In this paper we apply the usual perturbative methodology to evaluate the one-loop effective potential in a nonlocal scalar field theory. We find that the effect induced by the nonlocaliity of the theory is always very small and we discuss the consequences of this result. In particular we argue that, looking at one-loop corrections for matter fields, it is not possible to find signals of the nonlocality of the theory in cosmological observables since, even during inflation when energies are very high, nonlocality-induced corrections are expected to be very small.
Nonlocal gravity has been shown to provide a phenomenologically viable infrared modification of GR. A natural question is whether the required nonlocality can emerge from perturbative quantum loop corrections due to light particles. We show that this is not the case. For the value of the mass scale of the non-local models required by cosmology, the perturbative form factors obtained from the loop corrections, in the present cosmological epoch, are in the regime where they are local. The mechanism behind the generation of the required nonlocality must be more complex, possibly related to strong…
Within the superfield approach, we consider the nonlocal generalization of the Wess-Zumino model and calculate the one-loop low-energy contributions to the effective action. Four different nonlocal models are considered, among which only the first model does not reduce to the standard Wess-Zumino model when we take the parameter of nonlocality of the model, $Λ$, much greater than any energy scale; in addition, this model also depends on an extra parameter, $ξ$. As to the other three models, the result looks like the renormalized effective potential for the usual Wess-Zumino model, where the no…
We consider a nonlocal theory of a scalar massive field in a flat spacetime background in the presence of an external potential and construct WKB solutions for this theory. We use a model in which the kinetic part of the scalar field action is modified by changing $\Box$ to $\Box f(\Box)$ operator. We discuss conditions when the corresponding form factor $f$ is chosen so that the theory does not contain new unphysical degrees of freedom. We applied the obtained WKB solutions for study energy levels of the field trapped by a one-dimensional potential and the probability of the barrier penetrati…

In order to explain the late-time cosmological acceleration, we propose a new pure geometric gravity based on Deser-Woodard theory, in which the expansion of a matter-dominated universe can be accelerating. This new theory behaves as well as general relativity in solar system and gravitational waves, which is an important improvement over Deser-Woodard nonlocal gravity. Especially, for the simplest case, theoretical considerations determine all the parameters that appear in the Lagrangian.
In quantum field theory, a consistent prescription to define and deform integration contours in the complex energy plane is needed to evaluate loop integrals and compute scattering amplitudes. In some nonlocal field theories, including string field theory, interaction vertices contain transcendental functions of momenta that can diverge along certain complex directions, thus making it impossible to use standard techniques, such as Wick rotation, to perform loop integrals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the viability of several contour prescriptions in the presence of nonlocal vertices…
We study a non-local scalar quantum field theory in flat spacetime derived from the dynamics of a scalar field on a causal set. We show that this non-local QFT contains a continuum of massive modes in any dimension. In 2 dimensions the Hamiltonian is positive definite and therefore the quantum theory is well-defined. In 4-dimensions, we show that the unstable modes of the non-local d'Alembertian are propagated via the so called Wheeler propagator and hence do not appear in the asymptotic states. In the free case studied here the continuum of massive mode are shown to not propagate in the asymp…
We investigate the gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild black hole in the nonlocal gravity model recently proposed by Deser and Woodard (DW-II). The analysis is performed in the localized version in which the nonlocal corrections are represented by some auxiliary scalar fields. We find that the nonlocal corrections do not affect the axial gravitational perturbations, and hence the axial modes are completely identical to those in General Relativity (GR). However, the polar modes get different from their GR counterparts when the scalar fields are excited at the background level. In s…
We consider nonlocal modification of the Einstein theory of gravity in framework of the pseudo-Riemannian geometry. The nonlocal term has the form $\mathcal{H}(R) \mathcal{F}(\Box)\mathcal {G}(R)$, where $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are differentiable functions of the scalar curvature $R,$ and $ \mathcal{F}(\Box)= \displaystyle \sum_{n =0}^{\infty} f_{n}\Box^{n}$ is an analytic function of the d'Alambert operator $\Box .$ Using calculus of variations of the action functional, we derived the corresponding equations of motion. The variation of action is induced by variation of the gravitation…
Nonlocal RT gravity is a successful modified gravity theory, which not only explains the late-time cosmic acceleration but also behaves well in the solar system. Previous analysis generally assumes the auxiliary field $S_i$ vanishes at the cosmic background. However, we find the background $S_i$ is proportional to $a^2$ with the expansion of the universe. Then we discuss the influence of the nonzero background $S_i$ on the cosmic background evolution, the scalar and tensor perturbations. We find the cosmic background evolution is independent of $S_i$, and the influence of the nonzero backgroun…
We have recently presented a manifestly local and general coordinate invariant formulation of a nonlocal approach to the cosmological constant problem which has been proposed by Carroll and Remmen. In this article, based on our formulation, we investigate some quantum aspects of this approach to the cosmological constant problem. In particular, we explicitly evaluate quantum effects to the effective cosmological constant from matter fields at one-loop level, and show that the effective cosmological constant receives radiative corrections and is not stable against quantum corrections so that it…
We have recently presented a manifestly local and general coordinate invariant formulation of a nonlocal approach to the cosmological constant problem. In this article, we investigate quantum effects from both matter and gravitational fields in this formulation. In particular, we pay our attention to the gravitational loop effects and show that the effective cosmological constant is radiatively stable even in the presence of the gravitational loop effects in addition to matter loop effects. For this purpose we need to add the $R^2$ term and the corresponding topological action as an total acti…
Firstly, nonlocal field theories will be motivated, primarily in the gravity sector. We discuss how nonlocal theories of gravity can circumvent typical problems of finitely-many higher derivative theories and can, among other things, be either ghostfree and (potentially) renormalizable and yield a non-singular Newtonian potential. Afterwards we motivate finite temperature field theory, also known as thermal field theory, and study the thermodynamic behavior of both a local and a nonlocal scalar field theory. We compute (primarily leading-order) thermal corrections to the partition function for…
A recently introduced approach to the classical gravitational dynamics of binary systems involves intricate integrals (linked to a combination of nonlocal-in-time interactions with iterated $\frac1r$-potential scattering) which have so far resisted attempts at their analytical evaluation. By using computing techniques developed for the evaluation of multi-loop Feynman integrals (notably Harmonic Polylogarithms and Mellin transform) we show how to analytically compute all the integrals entering the nonlocal-in-time contribution to the classical scattering angle at the sixth post-Newtonian accur…

In this paper we will show an ultraviolet -infrared connection for ghost-free infinite derivative field theories where the Lagrangians are made up of exponentials of entire functions. In particular, for $N$-point amplitudes a new scale emerges in the infrared from the ultraviolet, i.e. $M_{\rm eff}\sim M_s/N^α,$ where $M_s$ is the fundamental scale beyond the Standard Model, and $α>0$ depends on the specific choice of an entire function and on whether we consider zero or nonzero external momenta. We will illustrate this by first considering a scalar toy model with a cubic interaction, and subs…
We have recently constructed a manifestly local formulation of a nonlocal approach to the cosmological constant problem which can treat with quantum effects from both matter and gravitational fields. In this formulation, it has been explicitly shown that the effective cosmological constant is radiatively stable even in the presence of the gravitational loop effects. Since we are naturally led to add the $R^2$ term and the corresponding topological action to an original action, we make use of this formulation to account for the late-time acceleration of expansion of the universe in case of the …
We give final shape to a recent formalism for deriving the functional forms of the primordial power spectra of single-scalar potential models and theories which are related to them by conformal transformation. An excellent analytic approximation is derived for the nonlocal correction factors which are crucial to capture the "ringing" that can result from features in the potential. We also present the full algorithm for using our representation, including the nonlocal factors, to reconstruct the inflationary geometry from the power spectra.
