We study the simple random walk on the $n$-dimensional hypercube, in particular its hitting times of large (possibly random) sets. We give simple conditions on these sets ensuring that the properly-rescaled hitting time is asymptotically exponentially distributed, uniformly in the starting position of the walk. These conditions are then verified for percolation clouds with densities that are much smaller than $(n \log n)^{-1}$. A main motivation behind this paper is the study of the so-called aging phenomenon in the Random Energy Model (REM), the simplest model of a mean-field spin glass. Our results allow us to prove aging in the REM for all temperatures, thereby extending earlier results to their optimal temperature domain.
This work addresses potential theoretic questions for the standard nearest neighbor random walk on the hypercube $\{-1,+1\}^N$. For a large class of subsets $A\subset\{-1,+1\}^N$ we give precise estimates for the harmonic measure of $A$, the mean hitting time of $A$, and the Laplace transform of this hitting time. In particular, we give precise sufficient conditions for the harmonic measure to be asymptotically uniform, and for the hitting time to be asymptotically exponentially distributed, as $N\to\infty$. Our approach relies on a $d$-dimensional extension of the Ehrenfest urn scheme called …
We study a simple random walk on an n-dimensional hypercube. For any starting position we find the probability of hitting vertex a before hitting vertex b, whenever a and b share the same edge. This generalizes the model in Doyle, P., and Snell, J., "Random Walks and Electric Networks", Mathematical Association of America, 1984 (see Exercise 1.3.7 there).
Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the fractional Brownian motion $B^{H}$ with the deterministic drift $f$. It aims to highlight the role of the regularity properties of the drift $f$ as well as that of the dimension of $E$ in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$ for $F$ a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and also fo…
We consider a continuous-time Markov chain with a finite or countable state space. For a site y and subset H of the state space, the hitting time of y under taboo H is defined to be infinite if the process trajectory hits H before y, and the first hitting time of y otherwise. We investigate the probability that such times are finite. In particular, if the taboo set is finite, an efficient iterative scheme reduces the study to the known case of a singleton taboo. A similar procedure applies in the case of finite complement of the taboo set. The study is motivated by classification of branching …
Let 0<α<1/2. We show that the mixing time of a continuous-time reversible Markov chain on a finite state space is about as large as the largest expected hitting time of a subset of stationary measure at least αof the state space. Suitably modified results hold in discrete time and/or without the reversibility assumption. The key technical tool is a construction of a random set A such that the hitting time of A is both light-tailed and a stationary time for the chain. We note that essentially the same results were obtained independently by Peres and Sousi [arXiv:1108.0133].
For a finite state Markov process and a finite collection $\{ Γ_k, k \in K \}$ of subsets of its state space, let $τ_k$ be the first time the process visits the set $Γ_k$. We derive explicit/recursive formulas for the joint density and tail probabilities of the stopping times $\{ τ_k, k \in K\}$. The formulas are natural generalizations of those associated with the jump times of a simple Poisson process. We give a numerical example and indicate the relevance of our results to credit risk modeling.
We consider a $d$-dimensional random field $u=(u(x), x\in D)$ that solves a system of elliptic stochastic equations on a bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^k$, with additive white noise and spatial dimension $k=1,2,3$. Properties of $u$ and its probability law are proved. For Gaussian solutions, using results from [Dalang and Sanz-Solé, 2009], we establish upper and lower bounds on hitting probabilities in terms of the Hausdorff measure and Bessel-Riesz capacity, respectively. This relies on precise estimates on the canonical distance of the process or, equivalently, on $L^2$ estimates of inc…
Consider the random set system of {1,2,...,n}, where each subset in the power set is chosen independently with probability p. A set H is said to be a hitting set if it intersects each chosen set. The second moment method is used to exhibit the sharp concentration of the minimal size of H for a variety of values of p.
We present a framework to calculate large deviations for nonlinear functions of independent random variables supported on compact sets in Banach spaces, by extending the result in Chatterjee and Dembo [6]. Previous research on nonlinear large deviations has only focused on random variables supported on $\{-1,+1\}^{n}$, a small subset of random objects people usually study, thus it is of natural interest and need to research the corresponding theory for random variables with general distributions. Since our results put fewer constraints on the random variables, it has considerable flexibility i…
We consider a $d$-dimensional random field $u = \{u(t,x)\}$ that solves a non-linear system of stochastic wave equations in spatial dimensions $k \in \{1,2,3\}$, driven by a spatially homogeneous Gaussian noise that is white in time. We mainly consider the case where the spatial covariance is given by a Riesz kernel with exponent $β$. Using Malliavin calculus, we establish upper and lower bounds on the probabilities that the random field visits a deterministic subset of $\IR^d$, in terms, respectively, of Hausdorff measure and Newtonian capacity of this set. The dimension that appears in the H…
We consider the model of random walk on dynamical percolation introduced by Peres, Stauffer and Steif (2015). We obtain comparison results for this model for hitting and mixing times and for the spectral-gap and log-Sobolev constant with the corresponding quantities for simple random walk on the underlying graph $G$, for general graphs. When $G$ is the torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$, we recover the results of Peres et al. and we also extend them to the critical case. We also obtain bounds in the cases where $G$ is a transitive graph of moderate growth and also when it is the hypercube.
Let $X= \{X(t), t \in \mathbb R^N\}$ be a centered Gaussian random field with values in $\mathbb R^d$ satisfying certain conditions and let $F \subset \mathbb R^d$ be a Borel set. In our main theorem, we provide a sufficient condition for $F$ to be polar for $X$, i.e. $\mathbb P \big( X(t) \in F \hbox{ for some } t \in \mathbb R^N \big) = 0$, which improves significantly the main result in Dalang et al [7], where the case of $F$ being a singleton was considered. We provide a variety of examples of Gaussian random field for which our result is applicable. Moreover, by using our main theorem, we…
Given an ergodic dynamical system $(X,T,μ)$, and $U\subset X$ measurable with $μ(U)>0$, let $μ(U)τ_U(x)$ denote the normalized hitting time of $x\in X$ to $U$. We prove that given a sequence $(U_n)$ with $μ(U_n)\to 0$, the distribution function of the normalized hitting times to $U_n$ converges weakly to some sub-probability distribution $F$ if and only if the distribution function of the normalized return time converges weakly to some distribution function $\tilde F$, and that in the converging case, $$ F(t)=\int_0^t(1-\tilde F(s))ds, t\ge 0.\tag$\diamondsuit$ $$ This in particular characteri…
We consider the hard-core model with Metropolis transition probabilities on finite grid graphs and investigate the asymptotic behavior of the first hitting time between its two maximum-occupancy configurations in the low-temperature regime. In particular, we show how the order-of-magnitude of this first hitting time depends on the grid sizes and on the boundary conditions by means of a novel combinatorial method. Our analysis also proves the asymptotic exponentiality of the scaled hitting time and yields the mixing time of the process in the low-temperature limit as side-result. In order to de…
Consider a sequence of continuous-time irreducible reversible Markov chains and a sequence of initial distributions, $μ_n$. The sequence is said to exhibit $μ_n$-cutoff if the convergence to stationarity in total variation distance is abrupt, w.r.t. this sequence of initial distributions. In this work we give a characterization of $μ_n$-cutoff for an arbitrary sequence of initial distributions $μ_n$ (in the above setup). Our characterization is expressed in terms of hitting times of sets which are "worst" w.r.t. $μ_n$. Consider a Markov chain on $Ω$ whose stationary distribution in $π$. Let $t…
Let $X$ be a $μ$-symmetric Hunt process on a LCCB space E. For an open set G $\subseteq$ E, let $τ_G$ be the exit time of $X$ from G and $A^G$ be the generator of the process killed when it leaves G. Let $r:[0,\infty[\to[0,\infty[$ and $R (t) = \int_0^t r(s) ds$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $\E_μ R (τ_G)<\infty$ in terms of the behavior near the origin of the spectral measure of $-A^G.$ When $r(t)=t^l$, $l>0$, by means of this condition we derive the Nash inequality for the killed process. In the case of one-dimensional diffusions, this permits to show that the existence of…
Let $E=\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}(g_n+ξ_n)$ be the random covering set on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, where $\{g_n\}$ is a sequence of ball-like sets and $ξ_n$ is a sequence of independent random variables uniformly distributed on $\T^d$. We prove that $E\cap F\neq\emptyset$ almost surely whenever $F\subset\mathbb{T}^d$ is an analytic set with Hausdorff dimension, $\dim_H(F)>d-α$, where $α$ is the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of $E$. Moreover, examples are given to show that the condition on $\dim_H(F)$ cannot be replaced by the packing dimension of $F$.
We consider the symmetric exclusion process {η_t,t>0} on {0,1}^{Z^d}. We fix a pattern A:={η:\sum_Λη(i)\ge k}, where Λis a finite subset of Z^d and k is an integer, and we consider the problem of establishing sharp estimates for τ, the hitting time of A. We present a novel argument based on monotonicity which helps in some cases to obtain sharp tail asymptotics for τin a simple way. Also, we characterize the trajectories {η_s,s\le t} conditioned on {τ>t}.
Predicting tropical cyclone (TC) rapid intensification (RI) is an important yet challenging task in current operational forecast due to our incomplete understanding of TC nonlinear processes. This study examines the variability of RI onset, including the probability of RI occurrence and the timing of RI onset, using a low-order stochastic model for TC development. Defining RI onset time as the first hitting time in the model for a given subset in the TC-scale state space, we quantify the probability of the occurrence of RI onset and the distribution of the timing of RI onset for a range of ini…
