To motivate our discussion, we consider a 1+1 dimensional scalar field interacting with a static Coulomb-type background, so that the spectrum of quantum fluctuations is given by a second-order differential operator on a single coordinate r with a singular coefficient proportional to 1/r. We find that the spectral functions of this operator present an interesting behavior: the zeta function has multiple poles in the complex plane; accordingly, logarithms of the proper time appear in the heat-trace expansion. As a consequence, the zeta function does not provide a finite regularization of the effective action. This work extends similar results previously derived in the context of conical singularities.
A brief survey of the zeta function regularization and multiplicative anomaly issues when the associated zeta function of fluctuation operator is the regular at the origin (regular case) as well as when it is singular at the origin (singular case) is presented. In the singular case, new results for the multiplicative anomaly are presented
Applying the general framework for local zeta regularization proposed in Part I of this series of papers, we renormalize the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor (and of the total energy) for a scalar field in presence of an external harmonic potential.
We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.
In this paper we analyze the spectral zeta function associated with a Laplace operator acting on scalar functions on an N-dimensional Euclidean space in the presence of a spherically symmetric background potential. The obtained analytic continuation of the spectral zeta function is then used to derive very simple results for the functional determinant of the operator and the Casimir energy of the scalar field.
We consider a class of singular Riemannian manifolds, the deformed spheres $S^N_k$, defined as the classical spheres with a one parameter family $g[k]$ of singular Riemannian structures, that reduces for $k=1$ to the classical metric. After giving explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the metric Laplacian $Δ_{S^N_k}$, we study the associated zeta functions $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. We introduce a general method to deal with some classes of simple and double abstract zeta functions, generalizing the ones appearing in $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. An application of this method allows to obtain…
Lattice field theory is a very powerful tool to study Feynman's path integral non-perturbatively. However, it usually requires Euclidean background metrics to be well-defined. On the other hand, a recently developed regularization scheme based on Fourier integral operator $ζ$-functions can treat Feynman's path integral non-pertubatively in Lorentzian background metrics. In this article, we formally $ζ$-regularize lattice theories with Lorentzian backgrounds and identify conditions for the Fourier integral operator $ζ$-function regularization to be applicable. Furthermore, we show that the clas…
We study the self adjoint extensions of a class of non maximal multiplication operators with boundary conditions. We show that these extensions correspond to singular rank one perturbations (in the sense of \cite{AK}) of the Laplace operator, namely the formal Laplacian with a singular delta potential, on the half space. This construction is the appropriate setting to describe the Casimir effect related to a massless scalar field in the flat space time with an infinite conducting plate and in the presence of a point like "impurity". We use the relative zeta determinant (as defined in \cite{Mul…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior (in the sense of meromorphic functions) of the zeta function of a Laplace-type operator on a closed manifold when the underlying manifold is stretched in the direction normal to a dividing hypersurface, separating the manifold into two manifolds with infinite cylindrical ends. We also study the related problem on a manifold with boundary as the manifold is stretched in the direction normal to its boundary, forming a manifold with an infinite cylindrical end. Such singular deformations fall under the category of "analytic surgery", developed origin…
In this article we analyze the resolvent, the heat kernel and the spectral zeta function of the operator $-d^2/dr^2 - 1/(4r^2)$ over the finite interval. The structural properties of these spectral functions depend strongly on the chosen self-adjoint realization of the operator, a choice being made necessary because of the singular potential present. Only for the Friedrichs realization standard properties are reproduced, for all other realizations highly nonstandard properties are observed. In particular, for $k\in \N$ we find terms like $(\log t)^{-k}$ in the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of…
A new formula relating the analytic continuation of the Hurwitz zeta function to the Euler gamma function and a polylogarithmic function is presented. In particular, the values of the first derivative of the real part of the analytic continuation of the Hurwitz zeta function for even negative integers and the imaginary one for odd negative integers are explicitly given. The result can be of interest both on mathematical and physical side, because we are able to apply our new formulas in the context of the Spectral Zeta Function regularization, computing the exact pair production rate per space…
The goal of this paper is to compute the zeta function determinant for the massive Laplacian on Riemann caps (or spherical suspensions). These manifolds are defined as compact and boundaryless $D-$dimensional manifolds deformed by a singular Riemannian structure. The deformed spheres, considered previously in the literature, belong to this class. After presenting the geometry and discussing the spectrum of the Laplacian, we illustrate a method to compute its zeta regularized determinant. The special case of the deformed sphere is recovered as a limit of our general formulas.
We present a derivation of the numerical phenomenon that differences between the Riemann zeta function's nontrivial zeros tend to avoid being equal to the imaginary parts of the zeros themselves, a property called statistical "repulsion" between the zeros and their differences. Our derivation relies on the statistical properties of the prime zeta function, whose singularity structure specifies the positions of the Riemann zeros. We show that the prime zeta function on the critical line is asymptotically normally distributed with a covariance function that is closely approximated by the logarit…
In this work, we mainly study the one-loop effective action for real scalar theories in non-homogeneous backgrounds in odd dimensions. It is shown that through the method studied in Ref. [1], it is possible to obtain a unified result for the one-loop correction to the Euclidean effective action in 2+1 dimensions. Our result simplifies into the ones given in the literature calculated via different techniques based on some assumptions of field and its derivative. The one-loop correction is obtained in (2n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space-times, as well. Moreover, its generic behavior is discussed …
We discuss a specific class of regular-singular Laplace-type operators with matrix coefficients. Their zeta determinants were studied by K. Kirsten, P. Loya and J. Park on the basis of the Contour integral method, with general boundary conditions at the singularity and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the regular boundary. We complete the arguments of Kirsten, Loya and Park by explicitly verifying that the Contour integral method indeed applies in the regular-singular setup. Further we extend the zeta determinant computations to generalized Neumann boundary conditions at the regular boundary a…
We introduce a notion of integration on the category of proper birational maps to a given variety $X$, with value in an associated Chow group. Applications include new birational invariants; comparison results for Chern classes and numbers of nonsingular birational varieties; `stringy' Chern classes of singular varieties; and a zeta function specializing to the topological zeta function. In its simplest manifestation, the integral gives a new expression for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of possibly singular varieties, placing them into a context in which a `change-of-variable' formula hold…
The Selberg zeta function and trace formula are powerful tools used to calculate kinetic operator spectra and quasinormal modes on hyperbolic quotient spacetimes. In this article, we extend this formalism to non-hyperbolic quotients by constructing a Selberg zeta function for warped AdS$_3$ black holes. We also consider the so-called self-dual solutions, which are of interest in connection to near-horizon extremal Kerr. We establish a map between the zeta function zeroes and the quasinormal modes on warped AdS$_3$ black hole backgrounds. In the process, we use a method involving conformal coor…
We use exact WKB analysis to derive some concrete formulae in singular quantum perturbation theory, for Schrödinger eigenvalue problems on the real line with polynomial potentials of the form $(q^M + g q^N)$, where $N>M>0$ even, and $g>0$. Mainly, we establish the $g \to 0$ limiting forms of global spectral functions such as the zeta-regularized determinants and some spectral zeta functions.
In 2009, the first author introduced a new class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions', associated with arbitrary compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. It represents a natural, but nontrivial extension of the theory of `geometric zeta functions' of bounded fractal strings. In this memoir, we introduce the class of `relative fractal drums' (or RFDs), which contains the classes of bounded fractal strings and of compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces as special cases. Furthermore, the associated (relative) distance zeta functions of RFDs, extend (i…
By using ideas and strong results borrowed from the classical moment problem, we show how -under very general conditions- a discrete number of values of the spectral zeta function (associated generically with a non-decreasing sequence of numbers, and not necessarily with an operator) yields all the moments corresponding to the density of states, as well as those of the partition function of the sequence (the two basic quantities that are always considered in a quantum mechanical context). This goes beyond the well known expression of the small-t asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel of an op…
We present a calculation of the zeta function and of the functional determinant for a Laplace-type differential operator, corresponding to a scalar field in a higher dimensional de Sitter brane background, which consists of a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime bounded by a de Sitter section, representing a brane. Contrary to the existing examples, which all make use of conformal transformations, we evaluate the zeta function working directly with the higher dimensional wave operator. We also consider a generic mass term and coupling to curvature, generalizing previous results. Th…
Multiple zeta values (MZVs) in the usual sense are the special values of multiple variable zeta functions at positive integers. Their extensive studies are important in both mathematics and physics with broad connections and applications. In contrast, very little is known about the special values of multiple zeta functions at non-positive integers since the values are usually singular. We define and study multiple zeta functions at any integer values by adapting methods of renormalization from quantum field theory, and following the Hopf algebra approach of Connes and Kreimer. This definition …
We postulate the existence of a self-adjoint operator associated to a system with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom whose spectrum is the sequence of the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We assume that it describes a massive scalar field coupled to a background field in a $(d+1)$-dimensional flat space-time. The scalar field is confined to the interval $[0,a]$ in one dimension and is not restricted in the other dimensions. The renormalized zero-point energy of this system is presented using techniques of dimensional and analytic regularization. In even dimensional s…
For any function that is real for real x, positivity of Tuck's function Q(x)=D'^2(x)/(D'^2(x)-D"(x) D(x)) is a condition for the absence of the complex zeros close to the real axis. Study of the probability distribution P(Q), for D(x) with N zeros corresponding to eigenvalues of the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE), supports Tuck's observation that large values of Q are very rare for the Riemann zeros. P(Q) has singularities at Q=0, Q=1 and Q=N. The moments (averages of Q^m) are much smaller for the GUE than for uncorrelated random (Poisson-distributed) zeros. For the Poisson case, the large-N …
We study the relative zeta function for the couple of operators $A_0$ and $A_α$, where $A_0$ is the free unconstrained Laplacian in $L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ ($d \geq 2$) and $A_α$ is the singular perturbation of $A_0$ associated to the presence of a delta interaction supported by a hyperplane. In our setting the operatorial parameter $α$, which is related to the strength of the perturbation, is of the kind $α=α(-Δ_{\parallel})$, where $-Δ_{\parallel}$ is the free Laplacian in $L^2(\mathbf{R}^{d-1})$. Thus $α$ may depend on the components of the wave vector parallel to hyperplane; in this sense $A_α…
