a mix of classical-quantum semiempirical computations. According with the simulations results, the local curvature of the nanoribbons increases at the defect sites, specially for a higher number of half-twists. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the nanostructures has significant variation when the number of half-twists increases for the defective nan…
Edge termination plays a vital role in determining the properties of 2D materials. By performing compelling ab initio simulations, a lowest-energy U-edge [ZZ(U)] reconstruction is revealed in the bilayer phosphorene. Such reconstruction reduces 60% edge energy compared with the pristine one and occurs almost without energy barrier, implying it should be the dominating edge in reality. The electronic band structure of phosphorene nanoribbon with such reconstruction resembles that of intrinsic 2D layer, exhibiting nearly edgeless band characteristics. Although ZZ(U) changes the topology of phosp…
Results of classical force field geometry optimizations for twisted graphene nanoribbons with a number of twists $N_t$ varying from 0 to 7 (the case $N_t$=1 corresponds to a half-twist Möbius nanoribbon) are presented in this work. Their structural stability was investigated using the Brenner reactive force field. The best classical molecular geometries were used as input for semiempirical calculations, from which the electronic properties (energy levels, HOMO, LUMO orbitals) were computed for each structure. CI wavefunctions were also calculated in the complete active space framework taking i…
Atomic and electronic structures of phosphorene nanoribbons are studied within density functional theory. These novel materials present different physical phenomena expected in two very different physical systems: one dimensional metallic chains and semiconductor surfaces. While `rugged' nanoribbons are semiconducting in their layer-terminnated structures, pure `linear' and `zigzag' nanoribbons are metallic due to metallic edge states. Linear nanoribbons undergo edge reconstruction and zigzag nanoribbons beyond a certain width undergo Peierls transition leading to opening of a band gap in the …
Nanoribbons (nanographite ribbons) are carbon systems analogous to carbon nanotubes. We characterize a wide class of nanoribbons by a set of two integers $<p,q>$, and then define the width $w$ in terms of $p$ and $q$. Electronic properties are explored for this class of nanoribbons. Zigzag (armchair) nanoribbons have similar electronic properties to armchair (zigzag) nanotubes. The band gap structure of nanoribbons exhibits a valley structure with stream-like sequences of metallic or almost metallic nanoribbons. These sequences correspond to equi-width curves indexed by $w$. We reveal a peculi…
The dramatic changes in electronic and magnetic properties are investigated using the first-principles calculations for (Cl, Br, I, At)-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons. The rich and unique features are clearly revealed in the adatom-dominated band structures, p-type doping, spin arrangement/magnetic moment, spatial charge distribution, and orbital- and spin-projected density of states. Halogen adsorptions can create the non-magnetic, ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic metals, being mainly determined by concentrations and edge structures. The number of holes per unit cell increases with the adat…
Large-scale and gap error free calculations of the electronic structure of vacancies in 4H-SiC have been carried out using a hybrid density functional (HSE06) and an accurate charge correction scheme. Based on the results the carbon vacancy is proposed to be responsible for the Z1/2 and EH6/7 DLTS centers
On-surface synthesis has recently emerged as an effective route towards the atomically precise fabrication of graphene nanoribbons of controlled topologies and widths. However, whether and to which degree structural disorder occurs in the resulting samples is a crucial issue for prospective applications that remains to be explored. Here, we experimentally identify missing benzene rings at the edges, which we name "bite" defects, as the most abundant type of disorder in armchair nanoribbons synthesized by the bottom-up approach. First, we address their density and spatial distribution on the ba…
We have studied the electronic structure of the interface between 6H-SiC{0001} and graphite. On n-type and p-type 6H-SiC(0001) we observe Schottky barriers of Phi_b,n^Si= 0.3+-0.1eV and Phi_b,p^Si=2.7+-0.1eV, respectively. The observed barrier is face specific: on n-type 6H-SiC(000-1) we find Phi_b,n^C=1.3+-0.1eV. The impact of these barriers on the electrical properties of metal/SiC contacts is discussed.
Graphene nanoribbons are the counterpart of carbon nanotubes in graphene-based nanoelectronics. We investigate the electronic properties of chemically modified ribbons by means of density functional theory. We observe that chemical modifications of zigzag ribbons can break the spin degeneracy. This promotes the onset of a semiconducting-metal transition, or of an half-semiconducting state, with the two spin channels having a different bandgap, or of a spin-polarized half-semiconducting state -where the spins in the valence and conduction bands are oppositely polarized. Edge functionalization o…
Driven by interactions due to the charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom, nanoscale inhomogeneity has emerged as a new theme for materials with novel properties near multiphase boundaries. As vividly demonstrated in complex metal oxides and chalcogenides, these microscopic phases are of great scientific and technological importance for research in high-temperature superconductors, colossal magnetoresistance effect, phase-change memories, and domain switching operations. Direct imaging on dielectric properties of these local phases, however, presents a big challenge for existing …
The electronic and magnetic properties of varying width, oxygen-functionalized armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) are investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Our study shows that O-passivation results in a rich geometrical environment which in turn determines the electronic and magnetic properties of the AGNR. For planar systems a degenerate magnetic ground state, arising from emptying of O lone-pair electrons, is reported. DFT predicts ribbons with ferromagnetic coupling to be metallic whereas antiferromagnetically coupled ribbons present three band gap familie…
Defect-induced states, defect-induced phase transition and excitonic states in bent transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanoribbons: density functional vs. many body theory
Recently developed processes have enabled bottom-up chemical synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with precise atomic structure. These GNRs are ideal candidates for electronic devices because of their uniformity, extremely narrow width below 1 nm, atomically perfect edge structure, and desirable electronic properties. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale chemically synthesized GNR field-effect transistors, made possible by development of a new layer transfer process. We observe strong environmental sensitivity and unique transport behavior characteristic of sub-1nm width GNRs.
The atomic structure, stacking sequences and electronic structure of folded graphene nanoribbons (FGNRs) are investigated by first-principles calculations. It reveals that the common configurations of all FGNRs are racket-like structures including a nanotube-like edge and two flat nanoribbons. Interestingly, the two flat nanoribbons can form new stacking styles instead of the most stable AB-stacking sequences for bilayer nanoribbons. The stability of the FGNRs are associated with several factors of initial structures, such as interlayer distance of two nanoribbons, stacking sequences, edge sty…
Graphene nanoribbon folds with single and double closed edges are studied using density functional theory methods. Van der Waals dispersive interactions are included via semi-empirical pairwise optimized potential. The geometrical phases of the single and double folded ribbons are obtained. The electronic structure in terms of energy needed for the folding process, van der Waals contribution, energy band gaps, and bandstructures are also calculated. The results are interpreted in terms of peculiarities of the structures and dispersion interactions. It is shown that significant modifications in…
The fabrication of atomically precise structures with designer electronic properties is one of the emerging topics in condensed matter physics. The required level of structural control can either be reached through atomic manipulation using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) or by bottom-up chemical synthesis. In this review, we focus on recent progress in constructing novel, atomically precise artificial materials: artificial lattices built through atom manipulation and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) realized by on-surface synthesis. We summarize the required theoretical background…
We examine the stacking order of multilayer graphene grown on the SiC$(000\bar{1})$ surface using low-energy electron diffraction and surface X-ray diffraction. We show that the films contain a high density of rotational stacking faults caused by three types of rotated graphene: sheets rotated $30^\circ$ and $\pm 2.20^\circ$ relative to the SiC substrate. These angles are unique because they correspond to commensurate phases of layered graphene, both with itself and with the SiC substrate. {\it Ab intio} calculations show that these rotational phases electronically decouple adjacent graphene l…
We have studied the electronic band properties of 2H-SiC and 4H-SiC silicon carbide polytypes. The structures of the electronic bands and density of state (DOS) using ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) were calculated for the first Brillouin zone both in the generalized gradient approximation and taking into account quasiparticle effects according to the GW scheme. The calculated bandgaps obtained using the GW approximation ${E_{\rm{g 2H-SiC}} = 3.17}$ eV and ${E_{\rm{g 4H-SiC}} = 3.26}$ eV agree well with experimental values. The shape and values of total DOS are within agreement with …
First-principles spin-polarized calculations have been performed on passivated Boron-Nitride Nanoribbons (BNNRs) with pentagon-heptagon line-defects (PHLDs) (also called as Stone-Wales line-defects). Two kinds of PHLDs, namely, even-line and odd-line PHLDs, have been added either at one edge or at both edges of BNNRs. Single-edge (with all its different possibilities, for example, for a BNNR with 2-line PHLD at single-edge there are 8 possibilities) as well as both-edge passivations have been considered for all the ribbons in this study by passivating each edge atom with hydrogen atom. Density…
By applying tight binding model, we investigate the electronic and transport properties of randomly distributed Stone-Wales (SW) defects on an armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR). We use four different functions, as distribution functions, to generate our SW defected nanoribbons. It is found that defect density can have a major effect on the conductance of our defected system, whilst other configurations such as defect orientation will contribute less. In our investigations. some special geometries are found, which shows interesting electronic and transport properties. These special cases alon…
We present energy filtered electron emission spectromicroscopy with spatial and wave-vector resolution on few layer epitaxial graphene on SiC$(000-1) grown by furnace annealing. Low energy electron microscopy shows that more than 80% of the sample is covered by 2-3 graphene layers. C1s spectromicroscopy provides an independent measurement of the graphene thickness distribution map. The work function, measured by photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), varies across the surface from 4.34 to 4.50eV according to both the graphene thickness and the graphene-SiC interface chemical state. At least…
Heterostructures made of stacked 2D materials with different electronic properties are studied for their potential in creating multifunctional devices. Graphene (G) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) van der Waals (vdW) systems have been extensively researched, including recent studies on synthesizing h-BN on graphene/SiC(0001) templates. These studies suggest that h-BN encapsulation could occur in addition to vdW epitaxy. This work presents theoretical research on G/h-BN heterostructures on SiC(0001) with a carbon buffer layer. The results show an energetic preference for h-BN encapsulation b…
We study analytically, based on the tight-binding model, the electronic band structure of armchair AA-stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbons (BLGNRs) in several regimes. We apply hard-wall boundary conditions to determine the discretion dominating on the Bloch wavefunctions in the confined direction. First we consider an ideal case, perfect nanoribbons without any edge deformation, and show that their electronic properties are strongly size-dependent. We find that the narrow armchair AA-stacked BLGNRs (similar to single-layer graphene nanoribbons) may be metallic or semiconducting depending on t…
We analyze the collective mode spectrum of graphene nanoribbons within the random phase approximation. In the undoped case, only metallic armchair nanoribbons support a propagating plasmon mode. Landau damping of this mode is shown to be suppressed through the chirality of the single particle wavefunctions. We argue that undoped zigzag nanoribbons should not support plasmon excitations because of a broad continuum of particle-hole excitations associated with surface states, into which collective modes may decay. Doped nanoribbons have properties similar to those of semiconductor nanowires, inc…
The successful fabrication of single layer graphene has greatly stimulated the progress of the research on graphene. In this article, focusing on the basic electronic and transport properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), we review the recent progress of experimental fabrication of GNRs, and the theoretical and experimental investigations of physical properties and device applications of GNRs. We also briefly discuss the research efforts on the spin polarization of GNRs in relation to the edge states.
Quasi one-dimensional nanoribbons are excellent candidates for nanoelectronics, therefore here we investigate by means of density functional theory the structure and electronic properties of a new kind of 1D ribbons, namely: centered honeycomb NiSe2 nanoribbons. Depending on the crystallography and atomic composition of the edges, these ribbons can belong to one of six (two) zigzag (armchair) families. In the zigzag families, after edge reconstruction, all the bare ribbons are metallic. The influence of edge hydrogen passivation produces band gaps in two of the six families. For the armchair n…
We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missing m-xylene units emerging during the cyclodehydrogenation step of the on-surface synthesis are the most common point defects. These "bite'' defects act as spin-1 paramagnetic centers, severely disrupt the conductance spectrum around the band extrema, and give rise to spin-polarized charge transport. We further show that the electronic conduct…
In the present work, the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the two- and one-dimensional honeycomb structures of recently synthesized MnO [Zhang et al. Nat. Commun., 20, 1073-1078 (2021)] are investigated by using first principles calculations. Our calculations show that the single layer 2D MnO crystal has a degenerate antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state and a relatively less favorable ferromagnetic (FM) state. In addition, magnetic anisotropy calculations unveil that the easy-axis direction for magnetism originating from unpaired electron states in manganese atoms is normal t…
We investigate electronic transport property of a graphene monolayer covered by a graphene nanoribbon. We demonstrate that electronic transmission of a monolayer can be reduced when covered by a nanoribbon. The transmission reduction occurs at different energies determined by the width of nanoribbon. We explain the transmission reduction by using interference between wavefunctions in the monolayer and the nanoribbon. Furthermore, we show the transmission reduction of a monolayer is combinable when covered by more than one nanoribbon and propose a concept of "combination of control" for nano-ap…
In this paper, we apply the first-principle theory to explore how the electronic structures of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) are affected by chemical modifications. The edge addends include H, F, N, NH$_{2}$, and NO$_{2}$. Our theoretical results show that the energy gaps are highly tunable by controlling the widths of AGNRs and addends. The most interesting finding is that N-passivated AGNRs with various widths are metallic due to the unique electronic features of N-N bonds. This property change of AGNRs (from semiconducting to metallic) is important in developing graphene-based devic…
We present our study on atomic, electronic, magnetic and phonon properties of one dimensional honeycomb structure of molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) using first-principles plane wave method. Calculated phonon frequencies of bare armchair nanoribbon reveal the fourth acoustic branch and indicate the stability. Force constant and in-plane stiffness calculated in the harmonic elastic deformation range signify that the MoS$_2$ nanoribbons are stiff quasi one dimensional structures, but not as strong as graphene and BN nanoribbons. Bare MoS$_2$ armchair nanoribbons are nonmagnetic, direct band gap s…
We report electronic structure and electric field modulation calculations in the width direction for armchair graphene nanoribbons (acGNRs) using a semi-empirical extended Huckel theory. Important band structure parameters are computed, e.g. effectives masses, velocities and bandgaps. For the three types of acGNRs, the pz orbital tight-binding parameters are extracted if feasible. Furthermore, the effect of electric field in the width direction on acGNRs dispersion is explored. It is shown that for the two types of semiconducting acGNRs, an external electric field can reduce the bandgap to a f…
We show by first-principles calculations that the electronic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Z-GNRs) adsorbed on Si(001) substrate strongly depend on ribbon width and adsorption orientation. Only narrow Z-GNRs with even rows of zigzag chains across their width adsorbed perpendicularly to the Si dimer rows possess an energy gap, while wider Z-GNRs are metallic due to width-dependent interface hybridization. The Z-GNRs can be metastably adsorbed parallel to the Si dimer rows, but show uniform metallic nature independent of ribbon width due to adsorption induced dangling-bond states on…
Germanene nanoribbons, with buckled structures, exhibit unique electronic properties. The complicated relations among the quantum confinement, the spin-orbital coupling, the magnetic quantization, the electric-field dominated quantum numbers, energy dispersions, energy gap, state degeneracy, and wave functions. Such mechanisms can diversify spatial charge distributions and spin configurations on distinct sublattices. There exist the spin-split quasi-Landau levels and the valley-dependent asymmetric energy spectrum in a composite electric and magnetic field, manly owing to the destruction of z=…
