Vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons are examined with density functional based tight-binding method and non-resonant bond polarization theory. We show that the recently discovered reconstructed zigzag edge can be identified from the emergence of high-energy vibrational mode due to strong triple bonds at the edges. This mode is visible also in the Raman spectrum. Total vibrational density of states of the reconstructed zigzag edge is observed to resemble the vibrational density of states of armchair, rather than zigzag, graphene nanoribbon. Edge-related vibrational states increase in energy which corroborates increased ridigity of the reconstructed zigzag edge.
We investigated the vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons by means of first-principles calculations on the basis of density functional theory. We confirm that the phonon modes of graphene nanoribbons with armchair and zigzag type edges can be interpreted as fundamental oscillations and their overtones. These show a characteristic dependence on the nanoribbon width. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a mapping of the calculated Gamma-point phonon frequencies of nanoribbons onto the phonon dispersion of graphene corresponds to an "unfolding" of nanoribbons' Brillouin zone onto that of gra…
The on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) allows for the fabrication of atomically precise narrow GNRs. Despite their exceptional properties which can be tuned by ribbon width and edge structure, significant challenges remain for GNR processing and characterization. In this contribution, we use Raman spectroscopy to characterize different types of GNRs on their growth substrate and to track their quality upon substrate transfer. We present a Raman-optimized (RO) device substrate and an optimized mapping approach that allows for acquisition of high-resolution Raman spectra, achiev…
Two-dimensional layered trichalcogenide materials have recently attracted the attention of the scientific community because of its robust mechanical, thermal properties and applications in opto and nanoelectronics devices. We report the pressure dependence of out-of plane Ag Raman modes in high quality few-layers titanium trisulfide (TiS3) nanoribbons grown using a direct solid-gas reaction method and infer their cross-plane thermal expansion coefficient. Both mechanical stability and thermal properties of the TiS3 nanoribbons are elucidated using phonon-spectrum analyses. Growing graphene nanoribbons from small organic molecules encapsulated in carbon nanotubes can result in products with uniform width and chirality. We propose a method based on encapsulation of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene from the liquid phase and subsequent annealing. This procedure results in graphene nanoribbons several tens of nanometers long. The presence of nanoribbons was proven by Raman spectra both on macroscopic samples and on the nanoscale by tip-enhanced Raman scattering and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic images.
Graphene nanoribbons are prepared inside boron nitride nanotubes by liquid phase encapsulation and subsequent annealing of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The product is imaged with high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and characterized by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon-containing material is detected inside the boron nitride nanotubes with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The observed structures twist under the electron beam and the characteristic features of nanoribbons appear in the Raman spectra.
Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), where detailed multi-wavelength Raman measurements are integrated by accurate ab initio simulations. Our study covers several ultra-narrow GNRs, obtained by means of solution-based bottom-up synthetic approach, allowing to rationalize the effect of edge morphology, position and type of functional groups as well as the length on the GNR Raman spectrum. We show that the low-energy region, especially in presence of bulky functional groups is populated by several modes, and a single radial breathing-like …
Nanometer-scale graphene objects are attracting much research interest because of newly emerging properties originating from quantum confinement effects. We present Raman spectroscopy studies of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) which are known to have nonzero electronic bandgap. GNRs of width ranging from 15 nm to 100 nm have been prepared by e-beam lithographic patterning of mechanically exfoliated graphene followed by oxygen plasma etching. Raman spectra of narrow GNRs can be characterized by upshifted G band and prominent disorder-related D band originating from scattering at ribbon edges. The D…
γ-graphdiyne is a 2D carbon structure beyond graphene: it is formed by sp and sp2 carbon atoms organized as hexagonal rings connected by linear links, and it is predicted to be a semiconductor. The lateral confinement of γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons significantly affects the electronic and vibrational properties. By means of periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations we investigate here the electronic band structure, the Raman and IR spectra of the γ-graphdiyne 2D crystal and related nanoribbons. We discuss the effect of the functional and basis set on the evaluation of the band gap, hi…
By analytically constructing the matrix elements of an electron-phonon interaction for the $D$ band in the Raman spectra of armchair graphene nanoribbons, we show that pseudospin and momentum conservation result in (i) a $D$ band consisting of two components, (ii) a $D$ band Raman intensity that is enhanced only when the polarizations of the incident and scattered light are parallel to the armchair edge, and (iii) the $D$ band softening/hardening behavior caused by the Kohn anomaly effect is correlated with that of the $G$ band. Several experiments are mentioned that are relevant to these resu…
The quantum corrections to the energies of the $Γ$ point optical phonon modes (Kohn anomalies) in graphene nanoribbons are investigated. We show theoretically that the longitudinal optical modes undergo a Kohn anomaly effect, while the transverse optical modes do not. In relation to Raman spectroscopy, we show that the longitudinal modes are not Raman active near the zigzag edge, while the transverse optical modes are not Raman active near the armchair edge. These results are useful for identifying the orientation of the edge of graphene nanoribbons by G band Raman spectroscopy, as is demonstr…
We present an approach for the efficient calculation of vibrational Raman intensities in periodic systems within density functional theory. The Raman intensities are computed from the second order derivative of the electronic density matrix with respect to a uniform electric field. In contrast to previous approaches, the computational effort required by our method for the evaluation of the intensities is negligible compared to that required for the calculation of vibrational frequencies. As a first application, we study the signature of 3- and 4-membered rings in the the Raman spectra of sever…
Al4SiC4 is a wide band gap semiconductor with numerous potential technological applications. We report here the first thorough experimental Raman and Infrared (IR) investigation of vibrational properties of Al4SiC4 single crystals grown by high temperature solution growth method. The experimental results are compared with the full theoretical analysis of vibrational properties based on Density Functional Theory calculations that are revisited here. We have obtained a good agreement between the experimental and calculated Raman phonon modes and this allowed the symmetry assignment of all the me…
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have attracted considerable interest as their atomically tunable structure makes them promising candidates for future electronic devices. However, obtaining detailed information about the length of GNRs has been challenging and typically relies on low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Such methods are ill-suited for practical device application and characterization. In contrast, Raman spectroscopy is a sensitive method for the characterization of GNRs, in particular for investigating their width and structure. Here, we report on a length-dependent, Raman ac…
Titanium trisulfide (TiS3) has recently attracted the interest of the 2D community as it presents a direct bandgap of ~1.0 eV, shows remarkable photoresponse, and has a predicted carrier mobility up to 10000 cm2V-1 s-1. However, a study of the vibrational properties of TiS3, relevant to understanding the electron-phonon interaction which can be the main mechanism limiting the charge carrier mobility, is still lacking. In this work, we take the first steps to study the vibrational properties of TiS3 through temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements of TiS3 nanoribbons and nanosheets…
We investigated the atomic structures, Raman spectroscopic and electrical transport properties of individual graphene nanoribbons (GNRs, widths ~10-30 nm) derived from sonochemical unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a high percentage of two-layer (2L) GNRs and some single layer ribbons. The layer-layer stacking angles ranged from 0o to 30o including average chiral angles near 30o (armchair orientation) or 0o (zigzag orientation). A large fraction of GNRs with bent and smooth edges was observed, while the rest…
Two-dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) has shown promising prospects for the next generation electronics and optoelectronics devices. The monolayer MoS2 can be patterned into quasi-one-dimensional anisotropic MoS2 nanoribbons (MNRs), in which theoretical calculations have predicted novel properties. However, little work has been carried out in the experimental exploration of MNRs with a width of less than 20 nm where the geometrical confinement can lead to interesting phenomenon. Here, we prepared MNRs with width between 5 nm to 15 nm by direct helium ion beam milling. High optical anisot…

The Raman spectrum of plutonium dioxide is studied both experimentally and theoretically. Particular attention has been devoted to the identification of high-energy modes at $2120$ cm$^{-1}$ and $2625$ cm$^{-1}$, the attribution of which has so far been controversial. The temperature dependence of both modes suggests an electronic origin. Crystal Field (CF) calculations reported in this work shows that these two modes can be respectively assigned to the $Γ_{1}$ $\rightarrow$ $Γ_{5}$ and $Γ_{1}$ $\rightarrow $ $Γ_{3}$ CF transitions within the $^{5}I_{4}$ manifold. These two modes, together wit…
The interaction of thioglycolic acid with the Au(111) surface is investigaged, and it is found that at the low coverage the molecule lies down on the substrate. If the mercaptan-hydrogen atom is eliminated, the resulting SCH_2COOH molecule is randomly oriented on the surface. If the carboxylic acid group in the HSCH_2COOH molecule is deprotonated instead, the HSCH_2COO^ molecule lies down on the surface. However, when the mercaptan-hydrogen atom in the HSCH_2COO^- molecule is removed, the resulting SCH_2COO^- molecule rises up to a certain level on the substrate. The calculated Raman vibration…
Raman scattering experiments have been carried out on single crystals of Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ as a function of temperature in the range of 320-50 K, covering the paramagnetic insulator-ferromagnetc metal transition at 250 K and the charge-ordering antiferromagnetic transition at 150 K. The diffusive electronic Raman scattering response is seen in the paramagnetic phase which continue to exist even in the ferromagnetic phase, eventually disappearing below 150 K. We understand the existence of diffusive response in the ferromagnetic phase to the coexistence of the different electronic pha…
We investigate the vibrational properties of VO2, particularly the low temperature M1 phase by first-principles calculations using the density functional theory as well as Raman spectroscopy. We perform the structural optimization using SCAN meta-GGA functional and obtain the optimized crystal structures for metallic rutile and insulating M1 phases satisfying all expected features of the experimentally derived structures. Based on the harmonic approximation around the optimized structures at zero temperature, we calculate the phonon properties and compare our results with experiments. We show …
The two-dimensional silicon allotrope, silicene, could spur the development of new and original concepts in Si-based nanotechnology. Up to now silicene can only be epitaxially synthesized on a supporting substrate such as Ag(111). Even though the structural and electronic properties of these epitaxial silicene layers have been intensively studied, very little is known about its vibrational characteristics. Here, we present a detailed study of epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) using \textit{in situ} Raman spectroscopy, which is one of the most extensively employed experimental techniques to charact…
We present a practical method to compute the vibrational resonant Raman spectra in solids with delocalized excitations. We apply this approach to the study of tetrahedrous amorphous carbon. We determine the vibrational eigenmodes and eigenvalues using density functional theory in the local density approximation, and the Raman intensities using a tight binding approximation. The computed spectra are in good agreement with the experimental ones measured with visible and UV lasers. We analyze the Raman spectra in terms of vibrational modes of microscopic units. We show that, at any frequency, the…
A Raman spectroscopy study was carried out for ZnGeN2 with direction of propagation along the (0001) crystallographic direction on hexagonal single crystal platelets obtained by reaction of gaseous ammonia with a Zn-Ge-Sn liquid alloy at 758 degree C. The sample geometry allowed measurement of the a2 and a1 Raman modes. First-principles calculations were carried out of the spectra. Measurements with crossed polarizers yielded spectra that agreed well with first-principles calculations of the a2 modes. Measurements with parallel polarizers should in principle provide the a1L modes. However, for…
Graphene nanoribbons have attracted attention for their novel electronic and spin transport properties1-6, and because nanoribbons less than 10 nm wide have a band gap that can be used to make field effect transistors. However, producing nanoribbons of very high quality, or in high volumes, remains a challenge. Here, we show that pristine few-layer nanoribbons can be produced by unzipping mildly gas-phase oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotube using mechanical sonication in an organic solvent. The nanoribbons exhibit very high quality, with smooth edges (as seen by high-resolution transmission e…
Based on the fact that both hardness and vibrational Raman spectrum depend on the intrinsic property of chemical bonds, we propose a new theoretical model for predicting hardness of a covalent crystal. The quantitative relationship between hardness and vibrational Raman frequencies deduced from the typical zincblende covalent crystals is validated to be also applicable for the complex multicomponent crystals. This model enables us to nondestructively and indirectly characterize the hardness of novel superhard materials synthesized under ultra-high pressure condition with the in situ Raman spec…
The vibrational properties of three sodosilicate glasses have been investigated in the framework of Density Functional Theory. The pure vibrational density of states has been calculated for all systems and the different vibrational modes have been assigned to specific atoms or structural units. It is shown that the Na content affects several vibrational features as the position and intensity of the $R$ band or the mixing of the rocking and bending atomic motions of the Si-O-Si bridges. The calculated Raman spectra have been found to agree with experimental observations and their decomposition …
In the last decade, hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as a new type of semiconductor for photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications. Unlike standard, tetrahedrally bonded semiconductors (e.g. Si and GaAs), the ionic thermal fluctuations in the halide perovskites (i.e. structural dynamics) are strongly coupled to the electronic dynamics. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain accurate and detailed knowledge about the nature of atomic motions within the crystal. This has proved to be challenging due to low thermal stability and the complex, temperature dependent struc…
We present polarization resolved Raman scattering study of surface vibration modes in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ single crystal and thick films. Besides the four Raman active bulk phonons, we observed four additional modes with much weaker intensity and slightly lower energy than the bulk counterparts. Using symmetry analysis, we assigned these additional modes to out-of-plane surface phonons. Comparing with first principle calculations, we conclude that the appearance of these modes is due to $c$-axis lattice distortion and van der Waals gap expansion near the crystal surface. Two…
Aligned graphene nanoribbon (GNR) arrays were made by unzipping of aligned single-walled and few-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. Nanotube unzipping was achieved by a polymer-protected Ar plasma etching method, and the resulting nanoribbon array was transferred onto any substrates. Atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging and Raman mapping on the same CNTs before and after unzipping confirmed that ~80% of CNTs were opened up to form single layer sub-10 nm GNRs. Electrical devices made from the GNRs (after annealing in H2 at high temperature) showed on/off current (Ion/Ioff) ratios up to 103 a…
The paper presents infrared reflectivity and micro-Raman scattering spectra of LiBC powder pellets. The experiment allowed assignment of frequencies of all infrared and Raman active zone center modes. Results are compared with available ab-initio calculations; prediction of large Born effective charges on the nodes of B-C graphene sheets is confirmed.
Edge termination plays a vital role in determining the properties of 2D materials. By performing compelling ab initio simulations, a lowest-energy U-edge [ZZ(U)] reconstruction is revealed in the bilayer phosphorene. Such reconstruction reduces 60% edge energy compared with the pristine one and occurs almost without energy barrier, implying it should be the dominating edge in reality. The electronic band structure of phosphorene nanoribbon with such reconstruction resembles that of intrinsic 2D layer, exhibiting nearly edgeless band characteristics. Although ZZ(U) changes the topology of phosp…
We show that Clar's theory of the aromatic sextet is a simple and powerful tool to predict the stability, the π-electron distribution, the geometry, the electronic/magnetic structure of graphene nanoribbons with different hydrogen edge terminations. We use density functional theory to obtain the equilibrium atomic positions, simulated scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images, edge energies, band gaps, and edge-induced strains of graphene ribbons that we analyze in terms of Clar formulas. Based on their Clar representation, we propose a classification scheme for graphene ribbons that groups c…
We present ab-initio density functional (DFT) calculations of the vibrational spectra of neutral Magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) molecule and of its Raman scattering intensities.
Elemental phosphorus nanostructures are notorious for a large number of allotropes, which limits their usefulness as semiconductors. To limit this structural diversity, we synthesize selectively quasi-1D phosphorus nanostructures inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that act both as stable templates and nanoreactors. Whereas zigzag phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably in CNTs with an inner diameter exceeding 1.4 nm, a previously unknown square columnar structure of phosphorus is observed to form inside narrower nanotubes. Our findings are supported by electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy obs…
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid sp-sp2 carbon systems are an appealing subject for science and technology. For these materials, topology and structure significantly affect electronic and vibrational properties. We investigate here by periodic density-functional theory (DFT) calculations we here investigate the Raman and IR spectra of 2D carbon crystals belonging to the family of graphdiynes (GDYs) and having different structures and topologies. By joining DFT calculations with symmetry analysis, we assign the IR and Raman modes in the spectra of all the investigated systems. On this basis, we disc…
We present some computational simulations of graphene-based nanoribbons with a number of half-twists varying from 0 to 4 and two types of defects obtained by removing a single carbon atom from two different sites. Optimized geometries are found by using a mix of classical-quantum semiempirical computations. According with the simulations results, the local curvature of the nanoribbons increases at the defect sites, specially for a higher number of half-twists. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the nanostructures has significant variation when the number of half-twists increases for the defective nan…
Recent progress in the on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) has given access to atomically precise narrow GNRs with tunable electronic band gaps that makes them excellent candidates for room-temperature switching devices such as field-effect transistors (FET). However, in spite of their exceptional properties, significant challenges remain for GNR processing and characterization. This contribution addresses some of the most important challenges, including GNR fabrication scalability, substrate transfer, long-term stability under ambient conditions and ex situ characterization. Antiferromagnetic materials with strong spin-phonon coupling have the potential for spintronic applications. Here, we report the structural, magnetic, and vibrational properties of 12R-BaTi0.4Mn0.6O3. Temperature-dependent magnetization data show the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Correlation between magnetic and vibrational properties are probed by using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurements. Two of the Raman active phonons show deviation from anharmonic behaviour at low temperatures which can be attributed to spin-phonon coupling. The strength of coupling i…
The vibrational properties of a series of push-pull polyynes have been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The simultaneous activation of a strong infrared and Raman mode, i.e. the collective vibration of CC bonds of the sp carbon chain, highlights the effectiveness of a polyyne bridge in promoting charge transfer between the electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) ends, thus suggesting that ad-hoc functionalized polyynes are worth being explored as building blocks of organic materials with attractive first-order optical nonlinearity. The optical, electronic, and vibrational properties of …
Strain is prominent in fabricated samples of two-dimensional semiconductors and it also serves as an exploitable tool for engineering their properties. However, quantifying strain and characterizing its spatially inhomogeneous distribution across a material are challenging tasks. Here, we report the lattice vibrational modes and corresponding Raman spectra of strained monolayer black phosphorus (phosphorene) by first-principles simulations. We show that frequencies of vibrational modes of phosphorene and their Raman scattering peaks exhibit substantial and distinct shifts according to the type…
Lattice structure and symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are of key importance to their fundamental mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Raman spectroscopy, as a convenient and nondestructive tool, however has its limitations on identifying all symmetry allowing Raman modes and determining the corresponding crystal structure of 2D layered materials with high symmetry like graphene and MoS2. Due to lower structural symmetry and extraordinary weak interlayer coupling of ReS2, we successfully identified all 18 first-order Raman active modes for bulk and monolaye…

We analyze the vibrational properties of diamondoid compounds via Raman spectroscopy. The compounds are interconnected with carbon-carbon single bonds that exhibit exceptionally large bond lengths up to 1.71 A. Attractive dispersion interactions caused by well-aligned intramolecular H--H contact surfaces determine the overall structures of the diamondoid derivatives. The strong van-der-Waals interactions alter the vibrational properties of the compounds in comparison to pristine diamondoids. Supported by dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) computations, we analyze and explain …
The multiferroic manganese tungstate (MnWO4) has been studied by high-pressure Raman spectroscopy at room temperature under quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 39.3 GPa. The low-pressure wolframite phase undergoes a phase transition at 25.7 GPa, a pressure around 8 GPa higher than that found in previous works which used less hydrostatic pressure-transmitting media. The pressure dependence of the Raman active modes of both the low- and high-pressure phases are reported and discussed comparing with the results available in the literature for MnWO4 and related wolframites. A gradual pressure-induc…
We present vibrational properties of Franckeite, which is a naturally occurring van der Waals heterostructure consisting of two different semiconducting layers. Franckeite is a complex layered crystal composed of alternating SnS$_2$ like pseudohexagonal and PbS-like pseudotetragonal layers stacked on top of each other, providing a unique platform to study vibrational properties and thermal transport across layers with mass density and phonon mismatches. By using micro-Raman spectroscopy and first-principles Raman simulations, we found that the PbS-like pseudotetragonal structure is mostly comp…
The symmetry group analysis is applied to classify the phonon modes of $N$-stacked graphene layers (NSGL's) with AB- and AA-stacking, particularly their infra-red and Raman properties. The dispersions of various phonon modes are calculated in a multi-layer vibrational model, which is generalized from the lattice vibrational potentials of graphene to including the inter-layer interactions in NSGL's. The experimentally reported red shift phenomena in the layer number dependence of the intra-layer optical C-C stretching mode frequencies are interpreted. An interesting low frequency inter-layer op…
In this paper we present the results on Raman-active modes calculation in achiral $(n,n)$ and $(n,0)$ carbon nanotubes (CNTs). vibrational spectra are derived as the eigenvalues of corresponding dynamical matrix at the $Γ$-point of Brillouin zone. Diagonal components and $α_{xy} (=α_{yx})$ are the only non-zero components of polarization tensor. Selection rules for Raman-active modes are determined by direct estimations of matrix elements responsible for the intensities of corresponding vibrational transitions. Few $E_{2g}$ modes can be non-Raman-active because of their ``fine'' vibrational st…
The recent finding of a 1-bond->2-phonon `percolation'-type behaviour in several random zincblende alloys, supporting an unsuspected 1-bond->2-mode behaviour in the bond length distribution, renews interest for a discussion of CuPt-type spontaneous ordering (CPSO) as a purely intrinsic effect. We investigate this key issue from both experimental (Raman scattering) and theoretical (first-principles bond length and phonon calculations) sides, focusing on Zn[1-x]Be[x]Se (0<x=0.92). Its large contrast in cation-anion bond lengths should stimulate CPSO to some extent, and is at the origin of a uniq…
