We consider the simple random walk on the (unique) infinite cluster of super-critical bond percolation in $\Z^d$ with $d\ge2$. We prove that, for almost every percolation configuration, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of non-degenerate, isotropic Brownian motion. Our analysis is based on the consideration of a harmonic deformation of the infinite cluster on which the random walk becomes a square-integrable martingale. The size of the deformation, expressed by the so called corrector, is estimated by means of ergodicity arguments.
Ahlberg, Griffiths, Morris and Tassion have proved that, asymptotically almost surely, the quenched crossing probabilities for critical planar Voronoi percolation do not depend on the environment. We prove an analogous result for arm events. In particular, we prove that the variance of the quenched probability of an arm event is at most a constant times the square of the annealed probability. The fact that the arm events are degenerate and non-monotonic add two major difficulties. As an application, we prove that there exists $ε> 0$ such that the following holds for the annealed percolation fu…
We prove annealed scaling relations for planar Voronoi percolation. To our knowledge, this is the first result of this kind for a continuum percolation model. We are mostly inspired by the proof of scaling relations for Bernoulli percolation by Kesten [Kes87]. Along the way, we show an annealed quasi-multiplicativity property by relying on the quenched box-crossing property proved by Ahlberg, Griffiths, Morris and Tassion [AGMT16]. Intermediate results also include the study of quenched and annealed notions of pivotal events and the extension of the quenched box-crossing property of [AGMT16] t…
We consider biased random walk on supercritical percolation clusters in $\Z^2$. We show that the random walk is transient and that there are two speed regimes: If the bias is large enough, the random walk has speed zero, while if the bias is small enough, the speed of the random walk is positive.
In this paper, we study the abundance of self-avoiding paths of a given length on a supercritical percolation cluster on $\bbZ^d$. More precisely, we count $Z_N$ the number of self-avoiding paths of length $N$ on the infinite cluster, starting from the origin (that we condition to be in the cluster). We are interested in estimating the upper growth rate of $Z_N$, $\limsup_{N\to \infty} Z_N^{1/N}$, that we call the connective constant of the dilute lattice. After proving that this connective constant is a.s.\ non-random, we focus on the two-dimensional case and show that for every percolation p…
We consider random walk on dynamical percolation on the discrete torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$. In previous work, mixing times of this process for $p<p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ were obtained in the annealed setting where one averages over the dynamical percolation environment. Here we study exit times in the quenched setting, where we condition on a typical dynamical percolation environment. We obtain an upper bound for all $p$ which for $p<p_c$ matches the known lower bound.
We consider transient one-dimensional random walks in random environment with zero asymptotic speed. An aging phenomenon involving the generalized Arcsine law is proved using the localization of the walk at the foot of "valleys" of height $\log t$. In the quenched setting, we also sharply estimate the distribution of the walk at time $t$.
We consider random walk and self-avoiding walk whose 1-step distribution is given by $D$, and oriented percolation whose bond-occupation probability is proportional to $D$. Suppose that $D(x)$ decays as $|x|^{-d-α}$ with $α>0$. For random walk in any dimension $d$ and for self-avoiding walk and critical/subcritical oriented percolation above the common upper-critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{c}}\equiv2(α\wedge2)$, we prove large-$t$ asymptotics of the gyration radius, which is the average end-to-end distance of random walk/self-avoiding walk of length $t$ or the average spatial size of an oriente…
We prove the almost sure ('quenched') invariance principle for a random walker on an infinite Bernoulli percolation cluster in $\Z^d$ where $d$ is larger or equal than 2.
Following similar analysis to that in Lacoin (PTRF 159, 777-808, 2014), we can show that the quenched critical point for self-avoiding walk on random conductors on the d-dimensional integer lattice is almost surely a constant, which does not depend on the location of the reference point. We provide its upper and lower bounds that are valid for all dimensions.
We prove that the probability of crossing a large square in quenched Voronoi percolation converges to 1/2 at criticality, confirming a conjecture of Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm from 1999. The main new tools are a quenched version of the box-crossing property for Voronoi percolation at criticality, and an Efron-Stein type bound on the variance of the probability of the crossing event in terms of the sum of the squares of the influences. As a corollary of the proof, we moreover obtain that the quenched crossing event at criticality is almost surely noise sensitive.
We study limit laws for simple random walks on supercritical long range percolation clusters on $\Z^d, d \geq 1$. For the long range percolation model, the probability that two vertices $x, y$ are connected behaves asymptotically as $\|x-y\|_2^{-s}$. When $s\in(d, d+1)$, we prove that the scaling limit of simple random walk on the infinite component converges to an $α$-stable Lévy process with $α= s-d$ establishing a conjecture of Berger and Biskup. The convergence holds in both the quenched and annealed senses. In the case where $d=1$ and $s>2$ we show that the simple random walk converges to…
We consider self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model with long and finite range. By means of the lace expansion we prove mean-field behavior for these models if $d>2(α\wedge2)$ for self-avoiding walk and the Ising model, and $d>3(α\wedge2)$ for percolation, where $d$ denotes the dimension and $α$ the power-law decay exponent of the coupling function. We provide a simplified analysis of the lace expansion based on the trigonometric approach in Borgs et al. (2007)
Techniques of `dynamic renormalization', developed earlier for undirected percolation and the contact model, are adapted to the setting of directed percolation, thereby obtaining solutions of several problems for directed percolation on $Z^d$ where $d \ge 2$. The first new result is a type of uniqueness theorem: for every pair $x$ and $y$ of vertices which lie in infinite open paths, there exists almost surely a third vertex $z$ which is joined to infinity and which is attainable from $x$ and $y$ along directed open paths. Secondly, it is proved that a random walk on an infinite directed clust…
We consider simple random walk on the incipient infinite cluster for the spread-out model of oriented percolation on $Z^d \times Z_+$. In dimensions $d>6$, we obtain bounds on exit times, transition probabilities, and the range of the random walk, which establish that the spectral dimension of the incipient infinite cluster is 4/3, and thereby prove a version of the Alexander--Orbach conjecture in this setting. The proof divides into two parts. One part establishes general estimates for simple random walk on an arbitrary infinite random graph, given suitable bounds on volume and effective resi…
We show that on a Cayley graph of a nonamenable group, almost surely the infinite clusters of Bernoulli percolation are transient for simple random walk, that simple random walk on these clusters has positive speed, and that these clusters admit bounded harmonic functions. A principal new finding on which these results are based is that such clusters admit invariant random subgraphs with positive isoperimetric constant. We also show that percolation clusters in any amenable Cayley graph almost surely admit no nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions. Conversely, on a Cayley graph admitting non…
We consider self-avoiding walk and percolation in $\Zd$, oriented percolation in $\Zd\times\Zp$, and the contact process in $\Zd$, with $p D(\cdot)$ being the coupling function whose range is denoted by $L<\infty$. For percolation, for example, each bond $\{x,y\}$ is occupied with probability $p D(y-x)$. The above models are known to exhibit a phase transition when the parameter $p$ varies around a model-dependent critical point $\pc$. We investigate the value of $\pc$ when $d>6$ for percolation and $d>4$ for the other models, and $L\gg1$. We prove in a unified way that $\pc=1+C(D)+O(L^{-2d})$…
We prove quenched invariance principle for simple random walk on the unique infinite percolation cluster for a general class of percolation models on Z^d, d>=2, with long-range correlations introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, solving one of the open problems from there. This gives new results for random interlacements in dimension d>=3 at every level, as well as for the vacant set of random interlacements and the level sets of the Gaussian free field in the regime of the so-called local uniqueness (which is believed to coincide with the whole supercritical regime). An essential ingredient of our pr…
We explore the survival function for percolation on Galton-Watson trees. Letting $g(T,p)$ represent the probability a tree $T$ survives Bernoulli percolation with parameter $p$, we establish several results about the behavior of the random function $g(\mathbf{T} , \cdot)$, where $\mathbf{T}$ is drawn from the Galton-Watson distribution. These include almost sure smoothness in the supercritical region; an expression for the $k\text{th}$-order Taylor expansion of $g(\mathbf{T} , \cdot)$ at criticality in terms of limits of martingales defined from $\mathbf{T}$ (this requires a moment condition d…
The fourfold research proposal regards in particular: critical oriented percolation; random walk limit laws; neural networks with long-range connections; the ant in a labyrinth.
We prove the sharpness of the phase transition for speed in the biased random walk on the supercritical percolation cluster on Z^d. That is, for each d at least 2, and for any supercritical parameter p > p_c, we prove the existence of a critical strength for the bias, such that, below this value, the speed is positive, and, above the value, it is zero. We identify the value of the critical bias explicitly, and, in the sub-ballistic regime, we find the polynomial order of the distance moved by the particle. Each of these conclusions is obtained by investigating the geometry of the traps that ar…
We prove a {\it{quenched}} large deviation principle (LDP) for a simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster (SRWPC) on $\mathbb Z^d$ ($d\geq 2$). The models under interest include classical Bernoulli bond and site percolation as well as models that exhibit long range correlations, like the random cluster model, the random interlacement and {the vacant set of random interlacements} (for $d\geq 3$) and the level sets of the Gaussian free field ($d\geq 3$). Inspired by the methods developed by Kosygina, Rezakhanlou and Varadhan ([KRV06]) for proving quenched LDP for elliptic diffus…
In this paper, we derive upper bounds for the heat kernel of the simple random walk on the infinite cluster of a supercritical long range percolation process. For any $d \geq 1$ and for any exponent $s \in (d, (d+2) \wedge 2d)$ giving the rate of decay of the percolation process, we show that the return probability decays like $t^{-\ffrac{d}{s-d}}$ up to logarithmic corrections, where $t$ denotes the time the walk is run. Moreover, our methods also yield generalized bounds on the spectral gap of the dynamics and on the diameter of the largest component in a box. Besides its intrinsic interest,…
Spatial random graphs capture several important properties of real-world networks. We prove quenched results for the continuum space version of scale-free percolation introduced in [DW18]. This is an undirected inhomogeneous random graph whose vertices are given by a Poisson point process in $\mathbb R^d$. Each vertex is equipped with a random weight and the probability that two vertices are connected by an edge depends on their weights and on their distance. Under suitable conditions on the parameters of the model, we show that, for almost all realizations of the point process, the degree dis…
We show that random walks on the infinite supercritical percolation clusters in Z^d satisfy the usual Law of the Iterated Logarithm. The proof combines Barlow's Gaussian heat kernel estimates and the ergodicity of the random walk on the environment viewed from the random walker as derived by Berger and Biskup.
We consider the simple random walk on the infinite cluster of the Bernoulli bond percolation of trees, and investigate the relation between the speed of the simple random walk and the retaining probability p by studying three classes of trees. A sufficient condition is established for Galton-Watson trees.
We prove a {\it{quenched}} large deviation principle (LDP) for a simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster on $\Z^d$, $d\geq 2$.. We take the point of view of the moving particle and first prove a quenched LDP for the distribution of the {\it{pair empirical measures}} of the environment Markov chain. Via a contraction principle, this reduces easily to a quenched LDP for the distribution of the mean velocity of the random walk and both rate functions admit explicit (variational) formulas. Our results are based on invoking ergodicity arguments in this non-elliptic set up to contr…
We study the speed of a biased random walk on a percolation cluster on $\Z^d$ in function of the percolation parameter $p$. We obtain a first order expansion of the speed at $p=1$ which proves that percolating slows down the random walk at least in the case where the drift is along a component of the lattice.
We show quenched large deviations for the simple random walk on a certain class of percolations with long-range correlations. This class contains the supercritical Bernoulli percolations, the model considered by Drewitz, R'ath and Sapozhnikov and the random-cluster model up to the slab critical point. Our result is an extension of Kubota's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations. We also state a shape theorem for the chemical distance, which is an extension of Garet and Marchand's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations.
For biased random walk on the infinite cluster in supercritical i.i.d.\ percolation on $\Z^2$, where the bias of the walk is quantified by a parameter $β>1$, it has been conjectured (and partly proved) that there exists a critical value $β_c>1$ such that the walk has positive speed when $β<β_c$ and speed zero when $β>β_c$. In this paper, biased random walk on the infinite cluster of a certain translation invariant percolation process on $\Z^2$ is considered. The example is shown to exhibit the opposite behavior to what is expected for i.i.d.\ percolation, in the sense that it has a critical va…
We consider the simple random walk on supercritical percolation clusters in the multidimensional cubic lattice. In this model, a quenched large deviation principle holds for the position of the random walk. Its rate function depends on the law of the percolation configuration, and the aim of this paper is to study the continuity of the rate function in the law. To do this, it is useful that the rate function is expressed by the so-called Lyapunov exponent, which is the asymptotic cost paid by the random walk for traveling in a landscape of percolation configurations. In this context, we first …
We study the quenched behaviour of a perturbed version of the simple symmetric random walk on the set of integers. The random walker moves symmetrically with an exception of some randomly chosen sites where we impose a random drift. We show that if the gaps between the marked sites are i.i.d. and regularly varying with a sufficiently small index, then there is no strong quenched limit laws for the position of the random walker. As a consequence we study the quenched limit laws in the context of weak convergence of random measures.
We consider a weighted random walk on the backbone of an oriented percolation cluster. We determine necessary conditions on the weights for Brownian scaling limits under the annealed and the quenched law. This model is a random walk in dynamic random environment (RWDRE), where the environment is mixing, non-Markovian and not elliptic. We provide a generalization of results obtained previously by Birkner et al. (2013).
We consider the small deviation probability for random walk with time-inhomogeneous random environment. Compared with the result in Mogul'ski\uı (1974) for the i.i.d. random walk, the rate is smaller (due to the random environment), which is specified in terms of the quenched and annealed variance.
It is shown that oriented random walk on the Heisenberg group admits exponential intersection tail. As a corollary we get that on any transitive graph of polynomial volume growth, which is not a finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}, \mathbb{Z}^2$, the infinite cluster of percolation with retention parameter $p$, close enough to $1$, is transient.
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
For a one-dimensional random walk in random scenery (RWRS) on Z, we determine its quenched weak limits by applying Strassen's functional law of the iterated logarithm. As a consequence, conditioned on the random scenery, the one-dimensional RWRS does not converge in law, in contrast with the multi-dimensional case.
Consider a random walk among random conductances on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 2$. We study the quenched limit law under the usual diffusive scaling of the random walk conditioned to have its first coordinate positive. We show that the conditional limit law is the product of a Brownian meander and a $(d-1)$-dimensional Brownian motion.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for balanced random walks in time dependent ergodic random environments which is not necessarily nearest-neigbhor. We assume that the environment satisfies appropriate ergodicity and ellipticity conditions. The proof is based on the use of a maximum principle for parabolic difference operators.
We show that the Plancherel measure of the lamplighter random walk on a graph coincides with the expected spectral measure of the absorbing random walk on the Bernoulli percolation clusters. In the subcritical regime the spectrum is pure point and we construct a complete orthonormal basis of finitely supported eigenfunctions.
We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in $\Z^d$. We show that for $d \geq 2$ and $p > p_c(\Z^d)$, the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside $\{-n,...,n\}^d$ is $Θ(n^2)$ - thus the mixing time is robust up to constant factor.
Starting with a percolation model in $\Z^d$ in the subcritical regime, we consider a random walk described as follows: the probability of transition from $x$ to $y$ is proportional to some function $f$ of the size of the cluster of $y$. This function is supposed to be increasing, so that the random walk is attracted by bigger clusters. For $f(t)=e^{βt}$ we prove that there is a phase transition in $β$, i.e., the random walk is subdiffusive for large $β$ and is diffusive for small $β$.
We study quenched distributions on random walks in a random potential on integer lattices of arbitrary dimension and with an arbitrary finite set of admissible steps. The potential can be unbounded and can depend on a few steps of the walk. Directed, undirected and stretched polymers, as well as random walk in random environment, are covered. The restriction needed is on the moment of the potential, in relation to the degree of mixing of the ergodic environment. We derive two variational formulas for the limiting quenched free energy and prove a process-level quenched large deviation principle…
We study a continuous time random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice, subject to a drift and an attraction to large clusters of a subcritical Bernoulli site percolation. We find two distinct regimes: a ballistic one, and a subballistic one taking place when the attraction is strong enough. We identify the speed in the former case, and the algebraic rate of escape in the latter case. Finally, we discuss the diffusive behavior in the case of zero drift and weak attraction.
In this note, we prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a biased random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree with leaves. This extends a result of Peres and Zeitouni (2008) where the case without leaves is considered. A conjecture of Ben Arous and Fribergh (2016) suggests an upper bound on the bias which we observe to be sharp.
We prove an almost sure invariance principle for a random walker among i.i.d. conductances in $\Z^d$, $d\geq 2$. We assume conductances are bounded from above but we dot require they are bounded from below.
We discuss the quenched tail estimates for the random walk in random scenery. The random walk is the symmetric nearest neighbor walk and the random scenery is assumed to be independent and identically distributed, non-negative, and has a power law tail. We identify the long time aymptotics of the upper deviation probability of the random walk in quenched random scenery, depending on the tail of scenery distribution and the amount of the deviation. The result is in turn applied to the tail estimates for a random walk in random conductance which has a layered structure.
We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for continuous-time random walks in $\mathbb Z^d, d\ge 2$, in a uniformly-elliptic time-dependent balanced random environment which is ergodic under space-time shifts. We also obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds for quenched and (positive and negative) moment estimates of the transition probabilities and asymptotics of the discrete Green function.
We show that the transience or recurrence of a random walk in certain random environments on an arbitrary infinite locally finite tree is determined by the branching number of the tree, which is a measure of the average number of branches per vertex. This generalizes and unifies previous work of the authors. It also shows that the point of phase transition for edge-reinforced random walk is likewise determined by the branching number of the tree. Finally, we show that the branching number determines the rate of first-passage percolation on trees, also known as the first-birth problem. Our tech…
It is well known that random walks in one dimensional random environment can exhibit subdiffusive behavior due to presence of traps. In this paper we show that the passage times of different traps are asymptotically independent exponential random variables with parameters forming, asymptotically, a Poisson process. This allows us to prove weak quenched limit theorems in the subdiffusive regime where the contribution of traps plays the dominating role.
