Wigner phase space quasi-probability distribution function is a Fourier transform related to a given quantum mechanical wave function. It is shown that for the wave functions of type $ψ(q)=e^{-aq^2}ϕ(q)$, the Wigner function can be defined in terms of differential operators acting on a given function, independently from the integral formula which appears in the standard definition. Gaussian wave packet, harmonic and singular oscillators are given as the examples.
Coherent-state path integral calculation of the Wigner function
We consider a set of operators hat{x}=(hat{x}_1,..., hat{x}_N) with diagonal representatives P(n) in the space of generalized coherent states |n>; hat{x}=int dn P(n) |n><n|. We regularize the coherent-state path integral as a limit of a sequence of averages <.>_L over polygonal paths with L vertices {n_1...L}. The distribution of the path centroid bar{P}=(1/L) sum_{i=1} ^{L}P(n_i) tends to the Wigner function W(x), the joint distribution for the operators: W(x)= lim_{L->infinity} <delta(x-bar{P})>_{L}. This result is proved in the case where the Hamiltonian commutes with hat{x}. The Wigner fun…
The cross-Wigner distribution $W(f,g)$ of two functions or temperate distributions $f,g$ is a fundamental tool in quantum mechanics and in signal analysis. Usually, in applications in time-frequency analysis $f$ and $g$ belong to some modulation space and it is important to know which modulation spaces $W(f,g)$ belongs to. Although several particular sufficient conditions have been appeared in this connection, the general problem remains open. In the present paper we solve completely this issue by providing the full range of modulation spaces in which the continuity of the cross-Wigner distrib…
A non-local abstract Cauchy problem with a singular integral is studied, which is a closed system of two evolution equations for a real-valued function and a function-valued function. By proposing an appropriate Banach space, the well-posedness of the evolution system is proved under some boundedness and smoothness conditions on the coefficient functions. Furthermore, an isomorphism is established to extend the result to a partial integro-differential equation with singular convolution kernel, which is a generalized form of the stationary Wigner equation. Our investigation considerably improve…
A gauge-invariant Wigner quantum mechanical theory is obtained by applying the Weyl-Stratonovich transform to the von Neumann equation for the density matrix. The transform reduces to the Weyl transform in the electrostatic limit, when the vector potential and thus the magnetic field are zero. Both cases involve a center-of-mass transform followed by a Fourier integral on the relative coordinate introducing the momentum variable. The latter is continuous if the limits of the integral are infinite or, equivalently, the coherence length is infinite. However, the quantum theory involves Fourier t…
We show that in a four dimensional conformal Haag-Kastler net, its massless particle spectrum is generated by a free field subnet. If the massless particle spectrum is scalar, then the free field subnet decouples as a tensor product component.
