The symmetry group analysis is applied to classify the phonon modes of $N$-stacked graphene layers (NSGL's) with AB- and AA-stacking, particularly their infra-red and Raman properties. The dispersions of various phonon modes are calculated in a multi-layer vibrational model, which is generalized from the lattice vibrational potentials of graphene to including the inter-layer interactions in NSGL's. The experimentally reported red shift phenomena in the layer number dependence of the intra-layer optical C-C stretching mode frequencies are interpreted. An interesting low frequency inter-layer optical mode is revealed to be Raman or Infra-red active in even or odd NSGL's respectively. Its frequency shift is sensitive to the layer number and saturated at about 10 layers.
We use a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy experiment and model magnetism-phonon coupling calculations to study the rich magneto-Raman effect in the two-dimensional (2D) magnet $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We reveal a novel layered-magnetism-assisted phonon scattering mechanism below the magnetic onset temperature, whose Raman excitation breaks time-reversal symmetry, has an antisymmetric Raman tensor, and follows the magnetic phase transitions across critical magnetic fields, on top of the presence of the conventional phonon scattering with symmetric Raman tensors in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$…
2D layered materials have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their fascinating properties and potential applications. The interlayer interactions are much weaker than the intralayer bonds, allowing the as-synthesized materials to exhibit different stacking sequences (e.g. ABAB, ABCABC), leading to different physical properties. Here, we show that regardless of the space group of the 2D material, the Raman frequencies of the interlayer shear modes observed under the typical configuration blue shift for AB stacked materials, and red shift for ABC stacked materials, as the number of la…
Layered inorganic materials, such as the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have attracted much attention due to their exceptional electronic and optical properties. Reliable synthesis and characterization of these materials must be developed if these properties are to be exploited. Herein, we present low-frequency Raman analysis of MoS2, MoSe2, WSe2 and WS2 grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Raman spectra are acquired over large areas allowing changes in the position and intensity of the shear and layer-breathing modes to be visualized in maps. This allows detailed characterizat…
We report high pressure X-ray diffraction and a detailed systematic Raman measurements on $ReS_2$ sample, which is mechanically exfoliated from a single crystal. A few new Bragg peaks are observed to emerge above 6 GPa indicating a structural transition from distorted $1T$ to distorted $1T$$^{\prime}$ in triclinic structure. The same is corroborated by appearance of new Raman modes in the same pressure range. Softening of the Raman modes corresponding to $Re$ atom vibrations are observed in the distorted $1T$$^{\prime}$ phase in the pressure range 15-25 GPa. In the same pressure range the anom…
CuInP2S6 (CIPS) is an emerging layered material that exhibits ferrielectric ordering well above room temperature (Curie temperature TC ~ 315 K). When synthesized with Cu deficiencies, CIPS spontaneously segregates into CuInP2S6 and In4/3P2S6 domains (CIPS-IPS), which form self-assembled heterostructures within the individual lamellae. This re-structuring and resultant chemical pressure raises the Curie temperature and, depending on the Cu concentration, can be up to ~340 K for the highest Cu deficiency. In both CIPS and CIPS-IPS, the loss of polarization through the ferrielectric-paraelectric …
The evolution of the optical phonons in layered semiconductor alloys SnSe1-xSx is studied as a function of the composition by using polarized Raman spectroscopy with six different excitation wavelengths (784.8, 632.8, 532, 514.5, 488, and 441.6 nm). The polarization dependences of the phonon modes are compared with transmission electron diffraction measurements to determine the crystallographic orientation of the samples. Some of the Raman modes show significant variation in their polarization behavior depending on the excitation wavelengths. It is established that the maximum intensity direct…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have been extensively studied owing to their fascinating and technologically relevant properties. Their functionalities can be often tailored by the interlayer stacking pattern. Low-frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy provides a quick, non-destructive and inexpensive optical technique for stacking characterization, since the intensities of LF interlayer vibrational modes are sensitive to the details of the stacking. A simple and generalized interlayer bond polarizability model is proposed here to explain and predict how the LF Raman intensities depend on co…
Resonance Raman scattering, a very effective and sensitive technique for atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide, can be used to observe the phonons from the entire Brillouin zone. In addition to the significance of resonance effect on the Raman spectrum it may also be used to probe the electron-phonon coupling. Our study is devoted to understand the phonons in layered MoS2, especially for very low frequency range (i.e. below 100 cm-1), as a function of temperature under the resonance effect. Understanding the phonon-phonon and electron-phonon coupling and the effects of…
In this work, we performed temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy studies on three layered metal thiophosphates: CuInP2S6, CuCrP2S6, and CuInP2S6-In4/3P2S6 heterostructures. These materials are emerging multiferroics, with CuInP2S6 and CuInP2S6-In4/3P2S6 exhibiting room temperature ferrielectric polarization while CuCrP2S6 is both anti-ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic at low temperatures (<145 and <30 K, respectively). We studied two prominent peaks in the Raman spectra of these compounds, namely their P-P and P-S stretching modes. First order linear fits to the mode softening yielded coe…
Transition metal dichalcogenide, especially MoS2 has attracted lot of attention recently owing to its tunable visible range band gap and anisotropic electronic and transport properties. Here, we report a comprehensive inelastic light scattering measurements on CVD grown (horizontally and vertically aligned flakes) as well as single crystal flakes of MoS2, probing the anisotropic optical response via studying the polarization dependence intensity of the Raman active phonon modes as a function of different incident photon energy and flake thickness. Our polarization dependent Raman studies intri…
Lattice structure and symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are of key importance to their fundamental mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Raman spectroscopy, as a convenient and nondestructive tool, however has its limitations on identifying all symmetry allowing Raman modes and determining the corresponding crystal structure of 2D layered materials with high symmetry like graphene and MoS2. Due to lower structural symmetry and extraordinary weak interlayer coupling of ReS2, we successfully identified all 18 first-order Raman active modes for bulk and monolaye…
Magnetic excitations in layered magnetic materials that can be thinned down the two-dimensional (2D) monolayer limit are of high interest from a fundamental point of view and for applications perspectives. Raman scattering has played a crucial role in exploring the properties of magnetic layered materials and, even-though it is essentially a probe of lattice vibrations, it can reflect magnetic ordering in solids through the spin-phonon interaction or through the observation of magnon excitations. In bulk CrSBr, a layered A type antiferromagnet (AF), we show that the magnetic ordering can be di…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with diverse properties have attracted significant interest in the past decade. The layered materials discovered so far have covered a wide, yet discontinuous electromagnetic spectral range from semimetallic graphene, insulating boron nitride, to semiconductors with bandgaps from middle infrared to visible light. Here, we introduce new layered semiconductors, black arsenic-phosphorus (b-AsP), with highly tunable chemical compositions and electronic and optical properties. Transport and infrared absorption studies demonstrate the semiconducting nature of b…
Layered materials (LMs), such as graphite, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition-metal dichalcogenides, are at the centre of an ever increasing research effort, due to their scientific and technological relevance. Raman and infrared spectroscopies are accurate, non-destructive, approaches to determine a wide range of properties, including the number of layers and the strength of the interlayer interactions. Here, we present a general approach to predict the complete spectroscopic fan diagrams, i.e., the relations between frequencies and number of layers, $N$, for the optically-active shear a…
The group IV-VI compound SnSe, with an orthorhombic lattice structure, has recently attracted particular interest due to its unexpectedly low thermal conductivity and high power factor, showing great promise for thermoelectric applications. SnSe displays intriguing anisotropic properties due to the puckered low-symmetry in-plane lattice structure. Low-dimensional materials have potential advantages in improving the efficiency of thermoelectric conversion, due to the increased power factor and decreased thermal conductivity. A complete study of the optical and electrical anisotropies of SnSe na…
We perform a comparative experimental and theoretical study of the temperature dependence up to 700 K of the frequency and linewidths of the graphite E1u and E2g optical phonons (~1590 and 1580 cm-1) by infra-red (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. Despite their similar character, the temperature dependence of the two modes is quite different, being, e.g., the frequency shift of the IR-active E1u mode is almost twice as big as that of the Raman active E2g mode. Ab initio calculations of the anharmonic properties are in remarkable agreement with measurements and explain the observed behavior.
In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors have received much attention for their potential in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Wide-bandgap 2D semiconductors are especially important in blue and ultraviolet wavelength region, while there are very few 2D materials in this region. Here, monolayer \b{eta}-type zirconium nitride chloride (\b{eta}-ZrNCl) is isolated for the first time, which is an air-stable layered material with a bandgap of ~3.0 eV in bulk. Systematical investigation of layer-dependent Raman scattering of ZrNCl from monolayer, bilayer, to bulk r…
Al4SiC4 is a wide band gap semiconductor with numerous potential technological applications. We report here the first thorough experimental Raman and Infrared (IR) investigation of vibrational properties of Al4SiC4 single crystals grown by high temperature solution growth method. The experimental results are compared with the full theoretical analysis of vibrational properties based on Density Functional Theory calculations that are revisited here. We have obtained a good agreement between the experimental and calculated Raman phonon modes and this allowed the symmetry assignment of all the me…
Talc is an insulating layered material that is stable at ambient conditions and has high-quality basal cleavage, which is a major advantage for its use in van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we use near-field synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to investigate the structural and vibrational properties of talc crystals, ranging from monolayer to bulk, in the 300-750 cm-1 and <60 cm-1 spectral windows. We observe a symmetry crossover from mono to bilayer talc samples, attributed to the stacking of adjacent layers. The in-plane lattice par…
We present a comprehensive temperature dependent Raman measurements for horizontally aligned CVD grown layered MoS2 in a temperature range of 4 to 330 K under resonance condition. Our analysis of temperature dependent phonon frequency shift and linewidth suggest a finite role of three and four phonon anharmonic effect. We observed Davydov splitting of the out-of-plane (A1g ) and in-plane (E12g ) modes, attributed to the weak interlayer interaction, and reflected in the appearance of additional modes with decreasing temperature for both 3 layers and few layers system. We also observed that the …
Orhorhombic $α$-MoO$_3$ is a layered oxide with various applications and with excellent potential to be exfoliated as a 2D ultrathin film or monolayer. In this paper, we present a first-principles computational study of its vibrational properties. Our focus is on the zone center modes which can be measured by a combination of infared and Raman spectroscopy. The polarization dependent spectra are simulated. Calculations are also performed for a monolayer form in which "double layers" of Mo$_2$O$_6$ which are weakly van der Waals bonded in the $α$-structure are isolated. Shift in phonon frequenc…
Phonon spectra of CdSe nanoplatelets (2-6 ML) with the zinc-blende structure were calculated from first principles within the density-functional theory. It turned out that the Lamb modes in nanoplatelets are in fact optical rather than acoustic vibrations. Phonon spectra of the nanoplatelets show the appearance of a large number of low-frequency modes inherited from TA phonons in bulk CdSe. Calculations of the Raman spectra indicate a need to revise the interpretation of available experimental data. The largest contribution to the Raman spectra is provided by the quasi-Lamb modes with the $A_1…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, have attracted much interest from the viewpoints of fundamental physics and device applications. The establishment of new functionalities in anisotropic layered 2D materials is a challenging but rewarding frontier, owing to their remarkable optical properties and prospects for new devices. Here, we report the anisotropic optical properties of layered 2D monochalcogenide of germanium sulfide (GeS). Three Raman scattering peaks corresponding to the B3g, A1g, and A2g modes with strong polarization depen…
Layered materials such as graphite and transition metal dichalcogenides have extremely anisotropic mechanical properties owing to orders of magnitude difference between in-plane and out-of-plane interatomic interaction strengths. Although effects of mechanical perturbations on either intra- or inter-layer interactions have been extensively investigated, mutual correlations between them have rarely been addressed. Here we show that layered materials have an inevitable coupling between in-plane uniaxial strain and interlayer shear. Because of this, the uniaxial in-plane strain induces an anomalo…
We report results of the Raman measurements for SrRu$_2$O$_6$ having extraordinary high N$\acute{\textrm{e}}$el temperature for a layered material. No additional phonon modes were detected at the temperature of magnetic transition thus excluding lowering of the symmetry in the magnetically ordered phase. An unusual increase in softening and damping of some phonons as the temperature approaches $T_N$ indicate the appearance of a continuum of interacting electronic excitations at $T\geq300K$. We also observe an intensive Raman response at 2050 cm$^{-1}$. Analysis of the polarization dependence a…
Resonance Raman scattering, which probes electrons, phonons and their interplay in crystals, is extensively used in two-dimensional materials. Here we investigate Raman modes in MoSe$_2$ at different laser excitation energies from 2.33 eV down to the near infrared 1.16 eV. The Raman spectrum at 1.16 eV excitation energy shows that the intensity of high-order modes is strongly enhanced if compared to the first-order phonon modes intensity due to resonance effects with the MoSe$_2$ indirect band gap. By comparing the experimental results with the two-phonon density of states calculated with dens…
Raman spectroscopy is an integral part of graphene research. It is used to determine the number and orientation of layers, the quality and types of edge, and the effects of perturbations, such as electric and magnetic fields, strain, doping, disorder and functional groups. This, in turn, provides insight into all $sp^2$-bonded carbon allotropes, because graphene is their fundamental building block. Here we review the state of the art, future directions and open questions in Raman spectroscopy of graphene. We describe essential physical processes whose importance has only recently been recogniz…
The vibrational spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures can provide important information on their structure. In this work, experimental Raman and infrared spectra are compared with vibrational spectra of CdSe/CdS core/shell nanoplatelets calculated from first principles using the density functional theory. The calculations confirm the two-mode behavior of phonon spectra of nanostructures. An analysis of the experimental spectra reveals the absence of modes with a high amplitude of vibrations of surface atoms, which indicates their strong damping. Taking into account the difference in the…
The layered dichalcogenide MoS2 has many unique physical properties in low dimensions. Recent experimental Raman spectroscopies report an anomalous blue shift of the in-plane E2g1 mode with decreasing thickness, a trend that is not understood. Here, we combine experimental Raman scattering and theoretical studies to clarify and explain this trend. Special attention is given to understanding the surface effect on Raman frequencies by using a force constants model based on first-principles calculations. Surface effects refer to the larger Mo-S force constants at the surface of thin film MoS2, wh…
Infrared reflectivity spectra of cubic SrMnO$_{3}$ ceramics reveal 18 % stiffening of the lowest-frequency phonon below the antiferromagnetic phase transition occurring at T$_{N}$ = 233 K. Such a large temperature change of the polar phonon frequency is extraordinary and we attribute it to an exceptionally strong spin-phonon coupling in this material. This is consistent with our prediction from first principles calculations. Moreover, polar phonons become Raman active below T$_{N}$, although their activation is forbidden by symmetry in $Pm\bar{3}m$ space group. This gives evidence that the cub…
The vibrational modes in organic/inorganic layered perovskites are of fundamental importance for their optoelectronic properties. The hierarchical architecture of the Ruddlesden-Popper phase of these materials allows for distinct directionality of the vibrational modes withrespect to the main axes of the pseudocubic lattice in the octahedral plane. Here, we study the directionality of the fundamental phonon modes in single exfoliated Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite flakes with polarized Raman spectroscopy at ultralow-frequencies. A wealth of Raman bands is distinguished in the range from 15-150 c…
Detailed high pressure Resonance Raman ($RR$) Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction ($XRD$) studies are carried out on 3-4 layered $MoSe_2$ obtained by liquid exfoliation. Analysis of ambient $XRD$ pattern and $RR$ spectra indicate the presence of a triclinic phase along with its parent hexagonal phase. Pressure evolution of prominent Raman modes and their full width at half maximum ($FWHM$) show slope changes at about 13 GPa and 33 GPa, respectively. Slope change in the linear behavior of reduced pressure ($H$) with respect to Eulerian strain ($f_E$) is observed at about 13 GPa. A minimum in the…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are layered materials which show excellent potential for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. However, as many of the exciting features of these materials are controlled by the anharmonic effects, a proper understanding of the phonon properties and anharmonicity associated with these materials is essential for the proposed applications to be realized. We present here a comprehensive study on the phonon properties of two different TMDs; viz., MoS2 and MoTe2, as a function of temperature, laser excitations, and polarization, as well as flake-thi…
We observe a terahertz radiation from a hydrogen-bonded organic molecular ferroelectric 5,6-dichloro-2-methylbenzimidazole excited by a femtosecond laser pulse at room temperature. The emitted terahertz wave consists of three oscillatory components, the frequencies of which agree with those of Raman- and infrared-active phonon modes. This suggests that the terahertz radiation is attributed to polarization modulations by infrared-active phonons excited via the impulsive stimulated Raman scattering processes. By taking into account the Raman polarizability tensor and dipole-moment for each phono…
Raman spectroscopy is one of the most extended experimental techniques to investigate thin-layered 2D materials. For a complete understanding and modeling of the Raman spectrum of a novel 2D material, it is often necessary to combine the experimental investigation to density-functional-theory calculations. We provide the experimental proof of the fundamentally different behavior of polar 2D vs 3D systems regarding the effect of the dipole-dipole interactions, which in 2D systems ultimately lead to the absence of optical phonons splitting, otherwise present in 3D materials. We demonstrate that …
We report the observation and interpretation of new Raman peaks in few-layer tungsten diselenide (WSe2), induced by the reduction of symmetry going from 3D to 2D. In general, Raman frequencies in 2D materials follow quite closely the frequencies of corresponding eigenmodes in the bulk. However, while the modes that are Raman active in the bulk are also Raman active in the thin films, the reverse is not always true due to the reduced symmetry in thin films. Here, we predict from group theory and density functional calculations that two intra-layer vibrational modes which are Raman inactive in b…
In ionic Raman scattering, infrared-active phonons mediate a scattering process that results in the creation or destruction of a Raman-active phonon. This mechanism relies on nonlinear interactions between phonons and has in recent years been associated with a variety of emergent lattice-driven phenomena in complex transition-metal oxides, but the underlying mechanism is often obscured by the presence of multiple coupled order parameters in play. Here, we use time-resolved spectroscopy to compare coherent phonons generated by ionic Raman scattering with those created by more conventional elect…

Charge density wave (CDW) is a unique phenomenon mostly realized in two-dimensional (2D) metallic layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Here, we report on Raman spectroscopy of single crystal 1T-VSe2 and observed signature of commensurate CDW (C-CDW) and incommensurate (I-CDW) transition, in the temperature range of 50-120 K. The room temperature Raman spectra showed a sharp A1g mode ~ 206 cm-1 along with two new weak and broad Raman modes associated to Eg mode ~ 257 cm-1 and two-phonon mode (2ph) ~ 332 cm-1. The onset of I-CDW and C-CDW is estimated from resistance measurements su…

In this paper, we report on the infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of the lattice dynamics and the electronic structure of 3$d^9$ copper states below the fundamental absorption band. The lattice dynamics is characterized by a large number of phonons due to a low $P\overline{1}$ space group symmetry and a large unit cell with Z=1…
