This is a condensed exposition of the results of a future work, based on a talk of the second author at the Oberwolfach workshop "Poisson Geometry", April 30--4 May 2007.
In this paper, we generalize the notion of Serre fibration to the Morita category of topological groupoids and derive the associated long exact sequence of homotopy groups. We use this results for calculation of homotopy groups of various groupoids, such as the foliation groupoid of a Riemannian foliation.
We introduce a new notion of Morita equivalence for diffeological groupoids, generalising the original notion for Lie groupoids. For this we develop a theory of diffeological groupoid actions, -bundles and -bibundles. We define a notion of principality for these bundles, which uses the notion of a subduction, generalising the notion of a Lie group(oid) principal bundle. We say two diffeological groupoids are Morita equivalent if and only if there exists a biprincipal bibundle between them. Using a Hilsum-Skandalis tensor product, we further define a composition of diffeological bibundles, and …
Any etale Lie groupoid G is completely determined by its associated convolution algebra C_c(G) equipped with the natural Hopf algebroid structure. We extend this result to the generalized morphisms between etale Lie groupoids: we show that any principal H-bundle P over G is uniquely determined by the associated C_c(G)-C_c(H)-bimodule C_c(P) equipped with the natural coalgebra structure. Furthermore, we prove that the functor C_c gives an equivalence between the Morita category of etale Lie groupoids and the Morita category of locally grouplike Hopf algebroids.
We study vector bundles over Lie groupoids, known as VB-groupoids, and their induced geometric objects over differentiable stacks. We establish a fundamental theorem that characterizes VB-Morita maps in terms of fiber and basic data, and use it to prove the Morita invariance of VB-cohomology, with implications to deformation cohomology of Lie groupoids and of classic geometries. We discuss applications of our theory to Poisson geometry, providing a new insight over Marsden-Weinstein reduction and the integration of Dirac structures. We conclude by proving that the derived category of VB-groupo…
We study gauge transformations of Dirac structures and the relationship between gauge and Morita equivalences of Poisson manifolds. We describe how the symplectic structure of a symplectic groupoid is affected by a gauge transformation of the Poisson structure on its identity section, and prove that gauge-equivalent integrable Poisson structures are Morita equivalent. As an example, we study certain generic sets of Poisson structures on Riemann surfaces: we find complete gauge-equivalence invariants for such structures which, on the 2-sphere, yield a complete invariant of Morita equivalence.
These notes discuss various aspect of the ``representation theory'' of Poisson manifolds, with focus on Morita equivalence and Picard groups. We give a brief introduction to Poisson geometry (including Dirac and twisted Poisson structures) and algebraic Morita theory before presenting the geometric Morita theory of Poisson manifolds. We also point out the connections with the theory of symplectic groupoids and hamiltonian actions.
We consider principal bundles as generalized morphisms between topological groupoids. In the category of these generalized morphisms two topological groupoids are isomorphic if and only if they are Morita equivalent. We show that the fibers of a generalized morphism from H to G induce a singular foliation of the topological groupoid H, and we prove a Reeb-Thurston stability theorem for such foliations. Next, we use generalized morphisms to study some Morita invariants of topological groupoids, in particular the homotopy groups of a topological groupoid and the Connes convolution algebra of an …
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. Within the framework of Lie groupoids equipped with a special multiplicative form - called Pfaffian groupoids - we focus on principal bibundles and Morita equivalences. In particular, we discuss in details the notion of Pfaffian Morita equivalence, its relation to the gauge construction in the Pfaffian setting, and its interactions with principal actions. We briefly present some examples and applications to transiti…
This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the relationship between stacks on a site and groupoids internal to the site. It includes a rigorous proof of the folklore result that there is an equivalence between the bicategory of internal groupoids and the bicategory of geometric stacks. The second chapter discusses standard concepts in the theory of geometric stacks, including Morita equivalence, stack symmetries, and some Morita invariants. The third chapter introduces a new site of Dirac structures and provides a rigorous answer to the question: What is the stack a…
We extend the notion of the cardinality of a discrete groupoid (equal to the Euler characteristic of the corresponding discrete orbifold) to the setting of Lie groupoids. Since this quantity is an invariant under equivalence of groupoids, we call it the volume of the associated stack rather than of the groupoid itself. Since there is no natural measure in the smooth case like the counting measure in the discrete case, we need extra data to define the volume. This data has the form of an invariant section of a natural line bundle over the groupoid. Sections of a square root of this line bundle …
We discuss two sorts of generalization of Lie groupoids. One is Lie $n$-groupoids defined as simplicial manifolds with trivial $π_{k\geq n+1}$. The other is the stacky Lie groupoid $\cG\rra M$ with $\cG$ a differentiable stack. We build 1-1 correspondence between Lie 2-groupoids and stacky Lie groupoids up to a certain Morita equivalence. Equivalences of these higher groupoids are described.
An arbitrary Lie groupoid gives rise to a groupoid of germs of local diffeomorphisms over its base manifold, known as its effect. The effect of any bundle of Lie groups is trivial. All quotients of a given Lie groupoid determine the same effect. It is natural to regard the effects of any two Morita equivalent Lie groupoids as being equivalent. In this paper we shall describe a systematic way of comparing the effects of different Lie groupoids. In particular, we shall rigorously define what it means for two arbitrary Lie groupoids to give rise to equivalent effects. For effective orbifold group…
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
Stacky Lie groupoids are generalizations of Lie groupoids in which the "space of arrows" of the groupoid is a differentiable stack. In this paper, we consider actions of stacky Lie groupoids on differentiable stacks and their associated quotients. We provide a characterization of principal actions of stacky Lie groupoids, i.e., actions whose quotients are again differentiable stacks in such a way that the projection onto the quotient is a principal bundle. As an application, we extend the notion of Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids to the realm of stacky Lie groupoids, providing examples tha…
We give a precise and general description of gerbes valued in arbitrary crossed module and over an arbitrary differential stack. We do it using only Lie groupoids, hence ordinary differential geometry. We prove the coincidence with the existing notions by comparing our construction with non-Abelian cohomology.
We solve the integration problem for generalized complex manifolds, obtaining as the natural integrating object a weakly holomorphic symplectic groupoid, which is a real symplectic groupoid with a compatible complex structure defined only on the associated stack, i.e., only up to Morita equivalence. We explain how such objects differentiate to give generalized complex manifolds, and we show that a generalized complex manifold is integrable in this sense if and only if its underlying real Poisson structure is integrable. Crucial to our solution are several new technical tools which are of indep…
This is a concise introduction to the theory of Lie groupoids, with emphasis in their role as models for stacks. After some preliminaries, we review the foundations on Lie groupoids, and we carefully study equivalences and proper groupoids. Differentiable stacks are geometric objects which have manifolds and orbifolds as special instances, and can be presented as the transverse geometry of a Lie groupoid. Two Lie groupoids are equivalent if they are presenting the same stack, and proper groupoids are presentations of separated stacks, which by the linearization theorem are locally modeled by l…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures in context of differential geometry. The relevant notion is shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on differentiable stacks. More precisely, we develop the notion of Morita equivalence of quasi-Poisson groupoids. Thus isomorphism classes of $(+1)$ Poisson stack correspond to Morita equivalence classes of quasi-Poisson groupoids. In the process, we carry out the following programs of independent interests: (1) We introduce a $\mathbb Z$-graded Lie 2-algebra of polyvector fields on a given Lie groupoid and prove that its ho…
In this work we introduce the category of multiplicative sections of an $\la$-groupoid. We prove that this category carries natural strict Lie 2-algebra structures, which are Morita invariant. As applications, we study the algebraic structure underlying multiplicative vector fields on a Lie groupoid and in particular vector fields on differentiable stacks. We also introduce the notion of geometric vector field on the quotient stack of a Lie groupoid, showing that the space of such vector fields is a Lie algebra. We describe the Lie algebra of geometric vector fields in several cases, including…
We introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations - understood as suitable families of vector fields - that preserves their transverse geometry. Associated to every singular foliation there is a holonomy groupoid, by the work of Androulidakis-Skandalis. We show that our notion of equivalence is compatible with this assignment, and as a consequence we obtain several invariants. Further, we show that it unifies some of the notions of transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's.
In this PhD thesis, we have studied certain geometric structures over Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks. This thesis is based on the work [arXiv:2103.04560, arXiv:2012.08447, arXiv:2012.08442, arXiv:1907.00375]. In [arXiv:1907.00375], we have discussed the correspondence between two notions of a gerbe over a stack. In [arXiv:2012.08447], we have developed the notion of Chern-Weil map for principal bundles over a Lie groupoid when the Lie groupoid is equipped with a connection. In [arXiv:2012.08442], we discuss the notion of connection on the principal bundle over a Deligne Mumford stack …
We study isomorphism classes of symplectic dual pairs P <- S -> P-, where P is an integrable Poisson manifold, S is symplectic, and the two maps are complete, surjective Poisson submersions with connected and simply-connected fibres. For fixed P, these Morita self-equivalences of P form a group Pic(P) under a natural ``tensor product'' operation. We discuss this group in several examples and study variants of this construction for rings (the origin of the notion of Picard group), Lie groupoids, and symplectic groupoids.
Lie algebroids can not always be integrated into Lie groupoids. We introduce a new object--``Weinstein groupoid'', which is a differentiable stack with groupoid-like axioms. With it, we have solved the integration problem of Lie algebroids. It turns out that every Weinstein groupoid has a Lie algebroid and every Lie algebroid can be integrated into a Weinstein groupoid.

We associate to any integrable Poisson manifold a stack, i.e. a category fibered in groupoids over a site. The site in question has objects Dirac manifolds and morphisms pairs consisting of a smooth map and a closed 2-form. We show that two Poisson manifolds are symplectically Morita equivalent if and only if their associated stacks are isomorphic.
This doctoral thesis has two objectives. The first objective is to introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations that preserves their transverse geometry and is compatible with the notions of Morita equivalence of the holonomy groupoids and the transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's. The second one is to describe the structures behind quotients of singular foliations and to connect these results with their associated holonomy groupoids. It also wants to give an introduction to the notion of singular foliations as given by Androulidakis and Skandal…
We study Riemannian metrics on Lie groupoids in the relative setting. We show that any split fibration between proper groupoids can be made Riemannian, and we use these metrics to linearize proper groupoid fibrations. As an application, we derive rigidity theorems for Lie groupoids, which unify, simplify and improve similar results for classic geometries. Then we establish the Morita invariance for our metrics, introduce a notion for metrics on stacks, and use them to construct stacky tubular neighborhoods and to prove a stacky Ehresmann theorem.
Let $G$ be a finite group. Noncommutative geometry of unital $G$-algebras is studied. A geometric structure is determined by a spectral triple on the crossed product algebra associated with the group action. This structure is to be viewed as a representative of a noncommutative orbifold. Based on a study of classical orbifold groupoids, a Morita equivalence for the crossed product spectral triples is developed. Noncommutative orbifolds are Morita equivalence classes of the crossed product spectral triples. As a special case of this Morita theory one can study freeness of the $G$-action on the …
A symplectic groupoid $G.:=(G_1 \rightrightarrows G_0)$ determines a Poisson structure on $G_0$. In this case, we call $G.$ a symplectic groupoid of the Poisson manifold $G_0$. However, not every Poisson manifold $M$ has such a symplectic groupoid. This keeps us away from some desirable goals: for example, establishing Morita equivalence in the category of all Poisson manifolds. In this paper, we construct symplectic Weinstein groupoids which provide a solution to the above problem (Theorem \ref{main}). More precisely, we show that a symplectic Weinstein groupoid induces a Poisson structure on…
We define a Fréchet--Lie groupoid Map(S^1,X) of anafunctors from the circle into a Lie groupoid X. This provides a presentation of the Hom-stack Hom(S^1,\cX), where \cX is the di…
Starting with some motivating examples (classical atlases for a manifold, space of leaves of a foliation, group orbits), we propose to view a Lie groupoid as a generalized atlas for the "virtual structure" of its orbit space, the equivalence between atlases being here the smooth Morita equivalence. This "structure" keeps memory of the isotropy groups and of the smoothness as well. To take the smoothness into account, we claim that we can go very far by retaining just a few formal properties of embeddings and surmersions, yielding a very polymorphous unifying theory. We suggest further developm…
An orbifold is a Morita equivalence class of a proper {\' e}tale Lie groupoid. A unitary equivalence class of spectral triples over the algebra of smooth invariant functions are associated with any compact spin orbifold. In the case of an effective spin orbifold we construct a collection of spectral triples over the smooth convolution algebras of the representatives of the Morita equivalence class.
We introduce the notion of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for differentiable stacks and establish its relation with the groupoid Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for Lie groupoids.
The first goal of this survey paper is to argue that if orbifolds are groupoids, then the collection of orbifolds and their maps has to be thought of as a 2-category. Compare this with the classical definition of Satake and Thurston of orbifolds as a 1-category of sets with extra structure and/or with the "modern" definition of orbifolds as proper etale Lie groupoids up to Morita equivalence. The second goal is to describe two complementary ways of thinking of orbifolds as a 2-category: 1. the weak 2-category of foliation Lie groupoids, bibundles and equivariant maps between bibundles and 2. t…
We introduce the notion of cofoliation on a stack. A cofoliation is a change of the differentiable structure which amounts to giving a full representable smooth epimorphism. Cofoliations are uniquely determined by their associated Lie algebroids. Cofoliations on stacks arise from flat connections on groupoids. Connections on groupoids generalize connections on gerbes and bundles in a natural way. A flat connection on a groupoid is an integrable distribution of the morphism space compatible with the groupoid structure and complementary to both source and target fibres. A cofoliation of a stack …
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a Lie groupoid. The category $B\mathcal{G}$ of principal $\mathcal{G}$-bundles defines a differentiable stack. On the other hand, given a differentiable stack $\mathcal{D}$, there exists a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{H}$ such that $B\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{D}$. Define a gerbe over a stack as a morphism of stacks $F\colon \mathcal{D}\rightarrow \mathcal{C}$, such that $F$ and the diagonal map $Δ_F\colon \mathcal{D}\rightarrow \mathcal{D}\times_{\mathcal{C}}\mathcal{D}$ are epimorphisms. This paper explores the relationship between a gerbe defined above and a Mori…
A nice differential-geometric framework for (non-abelian) higher gauge theory is provided by principal 2-bundles, i.e. categorified principal bundles. Their total spaces are Lie groupoids, local trivializations are kinds of Morita equivalences, and connections are Lie-2-algebra-valued 1-forms. In this article, we construct explicitly the parallel transport of a connection on a principal 2-bundle. Parallel transport along a path is a Morita equivalence between the fibres over the end points, and parallel transport along a surface is an intertwiner between Morita equivalences. We prove that our …
For a compact manifold M and a differentiable stack \cX presented by a Lie groupoid X, we show the Hom-stack Hom(M,\cX) is presented by a Fréchet-Lie groupoid Map(M,X) and so is an infinite-dimensional differentiable stack. We further show that if \cX is an orbifold, presented by a proper étale Lie groupoid, then Map(M,X) is proper étale and so presents an infinite-dimensional orbifold.
In this paper we consider deformations of an algebroid stack on an etale groupoid. We construct a differential graded Lie algebra (DGLA) which controls this deformation theory. In the case when the algebroid is a twisted form of functions we show that this DGLA is quasiisomorphic to the twist of the DGLA of Hochschild cochains on the algebra of functions on the groupoid by the characteristic class of the corresponding gerbe.
We show that the category of vector fields on a geometric stack has the structure of a Lie 2-algebra. This proves a conjecture of R.~Hepworth. The construction uses a Lie groupoid that presents the geometric stack. We show that the category of vector fields on the Lie groupoid is equivalent to the category of vector fields on the stack. The category of vector fields on the Lie groupoid has a Lie 2-algebra structure built from known (ordinary) Lie brackets on multiplicative vector fields of Mackenzie and Xu and the global sections of the Lie algebroid of the Lie groupoid. After giving a precise…
