Techniques of `dynamic renormalization', developed earlier for undirected percolation and the contact model, are adapted to the setting of directed percolation, thereby obtaining solutions of several problems for directed percolation on $Z^d$ where $d \ge 2$. The first new result is a type of uniqueness theorem: for every pair $x$ and $y$ of vertices which lie in infinite open paths, there exists almost surely a third vertex $z$ which is joined to infinity and which is attainable from $x$ and $y$ along directed open paths. Secondly, it is proved that a random walk on an infinite directed cluster is transient, almost surely, when $d \ge 3$. And finally, the block arguments of the paper may be adapted to systems with infinite range, subject to certain conditions on the edge probabilities.
We investigate extended processes given by last-passage times in directed models defined using exponential variables with decaying mean. In certain cases we find the universal Airy process, but other cases lead to non-universal and trivial extended processes.
We introduce a generalization of the extended Airy kernel with two sets of real parameters. We show that this kernel arises in the edge scaling limit of correlation kernels of determinantal processes related to a directed percolation model and to an ensemble of random matrices.
We consider biased random walk on supercritical percolation clusters in $\Z^2$. We show that the random walk is transient and that there are two speed regimes: If the bias is large enough, the random walk has speed zero, while if the bias is small enough, the speed of the random walk is positive.
We consider the simple random walk on the (unique) infinite cluster of super-critical bond percolation in $\Z^d$ with $d\ge2$. We prove that, for almost every percolation configuration, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of non-degenerate, isotropic Brownian motion. Our analysis is based on the consideration of a harmonic deformation of the infinite cluster on which the random walk becomes a square-integrable martingale. The size of the deformation, expressed by the so called corrector, is estimated by means of ergodicity arguments.
In directed last passage site percolation with i.i.d.~random weights with finite support over a $n\times\lfloor n^α\rfloor$ grid, we prove that for $n$ large enough, the order of the $r$-th central moment, $1\le r<+\infty$, of the last passage time is lower bounded by $n^{r(1-α)/2}$, $0<α<1/3$.
We consider random walk and self-avoiding walk whose 1-step distribution is given by $D$, and oriented percolation whose bond-occupation probability is proportional to $D$. Suppose that $D(x)$ decays as $|x|^{-d-α}$ with $α>0$. For random walk in any dimension $d$ and for self-avoiding walk and critical/subcritical oriented percolation above the common upper-critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{c}}\equiv2(α\wedge2)$, we prove large-$t$ asymptotics of the gyration radius, which is the average end-to-end distance of random walk/self-avoiding walk of length $t$ or the average spatial size of an oriente…
We study limit laws for simple random walks on supercritical long range percolation clusters on $\Z^d, d \geq 1$. For the long range percolation model, the probability that two vertices $x, y$ are connected behaves asymptotically as $\|x-y\|_2^{-s}$. When $s\in(d, d+1)$, we prove that the scaling limit of simple random walk on the infinite component converges to an $α$-stable Lévy process with $α= s-d$ establishing a conjecture of Berger and Biskup. The convergence holds in both the quenched and annealed senses. In the case where $d=1$ and $s>2$ we show that the simple random walk converges to…
In this paper, we obtain optimal uniform lower tail estimates for the probability distribution of the properly scaled length of the longest up/right path of the last passage site percolation model considered by Johansson in [12]. The estimates are used to prove a lower tail moderate deviation result for the model. The estimates also imply the convergence of moments, and also provide a verification of the universal scaling law relating the longitudinal and the transversal fluctuations of the model.
We study the time constant $C(ν)$ of last passage percolation on the complete directed acyclic graph on the set of non-negative integers, where edges have i.i.d. weights with distribution $ν$ with support included in $\{-\infty\}\cup\mathbb{R}$. We show that $ν\mapsto C(ν)$ is strictly increasing in $ν$. We also prove that $C(ν)$ is continuous in $ν$ for a large set of measures $ν$. Furthermore, when $ν$ is purely atomic, we show that $C(ν)$ is analytic with respect to the weights of the atoms. In the special case of two positive atoms, it is an explicit rational function of these weights.
We consider self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model with long and finite range. By means of the lace expansion we prove mean-field behavior for these models if $d>2(α\wedge2)$ for self-avoiding walk and the Ising model, and $d>3(α\wedge2)$ for percolation, where $d$ denotes the dimension and $α$ the power-law decay exponent of the coupling function. We provide a simplified analysis of the lace expansion based on the trigonometric approach in Borgs et al. (2007)
In the zero temperature Brownian semi-discrete directed polymer we study the joint distribution of two last-passage times at positions ordered in the time-like direction. This is the situation when we have the slow de-correlation phenomenon. We compute the limiting joint distribution function in a scaling limit. This limiting distribution is given by an expansion in determinants which is not a Fredholm expansion. A somewhat similar looking formula was derived non-rigorously in a related model by Dotsenko.
We consider simple random walk on the incipient infinite cluster for the spread-out model of oriented percolation on $Z^d \times Z_+$. In dimensions $d>6$, we obtain bounds on exit times, transition probabilities, and the range of the random walk, which establish that the spectral dimension of the incipient infinite cluster is 4/3, and thereby prove a version of the Alexander--Orbach conjecture in this setting. The proof divides into two parts. One part establishes general estimates for simple random walk on an arbitrary infinite random graph, given suitable bounds on volume and effective resi…
We consider a directed percolation process on an ${\cal M}$ x ${\cal N}$ rectangular lattice whose vertical edges are directed upward with an occupation probability y and horizontal edges directed toward the right with occupation probabilities x and 1 in alternate rows. We deduce a closed-form expression for the percolation probability P(x,y), the probability that one or more directed paths connect the lower-left and upper-right corner sites of the lattice. It is shown that P(x,y) is critical in the aspect ratio $a = {\cal M}/{\cal N}$ at a value $a_c =[1-y^2-x(1-y)^2]/2y^2$ where P(x,y) is di…
A range of first-passage percolation type models are believed to demonstrate the related properties of sublinear variance and superdiffusivity. We show that directed last-passage percolation with Gaussian vertex weights has a sublinear variance property. We also consider other vertex weight distributions. Corresponding results are obtained for the ground state of the `directed polymers in a random environment' model.
The fourfold research proposal regards in particular: critical oriented percolation; random walk limit laws; neural networks with long-range connections; the ant in a labyrinth.
We show that the number of maximal paths in directed last-passage percolation on the hypercubic lattice ${\mathbb Z}^d$ $(d\geq2)$ in which weights take finitely many values is typically exponentially large.
We show that fractal (or "Mandelbrot") percolation in two dimensions produces a set containing no directed paths, when the set produced has zero area. This improves a similar result by the first author in the case of constant retention probabilities to the case of retention probabilities approaching 1.
We prove a GUE central limit theorem for random variables with finite fourth moment. We apply this theorem to prove that the directed first and last passage percolation problems in thin rectangles exhibit universal fluctuations given by the Tracy-Widom law.
We study site and bond percolation on directed simple random graphs with a given degree distribution and derive the expressions for the critical value of the percolation probability above which the giant strongly connected component emerges and the fraction of vertices in this component.
This paper presents a new, short proof of the computation of the upper tail large deviation rate function for the Brownian directed percolation model. Through a distributional equivalence between the last passage time in this model and the largest eigenvalue in a random matrix drawn from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, this provides a new proof a previously known result. The method leads to associated results for the stationary Brownian directed percolation model which have not been observed before.
We show that random walks on the infinite supercritical percolation clusters in Z^d satisfy the usual Law of the Iterated Logarithm. The proof combines Barlow's Gaussian heat kernel estimates and the ergodicity of the random walk on the environment viewed from the random walker as derived by Berger and Biskup.
We consider the simple random walk on the infinite cluster of the Bernoulli bond percolation of trees, and investigate the relation between the speed of the simple random walk and the retaining probability p by studying three classes of trees. A sufficient condition is established for Galton-Watson trees.
We prove that the free energy of directed polymer in Bernoulli environment converges to the growth rate for the number of open paths in super-critical oriented percolation as the temperature tends to zero. Our proof is based on rate of convergence results which hold uniformly in the temperature. We also prove that the convergence rate is locally uniform in the percolation parameter inside the super-critical phase, which implies that the growth rate depends continuously on the percolation parameter.
We study the speed of a biased random walk on a percolation cluster on $\Z^d$ in function of the percolation parameter $p$. We obtain a first order expansion of the speed at $p=1$ which proves that percolating slows down the random walk at least in the case where the drift is along a component of the lattice.
We consider directed first passage percolation on the integer lattice, with time constant $μ$ and passage time $a_{0n}$ from the origin to $(n,0,...,0)$. It is shown that under certain conditions on the passage time distribution, $Ea_{0n} - nμ= O(n^{1/2}(\log\log n)/\log n)$.
For directed Bernoulli last passage percolation with i.i.d.~weights on vertices over a $n\times n$ grid and for $n$ large enough, the geodesics are shown to be concentrated in a cylinder, centered on the main diagonal and of width of order $n^{(2κ+2)/(2κ+3)}\sqrt{\ln n}$, where $1\leκ<\infty$ is the curvature power of the shape function at $(1,1)$. The methodology of proof is robust enough to also apply to directed Bernoulli first passage site percolation, and further to longest common subsequences in random words.
We show quenched large deviations for the simple random walk on a certain class of percolations with long-range correlations. This class contains the supercritical Bernoulli percolations, the model considered by Drewitz, R'ath and Sapozhnikov and the random-cluster model up to the slab critical point. Our result is an extension of Kubota's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations. We also state a shape theorem for the chemical distance, which is an extension of Garet and Marchand's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations.
We consider random walk on dynamical percolation on the discrete torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$. In previous work, mixing times of this process for $p<p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ were obtained in the annealed setting where one averages over the dynamical percolation environment. Here we study exit times in the quenched setting, where we condition on a typical dynamical percolation environment. We obtain an upper bound for all $p$ which for $p<p_c$ matches the known lower bound.
For biased random walk on the infinite cluster in supercritical i.i.d.\ percolation on $\Z^2$, where the bias of the walk is quantified by a parameter $β>1$, it has been conjectured (and partly proved) that there exists a critical value $β_c>1$ such that the walk has positive speed when $β<β_c$ and speed zero when $β>β_c$. In this paper, biased random walk on the infinite cluster of a certain translation invariant percolation process on $\Z^2$ is considered. The example is shown to exhibit the opposite behavior to what is expected for i.i.d.\ percolation, in the sense that it has a critical va…
We consider the simple random walk on supercritical percolation clusters in the multidimensional cubic lattice. In this model, a quenched large deviation principle holds for the position of the random walk. Its rate function depends on the law of the percolation configuration, and the aim of this paper is to study the continuity of the rate function in the law. To do this, it is useful that the rate function is expressed by the so-called Lyapunov exponent, which is the asymptotic cost paid by the random walk for traveling in a landscape of percolation configurations. In this context, we first …
We consider a weighted random walk on the backbone of an oriented percolation cluster. We determine necessary conditions on the weights for Brownian scaling limits under the annealed and the quenched law. This model is a random walk in dynamic random environment (RWDRE), where the environment is mixing, non-Markovian and not elliptic. We provide a generalization of results obtained previously by Birkner et al. (2013).
A law of the iterated logarithm is established for the last passage times of directed percolation on rectangles in the plane over exponential or geometric independent random variables, rescaled to converge to the Tracy-Widom distribution. The normalization is of loglog type, in contrast with the log normalization for the largest eigenvalue of a GUE matrix recently put forward by E. Paquette and O. Zeitouni. The proof relies on sharp tail bounds and superadditivity, close to the standard law of the iterated logarithm. A weaker result for the liminf is also discussed.
We prove the almost sure ('quenched') invariance principle for a random walker on an infinite Bernoulli percolation cluster in $\Z^d$ where $d$ is larger or equal than 2.
The sequence of random probability measures $ν_n$ that gives a path of length $n$, $\unsur{n}$ times the sum of the random weights collected along the paths, is shown to satisfy a large deviations principle with good rate function the Legendre transform of the free energy of the associated directed polymer in a random environment. Consequences on the asymptotics of the typical number of paths whose collected weight is above a fixed proportion are then drawn.
It is shown that oriented random walk on the Heisenberg group admits exponential intersection tail. As a corollary we get that on any transitive graph of polynomial volume growth, which is not a finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}, \mathbb{Z}^2$, the infinite cluster of percolation with retention parameter $p$, close enough to $1$, is transient.
We show that the Plancherel measure of the lamplighter random walk on a graph coincides with the expected spectral measure of the absorbing random walk on the Bernoulli percolation clusters. In the subcritical regime the spectrum is pure point and we construct a complete orthonormal basis of finitely supported eigenfunctions.
We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in $\Z^d$. We show that for $d \geq 2$ and $p > p_c(\Z^d)$, the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside $\{-n,...,n\}^d$ is $Θ(n^2)$ - thus the mixing time is robust up to constant factor.
In this note, we study the directed first passage percolation introduced in [F. Comets, R. Fukushima, S. Nakajima and N. Yoshida: Journal of Statistical Physics, 161-(3), 577-597 (2015)]. It is proved that the shortest path from the origin to the $n$-th hyperplane makes a jump larger than a small power of $\log n$. Some numerical results are also provided, which indicates that the maximal jump size is much larger in a certain parameter region.
Starting with a percolation model in $\Z^d$ in the subcritical regime, we consider a random walk described as follows: the probability of transition from $x$ to $y$ is proportional to some function $f$ of the size of the cluster of $y$. This function is supposed to be increasing, so that the random walk is attracted by bigger clusters. For $f(t)=e^{βt}$ we prove that there is a phase transition in $β$, i.e., the random walk is subdiffusive for large $β$ and is diffusive for small $β$.
We study a continuous time random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice, subject to a drift and an attraction to large clusters of a subcritical Bernoulli site percolation. We find two distinct regimes: a ballistic one, and a subballistic one taking place when the attraction is strong enough. We identify the speed in the former case, and the algebraic rate of escape in the latter case. Finally, we discuss the diffusive behavior in the case of zero drift and weak attraction.
For first passage percolation (FPP) on integer lattice with i.i.d. passage time distributions, in order to show existence of semi-infinite geodesics along a fixed direction, one requires unproven assumptions on the limiting shape. We consider FPP on two-dimensional integer lattice with i.i.d. passage times distributed as Durrett-Liggett class of measures. For this model, we show that along any direction in a deterministic angular sector (known as percolation cone), starting from every lattice point there exists an infinite geodesic along that direction and such directed geodesics coalesce almo…
Following the recent investigations of Baik and Suidan in \cite{baik2005gcl} and Bodineau and Martin in \cite{bodineau2005upl}, we prove large deviation properties for a last-passage percolation model in $\mathbb{Z}^{2}_{+}$ whose paths are close to the axis. The results are mainly obtained when the random weights are Gaussian or have a finite moment-generating function and rely, as in \cite{baik2005gcl} and \cite{bodineau2005upl}, on an embedding in Brownian paths and the KMT approximation. The study of the subexponential case completes the exposition.
Previous studies of connectivity in wireless networks have focused on undirected geometric graphs. More sophisticated models such as Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise-Ratio (SINR) model, however, usually leads to directed graphs. In this paper, we study percolation processes in wireless networks modelled by directed SINR graphs. We first investigate interference-free networks, where we define four types of phase transitions and show that they take place at the same time. By coupling the directed SINR graph with two other undirected SINR graphs, we further obtain analytical upper and lower bound…
We consider a directed random walk on the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented percolation, or equivalently the space-time embedding of the ``ancestral lineage'' of an individual in the stationary discrete-time contact process. We prove a law of large numbers and an annealed central limit theorem (i.e., averaged over the realisations of the cluster) using a regeneration approach. Furthermore, we obtain a quenched central limit theorem (i.e.\ for almost any realisation of the cluster) via an analysis of joint renewals of two independent walks on the same cluster.
We show that the transience or recurrence of a random walk in certain random environments on an arbitrary infinite locally finite tree is determined by the branching number of the tree, which is a measure of the average number of branches per vertex. This generalizes and unifies previous work of the authors. It also shows that the point of phase transition for edge-reinforced random walk is likewise determined by the branching number of the tree. Finally, we show that the branching number determines the rate of first-passage percolation on trees, also known as the first-birth problem. Our tech…
We consider biased random walks in a one-dimensional percolation model. This model goes back to Axelson-Fisk and Häggström and exhibits the same phase transition as biased random walk on the infinite cluster of supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, namely, for some critical value $λ_{\mathrm{c}} >0$ of the bias, it holds that the asymptotic linear speed $\overline{\mathrm{v}}$ of the walk is strictly positive if the bias $λ$ is strictly smaller than $λ_{\mathrm{c}}$, whereas $\overline{\mathrm{v}}=0$ if $λ\geq λ_{\mathrm{c}}$. We show that at the critical bias $λ= λ_{\mat…
We consider random walks on the infinite cluster of a conditional bond percolation model on the infinite ladder graph. In a companion paper, we have shown that if the random walk is pulled to the right by a positive bias $λ> 0$, then its asymptotic linear speed $\overline{\mathrm{v}}$ is continuous in the variable $λ> 0$ and differentiable for all sufficiently small $λ> 0$. In the paper at hand, we complement this result by proving that $\overline{\mathrm{v}}$ is differentiable at $λ= 0$. Further, we show the Einstein relation for the model, i.e., that the derivative of the speed at $λ= 0$ equ…
Suppose each site independently and randomly chooses some sites around it, and it is weakly (strongly) connected with them (if there choose each other). What is the probability that the weak (strong) connected cluster is infinite? We investigate a percolation model for this problem, which is a generalization of site percolation. We give a relation between the probability of the number of chosen sites around a site and the size of clusters. We also see the expected number of infinite clusters, and the exponential tail decay of the radius and the size of a cluster.
We study existence of percolation in the hierarchical group of order $N$, which is an ultrametric space, and transience and recurrence of random walks on the percolation clusters. The connection probability on the hierarchical group for two points separated by distance $k$ is of the form $c_k/N^{k(1+δ)}, δ>-1$, with $c_k=C_0+C_1\log k+C_2k^α$, non-negative constants $C_0, C_1, C_2$, and $α>0$. Percolation was proved in Dawson and Gorostiza (2013) for $δ<1$, and for the critical case, $δ=1,C_2>0$, with $α>2$. In this paper we improve the result for the critical case by showing percolation for $…
