The main goal is to classify 4-dimensional real Lie algebras $\g$ which admit a para-hypercomplex structure. This is a step toward the classification of Lie groups admitting the corresponding left-invariant structure and therefore possessing a neutral, left-invariant, anti-self-dual metric. Our study is related to the work of Barberis who classified real, 4-dimensional simply-connected Lie groups which admit an invariant hypercomplex structure.
In this paper we study sectional curvature of invariant hyper-Hermitian metrics on simply connected 4-dimensional real Lie groups admitting invariant hypercomplex structure. We give the Levi-Civita connections and explicit formulas for computing sectional curvatures of these metrics and show that all these spaces have constant scalar curvature. We also show that they are flat or they have only non-negative or non-positive sectional curvature.
In the present paper we study Randers metics of Berwald type on simply connected 4-dimensional real Lie groups admitting invariant hypercomplex structure. On these spaces, the Randers metrics arising from invariant hyper-Hermitian metrics are considered. Then we give explicit formulas for computing flag curvature of these metrics. By this study we construct two 4-dimensional Berwald spaces, one of them has non-negative flag curvature and the other one has non-positive flag curvature.
Let (M,I) be a compact Kaehler manifold admitting a hypercomplex structure. We show that (M, I) admits a natural HKT-metric. This is used to construct a holomorphic symplectic form on (M,I).
Let (M,I,J,K) be a compact hypercomplex manifold admitting an HKT-metric. Assume that the canonical bundle of (M,I) is trivial as a holomorphic line bundle. We show that the holonomy of Obata connection on M is contained in SL(n,H). In Appendix we apply these arguments to compact nilmanifolds equipped with abelian hypercomplex structures, showing that such manifolds have holonomy in SL(n,H).
A study is made of real Lie algebras admitting compatible complex and product structures, including numerous 4-dimensional examples. If g is a Lie algebra with such a structure then its complexification has a hypercomplex structure. It is shown in addition that g splits into the sum of two left-symmetric subalgebras. Interpretations of these results are obtained that are relevant to the theory of both hypercomplex and hypersymplectic manifolds and their associated connections.
The object of investigations are almost hypercomplex structures with Hermitian-Norden metrics on 4-dimensional Lie groups considered as smooth manifolds. There are studied both the basic classes of a classification of 4-dimensional indecomposable real Lie algebras depending on two parameters. Some geometric characteristics of the respective almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian-Norden metrics are obtained.
Hypercomplex structures on Courant algebroids unify holomorphic symplectic structures and usual hypercomplex structures. In this note, we prove the equivalence of two characterizations of hypercomplex structures on Courant algebroids, one in terms of Nijenhuis concomitants and the other in terms of (almost) torsionfree connections for which each of the three complex structures is parallel.
In this paper, firstly we study some left invariant Riemannian metrics on para-hypercomplex 4-dimensional Lie groups. In each Lie group, the Levi-Civita connection and sectional curvature have been given explicitly. We also show these spaces have constant negative scalar curvatures. Then by using left invariant Riemannian metrics introduced in the first part, we construct some left invariant Randers metrics of Berwald type. The explicit formulas for computing flag curvature have been obtained in all cases. Some of these Finsler Lie groups are of non-positive flag curvature.
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metrics are considered. A linear connection $D$ is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D. Of special interest is the class of the locally conformally equivalent manifolds of the manifolds with covariantly constant almost complex structures and the case when the torsion of D is D-parallel. Curvature properties of these manifolds are studied. An example of 4-dimensional manifolds in the considered basic class is constructed and characterized.
Almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are considered. Isotropic hyper-Kähler manifolds are introduced. A 4-parametric family of 4-dimensional manifolds of this type is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically. The condition a 4-manifold to be isotropic hyper-Kähler is given.
We study complex product structures on nilpotent Lie algebras, establishing some of their main properties, and then we restrict ourselves to 6 dimensions, obtaining the classification of 6-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras admitting such structures. We prove that any complex structure which forms part of a complex product structure on a 6-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra must be nilpotent in the sense of Cordero-Fernández-Gray-Ugarte. A study is made of the torsion-free connection associated to the complex product structure and we consider also the associated hypercomplex structures on the 1…
A left invariant metric on a nilpotent Lie group is called minimal, if it minimizes the norm of the Ricci tensor among all left invariant metrics with the same scalar curvature. Such metrics are unique up to isometry and scaling and the groups admitting a minimal metric are precisely the nilradicals of (standard) Einstein solvmanifolds. If $N$ is endowed with an invariant symplectic, complex or hypercomplex structure, then minimal compatible metrics are also unique up to isometry and scaling. The aim of this paper is to give more evidence of the existence of minimal metrics, by presenting seve…
Let $F^{2n}=(M,M',F^{\ast})$ be an even-dimensional pseudo-Finsler manifold. We construct an almost hypercomplex structure on any chart domain of a certain atlas of $M'$ by using a considered non-linear connection. Then by using the almost hypercomplex structure we define two new families of Finsler connections. Also we show that for any Finsler connection $\nabla$ there exists a linear connection $D$ such that the local almost hypercomplex structure is parallel with respect to it.
Let $X$ be a compact quotient of the product of the real Heisenberg group $H_{4m+1}$ of dimension $4m+1$ and the 3-dimensional real Euclidean space $\bR^3$. A left invariant hypercomplex structure on $H_{4m+1}\times \bR^3$ descends onto the compact quotient $X$. The space $X$ is a hyperholomorphic fibration of 4-tori over a $4m$-torus. We calculate the parameter space and obstructions to deformations of this hypercomplex structure on $X$. Using our calculations we show that all small deformations generate invariant hypercomplex structures on $X$ but not all of them arise from deformations of t…
We introduce the notion of abelian almost contact structures on an odd dimensional real Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. This a sufficient condition for the structure to be normal. We investigate correspondences with even dimensional real Lie algebras endowed with an abelian complex structure, and with Kähler Lie algebras when $\mathfrak g$ carries a compatible inner product. The classification of 5-dimensional Sasakian Lie algebras with abelian structure is obtained. Later, we introduce and study abelian almost 3-contact structures on real Lie algebras of dimension $4n+3$. These are given by triple…
The subject of investigations are the almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian (Norden) metrics. A linear connection D is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D and its torsion is totally skew-symmetric. The class of the nearly Kaehler manifolds with respect to the first almost complex structure is of special interest. It is proved that D has a D-parallel torsion and is weak if it is not flat. Some curvature properties of these manifolds are studied.
The investigation of strings and M-theory involves the understanding of various BPS solitons which in a certain approximation can be thought of as solutions of ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity theories. These solitons have a brane or a intersecting brane interpretation, saturate a bound and are associated with parallel spinors with respect to a connection of the spin bundle of spacetime. A class of intersecting brane configurations is examined and it is shown that the geometry of spacetime is hyper-Kähler with torsion. A relation between these hyper-Kähler geometries with torsion and q…
We study the problem of existence of geometric structures on compact complex surfaces that are related to split quaternions. These structures, called para-hypercomplex, para-hyperhermitian and para-hyperkähler are analogs of the hypercomplex, hyperhermitian and hyperkähler structures in the definite case. We show that a compact oriented 4-manifold carries a para-hyperkähler structure iff it has a metric of split signature together with two parallel, orthogonal and null vector fields. Every compact complex surface admiting a para-hyperhermitian structure has vanishing first Chern class and we s…
We classify all seven-dimensional spaces which admit a homogeneous cosymplectic G2-structure. The motivation for this classification is that each of these spaces is a possible principal orbit of a parallel Spin(7)-manifold of cohomogeneity one.
In this note we discuss the problem of existence of para-hyperhermitian structures on compact complex surfaces. We construct examples of para-hypercomplex structures on Inoue surfaces of type $S^{-}$ which do not admit compatible metrics.
We present structural properties of Lie algebras admitting symmetric, invariant and nondegenerate bilinear forms. We show that these properties are not satisfied by nilradicals of parabolic subalgebras of real split forms of complex simple Lie algebras, neither by 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras associated with graphs, with only few exceptions. These rare cases are, essentially, abelian Lie algebras, the free 3-step nilpotent Lie algebra on 2-generators and the free 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra on 3-generators.
We show that given a conformal structure whose holonomy representation fixes a totally lightlike subspace of arbitrary dimension, there is always a local metric in the conformal class off a singular set which is Ricci-isotropic and gives rise to a parallel, totally lightlike distribution on the tangent bundle. This naturally applies to parallel spin tractors resp. twistor spinors on conformal spin manifolds and clarifies which twistor spinors are locally equivalent to parallel spinors. Moreover, we study the zero set of a twistor spinor using the curved orbit decomposition for parabolic geomet…
We study Lie algebras admitting para-Kähler and hyper-para-Kähler structures. We give new characterizations of these Lie algebras and we develop many methods to build large classes of examples. Bai considered para-Kähler Lie algebras as left symmetric bialgebras. We reconsider this point of view and improve it in order to obtain some new results. The study of para-Kähler and hyper-para-Kähler is intimately linked to the study of left symmetric algebras and, in particular, those admitting invariant symplectic forms. In this paper, we give many new classes of left symmetric algebras and a comple…
We treat a non-normal Fefferman-type construction based on an inclusion $\SL(n+1)\embed\Spin(n+1,n+1)$. The construction associates a split signature $(n,n)$-conformal spin structure to a projective structure of dimension $n$. For $n\geq 3$ the induced conformal Cartan connection is shown to be normal if and only if it is flat. The main technical work of this article consists in showing that in the non-flat case the normalised conformal Cartan connection still allows a parallel (pure) spin-tractor and thus a corresponding (pure) twistor spinor on the conformal space. The Fefferman-type constru…
In this paper we describe all the nilradicals of parabolic subalgebras of split real simple Lie algebras admitting symplectic structures. The main tools used to obtain this list are Kostant's description of the highest weight vectors (hwv) of the cohomology of these nilradicals and some necessary conditions obtained for the $\mathfrak g$-hwv's of $H^2(\mathfrak n)$ for a finite dimensional real symplectic nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$ with a reductive Lie subalgebra of derivations $\mathfrak g$ acting on it.
We give an overview of what is known on Lie groups admitting a left-invariant metric of negative Ricci curvature, including many natural questions and conjectures in the solvable case. We also introduce an open and convex cone C(n) of derivations attached to each nilpotent Lie algebra n, which is defined as the image of certain moment map and parametrizes a set of solvable Lie algebras with nilradical n admitting Ricci negative metrics.

We consider 3-webs, hyper-para-complex structures and integrable Segre structures on manifolds of even dimension and generalise the second heavenly Plebański equation in the context of higher-dimensional hyper-para-complex structures. We also characterise the Segre structures admitting a compatible hyper-para-complex structure in terms of systems of ordinary differential equations.
We investigate geometric invariants of the one parameter family of Mukai threefolds that admit $\mathbb C^{*}$ action. In particular we find the invariant divisors in the anticanonical system, and thus establish a bound on the log canonical thresholds. Furthermore we find an explicit description of such threefolds in terms of the quartic associated to the variety-of-sum-of-powers construction. This yields that any such threefold admits an additional symmetry which anticommutes with the $\mathbb C^{*}$ action, a fact that was previously observed near the Mukai-Umemura threefold by Rollin, Siman…
