We give a complete list of normal forms for the 2-dimensional metrics that admit a transitive Lie pseudogroup of geodesic-preserving transformations and we show that these normal forms are mutually non-isometric. This solves a problem posed by Sophus Lie.
We give a complete list of mutually non-diffeomorphic normal forms for the two-dimensional metrics that admit one essential (i.e., non-homothetic) projective vector field. This revises a result from the literature and extends the results of two papers, by R.L. Bryant & G. Manno & V.S. Matveev (2008) and V.S. Matveev (2012) respectively, solving a problem posed by Sophus Lie in 1882.
We give a complete list of two-dimensional metrics that admit an essential projective vector field. This solves a problem explicitly posed by Sophus Lie in 1882.
Projective vector fields are the infinitesimal transformations whose local flow preserves geodesics up to reparametrisation. In 1882 Sophus Lie posed the problem of describing 2-dimensional metrics admitting a non-trivial projective vector field, which was solved in recent years. In the present paper, we solve the analog of Lie's problem in dimension 3, for Riemannian metrics and, more generally, for Levi-Civita metrics of arbitrary signature.
The paper is devoted to the complete classification of all real Lie algebras of contact vector fields on the first jet space of one-dimensional submanifolds in the plane. This completes Sophus Lie's classification of all possible Lie algebras of contact symmetries for ordinary differential equations. As a main tool we use the abstract theory of filtered and graded Lie algebras. We also describe all differential and integral invariants of new Lie algebras found in the paper and discuss the infinite-dimensional case.
The main goal is to classify 4-dimensional real Lie algebras $\g$ which admit a para-hypercomplex structure. This is a step toward the classification of Lie groups admitting the corresponding left-invariant structure and therefore possessing a neutral, left-invariant, anti-self-dual metric. Our study is related to the work of Barberis who classified real, 4-dimensional simply-connected Lie groups which admit an invariant hypercomplex structure.
We classify the 6-dimensional Lie algebras of the form $g\times g$ that admit integrable complex structure. We also endow a Lie algebra of the kind $o(n)\oplus o(n)$ with such a complex structure. The motivation comes from geometric structures á la Sasaki on $g$-manifolds.
We show that in dimension 2 every Finsler metric with at least 3-dimensional Lie algebra of projective vector fields is locally projectively equivalent to a Randers metric. We give a short list of such Finsler metrics which is complete up to coordinate change and projective equivalence.
Two-dimensional case in the theory of dynamical systems admitting the normal shift differs crucially from multidimensional case. Features of two-dimensional case are gathered and studied in this thesis.
In this paper, it is proved that a connected 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold or a closed connected semi-Riemannian manifold $M^n$($n>1$) admitting a projective vector field with a non-linearizable singularity is projectively flat.
A vector field on a Kähler manifold is called c-projective if its flow preserves the J-planar curves. We give a complete local classification of Kähler real 4-dimensional manifolds that admit an essential c-projective vector field. An important technical step is a local description of 4-dimensional c-projectively equivalent metrics of arbitrary signature. As an application of our results we prove the natural analog of the classical Yano-Obata conjecture in the pseudo-Riemannian 4-dimensional case.
We prove that any real Lie group of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat projective structure. We also prove that a real Lie group L of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat affine structure if and only if the Lie algebra of L is not perfect.
In the present paper, we introduce the notion of $\ast$-Miao-Tam critical equation on almost contact metric manifolds and studied on a class of almost Kenmotsu manifold. It is shown that if the metric of a $(2n + 1)$-dimensional $(k,μ)'$-almost Kenmotsu manifold $(M,g)$ satisfies the $\ast$-Miao-Tam critical equation, then the manifold $(M,g)$ is $\ast$-Ricci flat and locally isometric to the Riemannian product of a $(n + 1)$-dimensional manifold of constant sectional curvature $-4$ and a flat $n$-dimensional manifold. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to support the main theorem.
In (equi-)affine differential geometry, the most important algebraic invariants are the affine (Blaschke) metric h, the affine shape operator S and the difference tensor K. A hypersurface is said to admit a pointwise symmetry if at every point there exists a linear transformation preserving the affine metric, the affine shape operator and the difference tensor K. The study of submanifolds which admit pointwise isometries was initiated by Bryant (math.DG/0007128). In this paper, we consider the 3-dimensional positive definite hypersurfaces for which at each point the group of symmetries is isom…
We classify all seven-dimensional spaces which admit a homogeneous cosymplectic G2-structure. The motivation for this classification is that each of these spaces is a possible principal orbit of a parallel Spin(7)-manifold of cohomogeneity one.
Compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds that have parallel Weyl tensor without being conformally flat or locally symmetric are known to exist in infinitely many dimensions greater than 4. We prove some general topological properties of such manifolds, namely, vanishing of the Euler characteristic and real Pontryagin classes, and infiniteness of the fundamental group. We also show that, in the Lorentzian case, each of them is at least 5-dimensional and admits a two-fold cover which is a bundle over the circle.
By a recent result, it is known that compact homogeneous spaces with co-index of symmetry 4 are quotients of a semisimple Lie group of dimension at most 10. In this paper we determine exactly which ones of these spaces actually admit such a metric. For all the admissible spaces we construct explicit examples of these metrics.
In this note we give a direct method to classify all stable forms on $\R^n$ as well as to determine their automorphism groups. We show that in dimension 6,7,8 stable forms coincide with non-degnerate forms. We present necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for a manifold to admit a stable form. We also discuss rich properties of the geometry of such manifolds.
The paper is devoted to the investigation of four-dimensional Kahler manifolds admitting non-affine H-projective mappings. We find all such manifolds which are non-Einstein. In the paper also Kahler manifolds admitting infinitesimal H-projective transformations are determined. It is proved that the class of Kahler manifolds admitting H-projective mappings includes generalized equidistant Kahler manifolds. The explicit expression for the metrics of Ricci-flat four-dimensional generalized equidistant manifolds is given.
We study locally conformally balanced metrics on almost abelian Lie algebras, namely solvable Lie algebras admitting an abelian ideal of codimension one, providing characterizations in every dimension. Moreover, we classify six-dimensional almost abelian Lie algebras admitting locally conformally balanced metrics and study some compatibility results between different types of special Hermitian metrics on almost abelian Lie groups and their compact quotients. We end by classifying almost abelian Lie algebras admitting locally conformally hyperkähler structures.
The equation determining whether a projective structure admits a connection in its given projective class that has skew-symmetric Ricci tensor is an overdetermined system of semi-linear partial differential equations which we call the projective Einstein-Weyl (pEW) equation. In 2-dimensions, we give local obstructions for projective surfaces to admit such a connection in its projective class. The obstructions are the resultants of polynomial equations that have to be satisfied for there to admit any pEW solution.
In this article we study an almost $f$-cosymplectic manifold admitting a Ricci soliton. We first prove that there do not exist Ricci solitons on an almost cosymplectic $(κ,μ)$-manifold. Further, we consider an almost $f$-cosymplectic manifold admitting a Ricci soliton whose potential vector field is the Reeb vector field and show that a three dimesional almost $f$-cosymplectic is a cosymplectic manifold. Finally we classify a three dimensional $η$-Einstein almost $f$-cosymplectic manifold admitting a Ricci soliton.
An affine hypersurface M is said to admit a pointwise symmetry, if there exists a subgroup G of Aut(T_p M) for all p in M, which preserves (pointwise) the affine metric h, the difference tensor K and the affine shape operator S. Here, we consider 3-dimensional indefinite affine hyperspheres, i.e. S= H Id (and thus S is trivially preserved). First we solve an algebraic problem. We determine the non-trivial stabilizers G of a traceless cubic form on a Lorentz-Minkowski space R^3_1 under the action of the isometry group SO(1,2) and find a representative of each SO(1,2)/G-orbit. Since the affine c…
In this paper we describe all the nilradicals of parabolic subalgebras of split real simple Lie algebras admitting symplectic structures. The main tools used to obtain this list are Kostant's description of the highest weight vectors (hwv) of the cohomology of these nilradicals and some necessary conditions obtained for the $\mathfrak g$-hwv's of $H^2(\mathfrak n)$ for a finite dimensional real symplectic nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$ with a reductive Lie subalgebra of derivations $\mathfrak g$ acting on it.
Motivated by Gray's work on tube formulae for complex submanifolds of complex projective space equipped with the Fubini-Study metric, Riemannian foliations of projective space are studied. We prove that there are no complex Riemannian foliations of any open subset of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of codimension one. As a consequence there is no Riemannian foliation of the projective plane by Riemann surfaces, even locally. We determine how a complex submanifold may arise as an exceptional leaf of a non-trivial singular Riemannian foliation of maximal dimension. Gray's tube formula is applied to obtain a volu…
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called SKT (strong Kähler with torsion) if the Bismut torsion $3$-form $H$ is closed. As the conformal generalization of the SKT condition, we introduce a new type of Hermitian structure, called \emph{locally conformal SKT} (or shortly LCSKT). More precisely, a Hermitian structure $(J,g)$ is said to be LCSKT if there exists a closed non-zero $1$-form $α$ such that $d H = α\wedge H$. In the paper we consider non-trivial LCSKT structures, i.e. we assume that $d H \neq 0$ and we study their existence on Lie groups and their compact quotients by lattices…
We treat a non-normal Fefferman-type construction based on an inclusion $\SL(n+1)\embed\Spin(n+1,n+1)$. The construction associates a split signature $(n,n)$-conformal spin structure to a projective structure of dimension $n$. For $n\geq 3$ the induced conformal Cartan connection is shown to be normal if and only if it is flat. The main technical work of this article consists in showing that in the non-flat case the normalised conformal Cartan connection still allows a parallel (pure) spin-tractor and thus a corresponding (pure) twistor spinor on the conformal space. The Fefferman-type constru…
For two complex vector bundles admitting a homomorphism, whose singularity locates in the disjoint union of some odd--dimensional spheres, we give a formula to compute the relative Chern characteristic number of these two complex vector bundles. In particular, for a spin manifold admitting some sphere bundle structure, we give a formula to express the index of a special twisted Dirac operator.
We study Lie algebras admitting para-Kähler and hyper-para-Kähler structures. We give new characterizations of these Lie algebras and we develop many methods to build large classes of examples. Bai considered para-Kähler Lie algebras as left symmetric bialgebras. We reconsider this point of view and improve it in order to obtain some new results. The study of para-Kähler and hyper-para-Kähler is intimately linked to the study of left symmetric algebras and, in particular, those admitting invariant symplectic forms. In this paper, we give many new classes of left symmetric algebras and a comple…
In this paper, we investigate the Chern number inequalities on $4$-dimensional Kähler manifolds admitting the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics under the assumption $\hatθ\in (π,2π)$.
We prove that on a compact $n$-dimensional spin manifold admitting a non-trivial harmonic 1-form of constant length, every eigenvalue $λ$ of the Dirac operator satisfies the inequality $λ^2 \geq \frac{n-1}{4(n-2)}\inf_M Scal$. In the limiting case the universal cover of the manifold is isometric to $R\times N$ where $N$ is a manifold admitting Killing spinors.
A study is made of real Lie algebras admitting a hypersymplectic structure, and we provide a method to construct such hypersymplectic Lie algebras. We use this method in order to obtain the classification of all hypersymplectic structures on four-dimensional Lie algebras, and we describe the associated metrics on the corresponding Lie groups.
We characterize the three-dimensional spaces admitting at least six or at least seven equidistant points. In particular, we show the existence of $C^\infty$ norms on $\R^3$ admitting six equidistant points, which refutes a conjecture of Lawlor and Morgan (1994, Pacific J. Math \textbf{166}, 55--83), and gives the existence of energy-minimizing cones with six regions for certain uniformly convex norms on $\R^3$. On the other hand, no differentiable norm on $\R^3$ admits seven equidistant points. A crucial ingredient in the proof is a classification of all three-dimensional antipodal sets. We al…
A parallel lightlike vector field on a Lorentzian manifold $X$ naturally defines a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ of codimension one. If either all leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ are compact or $X$ itself is compact admitting a compact leaf and the (transverse) Ricci curvature is non-negative then a Bochner type argument implies that the first Betti number of $X$ is bounded by $1 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X$ if $X$ is compact and $0 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X -1$ otherwise. We show that these bounds are optimal and depending on the holonomy of $X$ we obtain further results. Finally, we classify the holonomy represen…
We characterize groups admitting Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(3,\mathbb R)$, projective Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$, and Borel Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$. More generally, we obtain bounds on the cohomological dimension of groups admitting $P_k$-Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$ and offer several characterizations of Benoist representations.
In the present paper, we introduce and investigate the notion of a semi concurrent vector field on a Finsler manifold. We show that some special Finsler manifolds admitting such vector fields turn out to be Riemannian. We prove that Tachibana's characterization of Finsler manifolds admitting a concurrent vector field leads to Riemannain metrics. We give an answer to the question raised in \cite{DWF}: "Is any n-dimensional Finsler manifold $(M,F)$, admitting a non-constant smooth function $f$ on $M$ such that $\frac{\partial f}{\partial x^i}\frac{\partial g^{ij}}{\partial y^k}=0$, a Riemannian …
In this paper, we give a complete topological, as well as geometrical classification of closed 3-dimensional Lorentz manifolds admitting a noncompact isometry group.
The existence of a recurrent spinor field on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold $(M,g)$ is closely related to the existence of a parallel 1-dimensional complex subbundle of the spinor bundle of $(M,g)$. We characterize the following simply connected pseudo-Riemannian manifolds admitting such subbundles in terms of their holonomy algebras: Riemannian manifolds; Lorentzian manifolds; pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with irreducible holonomy algebras; pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of neutral signature admitting two complementary parallel isotropic distributions.
If X is a full, finitely generated, projective module over a non-commutative torus, the Yang-Mills functional attains its minimum exactly on the flat connections on X. We classify the flat connections on modules admitting integrable connections.
