In the beginning of the 1950's, Wigner introduced a fundamental deformation from the canonical quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator, which is nowadays sometimes called a Wigner quantum oscillator or a parabose oscillator. Also, in quantum mechanics the so-called Wigner distribution is considered to be the closest quantum analogue of the classical probability distribution over the phase space. In this article, we consider which definition for such distribution function could be used in the case of non-canonical quantum mechanics. We then explicitly compute two different expressions for this distribution function for the case of the parabose oscillator. Both expressions turn out to be multiple sums involving (generalized) Laguerre polynomials. Plots then show that the Wigner distribution function for the ground state of the parabose oscillator is similar in behaviour to the Wigner distribution function of the first excited state of the canonical quantum oscillator.
A new model for the finite one-dimensional harmonic oscillator is proposed based upon the algebra u(2)_α. This algebra is a deformation of the Lie algebra u(2) extended by a parity operator, with deformation parameter α. A class of irreducible unitary representations of u(2)_α is constructed. In the finite oscillator model, the (discrete) spectrum of the position operator is determined, and the position wave functions are shown to be dual Hahn polynomials. Plots of these discrete wave functions display interesting properties, similar to those of the parabose oscillator. We show indeed that in …
The phase-space representation for a relativistic linear oscillator in a homogeneous external field expressed through the finite-difference equation is constructed. Explicit expressions of the relativistic oscillator Wigner quasi-distribution function for the stationary states as well as of states of thermodynamical equilibrium are obtained and their correct limits are shown.
In this paper we review the basic results concerning the Wigner transform and then we completely solve the quantum forced harmonic/inverted oscillator in such a framework; eventually, the tunnel effect for the forced inverted oscillator is discussed.
Deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra and the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}\left( {1|2} \right)$: exact solution for the quantum harmonic oscillator with a position-dependent mass
We define a Wigner distribution function for a one-dimensional finite quantum system, in which the position and momentum operators have a finite (multiplicity-free) spectrum. The distribution function is thus defined on discrete phase-space, i.e. on a finite discrete square grid. These discrete Wigner functions possess a number of properties similar to the Wigner function for a continuous quantum system such as the quantum harmonic oscillator. As an example, we consider the so-called su(2) oscillator model in dimension 2j+1, which is known to tend to the canonical oscillator when j tends to in…
For a quantum harmonic oscillator an explicit expression that describes the energy distribution as a coordinate function is obtained. The presence of the energy function poles is shown for the quantum system in domains where the Wigner function has negative values.
We consider the long time, large scale behavior of the Wigner transform $W_\eps(t,x,k)$ of the wave function corresponding to a discrete wave equation on a 1-d integer lattice, with a weak multiplicative noise. This model has been introduced in Basile, Bernardin, and Olla to describe a system of interacting linear oscillators with a weak noise that conserves locally the kinetic energy and the momentum. The kinetic limit for the Wigner transform has been shown in Basile, Olla, and Spohn. In the present paper we prove that in the unpinned case there exists $γ_0>0$ such that for any $γ\in(0,γ_0]$…
Recently, a new definition for a Wigner distribution function for a one-dimensional finite quantum system, in which the position and momentum operators have a finite (multiplicity-free) spectrum, was developed. This distribution function is defined on discrete phase-space (a finite square grid), and can thus be referred to as the Wigner matrix. In the current paper, we compute this Wigner matrix (or rather, the pre-Wigner matrix, which is related to the Wigner matrix by a simple matrix multiplication) for the case of the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ finite oscillator. The first expression for the matrix…
In the Wigner framework, one abandons the assumption that the usual canonical commutation relations are necessarily valid. Instead, the compatibility of Hamilton's equations and the Heisenberg equations are the starting point, and no further assumptions are made about how the position and momentum operators commute. Wigner quantization leads to new classes of solutions, and representations of Lie superalgebras are needed to describe them. For the n-dimensional Wigner harmonic oscillator, solutions are known in terms of the Lie superalgebras osp(1|2n) and gl(1|n). For n=3N, the question arises …
In a system of coupled harmonic oscillators, the interaction can be represented by a real, symmetric and positive definite interaction matrix. The quantization of a Hamiltonian describing such a system has been done in the canonical case. In this paper, we take a more general approach and look at the system as a Wigner quantum system. Hereby, one does not assume the canonical commutation relations, but instead one just requires the compatibility between the Hamilton and Heisenberg equations. Solutions of this problem are related to the Lie superalgebras gl(1|n) and osp(1|2n). We determine the …
In this work we study symplectic unitary representations for the Galilei group. As a consequence the Schrödinger equation is derived in phase space. The formalism is based on the non-commutative structure of the star-product, and using the group theory approach as a guide a physical consistent theory in phase space is constructed. The state is described by a quasi-probability amplitude that is in association with the Wigner function. The 3D harmonic oscillator and the noncommutative oscillator are studied in phase space as an application, and the Wigner function associated to both cases are de…
We present a perturbation analysis of the semiclassical Wigner equation which is based on the interplay between configuration and phase spaces via Wigner transform. We employ the so-called harmonic approximation of the Schrodinger eigenfunctions for single-well potentials in configuration space, to construct an asymptotic expansion of the solution of the Wigner equation. This expansion is a perturbation of the Wigner function of a harmonic oscillator but it is not a genuine semiclassical expansion because the correctors depend on the semiclassical parameter. However, it suggests the selection…
We prove several types of scaling results for Wigner distributions of spectral projections of the isotropic Harmonic oscillator on $\mathbb R^d$. In prior work, we studied Wigner distributions $W_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)}(x, ξ)$ of individual eigenspace projections. In this continuation, we study Weyl sums of such Wigner distributions as the eigenvalue $E_N(\hbar)$ ranges over spectral intervals $[E - δ(\hbar), E + δ(\hbar)]$ of various widths $δ(\hbar)$ and as $(x, ξ) \in T^*\mathbb R^d$ ranges over tubes of various widths around the classical energy surface $Σ_E \subset T^*\mathbb R^d$. The main r…
Eigenspaces of the quantum isotropic Harmonic Oscillator $\hat{H}_{\hbar} : = - \frac{\hbar^2}{2} Δ+ \frac{||x||^2}{2}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ have extremally high multiplicites and the eigenspace projections $Π_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)} $ have special asymptotic properties. This article gives a detailed study of their Wigner distributions $W_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)}(x, ξ)$. Heuristically, if $E_N(\hbar) = E$, $W_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)}(x, ξ)$ is the `quantization' of the energy surface $Σ_E$, and should be like the delta-function $δ_{Σ_E}$ on $Σ_E$; rigorously, $W_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)}(x, ξ)$ tends in a weak* sens…
The classical boundaries of the quantum singular oscillator (SO) is addressed under Weyl-Wigner phase-space and Bohmian mechanics frameworks as to comparatively evaluate phase-space and configuration space quantum trajectories as well as to compute distorting quantum fluctuations. For an engendered pure state \textit{quasi}-gaussian Wigner function that recovers the classical time evolution (at phase and configuration spaces), Bohmian trajectories are analytically obtained as to show how the SO energy and anharmonicity parameters drive the quantum regime through the so-called quantum force, wh…
In this thesis, we construct an approximate series solution of the Wigner equation in terms of Airy functions, which are semiclassically concentrated on certain Lagrangian curves in two-dimensional phase space. These curves are defined by the eigenvalues and the Hamiltonian function of the associated one-dimensional Schrödinger operator, and they play a crucial role in the quantum interference mechanism in phase space. We assume that the potential of the Schrödinger operator is a single potential well, such that the spectrum is discrete. The construction starts from an eigenfunction series exp…
The Schrödinger equation in phase space is used to calculate the Wigner function for the Helium atom in the approximation of a system of two oscillators. Dissipation effect is analysed and the non-classicality of the state is studied by the non-classicality indicator of the Wigner function, which is calculated as a function of the dissipation parameter.
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group $Sp(2)$. It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for mas…
We have calculated the joint probability distribution function for random reverse-cyclic matrices and shown that it is related to an N-body exactly solvable model. We refer to this well-known model potential as a screened harmonic oscillator. The connection enables us to obtain all the correlations among the particle positions moving in a screened harmonic potential. The density of nontrivial eigenvalues of this ensemble is found to be of the Wigner form and admits a hole at the origin, in contrast to the semicircle law of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The spacing distri…
The mathematical description of the quantum harmonic oscillator is essentially based on the Gaussian function. In the case of a quantum oscillator with finite-dimensional Hilbert space, the position space consists in a finite number of points, and the ground state can be regarded as a finite version of the Gaussian function. Conversely, each finite Gaussian can be used in order to define some finite oscillators. We investigate certain finite Gaussians as concern their Fourier transform, Wigner function and associated oscillators.
We prove that smooth Wigner-Weyl spectral sums at an energy level $E$ exhibit Airy scaling asymptotics across the classical energy surface $Σ_E$. This was proved earlier by the authors for the isotropic harmonic oscillator and the proof is extended in this article to all quantum Hamiltonians $-\hbar^2 Δ+ V$ where $V$ is a confining potential with at most quadratic growth at infinity. The main tools are the Herman-Kluk initial value parametrix for the propagator and the Chester-Friedman-Ursell normal form for complex phases with a one-dimensional cubic degeneracy. This gives a rigorous account …
When dealing with the classical limit of two quantum mechanical oscillators on a noncommutative configuration space, the limits corresponding to the removal of configuration-space noncommutativity and position-momentum noncommutativity do not commute. We address this behaviour from the point of view of the phase-space localisation properties of the Wigner functions of coherent states under the two limits.
We study the high-temperature behavior of quantum-mechanical path integrals. Starting from the Feynman-Kac formula, we derive a new functional representation of the Wigner-Kirkwood perturbation expansion for quantum Boltzmann densities. As shown by its applications to different potentials, the presented expansion turns out to be quite efficient in generating analytic form of the higher-order expansion coefficients. To put some flesh on the bare bones we apply the expansion to obtain basic thermodynamic functions of the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator. Further salient issues, such as gene…
In this work, we generate a family of quantum potentials that are non-rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator. Such a family can be obtained via two different but equivalent supersymmetric transformations. We construct ladder operators for these extensions as the product of the intertwining operators of both transformations. Then, we generate families of Barut-Girardello coherent states and analyze some of their properties as temporal stability, continuity on the label, and completeness relation. Moreover, we calculate mean-energy values, time-dependent probability densities, Wigner fun…
In this paper we generalize the concept of Wigner function in the case of quantum mechanics with a minimum length scale arising due to the application of a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). We present the phase space formulation of such theories following GUP and show that the Weyl transform and the Wigner function does satisfy some of their known properties in standard quantum mechanics. We utilise the generalized Wigner function to calculate the phase space average of the Hamiltonian of a quantum harmonic oscillator satisfying deformed Heisenberg algebra. It is also shown that average…
