We consider some nonlocal and nonpolynomial scalar field models originated from p-adic string theory. Infinite number of spacetime derivatives is determined by the operator valued Riemann zeta function through d'Alembertian $\Box$ in its argument. Construction of the corresponding Lagrangians L starts with the exact Lagrangian $\mathcal{L}_p$ for effective field of p-adic tachyon string, which is generalized replacing p by arbitrary natural number n and then taken a sum of $\mathcal{L}_n$ over all n. The corresponding new objects we call zeta scalar strings. Some basic classical field properties of these fields are obtained and presented in this paper. In particular, some solutions of the equations of motion and their tachyon spectra are studied. Field theory with Riemann zeta function dynamics is interesting in its own right as well.
We study existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions for linear equations in infinitely many derivatives. We develop a natural framework based on Laplace transform as a correspondence between appropriate $L^p$ and Hardy spaces: this point of view allows us to interpret rigorously operators of the form $f(\partial_t)$ where $f$ is an analytic function such as (the analytic continuation of) the Riemann zeta function. We find the most general solution to the equation \begin{equation*} f(\partial_t) ϕ= J(t) \; , \; \; \; t \geq 0 \; , \end{equation*} in a convenient class of functions, we de…
Applying the general framework for local zeta regularization proposed in Part I of this series of papers, we renormalize the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor (and of the total energy) for a scalar field in presence of an external harmonic potential.
In Part I of this series of papers we have described a general formalism to compute the vacuum effects of a scalar field via local (or global) zeta regularization. In the present Part II we exemplify the general formalism in a number of cases which can be solved explicitly by analytical means. More in detail we deal with configurations involving parallel or perpendicular planes and we also discuss the case of a three-dimensional wedge.
Applying the general framework for local zeta regularization proposed in Part I of this series of papers, we compute the renormalized vacuum expectation value of several observables (in particular, of the stress-energy tensor and of the total energy) for a massless scalar field confined within a rectangular box of arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we apply the usual perturbative methodology to evaluate the one-loop effective potential in a nonlocal scalar field theory. We find that the effect induced by the nonlocaliity of the theory is always very small and we discuss the consequences of this result. In particular we argue that, looking at one-loop corrections for matter fields, it is not possible to find signals of the nonlocality of the theory in cosmological observables since, even during inflation when energies are very high, nonlocality-induced corrections are expected to be very small.
Using the technology of harmonic analysis, we derive a crossing equation that acts only on the scalar primary operators of any two-dimensional conformal field theory with $U(1)^c$ symmetry. From this crossing equation, we derive bounds on the scalar gap of all such theories. Rather remarkably, our crossing equation contains information about all nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. As a result, we rephrase the Riemann hypothesis purely as a statement about the asymptotic density of scalar operators in certain two-dimensional conformal field theories. We discuss generalizations to the…
This is the first one of a series of papers about zeta regularization of the divergences appearing in the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of several local and global observables in quantum field theory. More precisely we consider a quantized, neutral scalar field on a domain in any spatial dimension, with arbitrary boundary conditions and, possibly, in presence of an external classical potential. We analyze, in particular, the VEV of the stress-energy tensor, the corresponding boundary forces and the total energy, thus taking into account both local and global aspects of the Casimir effect. In …
To motivate our discussion, we consider a 1+1 dimensional scalar field interacting with a static Coulomb-type background, so that the spectrum of quantum fluctuations is given by a second-order differential operator on a single coordinate r with a singular coefficient proportional to 1/r. We find that the spectral functions of this operator present an interesting behavior: the zeta function has multiple poles in the complex plane; accordingly, logarithms of the proper time appear in the heat-trace expansion. As a consequence, the zeta function does not provide a finite regularization of the ef…
In this paper we analyze the spectral zeta function associated with a Laplace operator acting on scalar functions on an N-dimensional Euclidean space in the presence of a spherically symmetric background potential. The obtained analytic continuation of the spectral zeta function is then used to derive very simple results for the functional determinant of the operator and the Casimir energy of the scalar field.
We investigate the spontaneous symmetry breaking in a nonlocal version of the scalar QED. When the mass parameter $m^2$ satisfies the requirement $m^2>0$, we find that all fields, including the Nambu-Goldstone field, acquire a non-zero mass dependent on the nonlocal scales. On the other hand, when $m^2=0$, we find that the nonlocal corrections to the masses are very small and can be neglected.
Recently a function was constructed that satisfies all known properties of a tree-level scattering of four massless scalars via the exchange of an infinite tower of particles with masses given by the non-trivial zeroes of the Riemann zeta function. A key ingredient in the construction is an even entire function whose only zeroes coincide with the non-trivial zeroes of the Riemann zeta function. In this paper we show that exactly the same conclusions can be drawn for an infinite class of even entire functions with only zeroes on the real line. This shows that the previous result does not seem t…
Nonlocal quantum theory of one-component scalar field in $D$-dimensional Euclidean spacetime is studied in representations of $\mathcal{S}$-matrix theory for both polynomial and nonpolynomial interaction Lagrangians. The theory is formulated on coupling constant $g$ in the form of an infrared smooth function of argument $x$ for space without boundary. Nonlocality is given by evolution of Gaussian propagator for the local free theory with ultraviolet form factors depending on ultraviolet length parameter $l$. By representation of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix in terms of abstract functional integral…
We consider a nonlocal theory of a scalar massive field in a flat spacetime background in the presence of an external potential and construct WKB solutions for this theory. We use a model in which the kinetic part of the scalar field action is modified by changing $\Box$ to $\Box f(\Box)$ operator. We discuss conditions when the corresponding form factor $f$ is chosen so that the theory does not contain new unphysical degrees of freedom. We applied the obtained WKB solutions for study energy levels of the field trapped by a one-dimensional potential and the probability of the barrier penetrati…
We express the nonlocal BMS charges of a free massless Klein-Gordon scalar field in 2+1 in terms of the Green functions of the polyharmonic operators. Using the properties of these Green functions, we are able to discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the fields that ensures the existence of the charges, and prove that one obtains a realization of the 2+1 BMS algebra in canonical phase space. We also discuss the transformations in configuration space, and show that in this case the algebra closes only up to skew-symmetric combinations of the equations of motion. The formulation of the charges, in…
Spherical systems in models of nonlocally corrected gravity
在S。Deser和R.伍达德,物理修订信函663,111301(2007)和S. Capozziello等人,Phys. Lett. B 671,193(2009)。
The zeta function regularization technique is used to study the Casimir effect for a scalar field of mass $m$ satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on a spherical surface of radius $a$. In the case of large scalar mass, $ma\gg1$, simple analytic expressions are obtained for the zeta function and Casimir energy of the scalar field when it is confined inside the spherical surface, and when it is confined outside the spherical surface. In both cases the Casimir energy is exact up to order $a^{-2}m^{-1}$ and contains the expected divergencies, which can be eliminated using the well established …
Spectral Zeta Functions for a Cylinder and a Circle
We relate the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing the 1-loop partition function of arbitrary spin fields on a rotating (Euclidean) BTZ background using the Selberg zeta function associated with $\mathbb{H}^{3}/\mathbb{Z}$, extending (1811.08433). Previously, Perry and Williams showed for a scalar field that the zeros of the Selberg zeta function coincide with the poles of the associated scattering operator upon a relabeling of integers. We extend the integer relabeling to the case of general spin, and discuss its relationship to the removal of non-square-integrable Euclidean …
Asymptotically nonlocal field theories represent a sequence of higher-derivative theories whose limit point is a ghost-free, infinite-derivative theory. Here we extend this framework, developed previously in a theory of real scalar fields, to gauge theories. We focus primarily on asymptotically nonlocal scalar electrodynamics, first identifying equivalent gauge-invariant formulations of the Lagrangian, one with higher-derivative terms and the other with auxiliary fields instead. We then study mass renormalization of the complex scalar field in each formulation, showing that an emergent nonloca…
We study a non-local scalar quantum field theory in flat spacetime derived from the dynamics of a scalar field on a causal set. We show that this non-local QFT contains a continuum of massive modes in any dimension. In 2 dimensions the Hamiltonian is positive definite and therefore the quantum theory is well-defined. In 4-dimensions, we show that the unstable modes of the non-local d'Alembertian are propagated via the so called Wheeler propagator and hence do not appear in the asymptotic states. In the free case studied here the continuum of massive mode are shown to not propagate in the asymp…
We investigate the gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild black hole in the nonlocal gravity model recently proposed by Deser and Woodard (DW-II). The analysis is performed in the localized version in which the nonlocal corrections are represented by some auxiliary scalar fields. We find that the nonlocal corrections do not affect the axial gravitational perturbations, and hence the axial modes are completely identical to those in General Relativity (GR). However, the polar modes get different from their GR counterparts when the scalar fields are excited at the background level. In s…
We consider a nonlocal scalar field theory inspired by the tachyon action in open string field theory. The Lorentz-covariant action is characterized by a parameter $ξ^2$ that quantifies the amount of nonlocality. Restricting to purely time-dependent configurations, we show that a field redefinition perturbative in $ξ^2$ reduces the action to a local two-derivative theory with a $ξ^2$-dependent potential. This picture is supported by evidence that the redefinition maps the wildly oscillating rolling tachyon solutions of the nonlocal theory to conventional rolling in the new scalar potential. Fo…
We consider nonlocal modification of the Einstein theory of gravity in framework of the pseudo-Riemannian geometry. The nonlocal term has the form $\mathcal{H}(R) \mathcal{F}(\Box)\mathcal {G}(R)$, where $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are differentiable functions of the scalar curvature $R,$ and $ \mathcal{F}(\Box)= \displaystyle \sum_{n =0}^{\infty} f_{n}\Box^{n}$ is an analytic function of the d'Alambert operator $\Box .$ Using calculus of variations of the action functional, we derived the corresponding equations of motion. The variation of action is induced by variation of the gravitation…
