Chalcogenides materials are being considered as some of the most promising systems for energy harvesting and energy conversion. Among them, the orthorhombic family of compounds X2Y3 (with X= Bi, Sb and Y= S, Se) has attracted special attention due to its interesting atomic structure, thermoelectric and optical properties. While Bi2S3 and Sb2Se3 have being already applied to solar cells, the new metastable Bi2Se3 is still a challenge due to the lack of data and knowledge on its properties. Here, the vibrational and structural properties of the orthorhombic metastable phase of Bi2Se3 were investigated by using Raman spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. We perform Raman spectrum measurements along in-situ thermal treatment on samples grown by electrochemical deposition. We show that by increasing the temperature occurs an improved crystallization in the orthorhombic structure, followed by a recrystallization to the usual rhombohedral phase. Our results point out for specific Raman modes of the orthorhombic phase. First principle computational results based on density functional theory support the experimental data and describe three singlet Raman active vibrational modes, Ag1, B2g and Ag2.
Single crystals of the methylammonium (MA) lead halides MAPbI3, MAPbBr3, and MAPbCl3 have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy with the aim of analyzing structural and dynamical aspects of processes that enable the ordering of the MA molecule in the orthorhombic crystal structure of these hybrid perovskites. Our temperature-dependent studies were focused on the analysis of the CH/NH rocking, C-N stretching, and CH/NH bending modes of the MA molecule in the 800-1750 cm-1 frequency range. They deliver a direct comparison of the behavior of the three halides on crossing the orthorhombic-…
The hybrid halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits a complex structural behaviour, with successive transitions between orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic polymorphs at ca. 165 K and 327 K. Herein we report first-principles lattice dynamics (phonon spectrum) for each phase of CH3NH3PbI3. The equilibrium structures compare well to solutions of temperature-dependent powder neutron diffraction. By following the normal modes we calculate infrared and Raman intensities of the vibrations, and compare them to the measurement of a single crystal where the Raman laser is controlled to avoid degradation of…
Despite vibrational properties being critical for the ab initio prediction of the finite temperature stability and transport properties of solids, their inclusion in ab initio materials repositories has been hindered by expensive computational requirements. Here we tackle the challenge, by showing that a good estimation of force constants and vibrational properties can be quickly achieved from the knowledge of atomic equilibrium positions using machine learning. A random-forest algorithm trained on only 121 metastable structures of KZnF$_3$ reaches a maximum absolute error of 0.17 eV/$\textrmÅ…
Orhorhombic $α$-MoO$_3$ is a layered oxide with various applications and with excellent potential to be exfoliated as a 2D ultrathin film or monolayer. In this paper, we present a first-principles computational study of its vibrational properties. Our focus is on the zone center modes which can be measured by a combination of infared and Raman spectroscopy. The polarization dependent spectra are simulated. Calculations are also performed for a monolayer form in which "double layers" of Mo$_2$O$_6$ which are weakly van der Waals bonded in the $α$-structure are isolated. Shift in phonon frequenc…
This is a representation of the first Raman and IR / FIR spectra for orthorhombic copper polysilicate, CuSiO3, measured at room temperature on polycrystalline samples and a comparison of the optical phonons with those observed for the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3. CuSiO3 represents a further example of a quasi-one-dimensional spin = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system. A mode assignment for the silicate is given. From the analysis of the Davydov doublets a reduced intralayer- to-interlayer bond strength of the silicate in comparison to the germanate is obtained allowing for different…
Group-VI monochalcogenides are attracting a great deal of attention due to their peculiar anisotropic properties. Very recently, it has been suggested that GeS could act as a promissory absorbing material with high input-output ratios, relevant features for designing prospective optoelectronic devices. In this work, we use the \emph{ab-initio} many body perturbation theory to study the role of the electron-phonon coupling on orthorhombic GeS. We identify the vibrational modes that efficiently couple with the electronic states responsible for giving rise to the first and second excitonic state.…
We present a theoretical first-principles method to calculate the free energy of a magnetic system in its high-temperature paramagnetic phase, including vibrational, electronic, and magnetic contributions. The method for calculating free energies is based on ab-initio molecular dynamics and combines a treatment of disordered magnetism using disordered local moments molecular dynamics (DLM-MD) with the temperature dependent effective potential (TDEP) method to obtain the vibrational contribution to the free energy. We illustrate the applicability of the method by obtaining the anharmonic free e…
Hafnia (HfO2) is a promising material for emerging chip applications due to its high-k dielectric behaviour, suitability for negative capacitance heterostructures, scalable ferroelectricity, and silicon compatibility. The lattice dynamics along with phononic properties such as thermal conductivity, contraction, and heat capacity are under-explored, primarily due to the absence of high quality single crystals. Herein, we report the vibrational properties of a series of HfO2 crystals stabilized with yttrium (chemical formula HfO2:xY, where x = 20, 12, 11, 8, and 0%) and compare our findings with…
A first-principles study of the vibrational modes of PbTiO_3 in the ferroelectric tetragonal phase has been performed at all the main symmetry points of the Brillouin zone (BZ). The calculations use the local-density approximation and ultrasoft pseudopotentials with a plane-wave basis, and reproduce well the available experimental information on the modes at the Gamma point, including the LO-TO splittings. The work was motivated in part by a previously reported transition to an orthorhombic phase at low temperatures [(J. Kobayashi, Y. Uesu, and Y. Sakemi, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 28}, 3866 (1983)]. W…
We report a simple technique for the synthesis of uniaxially textured, metastable hexagonal close-packed-like uranium thin films with thicknesses between 175-2800 Å. The initial structure and texture of the layers have been studied via X-ray diffraction and reflectivity and the time-dependent transitions of the samples into various orientations of orthorhombic $α$-U have been mapped by similar techniques. The final crystallographic orientations of each system and the timescales on which the transitions occur are found to depend on the lattice parameters of the original layer. The absence of th…
In this letter, we describe the stabilization of indium antimonide (InSb) in the high-pressure orthorhombic phase (InSb-III) at ambient conditions. Until now, InSb-III has only been observed above 9 GPa, or at around 3 GPa as a metastable structure during the phase transition from cubic zinc blende (InSb-I) to orthorhombic InSb-IV. The crystalline phase transition from InSb-I to InSb-III was driven by an ultrashort, laser-generated, non-hydrostatic pressure pulse. The transition occurred in preferred orientations locked to the initial orientation of the InSb-I crystal, breaking the symmetry of…
Aluminum hydride (alane) AlH_3 is an important material in hydrogen storage applications. It is known that AlH_3 exists in multiply forms of polymorphs, where $α$-AlH_3 is found to be the most stable with a hexagonal structure. Recent experimental studies on $γ$-AlH_3 reported an orthorhombic structure with a unique double-bridge bond between certain Al and H atoms. This was not found in $α$-AlH_3 or other polymorphs. Using density functional theory, we have investigated the energetics, and the structural, electronic, and phonon vibrational properties for the newly reported $γ$-AlH_3 structure…
We report on a theoretical and experimental study of CuMn-V antiferromagnets. Previous works showed low-temperature antiferomagnetism and semimetal electronic structure of the semi-Heusler CuMnSb. In this paper we present theoretical predictions of high-temperature antiferromagnetism in the stable orthorhombic phases of CuMnAs and CuMnP. The electronic structure of CuMnAs is at the transition from a semimetal to a semiconductor and we predict that CuMnP is a semiconductor. We show that the transition to a semiconductor-like band structure upon introducing the lighter group-V elements is presen…
We investigate the relative thermodynamic stability of the $3\times3$, $5\times5$, $7\times7$, $9\times9$ and infinitely large structures related to the dimers-adatoms-stacking faults family of Si$(111)$ surface reconstructions by means of first-principles calculations. Upon accounting for the vibrational contribution to the surface free energy, we find that the $5\times5$ structure is more stable than the $7\times7$ at low temperatures. While a phase transition is anticipated to occur at around room temperature, the $7\times7\rightarrow5\times5$ transformation upon cooling is hindered by the …
Metastable phases present a promising route to expand the functionality of complex materials. Of particular interest are light-induced metastable phases that are inaccessible under equilibrium conditions, as they often host new, emergent properties switchable on ultrafast timescales. However, the processes governing the trajectories to such hidden phases remain largely unexplored. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the formation of a hidden quantum state in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ upon photoexcitation. Our res…
The whole Al-Li phase diagram is predicted from first principles calculations and statistical mechanics including the effect of configurational and vibrational entropy. The formation enthalpy of different configurations at different temperatures was accurately predicted by means of cluster expansions that were fitted from first principles calculations. The vibrational entropic contribution of each configuration was determined from the bond length vs. bond stiffness relationships for each type of bond and the Gibbs free energy of the different phases was obtained as a function of temperature fr…
Hydrogen, introduced into crystalline (c-) or amorphous (a-) silicon (Si), plays an important role in improving Si properties for photovoltaics application. Low temperature proton implantation in c-Si and a-Si or H-doping of Si films introduces metastable hydrogen in the bond-centered-position (BCH), which dissociates with increasing temperatures into new metastable complexes. Using ab-initio molecular dynamics we report on the stability of BCH, a convenient hydrogen model system, in crystalline Si and its temperature-induced dissociation products in a wide temperature range, which includes te…
Magnetic structures of metastable perovskites ScCrO3, InCrO3 and TlCrO3, stabilized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, have been studied by neutron powder diffraction. Similar to the other orthochromites LnCrO3 (Ln=lanthanide or Y), these materials crystallize into the orthorhombic structure with Pnma10 symmetry. The spin configuration of the metastable perovskites has been found to be C-type, contrasting with the G-type structure usually observed in LnCrO3. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the Ctype structure found in ScCrO3 and InCrO3 is attributed to a ferrom…
In the last decade, hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as a new type of semiconductor for photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications. Unlike standard, tetrahedrally bonded semiconductors (e.g. Si and GaAs), the ionic thermal fluctuations in the halide perovskites (i.e. structural dynamics) are strongly coupled to the electronic dynamics. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain accurate and detailed knowledge about the nature of atomic motions within the crystal. This has proved to be challenging due to low thermal stability and the complex, temperature dependent struc…
As titanium is a highly utilized metal for structural light-weighting, its phases, transformation pathways (transition states), and structures have scientific and industrial importance. Impurities, pressure, and temperature control the phase stability and transition barriers in most industrial and geophysical materials - in Ti, interstitial O, N, or C retard while substitutional Al and V suppress the $ω$ phase. Using a proper solid-state nudged elastic band (SS-NEB) method employing double-climbing images (C2-NEB) combined with density-function theory (DFT+U) methods for accurate energetics, w…
We study the structure-stability relationship of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) clusters from a point of view of vibrations. By assuming the size up to $N=1610$, we demonstrate that the $N$-dependence of the maximum vibrational frequency reflects the geometry of the core (the interior of cluster) that will determine the overall geometry of the cluster. This allows us to identify the formation of non-icosahedral structures for $N\le 150$, the vacancy formation at the core for $N\ge 752$, and the transition from icosahedral to decahedral structures at $N = 1034$. We apply the maximum frequency analysis …
The metastable orthorhombic phase of hafnia is generally obtained in polycrystalline films, whereas in epitaxial films, its formation has been much less investigated. We have grown Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films by pulsed laser deposition, and the growth window (temperature and oxygen pressure during deposition and film thickness) for epitaxial stabilization of the ferroelectric phase is mapped. The remnant ferroelectric polarization, up to around 24 uC/cm2, depends on the amount of orthorhombic phase and interplanar spacing and increases with temperature and pressure for a fixed film thickness. The leaka…
We report the Pockels electro-optic properties of ZrO2 and HfO2 orthorhombic Pbc21 and rhombohedral R3m ferroelectric phases, and we compare them to the well-known LiNbO3 Pockels material from density functional theory calculations using the CRYSTAL suite of programs. Specifically, three essential processes are explicitly investigated: The electronic, the ionic (or vibrational), and the piezoelectric contributions. Our calculations reveal that the ionic part coming from the low frequency phonon modes contributes the most to the electro-optic coefficients of rhombohedral LiNbO3 and of orthorhom…
We present Raman and terahertz absorbance spectra of methylammonium lead halide single crystals (MAPbX3, X = I, Br, Cl) at temperatures between 80 and 370 K. These results show good agreement with density-functional-theory phonon calculations.1 Comparison of experimental spectra and calculated vibrational modes enables confident assignment of most of the vibrational features between 50 and 3500 cm-1. Reorientation of the methylammonium cations, unlocked in their cavities at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition, plays a key role in shaping the vibrational spectra of the different com…
Films of all-important compound hafnia (HfO2) can be prepared in an orthorhombic ferroelectric (FE) state that is ideal for applications, e.g. in memories or negative-capacitance field-effect transistors. The origin of this FE state remains a mystery, though, as none of the proposed mechanisms for its stabilization -- from surface and size effects to formation kinetics -- is fully convincing. Interestingly, it is known that doping HfO2 with various cations favors the occurrence of the FE polymorph; however, existing first-principles works suggest that doping by itself is not sufficient to stab…
Among the many ice polymorphs, ice I, that is present in nature at ambient pressure, occurs with two different structures, i.e. the stable hexagonal (Ih) or the metastable cubic (Ic) one. An accurate analysis of cubic ice Ic was missing until the recent discovery of an easy route to obtain it in a structurally pure form. Here we report a Raman spectroscopy study of the transformation of metastable ice Ic into the stable form Ih, by applying a very slow temperature ramp to the ice Ic samples initially at 150 K. The thermal behavior of the spectroscopic features originating from the lattice and …
We report first principles calculations of the structural, electronic, elastic and vibrational properties of the semiconducting orthorhombic ZnSb compound. We study also the intrinsic point defects in order to eventually improve the thermoelectric properties of this already very promising thermoelectric material. Concerning the electronic properties, in addition to the band structure, we show that the Zn (Sb) crystallographically equivalent atoms are not exactly equivalent from the electronic point of view. Lattice dynamics, elastic and thermodynamic properties are found to be in good agreemen…
Using evolutionary crystal structure prediction algorithm USPEX, we showed that at pressures of the Earth's lower mantle CaAl2O4 is the only stable calcium aluminate. At pressures above 7.0 GPa it has the CaFe2O4-type structure and space group Pnma. This phase is one of prime candidate aluminous phases in the lower mantle of the Earth. We show that at low pressures 5CaO * 3Al2O3 (C5A3) with space group Cmc21, CaAl4O7 (C2/c) and CaAl2O4 (P21/m) structures are stable at pressures of up to 2.1, 1.8 and 7.0 GPa respectively. The previously unknown structure of the orthorhombic 'CA-III' phase is al…
The discovery of ferroelectric HfO2 in thin films and more recently in bulk is an important breakthrough because of its silicon-compatibility and unexpectedly persistent polarization at low dimensions, but the origin of its ferroelectricity is still under debate. The stabilization of the metastable polar orthorhombic phase was often considered as the cumulative result of various extrinsic factors such as stress, grain boundary, and oxygen vacancies as well as phase transition kinetics during the annealing process. We propose a novel mechanism to stabilize the polar orthorhombic phase over the …
We have investigated Mg intercalation into orthorhombic V$_2$O$_5$, one of only three cathodes known to reversibly intercalate Mg ions. By calculating the ground state Mg$_x$V$_2$O$_5$ configurations and by developing a cluster expansion for the configurational disorder in $δ$-V$_2$O$_5$, a full temperature-composition phase diagram is derived. Our calculations indicate an equilibrium phase separating behavior between fully demagnesiated $α$-V$_2$O$_5$ and fully magnesiated $δ$-V$_2$O$_5$, but also motivate the existence of potentially metastable solid solution transformation paths in both pha…
We perform density functional calculations to investigate the structure of the inter-metallic alloy FeRh under epitaxial strain. Bulk FeRh exhibits a metamagnetic transition from a low-temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase at 350K, and its strain dependence is of interest for tuning the transition temperature to the room-temperature operating conditions of typical memory devices. We find an unusually strong dependence of the structural energetics on the choice of exchange-correlation functional, with the usual local density approximation (LDA) yielding the wro…
The experimental solubility limit of Zr in Al is well-known. Al3Zr has a stable structure DO23 and a metastable one L12. Consequently there is a metastable solubility limit for which only few experimental data are available. The purpose of this study is to obtain by ab-initio calculations the solubility limit of Zr in Al for the stable as well as the metastable phase diagrams. The formation energies of several ordered compounds AlxZr(1 x), all based on an fcc underlying lattice, were calculated using the FP-LMTO (Full Potential Linear Mu n Tin Orbital) method. Taking into account all the relax…
Gibbs free energy models are derived from the calculated electronic and phonon structure of two possible models of $γ$-alumina, a defective spinel phase and a hydrogenated spinel phase. The intrinsic vacancies and hydrogen in the two structural models give rise to a considerable configurational (residual) entropy and significantly contribute to thermodynamic stability and physical-chemical properties of $γ$-alumina, which was neglected in previous studies but considered in this work. The electronic densities of states, calculated using a hybrid functional for the two structural models of $γ$-a…
In materials science, it is often assumed that ground state crystal structures predicted by density functional theory are the easiest polymorphs to synthesize. Ternary nitride materials, with many possible metastable polymorphs, provide a rich materials space to study what influences thermodynamic stability and polymorph synthesizability. For example, ZnZrN2 is theoretically predicted at zero Kelvin to have an unusual layered "wurtsalt" ground state crystal structure with compelling optoelectronic properties, but it is unknown whether this structure can be realized experimentally under practic…
We characterize a novel orthorhombic phase (gamma) of NaAlH4, discovered using first-principles molecular dynamics, and discuss its relevance to the dehydrogenation mechanism. This phase is close in energy to the known low-temperature structure and becomes the stabler phase above 320 K, thanks to a larger vibrational entropy associated with AlH4 rotational modes. The structural similarity of gamma-NaAlH4 to alpha-Na3AlH6 suggests it acts as a key intermediate during hydrogen release. Findings are consistent with recent experiments recording an unknown phase during dehydrogenation.

We systematically study the pristine and doped chromium arsenide (CrAs) in six different crystal structures to investigate the structural, magnetic, and optical properties for real applications by first-principles calculations. First, we found that the ground-state structure is an orthorhombic MnP-type structure with antiferromagnetic spin order. The rocksalt structure is an low-energy metastable phase and a ferromagnetic metal with high spin polarization at the Fermi level. Secondly, the NiAs structure and MnP structure have a higher absorption coefficient than other structures in the infrare…
Phase diagrams for multi-component systems represent crucial information for understanding and designing materials but are very time consuming to assess experimentally. Computational modeling plays an increasingly important role in this regard but has been largely focused on systems with matching lattice structures and/or stable boundary phases. Here, using a combination of density functional theory calculations, alloy cluster expansions, free energy integration, and Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain the phase diagram of W-Ti, a system that features metastable boundary phases on both sides of…
Twelve two-dimensional group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers (SiS, SiSe, SiTe, GeS, GeSe, GeTe, SnS, SnSe, SnTe, PbS, PbSe, and PbTe) with a buckled honeycomb atomistic structure--belonging to symmetry group P3m1--and an out-of-plane intrinsic electric polarization are shown to be metastable by three independendent methods. First, we uncover a coordination-preserving structural transformation from the low-buckled honeycomb structure onto the lower-energy Pnm2$_1$ (or Pmmn for PbS, PbSe, and PbTe) phase to estimate {\em energy barriers} $E_B$ that must be overcome during such structural transfor…
In recent years, methods have been developed that allow first-principles electronic-structure calculations to be carried out under conditions of fixed electric field. For some purposes, however, it is more convenient to work at fixed electric displacement field. Initial implementations of the fixed-displacement-field approach have been limited to constraining the field along one spatial dimension only. Here, we generalize this approach to treat the full three-dimensional displacement field as a constraint, and compute the internal-energy landscape as a function of this multidimensional displac…
We have used first-principles methods to investigate the phase diagram of multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3 or BFO), revealing the energetic and vibrational features that control the occurrence of various relevant structures. More precisely, we have studied the relative stability of four low-energy BFO polymorphs by computing their free energies within the quasi-harmonic approximation, introducing a practical scheme that allows us to account for the main effects of spin disorder. As expected, we find that the ferroelectric ground state of the material (with R3c space group) transforms into …
The structural, electronic, and vibrational thermodynamic properties of the (ZnO)$_n$ (n=2-16) clusters are studied using density functional - full potential computations. The results show, small clusters up to $n=9$ stabilize in the 2D ring shape geometries while the larger clusters prefer the 3D cage like structures. The ring to cage structural cross over in ZnO clusters is studied by investigating the behavior of the Zn-O-Zn bond angle, the Zn-O bond strength, and the number of bonds in the systems. It is argued that 12 is the lowest magic number of ZnO clusters at ground state, while finit…
Zirconia (ZrO2) and hafnia (HfO2) are leading candidates for replacing SiO2 as the gate insulator in CMOS technology. Amorphous versions of these materials (a-ZrO2 and a-HfO2)) can be grown as metastable phases on top of a silicon buffer; while they tend to recrystallize during subsequent annealing steps, they would otherwise be of considerable interest because of the promise they hold for improved uniformity and electrical passivity. In this work, we report our theoretical studies of a-ZrO2 and a-HfO2 by first-principles density-functional methods. We construct realistic amorphous models usin…
By means of first-principles calculations, various properties of SrRuO3 are investigated, focusing on its lattice dynamical properties. Despite having a Goldschmidt tolerance factor very close to 1, the phonon dispersion curves of the high-temperature cubic phase of SrRuO3 show strong antiferrodistortive instabilities. The energetics of metastable phases with different tilt patterns are discussed, concluding that the coupling of oxygen-rotation modes with anti-polar Sr motion plays a key role in stabilizing the Pnma phase with respect to alternative rotation patterns. This not only explains th…
The tin sulfides represent a materials platform for earth-abundant semiconductor technologies. We present a first-principles study of the five known and proposed phases of SnS together with SnS2 and Sn2S3. Lattice-dynamics techniques are used to evaluate the dynamical stability and temperature-dependent thermodynamic free energy, and we also consider the effect of dispersion forces on the energetics. The recently identified π-cubic phase of SnS is found to be metastable with respect to the well-known orthorhombic Pnma/Cmcm equilibrium. The Cmcm phase is a low-lying saddle point between Pnma mi…
Using first principles structure searching with density-functional theory (DFT) we identify a novel $Fm\bar{3}m$ phase of Cu$_2$P and two low-lying metastable structures, an $I\bar{4}3d$--Cu$_3$P phase, and a $Cm$--Cu$_3$P$_{11}$ phase. The computed pair distribution function of the novel $Cm$--Cu$_3$P$_{11}$ phase shows its structural similarity to the experimentally identified $Cm$--Cu$_2$P$_7$ phase. The relative stability of all Cu--P phases at finite temperatures is determined by calculating the Gibbs free energy using vibrational effects from phonon modes at 0 K. From this, a finite-temp…
