The paper has been completely rewritten. The technical core remains unchanged, but the context has changed entirely. We do not claim any more that additional structure on a stack is needed to obtain the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence. We renamed "parallel structures" on groupoids "flat connections" and changed entirely the nature of the structure induced on stacks by flat groupoids. Citations and acknowledgements have been added. New version has 37 pages
We introduce the notion of cofoliation on a stack. A cofoliation is a change of the differentiable structure which amounts to giving a full representable smooth epimorphism. Cofoliations are uniquely determined by their associated Lie algebroids.
Cofoliations on stacks arise from flat connections on groupoids. Connections on groupoids generalize connections on gerbes and bundles in a natural way. A flat connection on a groupoid is an integrable distribution of the morphism space compatible with the groupoid structure and complementary to both source and target fibres. A cofoliation of a stack determines the flat groupoid up to etale equivalence.
We show how a cofoliation on a stack gives rise to a refinement of the Hodge to De Rham spectral sequence, where the E1-term consists entirely of vector bundle valued cohomology groups.
Our theory works for differentiable, holomorphic and algebraic stacks.
The author constructs a theory of dagger formal schemes over $R$ and then defines the de Rham cohomology for flat dagger formal schemes $X$ with integral and regular reductions $\bar{X}$ which generalizes the Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. Finally the author gets Lefschetz' fixed pointed formula for $X$ with certain conditions.
This article constructs Von Neumann invariants for constructible complexes and coherent D-modules on compact complex manifolds, generalizing the work of the author on coherent L 2-cohomology. We formulate a conjectural generalization of Dingoyan's L 2-Mixed Hodge structures in terms of Saito's Mixed Hodge Modules and give partial results in this direction. 2020 AMS Classification: 32J27.
In the 1960s, Dwork developed a p-adic cohomology theory of de Rham type for varieties over finite fields, based on a trace formula for the action of a Frobenius operator on certain spaces of p-adic analytic functions. One can consider a purely algebraic analogue of Dwork's theory for varieties over a field of characteristic zero and ask what is the connection between this theory and ordinary de Rham cohomology. N. Katz showed that Dwork cohomology coincides with the primitive part of de Rham cohomology for smooth projective hypersurfaces, but the exact relationship for varieties of higher cod…
We show that hypergeometric differential equations, unitary and Gauss-Manin connections give rise to de Rham cohomology sheaves which do not admit a Bloch-Ogus resolution. The latter is in contrast to Panin's theorem asserting that corresponding étale cohomology sheaves do fulfill Bloch-Ogus theory.
Building up on work of Epstein, May and Drury, we define and investigate the mod $p$ Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of smooth algebraic stacks over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We then compute the action of the operations on the de Rham cohomology of classifying stacks for finite groups, connected reductive groups for which $p$ is not a torsion prime, and (special) orthogonal groups when $p=2$.
The goal of this short paper is to give a slightly different perspective on the comparison between crystalline cohomology and de Rham cohomology. Most notably, we reprove Berthelot's comparison result without using pd-stratifications, linearisations, and pd-differential operators.
For any hyperelliptic curve X, we give an explicit basis of the first de-Rham cohomology of X in terms of Čech cohomology. We use this to produce a family of curves in characteristic p>2 for which the Hodge-de-Rham short exact sequence does not split equivariantly; this generalises a result of Hortsch. Further, we use our basis to show that the hyperelliptic involution acts on the first de-Rham cohomology by multiplication by -1, i.e., acts as the identity when p=2.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
We give a definition and study the basic properties of the irregular Hodge filtration on the exponentially twisted de Rham cohomology of a smooth quasi-projective complex variety.
In this short paper, we use Tannakian reconstruction techniques to prove a result that explains how to reconstruct the stacky approach to de Rham cohomology from the classical theory algebraic de Rham cohomology via an application of the adjoint functor theorem.

This is a review article discussing the de Rham cohomology of period domains of Hodge structures. We explain it as the de Rham cohomology of differentiable stacks as of a moduli space. We also discuss the cohomology of the partial toroidal compactification of these domains using known formulas on cohomology or Chow rings of toric structures. The text is expository and we have tried to connect some existing ideas that probably their relations not processed in the literature of Hodge theory. We state the significance of ideas as they naturally could be related, probably with not serious mathemat…
We construct a functorial decomposition of de Rham cohomology sheaves, called weight decomposition, for smooth analytic spaces over non-Archimedean fields embeddable into $\mathbf{C}_p$, which generalizes a construction of Berkovich and solves a question raised by him. We then investigate complexes of real tropical differential forms and currents introduced by Chambert-Loir and Ducros, by establishing a relation with the weight decomposition and defining tropical cycle maps with values in the corresponding Dolbeault cohomology. As an application, we show that algebraic cycles that are cohomolo…
We show that Illusie's derived de Rham cohomology (Hodge-completed) coincides with Hartshorne's algebraic de Rham cohomology for a finite type map of noetherian schemes in characteristic 0; the case of lci morphisms was a result of Illusie. In particular, the E_1-differentials in the derived Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence for singular varieties are often non-zero. Another consequence is a completely elementary description of Hartshorne's algebraic de Rham cohomology: it is computed by the completed Amitsur complex for any variety in characteristic 0.
We prove that algebraic de Rham cohomology as a functor defined on smooth $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebras is formally étale in a precise sense. This result shows that given de Rham cohomology, one automatically obtains the theory of crystalline cohomology as its unique functorial deformation. To prove this, we define and study the notion of a pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$-module and its refinement which we call a quasi-ideal in $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$ -- following Drinfeld's terminology. Our main constructions show that there is a way to "unwind" any pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\text{perf}}…
For a big class of smooth dagger spaces --- dagger spaces are 'rigid spaces with overconvergent structure sheaf' --- we prove finite dimensionality of de Rham cohomology. This is enough to obtain finiteness of Berthelot's rigid cohomology also in the non-smooth case. We need a careful study of de Rham cohomology in situations of semi-stable reduction.
We prove a Hodge-type decomposition for the de-Rham cohomology of $ p$-adically uniformized varieties by the product of Drinfeld's symmetric spaces. It is based on work of Schneider, Stuhler, Iovita and Spiess on the cohomology of Drinfeld's symmetric space.
We establish a comparison isomorphism between prismatic cohomology and derived de Rham cohomology respecting various structures, such as their Frobenius actions and filtrations. As an application, when $X$ is a proper smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal O_K$ with $K$ being a $p$-adic field, we improve Breuil--Caruso's theory on comparison between torsion crystalline cohomology and torsion étale cohomology.
We define de Rham cohomology groups for rigid spaces over non-archimedean fields of characteristic zero, based on the notion of dagger space. We establish some functorial properties and a finiteness result, and discuss the relation to the rigid cohomology as defined by P. Berthelot.
This paper studies the derived de Rham cohomology of F_p and p-adic schemes, and is inspired by Beilinson's recent work. Generalising work of Illusie, we construct a natural isomorphism between derived de Rham cohomology and crystalline cohomology for lci maps of such schemes, as well logarithmic variants. These comparisons give derived de Rham descriptions of the usual period rings and related maps in p-adic Hodge theory. Placing these ideas in the skeleton of Beilinson's construction leads to a new proof of Fontaine's crystalline conjecture and Fontaine-Jannsen's semistable conjecture.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$, $W_n = W_n(k)$. For separated $k$-schemes of finite type, we explain how rigid cohomology with compact supports can be computed as the cohomology of certain de Rham-Witt complexes with coefficients. This result generalizes the classical comparison theorem of Bloch-Illusie for proper and smooth schemes. In the proof, the key step is an extension of the Bloch-Illusie theorem to the case of cohomologies relative to $W_n$ with coefficients in a crystal that is only supposed to be flat over $W_n$.
In this article, we prove the comparison theorem between the relative log de Rham-Witt cohomology and the relative log crystalline cohomology for a log smooth saturated morphism of fs log schemes satisfying certain condition. Our result covers the case where the base fs log scheme is etale locally log smooth over a scheme with trivial log structure or the case where the base fs log scheme is hollow, and so it generalizes the previously known results of Matsuue. In Appendix, we prove that our relative log de Rham-Witt complex and our comparison map are compatible with those of Hyodo-Kato.
Let X be a smooth complex algebraic variety with the Zariski topology, and let Y be the underlying complex manifold with the complex topology. Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem asserts that the singular cohomology of Y with complex coefficients can be computed from the complex of sheaves of algebraic differential forms on X. This article gives an elementary proof of Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem, elementary in the sense that we use only tools from standard textbooks as well as Serre's FAC and GAGA papers.
We prove an effective bound for the degrees of generators of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of smooth affine hypersurfaces. In particular, we show that the de Rham cohomology H_dR^p(X) of a smooth hypersurface X of degree d in C^n can be generated by differential forms of degree d^O(pn). This result is relevant for the algorithmic computation of the cohomology, but is also motivated by questions in the theory of ordinary differential equations related to the infinitesimal Hilbert 16th problem.
We define the twisted de Rham cohomology and show how to use it to define the notion of an integral of the form $\int g(x) e^{f(x)}dx$ over an arbitrary ring. We discuss also a definition of a family of integrals and some properties of the homological definition of integral. We show how to use the twisted de Rham cohomology in order to define the Frobenius map on the p-adic cohomology. Finally, we consider two-dimensional topological quantum field theories with general coefficients.
The goal of this small note is to extend a result by Christopher Davis and David Zureick-Brown on the comparison between integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology and overconvergent de~Rham-Witt cohomology for a smooth variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic $p$ to all cohomological degrees independent of the dimension of the base or the prime number $p$. Le but de ce travail est de prolonger un résultat de Christopher Davis et David Zureick-Brown concernant la comparaison entre la cohomologie de Monsky-Washnitzer entière et la cohomologie de de~Rham-Witt surconvergente d'une varié…
For the split group $G_{2}$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{C}}.$ For the spin groups $\textrm{Spin}(n)$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{C}}$ for $n \leq 10.$ For $n=11,$ we make a full computation of the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{…
We show that Aomoto's $q$-deformation of de Rham cohomology arises as a natural cohomology theory for $Λ$-rings. Moreover, Scholze's $(q-1)$-adic completion of $q$-de Rham cohomology depends only on the Adams operations at each residue characteristic. This gives a fully functorial cohomology theory, including a lift of the Cartier isomorphism, for smooth formal schemes in mixed characteristic equipped with a suitable lift of Frobenius. If we attach $p$-power roots of $q$, the resulting theory is independent even of these lifts of Frobenius, refining a comparison by Bhatt, Morrow and Scholze.
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
We prove that the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequence for smooth proper tame Artin stacks in characteristic p (as defined by Abramovich, Olsson, and Vistoli) which lift mod p^2 degenerates. We push the result to the coarse spaces of such stacks, thereby obtaining a degeneracy result for schemes which are etale locally the quotient of a smooth scheme by a finite linearly reductive group scheme.
In their paper which introduced Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology, Monsky and Washnitzer described conditions under which the definition can be adapted to give integral cohomology groups. It seems to be well-known among experts that their construction always gives well-defined integral cohomology groups, but this fact also does not appear to be explicitly written down anywhere. In this paper, we prove that the integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology groups are well-defined, for any nonsingular affine variety over a perfect field of characteristic p. We then compare these cohomology groups with overco…
Let $X=\C^n$. In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the de Rham cohomology groups $H^i_{dR}(U,\C)$ where $U$ is the complement of an arbitrary Zariski-closed set $Y$ in $X$. Our algorithm is a merger of the algorithm given by T.~Oaku and N.~Takayama (\cite{O-T2}), who considered the case where $Y$ is a hypersurface, and our methods from \cite{W-1} for the computation of local cohomology. We further extend the algorithm to compute de Rham cohomology groups with support $H^i_{dR,Z}(U,\C)$ where again $U$ is an arbitrary Zariski-open subset of $X$ and $Z$ is an arbitrary Zariski-clo…
In this article, we analyze the connection between the Log De Rham Cohomology of an fs (not necessary log smooth) log scheme $Y$ over $\mathbb C$ (for $Y$ admitting an exact closed immersion into an fs log smooth log scheme over $\mathbb C$), its Log Infinitesimal Cohomology $H^{^.}(Y^{log}_{inf}, \mathcal O_{Y^{log}_{inf}})$, and its Log Betti Cohomology, which is the Cohomology of its associated Kato-Nakayama topological space $Y^{an}_{log}$, and we prove that they are isomorphic. These results are the log scheme analogues of two classical comparison theorems.
We use the Beilinson $t$-structure on filtered complexes and the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem to construct filtrations on the negative cyclic and periodic cyclic homologies of a scheme $X$ with graded pieces given by the Hodge-completion of the derived de Rham cohomology of $X$. Such filtrations have previously been constructed by Loday in characteristic zero and by Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze for $p$-complete negative cyclic and periodic cyclic homology in the quasisyntomic case.
O-minimal geometry generalizes both semialgebraic and subanalytic geometries, and has been very successful in solving special cases of some problems in arithmetic geometry, such as André-Oort conjecture. Among the many tools developed in an o-minimal setting are cohomology theories for abstract-definable continuous manifolds such as singular cohomology, sheaf cohomology and \v Cech cohomology, which have been used for instance to prove Pillay's conjecture concerning definably compact groups. In the present paper we elaborate an o-minimal de Rham cohomology theory for abstract-definable $\mathc…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective $R$-scheme, where $R$ is a smooth $\Z$-algebra. As constructed by Hesselholt, we have the absolute big de Rham-Witt complex $\WΩ^*_X$ of $X$ at our disposal. There is also a relative version $\WΩ^*_{X/R}$ with $\W(R)$-linear differential. In this paper we study the hypercohomology of the relative (big) de Rham-Witt complex after truncation with finite truncation sets $S$. We show that it is a projective $\W_S(R)$-module, provided that the de Rham cohomology is a flat $R$-module. In addition, we establish a Poincaré duality theorem.
For a natural number $m$, let $\mathcal{S}_m/\mathbb{F}_2$ be the $m$th Suzuki curve. We study the mod $2$ Dieudonné module of $\mathcal{S}_m$, which gives the equivalent information as the Ekedahl-Oort type or the structure of the $2$-torsion group scheme of its Jacobian. We accomplish this by studying the de Rham cohomology of $\mathcal{S}_m$. For all $m$, we determine the structure of the de Rham cohomology as a $2$-modular representation of the $m$th Suzuki group and the structure of a submodule of the mod $2$ Dieudonné module. For $m=1$ and $2$, we determine the complete structure of the …
Let X be Drinfeld's half space over a p-adic field K. The de Rham cohomology of X was first computed by Schneider and Stuhler. Afterwards there were given different proofs by Alon, de Shalit, Iovita and Spiess. This paper presents yet another approach for the determination of these invariants by analysing the de Rham complex of X from the viewpoint of recent results by the author.
The title refers to the nilcommutative or $NC$-schemes introduced by M. Kapranov in math.AG/9802041. The latter are noncommutative nilpotent thickenings of commutative schemes. We consider also the parallel theory of nil-Poisson or $NP$-schemes, which are nilpotent thickenings of commutative schemes in the category of Poisson schemes. We study several variants of de Rham cohomology for $NC$- and $NP$-schemes. The variants include nilcommutative and nil-Poisson versions of the de Rham complex as well as of the cohomology of the infinitesimal site introduced by Grothendieck. It turns out that ea…
Milne's correcting factor, which appears in the Zeta-value at $s=n$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, is the Euler characteristic of the derived de Rham cohomology of $X/\mathbb{Z}$ modulo the Hodge filtration $F^n$. In this note, we extend this result to arbitrary separated schemes of finite type over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of dimension at most $d$, provided resolution of singularities for schemes of dimension at most $d$ holds. More precisely, we show that Geisser's generalization of Milne's factor, whenever it is well defined, is the Euler characteristic of the …
We reinterpret algebraic de Rham cohomology for a possibly singular complex variety X as sheaf cohomology in the site of smooth schemes over X with Voevodsky's h-topology. Our results extend to the algebraic de Rham complex as well. Our main technique is to extend Cech cohomology of hypercovers to arbitrary local acyclic fibrations of simplicial presheaves.
We show that the bounded derived category of regular holonomic D-modules on a smooth variety is equivalent to the homotopy catgory of compact (or constructible) modules over the motivic ring spectrum $H_{dR}$ representing algebraic de Rham cohomology. This equivalence is compatible with the six functors on both sides. This way, the classical functors in the world of D-modules, $f_! := D_Y f_* D_X, f^* := D_X f^! D_Y$ ($f: X \to Y$), are conceptually explained and embedded into a larger and more flexible framework. We also apply this equivalence to obtain a motivic t-structure on $H_{dR}$-modul…
Grothendieck has proved that each class in the de Rham cohomology of a smooth complex affine variety can be represented by a differential form with polynomial coefficients. After having proved a single exponential bound for the degrees of these forms in the case of a hypersurface, here we generalize this result to arbitrary codimension. More precisely, we show that the p-th de Rham cohomology of a smooth affine variety of dimension m and degree D can be represented by differential forms of degree (pD)^{O(pm)}. This result is relevant for the algorithmic computation of the cohomology, but is al…
We explain how to construct a cohomology theory on the category of separated quasi-compact smooth rigid spaces over $\mathbf{C}_p$ (or more general base fields), taking values in the category of vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve, which extends (in a suitable sense) Hyodo-Kato cohomology when the rigid space has a semi-stable proper formal model over the ring of integers of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$. This cohomology theory factors through the category of rigid analytic motives of Ayoub.
