A symplectic groupoid $G.:=(G_1 \rightrightarrows G_0)$ determines a Poisson structure on $G_0$. In this case, we call $G.$ a symplectic groupoid of the Poisson manifold $G_0$. However, not every Poisson manifold $M$ has such a symplectic groupoid. This keeps us away from some desirable goals: for example, establishing Morita equivalence in the category of all Poisson manifolds. In this paper, we construct symplectic Weinstein groupoids which provide a solution to the above problem (Theorem \ref{main}). More precisely, we show that a symplectic Weinstein groupoid induces a Poisson structure on its base manifold, and that to every Poisson manifold there is an associated symplectic Weinstein groupoid.
Lie algebroids can not always be integrated into Lie groupoids. We introduce a new object--``Weinstein groupoid'', which is a differentiable stack with groupoid-like axioms. With it, we have solved the integration problem of Lie algebroids. It turns out that every Weinstein groupoid has a Lie algebroid and every Lie algebroid can be integrated into a Weinstein groupoid.
We associate to any integrable Poisson manifold a stack, i.e. a category fibered in groupoids over a site. The site in question has objects Dirac manifolds and morphisms pairs consisting of a smooth map and a closed 2-form. We show that two Poisson manifolds are symplectically Morita equivalent if and only if their associated stacks are isomorphic.
This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the relationship between stacks on a site and groupoids internal to the site. It includes a rigorous proof of the folklore result that there is an equivalence between the bicategory of internal groupoids and the bicategory of geometric stacks. The second chapter discusses standard concepts in the theory of geometric stacks, including Morita equivalence, stack symmetries, and some Morita invariants. The third chapter introduces a new site of Dirac structures and provides a rigorous answer to the question: What is the stack a…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures in context of differential geometry. The relevant notion is shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on differentiable stacks. More precisely, we develop the notion of Morita equivalence of quasi-Poisson groupoids. Thus isomorphism classes of $(+1)$ Poisson stack correspond to Morita equivalence classes of quasi-Poisson groupoids. In the process, we carry out the following programs of independent interests: (1) We introduce a $\mathbb Z$-graded Lie 2-algebra of polyvector fields on a given Lie groupoid and prove that its ho…
This is a condensed exposition of the results of a future work, based on a talk of the second author at the Oberwolfach workshop "Poisson Geometry", April 30--4 May 2007.
We study the integrability of Poisson and Dirac structures that arise from quotient constructions. From our results we deduce several classical results as well as new applications. We also give explicit constructions of Lie groupoids integrating two interesting families of geometric structures: (i) a special class of Poisson homogeneous spaces of symplectic groupoids integrating Poisson groups and (ii) Dirac homogeneous spaces.
An anologue of the Calabi invariant for Poisson manifolds is considered. For any Poisson manifold $P$, the Poisson bracket on $C^{\infty}(P)$ extends to a Lie bracket on the space $Ω^{1}(P)$ of all differential one-forms, under which the space $Z^{1}(P)$ of closed one-forms and the space $B^{1}(P)$ of exact one-forms are Lie subalgebras. These Lie algebras are related by the exact sequence: $$0\lon \reals \lon C^{\infty}(P)\stackrel{d}{\lon} Z^{1}(P)\stackrel{f}{\lon} H^{1}(P, \reals)\lon 0, $$ where $H^{1}(P,\reals)$ is considered as a trivial Lie algebra, and $f$ is the map sending each clos…
We show that various notions of integrability for Poisson brackets are all equivalent, and we give the precise obstructions to integrating Poisson manifolds. We describe the integration as a symplectic quotient, in the spirit of the Poisson sigma-model of Cattaneo and Felder. For regular Poisson manifolds we express the obstructions in terms of variations of symplectic areas. As an application of these results, we show that a Poisson manifold admits a complete symplectic realization if, and only if, it is integrable. We discuss also the integration of submanifolds and Morita equivalence of Poi…
In this paper we study Poisson actions of complete Poisson groups, without any connectivity assumption or requiring the existence of a momentum map. For any complete Poisson group $G$ with dual $G^\star$ we obtain a suitably connected integrating symplectic double groupoid $\calS$. As a consequence, the cotangent lift of a Poisson action on an integrable Poisson manifold $P$ can be integrated to a Poisson action of the symplectic groupoid $\poidd{\calS}{G^\star}$ on the symplectic groupoid for $P$. Finally, we show that the quotient Poisson manifold $P/G$ is also integrable, giving an explicit…
A group, defined as set with associative multiplication and inverse, is a natural structure describing the symmetry of a space. The concept of group generalizes to group objects internal to other categories than sets. But there are yet more general objects that can still be thought of as groups in many ways, such as quantum groups. We explain some of the generalizations of groups which arise in Poisson geometry and quantization: the germ of a topological group, Poisson Lie groups, rigid monoidal structures on symplectic realizations, groupoids, 2-groups, stacky Lie groups, and hopfish algebras…
We show that the leaves of an LA-groupoid which pass through the unit manifold are, modulo a connectedness issue, Lie groupoids. We illustrate this phenomenon by considering the cotangent Lie algebroids of Poisson groupoids thus obtaining an interesting class of symplectic groupoids coming from their symplectic foliations. In particular, we show that for a (strict) Lie 2-group the coadjoint orbits of the units in the dual of its Lie 2-algebra are symplectic groupoids, meaning that the classical Kostant-Kirillov-Souriau symplectic forms on these special coadjoint orbits are multiplicative.
We look at Poisson geometry taking the viewpoint of singular foliations, understood as suitable submodules generated by Hamiltonian vector fields rather than partitions into (symplectic) leaves. The class of Poisson structures which behave best from this point of view, are those whose submodule generated by Hamiltonian vector fields arises from a smooth holonomy groupoid. We call them almost regular Poisson structures and determine them completely. They include regular Poisson and log symplectic manifolds, as well as several other Poisson structures whose symplectic foliation presents singular…
We study Maurer-Cartan elements on homotopy Poisson manifolds of degree $n$. They unify many twisted or homotopy structures in Poisson geometry and mathematical physics, such as twisted Poisson manifolds, quasi-Poisson $\g$-manifolds, and twisted Courant algebroids. Using the fact that the dual of an $n$-term $L_\infty$-algebra is a homotopy Poisson manifold of degree $n-1$, we obtain a Courant algebroid from a $2$-term $L_\infty$-algebra $\g$ via the degree $2$ symplectic NQ-manifold $T^*[2]\g^*[1]$. By integrating the Lie quasi-bialgebroid associated to the Courant algebroid, we obtain a Lie…
Coupling Dirac structures are Dirac structures defined on the total space of a fibration, generalizing hamiltonian fibrations from symplectic geometry, where one replaces the symplectic structure on the fibers by a Poisson structure. We study the associated Poisson gauge theory, in order to describe the presymplectic groupoid integrating coupling Dirac structures. We find the obstructions to integrability and we give explicit geometric descriptions of the integration.
The semi-classical data attached to stacks of algebroids in the sense of Kashiwara and Kontsevich are Maurer-Cartan elements on complex manifolds, which we call extended Poisson structures as they generalize holomorphic Poisson structures. A canonical Lie algebroid is associated to each Maurer-Cartan element. We study the geometry underlying these Maurer-Cartan elements in the light of Lie algebroid theory. In particular, we extend Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology and Koszul-Brylinski homology to the realm of extended Poisson manifolds; we establish a sufficient criterion for these to be finite…
In this note a functorial approach to the integration problem of an LA-groupoid to a double Lie groupoid is discussed. To do that, we study the notions of fibred products in the categories of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such. In particular, it turns out, that the fibred product of Lie algebroids along integrable morphisms is always integrable by a fibred product of Lie groupoids. We show that to every LA-groupoid with integrable top structure one can associate a differentiable graph in the category of Lie groupoids, which is…
A complex Lie algebroid is a complex vector bundle over a smooth (real) manifold M with a bracket on sections and an anchor to the complexified tangent bundle of M which satisfy the usual Lie algebroid axioms. A proposal is made here to integrate analytic complex Lie algebroids by using analytic continuation to a complexification of M and integration to a holomorphic groupoid. A collection of diverse examples reveal that the holomorphic stacks presented by these groupoids tend to coincide with known objects associated to structures in complex geometry. This suggests that the object integrating…
We provide explicit formulas for integrating multiplicative forms on local Lie groupoids in terms of infinitesimal data. Combined with our previous work [8], which constructs the local Lie groupoid of a Lie algebroid, these formulas produce concrete integrations of several geometric stuctures defined infinitesimally. In particular, we obtain local integrations and non-degenerate realizations of Poisson, Nijenhuis-Poisson, Dirac, and Jacobi structures by local symplectic, symplectic-Nijenhuis, presymplectic, and contact groupoids, respectively.
We study vector bundles over Lie groupoids, known as VB-groupoids, and their induced geometric objects over differentiable stacks. We establish a fundamental theorem that characterizes VB-Morita maps in terms of fiber and basic data, and use it to prove the Morita invariance of VB-cohomology, with implications to deformation cohomology of Lie groupoids and of classic geometries. We discuss applications of our theory to Poisson geometry, providing a new insight over Marsden-Weinstein reduction and the integration of Dirac structures. We conclude by proving that the derived category of VB-groupo…
