We consider random walk and self-avoiding walk whose 1-step distribution is given by $D$, and oriented percolation whose bond-occupation probability is proportional to $D$. Suppose that $D(x)$ decays as $|x|^{-d-α}$ with $α>0$. For random walk in any dimension $d$ and for self-avoiding walk and critical/subcritical oriented percolation above the common upper-critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{c}}\equiv2(α\wedge2)$, we prove large-$t$ asymptotics of the gyration radius, which is the average end-to-end distance of random walk/self-avoiding walk of length $t$ or the average spatial size of an oriented percolation cluster at time $t$. This proves the conjecture for long-range self-avoiding walk in [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. (2010), to appear] and for long-range oriented percolation in [Probab. Theory Related Fields 142 (2008) 151--188] and [Probab. Theory Related Fields 145 (2009) 435--458].
The aim of this short article is to convey the basic idea of the original paper [3], without going into too much detail, about how to derive sharp asymptotics of the gyration radius for random walk, self-avoiding walk and oriented percolation above the model-dependent upper critical dimension.
We consider self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model with long and finite range. By means of the lace expansion we prove mean-field behavior for these models if $d>2(α\wedge2)$ for self-avoiding walk and the Ising model, and $d>3(α\wedge2)$ for percolation, where $d$ denotes the dimension and $α$ the power-law decay exponent of the coupling function. We provide a simplified analysis of the lace expansion based on the trigonometric approach in Borgs et al. (2007)
We consider self-avoiding walk and percolation in $\Zd$, oriented percolation in $\Zd\times\Zp$, and the contact process in $\Zd$, with $p D(\cdot)$ being the coupling function whose range is denoted by $L<\infty$. For percolation, for example, each bond $\{x,y\}$ is occupied with probability $p D(y-x)$. The above models are known to exhibit a phase transition when the parameter $p$ varies around a model-dependent critical point $\pc$. We investigate the value of $\pc$ when $d>6$ for percolation and $d>4$ for the other models, and $L\gg1$. We prove in a unified way that $\pc=1+C(D)+O(L^{-2d})$…
Consider nearest-neighbor oriented percolation in $d+1$ space-time dimensions. Let $ρ,η,ν$ be the critical exponents for the survival probability up to time $t$, the expected number of vertices at time $t$ connected from the space-time origin, and the gyration radius of those vertices, respectively. We prove that the hyperscaling inequality $dν\geη+2ρ$, which holds for all $d\ge1$ and is a strict inequality above the upper-critical dimension 4, becomes an equality for $d=1$, i.e., $ν=η+2ρ$, provided existence of at least two among $ρ,η,ν$. The key to the proof is the recent result on the criti…
Let Z_N be the number of self-avoiding paths of length N starting from the origin on the infinite cluster obtained after performing Bernoulli percolation on Z^d with parameter p>p_c(Z^d). The object of this paper is to study the connective constant of the dilute lattice \limsup_{N\to \infty} Z_N^{1/N}, which is a non-random quantity. We want to investigate if the inequality \limsup_{N\to \infty} (Z_N)^{1/N} \le \lim_{N\to \infty} E[Z_N]^{1/N} obtained with the Borel-Cantelli Lemma is strict or not. In other words, we want to know the the quenched and annealed versions of the connective constan…
In this paper, we study the abundance of self-avoiding paths of a given length on a supercritical percolation cluster on $\bbZ^d$. More precisely, we count $Z_N$ the number of self-avoiding paths of length $N$ on the infinite cluster, starting from the origin (that we condition to be in the cluster). We are interested in estimating the upper growth rate of $Z_N$, $\limsup_{N\to \infty} Z_N^{1/N}$, that we call the connective constant of the dilute lattice. After proving that this connective constant is a.s.\ non-random, we focus on the two-dimensional case and show that for every percolation p…
Fix a graph $G$ in which every edge is colored in some of $k\ge 2$ colors. Two vertices $u$ and $v$ are CA-connected if $u$ and $v$ may be connected using any subset of $k - 1$ colors. CA-connectivity is an equivalence relation dividing the vertex set into classes called CA-components. In two recent papers, Ráth, Varga, Fekete, and Molontay, and Lichev and Schapira studied the size of the largest CA-component in a randomly colored random graph. The second of these works distinguished and studied three regimes (supercritical, intermediate, and subcritical) in which the largest CA-component has …
We show that there exists a unique (up to multiplication by constants) and natural measure on simple loops in the plane and on each Riemann surface, such that the measure is conformally invariant and also invariant under restriction (i.e. the measure on a Riemann surface S' that is contained in another Riemann surface S, is just the measure on S restricted to those loops that stay in S'). We study some of its properties and consequences concerning outer boundaries of critical percolation clusters and Brownian loops.
In this note we show that percolation on non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth has a phase of non-uniqueness, i.e., p_c < p_u. Furthermore, we show that percolation and self-avoiding walk on such graphs have mean-field critical exponents. In particular, the self-avoiding walk has positive speed.
We consider long-range self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ that are defined by power-law decaying pair potentials of the form $D(x)\asymp|x|^{-d-α}$ with $α>0$. The upper-critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{c}}$ is $2(α\wedge2)$ for self-avoiding walk and the Ising model, and $3(α\wedge2)$ for percolation. Let $α\ne2$ and assume certain heat-kernel bounds on the $n$-step distribution of the underlying random walk. We prove that, for $d>d_{\mathrm{c}}$ (and the spread-out parameter sufficiently large), the critical two-point function $G_{p_{\mathrm{c}}}(x)$ for each…
The lace expansion has been a powerful tool for investigating mean-field behavior for various stochastic-geometrical models, such as self-avoiding walk and percolation, above their respective upper-critical dimension. In this paper, we prove the lace expansion for the Ising model that is valid for any spin-spin coupling. For the ferromagnetic case, we also prove that the expansion coefficients obey certain diagrammatic bounds that are similar to the diagrammatic bounds on the lace-expansion coefficients for self-avoiding walk. As a result, we obtain Gaussian asymptotics of the critical two-poi…
The smart kinetic self-avoiding walk (SKSAW) is a random walk which never intersects itself and grows forever when run in the full-plane. At each time step the walk chooses the next step uniformly from among the allowable nearest neighbors of the current endpoint of the walk. In the full-plane a nearest neighbor is allowable if it has not been visited before and there is a path from the nearest neighbor to infinity through sites that have not been visited before. It is well known that on the hexagonal lattice the SKSAW in a bounded domain between two boundary points is equivalent to an interfa…
Consider the long-range models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ of random walk, self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model, whose translation-invariant 1-step distribution/coupling coefficient decays as $|x|^{-d-α}$ for some $α>0$. In the previous work (Ann. Probab., 43, 639--681, 2015), we have shown in a unified fashion for all $α\ne2$ that, assuming a bound on the "derivative" of the $n$-step distribution (the compound-zeta distribution satisfies this assumed bound), the critical two-point function $G_{p_c}(x)$ decays as $|x|^{α\wedge2-d}$ above the upper-critical dimension $d_c\equiv(α\wedge2)m$…
The lace expansion is a powerful tool for analysing the critical behaviour of self-avoiding walks and percolation. It gives rise to a recursion relation which we abstract and study using an adaptation of the inductive method introduced by den Hollander and the authors. We give conditions under which the solution to the recursion relation behaves as a Gaussian, both in Fourier space and in terms of a local central limit theorem. These conditions are shown elsewhere to hold for sufficiently spread-out models of networks of self-avoiding walks in dimensions $d>4$, and for critical oriented percol…
We prove $\sqrt{\log n}$ lower bounds on the order of growth fluctuations in three planar growth models (first-passage percolation, last-passage percolation, and directed polymers) under no assumptions on the distribution of vertex or edge weights other than the minimum conditions required for avoiding pathologies. Such bounds were previously known only for certain restrictive classes of distributions. In addition, the first-passage shape fluctuation exponent is shown to be at least $1/8$, extending previous results to more general distributions.
The lattice Green function, i.e., the resolvent of the discrete Laplace operator, is fundamental in probability theory and mathematical physics. We derive its long-distance behaviour via a detailed analysis of an integral representation involving modified Bessel functions. Our emphasis is on the decay of the massive lattice Green function in the vicinity of the massless (critical) case, and the recovery of Euclidean isotropy in the massless limit. This provides a prototype for the expected but unproven long-distance behaviour of near-critical two-point functions in statistical mechanical model…
We review some of the results that have been derived in the last years on conformal invariance, scaling limits and properties of some two-dimensional random curves. In particular, we describe the intuitive ideas that lead to the definition of the Schramm-Loewner evolutions SLE, we define these objects, study its various properties, show how to compute (probabilities, critical exponents) using SLE, relate SLE to planar Brownian motions (i.e. the determination of the critical exponents), planar self-avoiding walks, critical percolation, loop-erased random walks and uniform spanning trees.
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of an infinite transitive graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks from a given origin. The relationship between connective constants and amenability is explored in the current work. Various properties of connective constants depend on the existence of so-called 'graph height functions', namely: (i) whether $μ(G)$ is a local function on certain graphs derived from $G$, (ii) the equality of $μ(G)$ and the asymptotic growth rate of bridges, and (iii) whether there exists a terminating algorithm for approximating $μ(G)$ to a give…
In this paper we study a two-dimensional directed self-avoiding walk model of a random copolymer in a random emulsion. The copolymer is a random concatenation of monomers of two types, $A$ and $B$, each occurring with density 1/2. The emulsion is a random mixture of liquids of two types, $A$ and $B$, organised in large square blocks occurring with density $p$ and $1-p$, respectively, where $p \in (0,1)$. The copolymer in the emulsion has an energy that is minus $α$ times the number of $AA$-matches minus $β$ times the number of $BB$-matches, where without loss of generality the interaction para…
We derive the exact value of intersection exponents between planar Brownian motions or random walks, confirming predictions from theoretical physics by Duplantier and Kwon. Let B and B' be independent Brownian motions (or simple random walks) in the plane, started from distinct points. We prove that the probability that the paths B[0,t] and B'[0,t] do not intersect decays like t^{-5/8}. More precisely, there is a constant c>0 such that if |B(0) - B'(0)| =1, for all t \ge 1, c^{-1} t^{-5/8} \le ¶[ B[0,t] \cap B'[0,t] = \emptyset ] \le c t^{-5/8}. One consequence is that the set of cut-points of…
This is a short review of the two papers on the $x$-space asymptotics of the critical two-point function $G_{p_c}(x)$ for the long-range models of self-avoiding walk, percolation and the Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, defined by the translation-invariant power-law step-distribution/coupling $D(x)\propto|x|^{-d-α}$ for some $α>0$. Let $S_1(x)$ be the random-walk Green function generated by $D$. We have shown that $\bullet~~S_1(x)$ changes its asymptotic behavior from Newton ($α>2$) to Riesz ($α<2$), with log correction at $α=2$; $\bullet~~G_{p_c}(x)\sim\frac{A}{p_c}S_1(x)$ as $|x|\to\infty$ in …
We recently introduced a robust approach to the derivation of sharp asymptotic formula for correlation functions of statistical mechanics models in the high-temperature regime. We describe its application to the nonperturbative proof of Ornstein-Zernike asymptotics of 2-point functions for self-avoiding walks, Bernoulli percolation and ferromagnetic Ising models. We then extend the proof, in the Ising case, to arbitrary odd-odd correlation functions. We discuss the fluctuations of connection paths (invariance principle), and relate the variance of the limiting process to the geometry of the eq…
The aim of this survey is to explain, in a self-contained and relatively beginner-friendly manner, the lace expansion for the nearest-neighbor models of self-avoiding walk and percolation that converges in all dimensions above 6 and 9, respectively. To achieve this, we consider a $d$-dimensional version of the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, on which it is extremely easy to enumerate various random-walk quantities. Also, we choose a particular set of bootstrapping functions, by which a notoriously complicated part of the lace-expansion analysis becomes rather transparent.
We identify the scaling limit of the backbone of the high-dimensional incipient infinite cluster (IIC), both in the long- as well as in the finite-range setting. In the finite-range setting, this scaling limit is Brownian motion, in the long-range setting, it is a stable motion. The proof relies on a novel lace expansion for percolation that resembles the original expansion for self-avoiding walks by Brydges and Spencer in 1985. This expansion is interesting in its own right.
In this paper we consider a two-dimensional model of a copolymer consisting of a random concatenation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers, immersed in a micro-emulsion of random droplets of oil and water. The copolymer interacts with the micro-emulsion through an interaction Hamiltonian that favors matches and disfavors mismatches between the monomers and the solvents, in such a way that the interaction with the oil is stronger than with the water. The configurations of the copolymers are directed self-avoiding paths in which only steps up, down and right are allowed. The configurations of…
