For $Π\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ a connected, open, bounded set whose boundary is a finite union of disjoint polygons whose vertices have integer coordinates, the logarithm of the discrete Laplacian on $LΠ\cap \mathbb{Z}^2$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions has an asymptotic expansion for large $L$ involving the zeta-regularized determinant of the associated continuum Laplacian.
When $Π$ is not simply connected, this result extends to Laplacians acting on two-valued functions with a specified monodromy class.
For a general Fuchsian group of the first kind with an arbitrary unitary representation we define zeta functions related to the contributions of the identity, hyperbolic, elliptic and parabolic conjugacy classes in Selberg's trace formula. We present Selberg's zeta function in terms of a regularized determinant of the automorphic Laplacian. We also present the zeta function for the identity contribution in terms of a regularized determinant of the Laplacian on the two dimensional sphere. We express the zeta functions for the elliptic and parabolic contributions in terms of certain regularized …
We discuss modifications in the integral representation of the Riemann zeta-function that lead to generalizations of the Riemann functional equation that preserves the symmetry $s\to (1-s)$ in the critical strip. By modifying one integral representation of the zeta-function with a cut-off that does exhibit the symmetry $x\mapsto 1/x$, we obtain a generalized functional equation involving Bessel functions of second kind. Next, with another cut-off that does exhibit the same symmetry, we obtain a generalization for the functional equation involving only one Bessel function of second kind. Some c…
In this work, we use semigroup integral to evaluate zeta-function regularized determinants. This is especially powerful for non--positive operators such as the Dirac operator. In order to understand fully the quantum effective action one should know not only the potential term but also the leading kinetic term. In this purpose we use the Weyl type of symbol calculus to evaluate the determinant as a derivative expansion. The technique is applied both to a spin--0 bosonic operator and to the Dirac operator coupled to a scalar field.
The zeta-regularization allows to establish a connection between Feynman's path integral and Fourier integral operator zeta-functions. This fact can be utilized to perform the regularization of the vacuum expectation values in quantum field theories. In this proceeding, we will describe the concept of the zeta-regularization, give a simple example and demonstrate that quantum computing can be employed to numerically evaluate zeta-regulated vacuum expectation values on a quantum computer.
The principal aim in this paper is to employ a recently developed unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents and $ζ$-functions to efficiently compute values of spectral $ζ$-functions at positive integers associated to regular (three-coefficient) self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville differential expressions $τ$. Depending on the underlying boundary conditions, we express the $ζ$-function values in terms of a fundamental system of solutions of $τy = z y$ and their expansions about the spectral point $z=0$. Furthermore, we give the full analytic continuation of the $ζ$-function through …
It has recently been shown that vacuum expectation values and Feynman path integrals can be regularized using Fourier integral operator $ζ$-function, yet the physical meaning of these $ζ$-regularized objects was unknown. Here we show that $ζ$-regularized vacuum expectations appear as continuum limits using a certain discretization scheme. Furthermore, we study the rate of convergence for the discretization scheme using the example of a one-dimensional hydrogen atom in $(-π,π)$ which we evaluate classically, using the Rigetti Quantum Virtual Machine, and on the Rigetti 8Q quantum chip "Agave" d…
Let $M$ be a finite volume, non-compact hyperbolic Riemann surface, possibly with elliptic fixed points, and let $χ$ denote a finite dimensional unitary representation of the fundamental group of $M$. Let $Δ$ denote the hyperbolic Laplacian which acts on smooth sections of the flat bundle over $M$ associated to $χ$. From the spectral theory of $Δ$, there are three distinct sequences of numbers: The first coming from the eigenvalues of $L^{2}$ eigenfunctions, the second coming from resonances associated to the continuous spectrum, and the third being the set of negative integers. Using these se…
We present another expression to regularize the Euler product representation of the Riemann zeta function. % in this paper. The expression itself is essentially same as the usual Euler product that is the infinite product, but we define a new one as the limit of the product of some terms derived from the usual Euler product. We also refer to the relation between the Bernoulli number and $P(z)$, which is an infinite summation of a $z$ power of the inverse primes. When we apply the same technique to the $L$-function associated to an elliptic curve, we can evaluate the power of the Taylor expansi…
Lattice field theory is a very powerful tool to study Feynman's path integral non-perturbatively. However, it usually requires Euclidean background metrics to be well-defined. On the other hand, a recently developed regularization scheme based on Fourier integral operator $ζ$-functions can treat Feynman's path integral non-pertubatively in Lorentzian background metrics. In this article, we formally $ζ$-regularize lattice theories with Lorentzian backgrounds and identify conditions for the Fourier integral operator $ζ$-function regularization to be applicable. Furthermore, we show that the clas…
We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.
The goal of this paper is to compute the zeta function determinant for the massive Laplacian on Riemann caps (or spherical suspensions). These manifolds are defined as compact and boundaryless $D-$dimensional manifolds deformed by a singular Riemannian structure. The deformed spheres, considered previously in the literature, belong to this class. After presenting the geometry and discussing the spectrum of the Laplacian, we illustrate a method to compute its zeta regularized determinant. The special case of the deformed sphere is recovered as a limit of our general formulas.
We consider a class of singular Riemannian manifolds, the deformed spheres $S^N_k$, defined as the classical spheres with a one parameter family $g[k]$ of singular Riemannian structures, that reduces for $k=1$ to the classical metric. After giving explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the metric Laplacian $Δ_{S^N_k}$, we study the associated zeta functions $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. We introduce a general method to deal with some classes of simple and double abstract zeta functions, generalizing the ones appearing in $ζ(s,Δ_{S^N_k})$. An application of this method allows to obtain…
We use relative zeta functions technique of W. Muller \cite{Mul} to extend the classical decomposition of the zeta regularized partition function of a finite temperature quantum field theory on a ultrastatic space-time with compact spatial section to the case of non compact spatial section. As an application, we study the case of Schrödinger operators with delta like potential, as described by Albeverio & alt. in \cite{AGHH}.
We consider finite area convex Euclidean circular sectors. We prove a variational Polyakov formula which shows how the zeta-regularized determinant of the Laplacian varies with respect to the opening angle. Varying the angle corresponds to a conformal deformation in the direction of a conformal factor with a logarithmic singularity at the origin. We compute explicitly all the contributions to this formula coming from the different parts of the sector. In the process, we obtain an explicit expression for the heat kernel on an infinite area sector using Carslaw-Sommerfeld's heat kernel. We also …
We study the spectral properties of the Laplace type operator on the circle. We discuss various approximations for the heat trace, the zeta function and the zeta-regularized determinant. We obtain a differential equation for the heat kernel diagonal and a recursive system for the diagonal heat kernel coefficients, which enables us to find closed approximate formulas for the heat trace and the functional determinant which become exact in the limit of infinite radius. The relation to the generalized KdV hierarchy is discussed as well.
In this paper, we study the relation between the partition function of the free scalar field theory on hypercubes with boundary conditions and asymptotics of discrete partition functions on a sequence of "lattices" which approximate the hypercube as the mesh approaches to zero. More precisely, we show that the logarithm of the zeta regularized determinant of Laplacian on the hypercube with Dirichlet boundary condition appears as the constant term in the asymptotic expansion of the log-determinant of the discrete Laplacian up to an explicitly computable constant. We also investigate similar pro…
We study the finite temperature free energy and fermion number for Dirac fields in a one-dimensional spatial segment, under two different members of the family of local boundary conditions defining a self-adjoint Euclidean Dirac operator in two dimensions. For one of such boundary conditions, compatible with the presence of a spectral asymmetry, we discuss in detail the contribution of this part of the spectrum to the zeta-regularized determinant of the Dirac operator and, thus, to the finite temperature properties of the theory.
For $n$ a nonnegative integer, we consider the $n$-Laplacian $Δ_n$ acting on the space of $n$-differentials on a confinite Riemann surface $X$ which has ramification points. The trace formula for the resolvent kernel is developed along the line à la Selberg. Using the trace formula, we compute the regularized determinant of $Δ_n+s(s+2n-1)$, from which we deduce the regularized determinant of $Δ_n$, denoted by $\det\!'Δ_n$. Taking into account the contribution from the absolutely continuous spectrum, $\det\!'Δ_n$ is equal to a constant $\mathcal{C}_n$ times $Z(n)$ when $n\geq 2$. Here $Z(s)$ is…
We explore the geometric meaning of the so-called zeta-regularized determinant of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact surface, with or without boundary. We relate the $(-c/2)$-th power of the determinant of the Laplacian to the appropriately regularized partition function of a Brownian loop soup of intensity $c$ on the surface. This means that, in a certain sense, decorating a random surface by a Brownian loop soup of intensity $c$ corresponds to weighting the law of the surface by the $(-c/2)$-th power of the determinant of the Laplacian. Next, we introduce a method of regularizing a L…
We study the zeta-regularized determinant of a non self-adjoint elliptic operator on a closed odd-dimensional manifold. We show that, if the spectrum of the operator is symmetric with respect to the imaginary axis, then the determinant is real and its sign is determined by the parity of the number of the eigenvalues of the operator, which lie on the positive part of the imaginary axis. It follows that, for many geometrically defined operators, the phase of the determinant is a topological invariant. In numerous examples, coming from geometry and physics, we calculate the phase of the determina…
