We consider a class of singular Riemannian manifolds, the deformed spheres $S^N_k$, defined as the classical spheres with a one parameter family $g[k]$ of singular Riemannian structures, that reduces for $k=1$ to the classical metric. After giving explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the metric Laplacian $Δ_{S^N_k}$, we study the associated zeta functions $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. We introduce a general method to deal with some classes of simple and double abstract zeta functions, generalizing the ones appearing in $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. An application of this method allows to obtain the main zeta invariants for these zeta functions in all dimensions, and in particular $ζ(0,Δ_{S^N_k})$ and $ζ'(0,Δ_{S^N_k})$. We give explicit formulas for the zeta regularized determinant in the low dimensional cases, $N=2,3$, thus generalizing a result of Dowker \cite{Dow1}, and we compute the first coefficients in the expansion of these determinants in powers of the deformation parameter $k$.
For a general Fuchsian group of the first kind with an arbitrary unitary representation we define zeta functions related to the contributions of the identity, hyperbolic, elliptic and parabolic conjugacy classes in Selberg's trace formula. We present Selberg's zeta function in terms of a regularized determinant of the automorphic Laplacian. We also present the zeta function for the identity contribution in terms of a regularized determinant of the Laplacian on the two dimensional sphere. We express the zeta functions for the elliptic and parabolic contributions in terms of certain regularized …
In this work, we use semigroup integral to evaluate zeta-function regularized determinants. This is especially powerful for non--positive operators such as the Dirac operator. In order to understand fully the quantum effective action one should know not only the potential term but also the leading kinetic term. In this purpose we use the Weyl type of symbol calculus to evaluate the determinant as a derivative expansion. The technique is applied both to a spin--0 bosonic operator and to the Dirac operator coupled to a scalar field.
We review the work of the authors and their collaborators on the decomposition of the zeta-determinant of the Dirac operator into the contribution coming from different parts of a manifold.
A derivation of the spectral determinant of the Schrödinger operator on a metric graph is presented where the local matching conditions at the vertices are of the general form classified according to the scheme of Kostrykin and Schrader. To formulate the spectral determinant we first derive the spectral zeta function of the Schrödinger operator using an appropriate secular equation. The result obtained for the spectral determinant is along the lines of the recent conjecture.
The interplay of unitarity and analyticity has long been known to impose strong constraints on scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory. This has been highlighted in recent times in a number of papers and lecture notes. Here we examine such conditions in the context of superstring tree-level scattering amplitudes, leading to positivity constraints on determinants of Hankel matrices involving polynomials of multiple zeta values. These generalise certain constraints on polynomials of single zeta values in the mathematics literature.
Summations and relations involving the Hurwitz and Riemann zeta-functions are extended first to Barnes zeta-functions and then to zeta-functions of general type. The analysis is motivated by the evaluation of determinants on spheres which are treated both by a direct expansion method and by regularised sums. Comments on existing calculations are made. A Kaluza--Klein technique is introduced providing a determinant interpretation of the Glaisher-Kinkelin-Bendersky constants which are then generalised to arbitrary zeta-functions. This technique allows an improved treatment of sphere determinants…
The principal aim in this paper is to employ a recently developed unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents and $ζ$-functions to efficiently compute values of spectral $ζ$-functions at positive integers associated to regular (three-coefficient) self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville differential expressions $τ$. Depending on the underlying boundary conditions, we express the $ζ$-function values in terms of a fundamental system of solutions of $τy = z y$ and their expansions about the spectral point $z=0$. Furthermore, we give the full analytic continuation of the $ζ$-function through …
The goal of this paper is to compute the zeta function determinant for the massive Laplacian on Riemann caps (or spherical suspensions). These manifolds are defined as compact and boundaryless $D-$dimensional manifolds deformed by a singular Riemannian structure. The deformed spheres, considered previously in the literature, belong to this class. After presenting the geometry and discussing the spectrum of the Laplacian, we illustrate a method to compute its zeta regularized determinant. The special case of the deformed sphere is recovered as a limit of our general formulas.
We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.
Let $M$ be a finite volume, non-compact hyperbolic Riemann surface, possibly with elliptic fixed points, and let $χ$ denote a finite dimensional unitary representation of the fundamental group of $M$. Let $Δ$ denote the hyperbolic Laplacian which acts on smooth sections of the flat bundle over $M$ associated to $χ$. From the spectral theory of $Δ$, there are three distinct sequences of numbers: The first coming from the eigenvalues of $L^{2}$ eigenfunctions, the second coming from resonances associated to the continuous spectrum, and the third being the set of negative integers. Using these se…
In this paper, we consider the deformed Fredholm determinant of the confluent hypergeometric kernel. This determinant represents the gap probability of the corresponding determinantal point process where each particle is removed independently with probability $1- γ$, $0 \leq γ<1$. We derive asymptotics of the deformed Fredholm determinant when the gap interval tends to infinity, up to and including the constant term. As an application of our results, we establish a central limit theorem for the eigenvalue counting function and a global rigidity upper bound for its maximum deviation.
We consider in detail the quantum-mechanical problem associated with the motion of a one-dimensional particle under the action of the double-well potential. Our main tool will be the euclidean (imaginary time) version of the path-integral method. Once we perform the Wick rotation, the euclidean equation of motion is the same as the usual one for the point particle in real time, except that the potential at issue is turned upside down. In doing so, our double-well potential becomes a two-humped potential. As required by the semiclassical approximation we may study the quadratic fluctuations ove…
Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson introduced a generalized version of the determinant formula for the Ihara zeta function associated to finite or infinite regular graphs. On the other hand, Konno and Sato obtained a formula of the characteristic polynomial of the Grover matrix by using the determinant expression for the second weighted zeta function of a finite graph. In this paper, we focus on a relationship between the Grover walk and the generalized Ihara zeta function. That is to say, we treat the generalized Ihara zeta function of the one-dimensional integer lattice as a limit of the Ihara z…
The Riemann-zeta function regularization procedure has been studied intensively as a good method in the computation of the determinant for pseudo-diferential operator. In this paper we propose a different approach for the computation of the determinant base on the Wheeler-De Witt equation.
In this paper we analyze the spectral zeta function associated with a Laplace operator acting on scalar functions on an N-dimensional Euclidean space in the presence of a spherically symmetric background potential. The obtained analytic continuation of the spectral zeta function is then used to derive very simple results for the functional determinant of the operator and the Casimir energy of the scalar field.
In this paper, we are concerned with the deformed Pearcey determinant $\det\left(I-γK^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}\right)$, where $0 \leq γ<1$ and $K^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}$ stands for the trace class operator acting on $L^2\left(-s, s\right)$ with the classical Pearcey kernel arising from random matrix theory. This determinant corresponds to the gap probability for the Pearcey process after thinning, which means each particle in the Pearcey process is removed independently with probability $1-γ$. We establish an integral representation of the deformed Pearcey determinant involving the Hamiltonian associa…
We present a calculation of the zeta function and of the functional determinant for a Laplace-type differential operator, corresponding to a scalar field in a higher dimensional de Sitter brane background, which consists of a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime bounded by a de Sitter section, representing a brane. Contrary to the existing examples, which all make use of conformal transformations, we evaluate the zeta function working directly with the higher dimensional wave operator. We also consider a generic mass term and coupling to curvature, generalizing previous results. Th…
In this paper we explore the Zeta function arising from a small perturbation on a surface of revolution and the effect of this on the functional determinant and in the change of the Casimir energy associated with this configuration.
We introduce a Selberg type zeta function of two variables which interpolates several higher Selberg zeta functions. The analytic continuation, the functional equation and the determinant expression of this function via the Laplacian on a Riemann surface are obtained.
We study the spectral properties of the Laplace type operator on the circle. We discuss various approximations for the heat trace, the zeta function and the zeta-regularized determinant. We obtain a differential equation for the heat kernel diagonal and a recursive system for the diagonal heat kernel coefficients, which enables us to find closed approximate formulas for the heat trace and the functional determinant which become exact in the limit of infinite radius. The relation to the generalized KdV hierarchy is discussed as well.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the determinant of the bundle Laplacian on discrete $d$-dimensional tori as the number of vertices tends to infinity. This determinant has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of cycle-rooted spanning forests. We also establish a relation (in the limit) between the spectral zeta function of a line bundle over a discrete torus, the spectral zeta function of the infinite graph $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and the Epstein-Hurwitz zeta function. The latter can be viewed as the spectral zeta function of the twisted continuous torus which is the limit of the sequence of discr…
We discuss a specific class of regular-singular Laplace-type operators with matrix coefficients. Their zeta determinants were studied by K. Kirsten, P. Loya and J. Park on the basis of the Contour integral method, with general boundary conditions at the singularity and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the regular boundary. We complete the arguments of Kirsten, Loya and Park by explicitly verifying that the Contour integral method indeed applies in the regular-singular setup. Further we extend the zeta determinant computations to generalized Neumann boundary conditions at the regular boundary a…
A new, seemingly useful presentation of zeta functions on complex tori is derived by using contour integration. It is shown to agree with the one obtained by using the Chowla-Selberg series formula, for which an alternative proof is thereby given. In addition, a new proof of the functional determinant on the torus results, which does not use the Kronecker first limit formula nor the functional equation of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. As a bonus, several identities involving the Dedekind eta function are obtained as well.
We study a class of bivariate deformed Hermite polynomials and some of their properties using classical analytic techniques and the Wigner map. We also prove the positivity of certain determinants formed by the deformed polynomials. Along the way we also work out some additional properties of the (undeformed) complex Hermite polynomials and their relationships to the standard Hermite polynomials (of a single real variable).
We study the Hankel determinant generated by a deformed Hermite weight with one jump $w(z,t,γ)=e^{-z^2+tz}|z-t|^γ(A+Bθ(z-t))$, where $A\geq 0$, $A+B\geq 0$, $t\in\textbf{R}$, $γ>-1$ and $z\in\textbf{R}$. By using the ladder operators for the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials, and their relative compatibility conditions, we obtain a series of difference and differential equations to describe the relations among $α_n$, $β_n$, $R_n(t)$ and $r_n(t)$. Especially, we find that the auxiliary quantities $R_n(t)$ and $r_n(t)$ satisfy the coupled Riccati equations, and $R_n(t)$ satisfies a part…
Let $M$ denote a finite volume, non-compact Riemann surface without elliptic points, and let $B$ denote the Lax-Phillips scattering operator. Using the superzeta function approach due to Voros, we define a Hurwitz-type zeta function $ζ^{\pm}_{B}(s,z)$ constructed from the resonances associated to $zI -[ (1/2)I \pm B]$. We prove the meromorphic continuation in $s$ of $ζ^{\pm}_{B}(s,z)$ and, using the special value at $s=0$, define a determinant of the operators $zI -[ (1/2)I \pm B]$. We obtain expressions for Selberg's zeta function and the determinant of the scattering matrix in terms of the o…
In this paper, we study the relation between the partition function of the free scalar field theory on hypercubes with boundary conditions and asymptotics of discrete partition functions on a sequence of "lattices" which approximate the hypercube as the mesh approaches to zero. More precisely, we show that the logarithm of the zeta regularized determinant of Laplacian on the hypercube with Dirichlet boundary condition appears as the constant term in the asymptotic expansion of the log-determinant of the discrete Laplacian up to an explicitly computable constant. We also investigate similar pro…
We introduce a polynomial zeta function $ζ^{(p)}_{P_n}$, related to certain problems of mathematical physics, and compute its value and the value of its first derivative at the origin $s=0$, by means of a very simple technique. As an application, we compute the determinant of the Dirac operator on quaternionic vector spaces.
In this paper we applied the contour integral method for the zeta function associated with a differential operator to the Laplacian on a surface of revolution. Using the WKB expansion, we calculated the residues and values of the zeta function at several important points. The results agree with those obtained from the heat kernel expansion. We also obtained a closed form formula for the determinant of the Laplacian on such a surface.
We have proposed a regularization technique and apply it to the Euler product of zeta functions in the part one. In this paper that is the second part of the trilogy, we give another evidence to demonstrate the Riemann hypotheses by using the approximate functional equation. Some other results on the critical line are also presented using the relations between the Euler product and the deformed summation representions in the critical strip. In part three, we will focus on physical applications using these outcomes.
The zeta functions for the Schrödinger equation with a triangular potential are investigated. Values of the zeta functions are computed using both the Weierstrass factorization theorem and analytic continuation via contour integration. The results were found to be consistent where the domains of the two methods overlap. Analytic continuation is used to compute values of the zeta functions at zero and the negative integers, explore the pole structure (and residue values), as well as the value of the slopes at the origin. Those results are used for the computation of the trace and determinant of…
We construct spectral zeta functions for the Dirac operator on metric graphs. We start with the case of a rose graph, a graph with a single vertex where every edge is a loop. The technique is then developed to cover any finite graph with general energy independent matching conditions at the vertices. The regularized spectral determinant of the Dirac operator is also obtained as the derivative of the zeta function at a special value. In each case the zeta function is formulated using a contour integral method, which extends results obtained for Laplace and Schrodinger operators on graphs.
From the viewpoint of quantum walks, the Ihara zeta function of a finite graph can be said to be closely related to its evolution matrix. In this note we introduce another kind of zeta function of a graph, which is closely related to, as to say, the square of the evolution matrix of a quantum walk. Then we give to such a function two types of determinant expressions and derive from it some geometric properties of a finite graph. As an application, we illustrate the distribution of poles of this function comparing with those of the usual Ihara zeta function.
Using the determinant representation of gauge transformation operator, we have shown that the general form of $τ$ function of the $q$-KP hierarchy is a q-deformed generalized Wronskian, which includes the q-deformed Wronskian as a special case. On the basis of these, we study the q-deformed constrained KP ($q$-cKP) hierarchy, i.e. $l$-constraints of $q$-KP hierarchy. Similar to the ordinary constrained KP (cKP) hierarchy, a large class of solutions of $q$-cKP hierarchy can be represented by q-deformed Wronskian determinant of functions satisfying a set of linear $q$-partial differential equati…
The zeta and eta-functions associated with massless and massive Dirac operators, in a D-dimensional (D odd or even) manifold without boundary, are rigorously constructed. Several mathematical subtleties involved in this process are stressed, as the intrisic ambiguity present in the definition of the associated fermion functional determinant in the massless case and, also, the unavoidable presence (in some situations) of a multiplicative anomaly, that can be conveniently expressed in terms of the noncommutative residue. The ambiguity is here seen to disappear in the massive case, giving rise to…
We investigate the moments of the derivative, on the unit circle, of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and use this to formulate a conjecture for the moments of the derivative of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line. We do the same for the analogue of Hardy's Z-function, the characteristic polynomial multiplied by a suitable factor to make it real on the unit circle. Our formulae are expressed in terms of a determinant of a matrix whose entries involve the I-Bessel function and, alternately, by a combinatorial sum.
We provide an explicit construction of a cross section for the geodesic flow on infinite-area Hecke triangle surfaces which allows us to conduct a transfer operator approach to the Selberg zeta function. Further we construct closely related cross sections for the billiard flow on the associated triangle surfaces and endow the arising discrete dynamical systems and transfer operator families with two weight functions which presumably encode Dirichlet respectively Neumann boundary conditions. The Fredholm determinants of these transfer operator families constitute dynamical zeta functions, which…
We give a new upper bound on the Selberg zeta function for a convex co-compact Schottky group acting on $ {\mathbb H}^{n+1}$: in strips parallel to the imaginary axis the zeta function is bounded by $ \exp (C |s|^δ) $ where $ δ$ is the dimension of the limit set of the group. This bound is more precise than the optimal global bound $ \exp (C |s|^{n+1}) $, and it gives new bounds on the number of resonances (scattering poles) of $ Γ\backslash {\mathbb H}^{n+1} $. The proof of this result is based on the application of holomorphic $ L^2$-techniques to the study of the determinants of the Ruelle …
