Resolution Of Multiplicative Anomaly Of Zeta Regularization For Polynomials

We investigate the moments of the derivative, on the unit circle, of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and use this to formulate a conjecture for the moments of the derivative of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line. We do the same for the analogue of Hardy's Z-function, the characteristic polynomial multiplied by a suitable factor to make it real on the unit circle. Our formulae are expressed in terms of a determinant of a matrix whose entries involve the I-Bessel function and, alternately, by a combinatorial sum.
We investigate the horizontal distribution of zeros of the derivative of the Riemann zeta function and compare this to the radial distribution of zeros of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix. Both cases show a surprising bimodal distribution which has yet to be explained. We show by example that the bimodality is a general phenomenon. For the unitary matrix case we prove a conjecture of Mezzadri concerning the leading order behavior, and we show that the same follows from the random matrix conjectures for the zeros of the zeta function.
We obtain formulas for the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on symmetric finitely ramified fractals, such as the Sierpinski gasket, and a fractal Laplacian on the interval. The interplay of unitarity and analyticity has long been known to impose strong constraints on scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory. This has been highlighted in recent times in a number of papers and lecture notes. Here we examine such conditions in the context of superstring tree-level scattering amplitudes, leading to positivity constraints on determinants of Hankel matrices involving polynomials of multiple zeta values. These generalise certain constraints on polynomials of single zeta values in the mathematics literature.
