It is shown that any closed three-manifold M obtained by integral surgery on a knot in the three-sphere can always be constructed from integral surgeries on a 3-component link L with each component being an unknot in the three-sphere. It is also interesting to notice that infinitely many different integral surgeries on the same link L could give the same three-manifold M.
We construct links of arbitrarily many components each component of which is slice and yet are not concordant to any link with even one unknotted component. The only tool we use comes from the Alexander modules.
When can surgery on a null-homologous knot K in a rational homology sphere produce a non-separating sphere? We use Heegaard Floer homology to give sufficient conditions for K to be unknotted. We also discuss some applications to homology cobordism, concordance, and Mazur manifolds.
In this paper, we analyze L-space surgeries on two component L-space links. We show that if one surgery coefficient is negative for the L-space surgery, then the corresponding link component is an unknot. If the link admits very negative (i.e. $d_{1}, d_{2}\ll0$) L-space surgeries, it is the Hopf link. We also give a way to characterize the torus link $T(2, 2l)$ by observing an L-space surgery $S^{3}_{d_{1}, d_{2}}(\mathcal{L})$ with $d_{1}d_{2}<0$ on a 2-component L-space link with unknotted components. For some 2-component L-space links, we give explicit descriptions of the L-space surgery s…
Noting that cycle diagrams of permutations visually resemble grid diagrams used to depict knots and links in topology, we consider the knot (or link) obtained from the cycle diagram of a permutation. We show that the permutations which correspond in this way to an unknot are enumerated by the Schröder numbers, and also enumerate the permutations corresponding to an unlink. The proof uses Bennequin's inequality.
We study Heegaard Floer homology and various related invariants (such as the $h$-function) for two-component L-space links with linking number zero. For such links, we explicitly describe the relationship between the $h$-function, the Sato-Levine invariant and the Casson invariant. We give a formula for the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants of integral surgeries on two-component L-space links of linking number zero in terms of the $h$-function, generalizing a formula of Ni and Wu. As a consequence, for such links with unknotted components, we characterize L-space surgery slopes in terms of the $ν^…
We give infinitely many $2$-component links with unknotted components which are topologically concordant to the Hopf link, but not smoothly concordant to any $2$-component link with trivial Alexander polynomial. Our examples are pairwise non-concordant.
We study the effect of Nielsen moves and their geometric counterparts, handle slides, on good boundary links. A collection of links, universal for 4-dimensional surgery, is shown to admit Seifert surfaces with trivial Lagrangian. They are good boundary links, with Seifert matrices of a more general form than in known constructions of slice links. We show that a certain more restrictive condition on Seifert matrices is sufficient for proving the links are slice. We also give a correction of a Kirby calculus identity in \cite{FK2}, useful for constructing surgery kernels associated to link-slice…
Let $H\subseteq S^3$ be the two-component Hopf link. After choosing a Legendrian representative of $H$ with respect to the standard tight contact structure on $S^3$ we perform contact $(-1)$-surgery on the link itself. The manifold we get is a lens space together with a tight contact strucure on it, which depends on the chosen Legendrian representative. We classify its minimal symplectic fillings up to homeomorphism (and often up to diffeomoprhism), extending the results of Lisca which covers the case of universally tight structures and the article of Plamenevskaya - Van Horn Morris which desc…
In links with two components there are three different types of crossings: self-crossings in the first component, self crossings in the second component, and crossings between components. In this paper we examine the minimum number of crossing changes needed to unlink without changing the crossings between components. We restrict our attention to unlinking two component links with linking number zero and both components unknotted. We provide data for links with no more than ten crossings and general results about asymmetry of unlinking between components.
Let $L$ be an $n$-component link ($n>1$) with pairwise nonzero linking numbers in a rational homology $3$-sphere $Y$. Assume the link complement $X:=Y\setminusν(L)$ has nondegenerate Thurston norm. In this paper, we study when a Thurston norm-minimizing surface $S$ properly embedded in $X$ remains norm-minimizing after Dehn filling all boundary components of $X$ according to $\partial S$ and capping off $\partial S$ by disks. In particular, for $n=2$ the capped-off surface is norm-minimizing when $[S]$ lies outside of a finite set of rays in $H_2(X,\partial X;\mathbb{R})$. When $Y$ is an integ…
Meier and Zupan showed that every surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection and can therefore be represented by three simple tangles. This raises the possibility of applying methods from link homology to knotted surfaces. We use link homology to construct an invariant of knotted surfaces (up to isotopy) which distinguishes the unknotted sphere from certain knotted spheres. We also construct an invariant of a bridge-trisected surface in the the form of an $A_\infty$-algebra. Both invariants are defined by a novel connection between $A_\infty$-algebras and Manolescu and Ozsváth's hyp…
We give new examples of 2-component links with linking number one and unknotted components that are topologically concordant to the positive Hopf link, but not smoothly so - in fact they are not smoothly concordant to the positive Hopf link with a knot tied in the first component. Such examples were previously constructed by Cha-Kim-Ruberman-Strle; we show that our examples are distinct from theirs.
A 2-component oriented link in $S^3$ is called weakly doubly slice if it is a cross-section of an unknotted sphere in $S^4$, and strongly doubly slice if it is a cross-section of a 2-component trivial spherical link in $S^4$. We give the first example of 2-component boundary links which are weakly doubly slice but not strongly doubly slice. We also introduce a new invariant $g_{st}$ of homotopically trivial links that measures the failure of a link from being strongly doubly slice and that bounds the doubly slice genus $g_{ds}$ from below. Our examples have arbitrarily large doubly slice genus…
We prove that if the lens space $L(n, 1)$ is obtained by a surgery along a knot in the lens space $L(3,1)$ that is distance one from the meridional slope, then $n$ is in $\{-6, \pm 1, \pm 2, 3, 4, 7\}$. This result yields a classification of the coherent and non-coherent band surgeries from the trefoil to $T(2, n)$ torus knots and links. The main result is proved by studying the behavior of the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants under integral surgery along knots in $L(3,1)$. The classification of band surgeries between the trefoil and torus knots and links is motivated by local reconnection proces…
