Let X and Y be two simple symmetric continuous-time random walks on the vertices of the n-dimensional hypercube. We consider the class of co-adapted couplings of these processes, and describe an intuitive coupling which is shown to be the fastest in this class.
We study a large class of long-range random walks which take values on the vertices of an N dimensional hypercube. These processes are connected with multivariate Bernoulli autoregression.
We consider the sum of the coordinates of a simple random walk on the K-dimensional hypercube, and prove a double asymptotic of this process, as both the time parameter n and the space parameter K tend to infinity. Depending on the asymptotic ratio of the two parameters, they converge towards either a Brownian motion, an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process or an i.i.d. collection of Gaussian variables.
A random walk on a $N$-dimensional hypercube is a discrete time stochastic process whose state space is the set $\{-1,+1\}^{N}$, which has uniform probability of reaching any neighbour state, and probability zero of reaching a non-neighbour state, in one step. This random walk is often studied as a process associated with the Ehrenfest Urn Model. This paper aims to present results about the time that such random walk takes to self-intersect and to return to a set of states. We also present results about the time that the random walk on a hypercube takes to visit a given set and a random set of…
We introduce a general class of random walks on the $N$-hypercube, study cut-off for the mixing time, and provide several types of representation for the transition probabilities. We observe that for a sub-class of these processes with long range (i.e. non-local) there exists a critical value of the range that allows an "almost-perfect" mixing in at most three steps. In other words, the total variation distance between the three steps transition and the stationary distribution decreases geometrically in $N$, which is the dimension of the hypercube. In some cases, the walk mixes almost-perfectl…
We consider the random walk on the hypercube which moves by picking an ordered pair $(i,j)$ of distinct coordinates uniformly at random and adding the bit at location $i$ to the bit at location $j$, modulo $2$. We show that this Markov chain has cutoff at time $\frac{3}{2}n\log n$ with window of size $n$, solving a question posed by Chung and Graham (1997).
We study a random walk in a random environment (RWRE) on $\Z^d$, $1 \leq d < +\infty$. The main assumptions are that conditionned on the environment the random walk is reversible. Moreover we construct our environment in such a way that the walk can't be trapped on a single point like in some particular RWRE but in some specific d-1 surfaces. These surfaces are basic surfaces with deterministic geometry. We prove that the local time in the neighborhood of these surfaces is driven by a function of the (random) reversible measure. As an application we get the limit law of the local time as a pro…
We study a simple random walk on an n-dimensional hypercube. For any starting position we find the probability of hitting vertex a before hitting vertex b, whenever a and b share the same edge. This generalizes the model in Doyle, P., and Snell, J., "Random Walks and Electric Networks", Mathematical Association of America, 1984 (see Exercise 1.3.7 there).
This paper studies the random walk on the hypercube $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^n$ which at each step flips $k$ randomly chosen coordinates. We prove that the mixing time for this walk is of order $\frac{n}{k} \log n$. We also prove that if $k=o(n)$, then the walk exhibits cutoff at $\frac{n}{2k} \log n$ with window $\frac{n}{2k} $.
We study nearest-neighbors branching random walks started from a point at the interior of a hypercube. We show that the probability that the process escapes the hypercube is monotonically decreasing with respect to the distance of its starting point from the boundary. We derive as a consequence that at all times the number of particles at a site is monotonically decreasing with respect to its distance from the starting point.
We study the simple random walk on the $n$-dimensional hypercube, in particular its hitting times of large (possibly random) sets. We give simple conditions on these sets ensuring that the properly-rescaled hitting time is asymptotically exponentially distributed, uniformly in the starting position of the walk. These conditions are then verified for percolation clouds with densities that are much smaller than $(n \log n)^{-1}$. A main motivation behind this paper is the study of the so-called aging phenomenon in the Random Energy Model (REM), the simplest model of a mean-field spin glass. Our …
We construct strong stationary dual chains for Ising model on a circle, non-symmetric random walk on square lattice and a random walk on hypercube. The strong stationary dual chains are all sharp and have the same state space as original chains. We use Möbius monotonicity of these chains with respect to natural orderings of the corresponding state spaces. This method provides an easy way to find eigenvalues in the Ising model and for a random walk on hypercube. Keywords: Markov chains; stochastic monotonicity; eigenvalues; Möbius monotonicity; strong stationary duality; strong stationary times…
In this paper, we present a quantum Bernoulli noises approach to quantum walks on hypercubes. We first obtain an alternative description of a general hypercube and then, based on the alternative description, we find that the operators $\partial_k^* + \partial_k$ behave actually as the shift operators, where $\partial_k$ and $\partial_k^*$ are the annihilation and creation operators acting on Bernoulli functionals, respectively. With the above operators as the shift operators on the position space, we introduce a discrete-time quantum walk model on a general hypercube and obtain an explicit for…
This work addresses potential theoretic questions for the standard nearest neighbor random walk on the hypercube $\{-1,+1\}^N$. For a large class of subsets $A\subset\{-1,+1\}^N$ we give precise estimates for the harmonic measure of $A$, the mean hitting time of $A$, and the Laplace transform of this hitting time. In particular, we give precise sufficient conditions for the harmonic measure to be asymptotically uniform, and for the hitting time to be asymptotically exponentially distributed, as $N\to\infty$. Our approach relies on a $d$-dimensional extension of the Ehrenfest urn scheme called …
We study the number $c_n^{(N)}$ of $n$-step self-avoiding walks on the $N$-dimensional hypercube, and identify an $N$-dependent \emph{connective constant} $μ_N$ and amplitude $A_N$ such that $c_n^{(N)}$ is $O(μ_N^n)$ for all $n$ and $N$, and is asymptotically $A_N μ_N^n$ as long as $n\le 2^{pN}$ for any fixed $p< \frac 12$. We refer to the regime $n \ll 2^{N/2}$ as the \emph{dilute phase}. We discuss conjectures concerning different behaviours of $c_n^{(N)}$ when $n$ reaches and exceeds $2^{N/2}$, corresponding to a critical window and a dense phase. In addition, we prove that the connective c…
The problem of constructing an optimal co-adapted coupling for a pair of symmetric random walks on $Z_2^d$ was considered by Connor and Jacka (2008), and the existence of a coupling which is stochastically fastest in the class of all such co-adapted couplings was demonstrated. In this paper we show how to generalise this construction to an optimal co-adapted coupling for the continuous-time symmetric random walk on $K_n^d$, where $K_n$ is the complete graph with $n$ vertices. Moreover, we show that although this coupling is not maximal for any $n$ (i.e. it does not achieve equality in the coup…
We consider elliptic random walks in i.i.d. random environments on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The main goal of this paper is to study under which ellipticity conditions local trapping occurs. Our main result is to exhibit an ellipticity criterion for ballistic behavior which extends previously known results. We also show that if the annealed expected exit time of a unit hypercube is infinite then the walk has zero asymptotic velocity.
We show that almost any one-dimensional projection of a suitably scaled random walk on a hypercube, inscribed in a hypersphere, converges weakly to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as the dimension of the sphere tends to infinity. We also observe that the same result holds when the random walk is replaced with spherical Brownian motion. This latter result can be viewed as a "functional" generalisation of Poincaré's observation for projections of uniform measure on high dimensional spheres; the former result is an analogous generalisation of the Bernoulli-Laplace central limit theorem. Given the r…
We consider the model of random walk on dynamical percolation introduced by Peres, Stauffer and Steif (2015). We obtain comparison results for this model for hitting and mixing times and for the spectral-gap and log-Sobolev constant with the corresponding quantities for simple random walk on the underlying graph $G$, for general graphs. When $G$ is the torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$, we recover the results of Peres et al. and we also extend them to the critical case. We also obtain bounds in the cases where $G$ is a transitive graph of moderate growth and also when it is the hypercube.
Let $X$ be a continuous time random walk on a weighted graph. Given the on-diagonal upper bounds of transition probabilities at two vertices $x_1$ and $x_2$, we use an adapted metric initiated by Davies, and obtain Gaussian upper estimates for the off-diagonal transition probability $P_{x_1}(X_t=x_2)$.
Several inequalities are proved for the mixing time of discrete-time quantum walks on finite graphs. The mixing time is defined differently than in Aharonov, Ambainis, Kempe and Vazirani (2001) and it is found that for particular examples of walks on a cycle, a hypercube and a complete graph, quantum walks provide no speed-up in mixing over the classical counterparts. In addition, non-unitary quantum walks (i.e., walks with decoherence) are considered and a criterion for their convergence to the unique stationary distribution is derived.

This investigation is motivated by a result we proved recently for the random transposition random walk: the distance from the starting point of the walk has a phase transition from a linear regime to a sublinear regime at time $n/2$. Here, we study three new examples. It is trivial that the distance for random walk on the hypercube is smooth and is given by one simple formula. In the case of random adjacent transpositions, we find that there is no phase transition even though the distance has different scalings in three different regimes. In the case of a random 3-regular graph, there is a ph…
We consider branching particle processes on discrete structures like the hypercube in a random fitness landscape (i.e., random branching/killing rates). The main question is about the location where the main part of the population sits at a late time, if the state space is large. For answering this, we take the expectation with respect to the migration (mutation) and the branching/killing (selection) mechanisms, for fixed rates. This is intimately connected with the parabolic Anderson model, the heat equation with random potential, a model that is of interest in mathematical physics because of…
Families of symmetric simple random walks on Cayley graphs of Abelian groups with a bound on the number of generators are shown to never have sharp cut off in the sense of [1], [3], or [5]. Here convergence to the stationary distribution is measured in the total variation norm. This is a situation of bounded degree and no expansion. Sharp cut off or the cut off phenomenon has been shown to occur in families such as random walks on a hypercube [1] in which the degree is unbounded as well as on a random regular graph where the degree is fixed, but there is expansion [4]. Our examples agree with …
We give conditions under which near-critical stochastic processes on the half-line have infinitely many or finitely many cutpoints, generalizing existing results on nearest-neighbour random walks to adapted processes with bounded increments satisfying appropriate conditional increment moments conditions. We apply one of these results to deduce that a class of transient zero-drift Markov chains in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, possess infinitely many separating annuli, generalizing previous results on spatially homogeneous random walks.
We show that the measure on markings of $\mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, with elements of ${0,1}$ given by i.i.d. fair coin flips on the range $\mathcal {R}$ of a random walk $X$ run until time $T$ and 0 otherwise becomes indistinguishable from the uniform measure on such markings at the threshold $T=1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that the total variation mixing time of the random walk on the lamplighter graph $\mathbf {Z}_2\wr \mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, has a cutoff with threshold $1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. We give a general criteri…
We study a discrete time self interacting random process on graphs, which we call Greedy Random Walk. The walker is located initially at some vertex. As time evolves, each vertex maintains the set of adjacent edges touching it that have not been crossed yet by the walker. At each step, the walker being at some vertex, picks an adjacent edge among the edges that have not traversed thus far according to some (deterministic or randomized) rule. If all the adjacent edges have already been traversed, then an adjacent edge is chosen uniformly at random. After picking an edge the walk jumps along it …
Given the variable-speed random walk on a weighted graph and a metric adapted to the structure of the random walk, we construct a Brownian motion on a closely related metric graph which behaves similarly to the VSRW and for which the associated intrinsic metric has certain desirable properties. Jump probabilities and moments of jump times for Brownian motion on metric graphs with varying edge lengths, jump conductances, and edge densities are computed. We use these results together with a theorem of Sturm for stochastic completeness, or non-explosiveness, on local Dirichlet spaces to prove sha…
We consider a discrete random walk (RW) in n dimensions . The RW is adapted with a geometric absorption process: at any discrete time there is a constant probability that absorption occurs in the current state. To model the RW with geometric absorption we use the concept of a multiple function barrier (MFB). In a MFB there is a modification of the original RW: each transition probability in the original RW is multiplied by β and there is an additional probability (1-β) of absorption, where 0<β<1. We study three cases: one-dimensional simple asymmetric RW, n-dimensional simple symmetric RW (n>1…
It is well-known that the behaviour of a random subgraph of a $d$-dimensional hypercube, where we include each edge independently with probability $p$, undergoes a phase transition when $p$ is around $\frac{1}{d}$. More precisely, standard arguments show that just below this value of $p$ all components of this graph have order $O(d)$ with probability tending to one as $d \to \infty$ (whp for short), whereas Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi [Largest random component of a $k$-cube, Combinatorica 2 (1982), no. 1, 1--7; MR0671140] showed that just above this value, in the supercritical regime, whp ther…
We prove a law of large numbers for a class of $\Z^d$-valued random walks in dynamic random environments, including non-elliptic examples. We assume for the random environment a mixing property called \emph{conditional cone-mixing} and that the random walk tends to stay inside wide enough space-time cones. The proof is based on a generalization of a regeneration scheme developed by Comets and Zeitouni for static random environments and adapted by Avena, den Hollander and Redig to dynamic random environments. A number of one-dimensional examples are given. In some cases, the sign of the speed c…
We consider continuous time simple random walks with arbitrary speed measure $θ$ on infinite weighted graphs. Write $p_t(x,y)$ for the heat kernel of this process. Given on-diagonal upper bounds for the heat kernel at two points $x_1,x_2$, we obtain a Gaussian upper bound for $p_t(x_1,x_2)$. The distance function which appears in this estimate is not in general the graph metric, but a new metric which is adapted to the random walk. Long-range non-Gaussian bounds in this new metric are also established. Applications to heat kernel bounds for various models of random walks in random environments…
We study a random walk in a N dimensional hypercube and exhibit results about stopping times when N diverges. The first theorem discusses the time in which two coupling processes spend to meet. A corollary provides a majorant for the velocity of convergence to equilibrium. Other three theorems treat, respectively, the time of first return to a point, the time of first return to a fixed set and the time of first arrival in a random set. We prove that these times, under a suitable rescaling, converge in law to a mean one exponential random time.
Let $X_1,X_2$ be independent random walks on $\mathbf{Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, each starting from the uniform distribution. Initially, each site of $\mathbf{Z}_n^d$ is unmarked, and, whenever $X_i$ visits such a site, it is set irreversibly to $i$. The mean of $|\mathcal{A}_i|$, the cardinality of the set $\mathcal{A}_i$ of sites painted by $i$, once all of $\mathbf{Z}_n^d$ has been visited, is $\frac{1}{2}n^d$ by symmetry. We prove the following conjecture due to Pemantle and Peres: for each $d\geq3$ there exists a constant $α_d$ such that $\lim_{n\to\infty}\operatorname{Var}(|\mathcal {A}_i|)/h_d(…
Given the increments of a simple symmetric random walk $(X_n)_{n\ge0}$, we characterize all possible ways of recycling these increments into a simple symmetric random walk $(Y_n)_{n\ge0}$ adapted to the filtration of $(X_n)_{n\ge0}$. We study the long term behavior of a suitably normalized two-dimensional process $((X_n,Y_n))_{n\ge0}$. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the process to converge to a two-dimensional Brownian motion (possibly degenerate). We also discuss cases in which the limit is not Gaussian. Finally, we provide a simple necessary and sufficient …
Suppose that $\CG$ is a finite, connected graph and $X$ is a lazy random walk on $\CG$. The lamplighter chain $X^\diamond$ associated with $X$ is the random walk on the wreath product $\CG^\diamond = \Z_2 \wr \CG$, the graph whose vertices consist of pairs $(f,x)$ where $f$ is a labeling of the vertices of $\CG$ by elements of $\Z_2$ and $x$ is a vertex in $\CG$. There is an edge between $(f,x)$ and $(g,y)$ in $\CG^\diamond$ if and only if $x$ is adjacent to $y$ in $\CG$ and $f(z) = g(z)$ for all $z \neq x,y$. In each step, $X^\diamond$ moves from a configuration $(f,x)$ by updating $x$ to $y$…
Consider a random walk whose (light-tailed) increments have positive mean. Lower and upper bounds are provided for the expected maximal value of the random walk until it experiences a given drawdown d. These bounds, related to the Calmar ratio in Finance, are of the form (exp{alpha d}-1)/alpha and (K exp{alpha d}-1)/alpha for some K>1, in terms of the adjustment coefficient alpha (E[exp{-alpha X}]=1) of the insurance risk literature. Its inverse 1/alpha has been recently derived by Aumann and Serrano as an index of riskiness of the random variable X. This article also complements the Lundberg …
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green function of the corresponding random walk. It is known from the work of W. Woess that when a finitely supported random walk on a free product of abelian groups is adapted to the free product structure, the Martin boundary coincides with the geometric boundary. The main goal of this paper is to deal with non-adapted finitely supported random walks, for which there is no explicit formula for the Green function. Nevertheless, we show that the Martin boundary still coinci…
Techniques of `dynamic renormalization', developed earlier for undirected percolation and the contact model, are adapted to the setting of directed percolation, thereby obtaining solutions of several problems for directed percolation on $Z^d$ where $d \ge 2$. The first new result is a type of uniqueness theorem: for every pair $x$ and $y$ of vertices which lie in infinite open paths, there exists almost surely a third vertex $z$ which is joined to infinity and which is attainable from $x$ and $y$ along directed open paths. Secondly, it is proved that a random walk on an infinite directed clust…
We introduce a family of stochastic processes on the integers, depending on a parameter $p \in [0,1]$ and interpolating between the deterministic rotor walk (p=0) and the simple random walk (p=1/2). This p-rotor walk is not a Markov chain but it has a local Markov property: for each $x \in \mathbb{Z}$ the sequence of successive exits from $x$ is a Markov chain. The main result of this paper identifies the scaling limit of the p-rotor walk with two-sided i.i.d. initial rotors. The limiting process takes the form $\sqrt{\frac{1-p}{p}} X(t)$, where $X$ is a doubly perturbed Brownian motion, that …
In the context of countable groups of polynomial volume growth, we consider a large class of random walks that are allowed to take long jumps along multiple subgroups according to power law distributions. For such a random walk, we study the large time behavior of its probability of return at time $n$ in terms of the key parameters describing the driving measure and the structure of the underlying group. We obtain assorted estimates including near-diagonal two-sided estimates and the Hölder continuity of the solutions of the associated discrete parabolic difference equation. In each case, thes…
We consider a natural class of long range random walks on torsion free nilpotent groups and develop limit theorems for these walks. Given the original discrete group $Γ$ and a random walk $(S_n)_ {n\ge1}$ driven by a certain type of symmetric probability measure $μ$, we construct a homogeneous nilpotent Lie group $G_\bullet(Γ,μ)$ which carries an adapted dilation structure and a stable-like process $(X_t)_{ t\ge0}$ which appears in a Donsker-type functional limit theorem as the limit of a rescaled version of the random walk. Both the limit group and the limit process on that group depend on th…
