Let $M$ be a finite volume, non-compact hyperbolic Riemann surface, possibly with elliptic fixed points, and let $χ$ denote a finite dimensional unitary representation of the fundamental group of $M$. Let $Δ$ denote the hyperbolic Laplacian which acts on smooth sections of the flat bundle over $M$ associated to $χ$. From the spectral theory of $Δ$, there are three distinct sequences of numbers: The first coming from the eigenvalues of $L^{2}$ eigenfunctions, the second coming from resonances associated to the continuous spectrum, and the third being the set of negative integers. Using these sequences of spectral data, we employ the super-zeta approach to regularization and introduce two super-zeta functions, $\Z_-(s,z)$ and $\Z_+(s,z)$ that encode the spectrum of $Δ$ in such a way that they can be used to define the regularized determinant of $Δ-z(1-z)I$. The resulting formula for the regularized determinant of $Δ-z(1-z)I$ in terms of the Selberg zeta function, see Theorem 5.3, encodes the symmetry $z\leftrightarrow 1-z$, which could not be seen in previous works, due to a different definition of the regularized determinant.
Let $\G\subset \mathrm{SL}_{2}(\R)$ be a cofinite Fuchsian subgroup, and let $i\infty$ be a cusp of $\G$. For $k\in\Z_{\geq 0}$, let $\Sk$ denote the complex vector space of cusp forms of weight-$k$, with respect to the Fuchsian subgroup $\G$. Let $f\in\Sk$ be a cusp form of weight-$k$, which is normalized, with respect to the Petersson inner-product on $\Sk$. For any $n\in\Z_{\geq 1}$, let $a_{n}$ denote the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $f$ at $i\infty$. Then, for any $k\in\Z_{\geq 5}$, we show that \begin{align*} \big|a_{n}\big|=O_{f,\G}\big(n^{\frac{k-1}{2}+\frac{2}{k}}\big), \end{align*} …
Let $Γ$ be a cofinite Fuchsian group acting on hyperbolic two-space $\HH.$ Let $M=Γ\setminus \HH $ be the corresponding quotient space. For $γ,$ a closed geodesic of $M$, let $l(γ)$ denote its length. The prime geodesic counting function $π_{M}(u)$ is defined as the number of $Γ$-inconjugate, primitive, closed geodesics $γ$ such that $e^{l(γ)} \leq u.$ The \emph{prime geodesic theorem} implies: $$π_{M}(u)=\sum_{0 \leq λ_{M,j} \leq 1/4} \text{li}(u^{s_{M,j}}) + O_{M}(\frac{u^{3/4}}{\log{u}}), $$ where $0=λ_{M,0} < λ_{M,1} <...$ are the eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian acting on the space…
We exhibit an algorithm to compute a Dirichlet domain for a cofinite Fuchsian group Gamma. As a consequence, we compute the invariants of Gamma, including an explicit finite presentation for Gamma.
For cofinite Kleinian groups, with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we derive the Selberg trace formula. As an application we define the corresponding Selberg zeta-function and compute its divisor, thus generalizing results of Elstrodt, Grunewald and Mennicke to non-trivial unitary representations. We show that the presence of cuspidal elliptic elements sometimes adds ramification point to the zeta function. In fact, if D is the ring of Eisenstein integers, then the Selberg zeta-function of PSL(2,D) contains ramification points.

We consider the Ruelle zeta function $R(s)$ of a genus $g$ hyperbolic Riemann surface with $n$ punctures and $v$ ramification points. $R(s)$ is equal to $Z(s)/Z(s+1)$, where $Z(s)$ is the Selberg zeta function. The main result of this work is the leading behavior of $R(s)$ at $s=0$. If $n_0$ is the order of the determinant of the scattering matrix $φ(s)$ at $s=0$, we find that \begin{align*} \lim_{s\rightarrow 0}\frac{R(s)}{s^{2g-2+n-n_0}}=(-1)^{\frac{A}{2}+1}(2π)^{2g-2+n }\tildeφ(0)^{-1} \prod_{j=1}^v m_j, \end{align*}which says that $R(s)$ has order $2g-2+n-n_0$ at $s=0$, and its leading coe…
For cofinite Kleinian groups (or equivalently, finite-volume three-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds) with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we evaluate the regularized determinant of the Laplacian using W. Muller's regularization. We give an explicit formula relating the determinant to the Selberg zeta-function.
For nonuniform cofinite Fuchsian groups $Γ$ which satisfy a certain additional geometric condition, we show that the Maass cusp forms for $Γ$ are isomorphic to 1-eigenfunctions of a finite-term transfer operator. The isomorphism is constructive.
We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.
For Kleinian groups acting on hyperbolic three-space, we prove factorization formulas for both the Selberg zeta-function and the automorphic scattering matrix. We extend results of Venkov and Zograf from Fuchsian groups, to Kleinian groups, and we give a proof that is simple and extendable to more general groups.
We initiate the study of Selberg zeta functions $Z_{Γ,χ}$ for geometrically finite Fuchsian groups $Γ$ and finite-dimensional representations $χ$ with non-expanding cusp monodromy. We show that for all choices of $(Γ,χ)$, the Selberg zeta function $Z_{Γ,χ}$ converges on some half-plane in $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, under the assumption that $Γ$ admits a strict transfer operator approach, we show that $Z_{Γ,χ}$ extends meromorphically to all of $\mathbb{C}$.
For $Γ$ a cocompact or cofinite Fuchsian group, we study the hyperbolic lattice point problem in conjugacy classes, which is a modification of the classical hyperbolic lattice point problem. We use large sieve inequalities for the Riemann surfaces $Γ\backslash \mathbb H$ to obtain average results for the error term, which are conjecturally optimal. We give a new proof of the error bound $O(X^{2/3})$, due to A. Good. For $\hbox{SL}(2,{\mathbb Z})$ we interpret our results in terms of indefinite quadratic forms.
For $Γ$ a cocompact or cofinite Fuchsian group, we study the lattice point problem on the Riemann surface $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. The main asymptotic for the counting of the orbit $Γz$ inside a circle of radius $r$ centered at $z$ grows like $c e^r$. Phillips and Rudnick studied $Ω$-results for the error term and mean results in $r$ for the normalized error term. We investigate the normalized error term in the natural parameter $X=2 \cosh r$ and prove $Ω_{\pm}$-results for the orbit $Γw$ and circle centered at $z$, even for $z \neq w$.
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
In this paper we extend the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for cofinite Fuchsian groups to the Hecke triangle groups G_q, q=3,4,..., which are non-arithmetic for q \not= 3,4,6. For this we make use of a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the corresponding Hecke surfaces which has been constructed in arXiv:0801.3951 and which is closely related to the natural extension of the generating map for the so called Hurwitz-Nakada continued fractions. We derive simple functional equations for the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator which for eigenvalues rho =1 are expected…
This paper studies algebraic and analytic structures associated with the Lerch zeta function, extending the complex variables viewpoint taken in part II. The Lerch transcendent $Φ(s, z, c)$ is obtained from the Lerch zeta function $ζ(s, a, c)$ by the change of variable $z=e^{2 πi a}$. We show that it analytically continues to a maximal domain of holomorphy in three complex variables $(s, z, c)$ as a multivalued function defined over the base manifold ${\bf C} \times P^1({\bf C} \smallsetminus \{0, 1, \infty\}) \times ({\bf C}\smallsetminus {\bf Z})$. and compute the monodromy functions definin…
For $Γ$ a Fuchsian group of finite covolume, we study the lattice point problem in conjugacy classes on the Riemann surface $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$. Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hyperbolic conjugacy class in $Γ$ and $\ell$ the $\mathcal{H}$-invariant closed geodesic on the surface. The main asymptotic for the counting function of the orbit $\mathcal{H} \cdot z$ inside a circle of radius $t$ centered at $z$ grows like $c_{\mathcal{H}} \cdot e^{t/2}$. This problem is also related with counting distances of the orbit of $z$ from the geodesic $\ell$. For $X \sim e^{t/2}$ we study mean value and $Ω$-res…
In this paper we study congruence properties of the representations $U_α:=U^{PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})}_{χ_α}$ of the projective modular group ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ induced from a family $χ_α$ of characters for the Hecke congruence subgroup $Γ_0(4)$ basically introduced by A. Selberg. Interest in the representations $U_α$ stems from their appearance in the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for this Fuchsian group and character $χ_α$. Hence the location of the nontrivial zeros of this function and therefore also the spectral properties of the corresponding automorphic Laplace-Be…
