For any knot T transverse to a given contact structure on a 3-manifold, we exhibit a Legendrian two-component link such that T equals the transverse push-off of one of the link components and contact (+1)-surgery on the link has the same effect as a Lutz twist along T.
We introduce a modification procedure for Engel structures that is reminiscent of the Lutz twist in 3-dimensional Contact Topology. This notion allows us to define what an Engel overtwisted disc is, and to prove a complete h-principle for overtwisted Engel structures with fixed overtwisted disc.
We give a possible generalization of Lutz twist to all dimensions. This reproves the fact that every contact manifold can be given a non-fillable contact structure and also shows great flexibility in the manifolds that can be realized as cores of overtwisted families. We moreover show that $R^{2n+1}$ has at least three distinct contact structures. This version of the paper contains both the texts of the published version of the paper together with an Erratum to the published version appended to the end.
In two previous papers, the two first-named authors introduced a notion of contact r-surgery along Legendrian knots in contact 3-manifolds. They also showed how (at least in principle) to convert any contact r-surgery into a sequence of contact plus or minus 1 surgeries, and used this to prove that any (closed) contact 3-manifold can be obtained from the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere by a sequence of such surgeries. In the present paper, we give a shorter proof of that result and a more explicit algorithm for turning a contact r-surgery into plus or minus 1 surgeries. We use this …
We define symplectic fractional twists, which generalize Dehn twists, and use these in open books to investigate contact structures. The resulting contact structures are invariant under a circle action, and share several similarities with the invariant contact structures that were studied by Lutz and Giroux. We show that left-handed fractional twists often give rise to non-fillable contact manifolds. These manifolds are in fact "algebraically overtwisted", yet they do not seem to contain bLobs, nor are they directly related to negative stabilizations. We also show that the Weinstein conjecture…
Using recent work on high dimensional Lutz twists and families of Weinstein structures we show that any almost contact structure on a 5-manifold is homotopic to a contact structure.
In this paper, given a knot K, for any integer m we construct a new surface Sigma_K(m) from a smoothly embedded surface Sigma in a smooth 4-manifold X by performing a surgery on Sigma. This surgery is based on a modification of the `rim surgery' which was introduced by Fintushel and Stern, by doing additional twist spinning. We investigate the diffeomorphism type and the homeomorphism type of (X,Sigma) after the surgery. One of the main results is that for certain pairs (X,Sigma), the smooth type of Sigma_K(m) can be easily distinguished by the Alexander polynomial of the knot K and the homeom…
Suppose that $X$ is a torus bundle over a closed surface with homologically essential fibers. Let $X_K$ be the manifold obtained by Fintushel--Stern knot surgery on a fiber using a knot $K\subset S^3$. We prove that $X_K$ has a symplectic structure if and only if $K$ is a fibered knot. The proof uses Seiberg--Witten theory and a result of Friedl--Vidussi on twisted Alexander polynomials.
Hofer proved the Weinstein conjecture for a closed contact 3-manifold with an overtwisted disk. In this article we extend it to the virtual contact structure and provide a new explicit example of the virtual contact structure with an overtwisted disk via a Lutz twist.
The surgery unknotting number of a Legendrian link is defined as the minimal number of particular oriented surgeries that are required to convert the link into a Legendrian unknot. Lower bounds for the surgery unknotting number are given in terms of classical invariants of the Legendrian link. The surgery unknotting number is calculated for every Legendrian link that is topologically a twist knot or a torus link and for every positive, Legendrian rational link. In addition, the surgery unknotting number is calculated for every Legendrian knot in the Legendrian knot atlas of Chongchitmate and N…
We produce the first examples of closed, tight contact 3-manifolds which become overtwisted after performing admissible transverse surgeries. Along the way, we clarify the relationship between admissible transverse surgery and Legendrian surgery. We use this clarification to study a new invariant of transverse knots - namely, the range of slopes on which admissible transverse surgery preserves tightness - and to provide some new examples of knot types which are not uniformly thick. Our examples also illuminate several interesting new phenomena, including the existence of hyperbolic, universall…
In the present paper we describe compatible open books for the fibre connected sum along binding components of open books, as well as for the fibre connected sum along multi-sections of open books. As an application the first description provides simple ways of constructing open books supporting all tight contact structures on $T^3$, recovering a result by van Horn-Morris, as well as an open book supporting the result of a Lutz twist along a binding component of an open book, recovering a result by Ozbagci--Pamuk.
We derive a new exact sequence in the hat-version of Heegaard Floer homology. As a consequence we see a functorial connection between the invariant of Legendrian knots and the contact element. As an application we derive two vanishing results of the contact element making it possible to easily read off its vanishing out of a surgery presentation in suitable situations.
We give a simple model in the complex plane of the 0-surgery along a fibered knot of a closed 3-manifold M to yield a mapping torus M'. This model allows explicit relations between pseudoholomorphic curves in the symplectizations of M and M'. As an application we use it to compute the cylindrical contact homology of open books resulting from a positive Dehn twist on a torus with boundary.
In this paper we introduce the following new ingredients: (1) rework on part of the Lagrangian surgery theory; (2) constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms on product symplectic manifolds; (3) extending Biran-Cornea Lagrangian cobordism theory to the immersed category. As a result, we manifest Seidel's exact sequences (both the Lagrangian version and the symplectomorphism version), as well as Wehrheim-Woodward's family Dehn twist sequence (including the codimension-1 case missing in the literature) as consequences of our surgery/cobordism constructions. Moreover, we obtain an expression of the a…
We study naturality properties of the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology under contact (+1)-surgery. This can be used as a calculational tool for the transverse invariant. As a consequence, we show that the Eliashberg-Chekanov twist knots E_n are not transversely simple for n odd and n>3.
Let $L \subset Y$ be a Legendrian submanifold of a contact manifold, $S\subset L$ a framed embedded sphere bounding an isotropic disc $D_S \subset Y \setminus L$, and use $L_S$ to denote the manifold obtained from $L$ by a surgery on $S$. Given some additional conditions on $D_S$ we describe how to obtain a Legendrian embedding of $L_S$ into an arbitrarily small neighbourhood of $L \cup D_S \subset Y$ by a construction that we call Legendrian ambient surgery. In the case when the disc is subcritical, we produce an isomorphism of the Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra of $L_S$ with a version of the Ch…
Using 1-twist rim surgery, we construct infinitely many smoothly embedded, orientable surfaces in the 4-ball bounding a knot in the 3-sphere that are pairwise topologically isotopic, but not ambient diffeomorphic. We distinguish the surfaces using the maps they induce on perturbed sutured Floer homology. Along the way, we show that the cobordism map induced by an ascending surface in a Weinstein cobordism preserves the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology.
We prove every oriented compact cyclic $3$-orbifold has a contact structure. There is another proof in the web by Daniel Herr in his uploaded thesis which depends on open book decompositions, ours is independent of that. We define overtwisted contact structures, tight contact structures and Lutz twist on oriented compact cyclic 3-orbifolds. We show every contact structure in an oriented compact cyclic $3$-orbifold contactified by our method is homotopic to an overtwisted structure with the overtwisted disc intersecting the singular locus of the orbifold. We pose Eliashberg's like characterizat…
The description of point defects in chiral liquid crystals via topological methods requires the introduction of singular contact structures, a generalisation of regular contact structures where the plane field may have singularities at isolated points. We characterise the class of singularities that may arise in such structures, as well as the subclass of singularities that can occur in a Beltrami field. We discuss questions of global existence, and prove that all singular contact structures with nonremovable singularities are overtwisted. To connect the theory to experiment we also discuss no…
We apply Menke's JSJ decomposition for symplectic fillings to several families of contact 3-manifolds. Among other results, we complete the classification up to orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of strong symplectic fillings of lens spaces. We show that exact symplectic fillings of contact manifolds obtained by surgery on certain Legendrian negative cables are the result of attaching a Weinstein 2-handle to an exact filling of a lens space. For large families of contact structures on Seifert fibered spaces over $S^2$, we reduce the problem of classifying exact symplectic structures to the …
