We study the essential singularities of geometric zeta functions $ζ_{\mathcal L}$, associated with bounded fractal strings $\mathcal L$. For any three prescribed real numbers $D_{\infty}$, $D_1$ and $D$ in $[0,1]$, such that $D_{\infty}<D_1\le D$, we construct a bounded fractal string $\mathcal L$ such that $D_{\rm par}(ζ_{\mathcal L})=D_{\infty}$, $D_{\rm mer}(ζ_{\mathcal L})=D_1$ and $D(ζ_{\mathcal L})=D$. Here, $D(ζ_{\mathcal L})$ is the abscissa of absolute convergence of $ζ_{\mathcal L}$, $D_{\rm mer}(ζ_{\mathcal L})$ is the abscissa of meromorphic continuation of $ζ_{\mathcal L}$, while $D_{\rm par}(ζ_{\mathcal L})$ is the infimum of all positive real numbers $α$ such that $ζ_{\mathcal L}$ is holomorphic in the open right half-plane $\{{\rm Re}\, s>α\}$, except for possible isolated singularities in this half-plane. Defining $\mathcal L$ as the disjoint union of a sequence of suitable generalized Cantor strings, we show that the set of accumulation points of the set $S_{\infty}$ of essential singularities of $ζ_{\mathcal L}$, contained in the open right half-plane $\{{\rm Re}\, s>D_{\infty}\}$, coincides with the vertical line $\{{\rm Re}\, s=D_{\infty}\}$. We extend this construction to the case of distance zeta functions $ζ_A$ of compact sets $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, for any positive integer $N$.
For a Borel measure on the unit interval and a sequence of scales that tend to zero, we define a one-parameter family of zeta functions called multifractal zeta functions. These functions are a first attempt to associate a zeta function to certain multifractal measures. However, we primarily show that they associate a new zeta function, the topological zeta function, to a fractal string in order to take into account the topology of its fractal boundary. This expands upon the geometric information garnered by the traditional geometric zeta function of a fractal string in the theory of complex d…
We investigate the spectral zeta function of fractal differential operators such as the Laplacian on the unbounded (i.e., infinite) Sierpinski gasket and a self-similar Sturm-Liouville operator associated with a fractal self-similar measure on the half-line. In the latter case, C. Sabot discovered the relation between the spectrum of this operator and the iteration of a rational map of several complex variables, called the renormalization map. We obtain a factorization of the spectral zeta function of such an operator, expressed in terms of the Dirac delta hyperfunction, a geometric zeta funct…
On fractals, spectral functions such as heat kernels and zeta functions exhibit novel features, very different from their behaviour on regular smooth manifolds, and these can have important physical consequences for both classical and quantum physics in systems having fractal properties.
The theory of 'zeta functions of fractal strings' has been initiated by the first author in the early 1990s, and developed jointly with his collaborators during almost two decades of intensive research in numerous articles and several monographs. In 2009, the same author introduced a new class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions', which since then, has enabled us to extend the existing theory of zeta functions of fractal strings and sprays to arbitrary bounded (fractal) sets in Euclidean spaces of any dimension. A natural and closely related tool for the study of distance zeta f…
We obtain formulas for the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on symmetric finitely ramified fractals, such as the Sierpinski gasket, and a fractal Laplacian on the interval. These formulas contain a new type of zeta function associated with a polynomial (rational functions also can appear in this context). It is proved that this zeta function has a meromorphic continuation to a half plain with poles contained in an arithmetic progression. It is shown as an example that the Riemann zeta function is the zeta functions of a quadratic polynomial, which is associated with the Laplacian on an …
In 2009, the first author introduced a new class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions', associated with arbitrary compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. It represents a natural, but nontrivial extension of the theory of `geometric zeta functions' of bounded fractal strings. In this memoir, we introduce the class of `relative fractal drums' (or RFDs), which contains the classes of bounded fractal strings and of compact fractal subsets of Euclidean spaces as special cases. Furthermore, the associated (relative) distance zeta functions of RFDs, extend (i…
We discuss a number of techniques for determining the Minkowski dimension of bounded subsets of some Euclidean space of any dimension, including: the box-counting dimension and equivalent definitions based on various box-counting functions; the similarity dimension via the Moran equation (at least in the case of self-similar sets); the order of the (box-)counting function; the classic result on compact subsets of the real line due to Besicovitch and Taylor, as adapted to the theory of fractal strings; and the abscissae of convergence of new classes of zeta functions. Specifically, we define bo…
We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that have been analyzed in the existing literature.
Recently, the first author has extended the definition of the zeta function associated with fractal strings to arbitrary bounded subsets $A$ of the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^N$, for any integer $N\ge1$. It is defined by $ζ_A(s)=\int_{A_δ}d(x,A)^{s-N}\,\mathrm{d} x$ for all $s\in\mathbb{C}$ with $\operatorname{Re}\,s$ sufficiently large, and we call it the distance zeta function of $A$. Here, $d(x,A)$ denotes the Euclidean distance from $x$ to $A$ and $A_δ$ is the $δ$-neighborhood of $A$, where $δ$ is a fixed positive real number. We prove that the abscissa of absolute conver…
We give an overview of the intimate connections between natural direct and inverse spectral problems for fractal strings, on the one hand, and the Riemann zeta function and the Riemann hypothesis, on the other hand (in joint works of the author with Carl Pomerance and Helmut Maier, respectively). We also briefly discuss closely related developments, including the theory of (fractal) complex dimensions (by the author and many of his collaborators, including especially Machiel van Frankenhuijsen), quantized number theory and the spectral operator (jointly with Hafedh Herichi), and some other wor…
Our main goal in this long survey article is to provide an overview of the theory of complex fractal dimensions and of the associated geometric or fractal zeta functions, first in the case of fractal strings (one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary), in \S2, and then in the higher-dimensional case of relative fractal drums and, in particular, of arbitrary bounded subsets of Euclidean space of $\mbr^N$, for any integer $N \geq 1$, in \S3. Special attention is paid to discussing a variety of examples illustrating the general theory rather than to providing complete statements of the results …
Multifractals are inhomogeneous measures (or functions) which are typically described by a full spectrum of real dimensions, as opposed to a single real dimension. Results from the study of fractal strings in the analysis of their geometry, spectra and dynamics via certain zeta functions and their poles (the complex dimensions) are used in this text as a springboard to define similar tools fit for the study of multifractals such as the binomial measure. The goal of this work is to shine light on new ideas and perspectives rather than to summarize a coherent theory. Progress has been made which…
The spectral operator was introduced by M. L. Lapidus and M. van Frankenhuijsen [La-vF3] in their reinterpretation of the earlier work of M. L. Lapidus and H. Maier [LaMa2] on inverse spectral problems and the Riemann hypothesis. In essence, it is a map that sends the geometry of a fractal string onto its spectrum. In this survey paper, we present the rigorous functional analytic framework given by the authors in [HerLa1] and within which to study the spectral operator. Furthermore, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the invertibility of the spectral operator (in the critica…
The local theory of complex dimensions describes the oscillations in the geometry (spectra and dynamics) of fractal strings. Such geometric oscillations can be seen most clearly in the explicit volume formula for the tubular neighborhoods of a $p$-adic fractal string $\mathcal{L}_p$, expressed in terms of the underlying complex dimensions. The general fractal tube formula obtained in this paper is illustrated by several examples, including the nonarchimedean Cantor and Euler strings. Moreover, we show that the Minkowski dimension of a $p$-adic fractal string coincides with the abscissa of conv…
We establish pointwise and distributional fractal tube formulas for a large class of compact subsets of Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimensions. These formulas are expressed as sums of residues of suitable meromorphic functions over the complex dimensions of the compact set under consideration (i.e., over the poles of its fractal zeta function). Our results generalize to higher dimensions (and in a significant way) the corresponding ones previously obtained for fractal strings by the first author and van Frankenhuijsen. They are illustrated by several examples and applied to yield a new Minko…
We present, using spectral analysis, a possible way to prove the Riemann's hypothesis (RH) that the only zeroes of the Riemann zeta-function are of the form s=1/2+iλ_n. A supersymmetric quantum mechanical model is proposed as an alternative way to prove the Riemann's conjecture, inspired in the Hilbert-Polya proposal; it uses an inverse eigenvalue approach associated with a system of p-adic harmonic oscillators. An interpretation of the Riemann's fundamental relation Z(s) = Z(1-s) as a duality relation, from one fractal string L to another dual fractal string L' is proposed.
We use the self-similar tilings constructed by the second author in "Canonical self-affine tilings by iterated function systems" to define a generating function for the geometry of a self-similar set in Euclidean space. This tubular zeta function encodes scaling and curvature properties related to the complement of the fractal set, and the associated system of mappings. This allows one to obtain the complex dimensions of the self-similar tiling as the poles of the tubular zeta function and hence develop a tube formula for self-similar tilings in \$\mathbb{R}^d$. The resulting power series in $…
To motivate our discussion, we consider a 1+1 dimensional scalar field interacting with a static Coulomb-type background, so that the spectrum of quantum fluctuations is given by a second-order differential operator on a single coordinate r with a singular coefficient proportional to 1/r. We find that the spectral functions of this operator present an interesting behavior: the zeta function has multiple poles in the complex plane; accordingly, logarithms of the proper time appear in the heat-trace expansion. As a consequence, the zeta function does not provide a finite regularization of the ef…
We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.
We study the distribution of resonances for geometrically finite hyperbolic surfaces of infinite area by countting resonances numerically. The resonances are computed as zeros of the Selberg zeta function, using an algorithm for computation of the zeta function for Schottky groups. Our particular focus is on three aspects of the resonance distribution that have attracted attention recently: the fractal Weyl law, the spectral gap, and the concentration of decay rates.
The multifractal structure underlying a self-similar measure stems directly from the weighted self-similar system (or weighted iterated function system) which is used to construct the measure. This follows much in the way that the dimension of a self-similar set, be it the Hausdorff, Minkowski, or similarity dimension, is determined by the scaling ratios of the corresponding self-similar system via Moran's theorem. The multifractal structure allows for our definition of scaling regularity and scaling zeta functions motivated by geometric zeta functions and, in particular, partition zeta functi…
Typically, in the dynamical theory of extremal events, the function that gauges the intensity of a phenomenon is assumed to be convex and maximal, or singular, at a single, or at most a finite collection of points in phase--space. In this paper we generalize this situation to fractal landscapes, i.e. intensity functions characterized by an uncountable set of singularities, located on a Cantor set. This reveals the dynamical rôle of classical quantities like the Minkowski dimension and content, whose definition we extend to account for singular continuous invariant measures. We also introduce t…
