We classify all seven-dimensional spaces which admit a homogeneous cosymplectic G2-structure. The motivation for this classification is that each of these spaces is a possible principal orbit of a parallel Spin(7)-manifold of cohomogeneity one.
We compute all the simply connected homogeneous and infinitesimally homogeneous surfaces admitting one or more invariant affine connections. We find exactly six non equivalent simply connected homogeneous surfaces admitting more than one invariant connections and four classes of simply connected homogeneous surfaces admitting exactly one invariant connection.
We show that a Lorentzian homogeneous space admitting a homogeneous structure of type T1 + T3 is either a (locally) symmetric space or a singular homogeneous plane wave.
In this paper, we use the technique of Finslerian submersion to deduce a flag curvature formula for homogeneous Finsler spaces. Based on this formula, we give a complete classification of even-dimensional smooth coset spaces $G/H$ admitting $G$-invariant Finsler metrics with positive flag curvature. It turns out that the classification list coincides with that of the even dimensional homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature obtained by N.R. Wallach. We also find out all the coset spaces admitting invariant non-Riemannian Finsler metrics with positive flag curvature.
We characterize cohomogeneity one manifolds and homogeneous spaces with a compact Lie group action admitting an invariant metric with positive scalar curvature.
By a recent result, it is known that compact homogeneous spaces with co-index of symmetry 4 are quotients of a semisimple Lie group of dimension at most 10. In this paper we determine exactly which ones of these spaces actually admit such a metric. For all the admissible spaces we construct explicit examples of these metrics.
An explicit classification of homogeneous quaternionic Kaehler structures by real tensors is derived and we relate this to the representation-theoretic description found by Fino. We then show how the quaternionic hyperbolic space HH(n) is characterised by admitting homogeneous structures of a particularly simple type. In the process we study the properties of different homogeneous models for HH(n).
We introduce a new notion of a homogeneous pair for a pseudo-Riemannian metric $g$ and a positive function $f$ on a manifold $M$ admitting a free $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-action. There are many examples admitting this structure. For example, (a) a class of pseudo-Hessian manifolds admitting a free $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-action and a homogeneous potential function such as the moduli space of torsion-free $G_2$-structures, (b) the space of Riemannian metrics on a compact manifold, and (c) many moduli spaces of geometric structures such as torsion-free ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structures admit this structure. Hence w…
In this paper, we use the flag curvature formula for homogeneous Finsler spaces in our previous work to classify odd dimensional smooth coset spaces admitting positively curved reversible homogeneous Finsler metrics. We will show that the most features of L. Bérard-Bergery's classification results for odd dimensional positively curved Riemannian homogeneous spaces can be generalized to reversible Finsler spaces.
We study the class $\mathcal{K}_{2}+\mathcal{K}_{4}$ of homogeneous pseudo-Kähler structures in the strongly degenerate case. The local form and the holonomy of a pseudo-Kähler manifold admitting such a structure is obtained, leading to a possible complex generalization of homogeneous plane waves. The same question is tackled in the case of pseudo-hyper-Kähler and pseudo-quaternion Kähler manifolds.
We show that noncompact homogeneous spaces not diffeomorphic to Euclidean space of dimension 9 or 10 admit no homogeneous Einstein metrics of negative Ricci curvature, with only three potential exceptions. The main ingredient in the proof is to show, via a cohomogeneity-one approach, that noncompact homogeneous spaces admitting an ideal isomorphic to $ \mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R}) $ admit no homogeneous Einstein metrics of negative Ricci curvature.
In spin geometry, traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds equipped with a homogeneous spin structure can be viewed as the simplest manifolds after Riemannian symmetric spin spaces. In this paper, we give some characterizations and properties of cyclic and traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds and we obtain the classification of simply-connected cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than or equal to four. We also present a wide list of examples of non-compact irreducible Riemannian $3$-symmetric spaces admitting cyclic metrics and give the expression of…
We classify Riemannian surfaces admitting associated families in three dimensional homogeneous spaces with four-dimensional isometry groups and in a wide family of (semi-Riemannian) warped products, with an extra natural condition (namely, rotating structure vector field). We prove that, provided the surface is not totally umbilical, such families exist in both cases if, and only if, the ambient manifold is a product and the surface is minimal. In particular, there exists no associated families of surfaces with rotating structure vector field in the Heisenberg group.
We analyze degenerate homogeneous structures of linear type in the pseudo-Kähler and para-Kähler cases. The local form and the holonomy of pseudo-Kähler or para-Kähler manifolds admitting such structure are obtained. In addition the associated homogeneous models are studied exhibiting their relation with the incompleteness of the metric. The same questions are tackled in the pseudo-quaternion Kähler and para-quaternion Kähler cases. These results complete the study of homogeneous structures of linear type in pseudo-Kähler, para-Kähler, pseudo-quaternion Kähler and para-quaternion Kähler cases.
In this paper, we study normal homogeneous Finsler spaces. We first define the notion of a normal homogeneous Finsler space, using the method of isometric submersion of Finsler metrics. Then we study the geometric properties. In particular, we establish a technique to reduce the classification of normal homogeneous Finsler spaces of positive flag curvature to an algebraic problem. The main result of this paper is a classification of positively curved normal homogeneous Finsler spaces. It turns out that a coset space $G/H$ admits a positively curved normal homogeneous Finsler metric if and only…
The main goal is to classify 4-dimensional real Lie algebras $\g$ which admit a para-hypercomplex structure. This is a step toward the classification of Lie groups admitting the corresponding left-invariant structure and therefore possessing a neutral, left-invariant, anti-self-dual metric. Our study is related to the work of Barberis who classified real, 4-dimensional simply-connected Lie groups which admit an invariant hypercomplex structure.
We generalize the notion of fixed point homogeneous isometric group actions to the context of singular Riemannian foliations. We find that in some cases, positively curved manifolds admitting these so-called point leaf maximal SRF's are diffeo/homeomorphic to compact rank one symmetric spaces. In all cases, manifolds admitting such foliations are cohomology CROSSes or finite quotients of them. Among non-simply connected manifolds, we find examples of such foliations which are non-homogeneous
We classify the 6-dimensional Lie algebras of the form $g\times g$ that admit integrable complex structure. We also endow a Lie algebra of the kind $o(n)\oplus o(n)$ with such a complex structure. The motivation comes from geometric structures á la Sasaki on $g$-manifolds.
This paper proves that there are no compact forms for a large class of homogeneous spaces admitting actions by higher-rank semisimple Lie groups. It builds on Zimmer's approach for studying such spaces using cocycle superrigidity. The proof involves cocycle superrigidity, measure rigidity for unipotent flows, techniques from partially hyperbolic dynamics, and the geometry and pseudo-Riemannian structure of the homogeneous space.
We treat a non-normal Fefferman-type construction based on an inclusion $\SL(n+1)\embed\Spin(n+1,n+1)$. The construction associates a split signature $(n,n)$-conformal spin structure to a projective structure of dimension $n$. For $n\geq 3$ the induced conformal Cartan connection is shown to be normal if and only if it is flat. The main technical work of this article consists in showing that in the non-flat case the normalised conformal Cartan connection still allows a parallel (pure) spin-tractor and thus a corresponding (pure) twistor spinor on the conformal space. The Fefferman-type constru…
In this note we classify all homogeneous spaces $G/H$ admitting a $G$-invariant $G_2$-structure, assuming that $G$ is a compact Lie group and $G$ acts effectively on $G/H$. They include a subclass of all homogeneous spaces $G/H$ with a $G$-invariant $\tilde G_2$-structure, where $G$ is a compact Lie group. There are many new examples with nontrivial fundamental group. We study a subclass of homogeneous spaces of high rigidity and low rigidity and show that they admit families of invariant coclosed $G_2$-structures (resp. $\tilde G_2$-structures).
We show that given a conformal structure whose holonomy representation fixes a totally lightlike subspace of arbitrary dimension, there is always a local metric in the conformal class off a singular set which is Ricci-isotropic and gives rise to a parallel, totally lightlike distribution on the tangent bundle. This naturally applies to parallel spin tractors resp. twistor spinors on conformal spin manifolds and clarifies which twistor spinors are locally equivalent to parallel spinors. Moreover, we study the zero set of a twistor spinor using the curved orbit decomposition for parabolic geomet…
We prove that any real Lie group of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat projective structure. We also prove that a real Lie group L of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat affine structure if and only if the Lie algebra of L is not perfect.
We prove that any compact complex homogeneous space with vanishing first Chern class after an appropriate deformation of the complex structure admits a homogeneous Calabi-Yau with torsion structure, provided that it also has an invariant volume form. A description of such spaces among the homogeneous C-spaces is given as well as many examples and a classification in the 3-dimensional case. We calculate the cohomology ring of some of the examples and show that in dimension 14 there are infinitely many simply-connected spaces with the same Hodge numbers and torsional Chern classes admitting such…
The equation determining whether a projective structure admits a connection in its given projective class that has skew-symmetric Ricci tensor is an overdetermined system of semi-linear partial differential equations which we call the projective Einstein-Weyl (pEW) equation. In 2-dimensions, we give local obstructions for projective surfaces to admit such a connection in its projective class. The obstructions are the resultants of polynomial equations that have to be satisfied for there to admit any pEW solution.
We find a necessary and sufficient condition for a compact 7-manifold to admit a $\tilde G_2$-structure. As a result we find a sufficient condition for an open 7-manifold to admit a closed 3-form of $\tilde G_2$-type.
In this paper we describe all the nilradicals of parabolic subalgebras of split real simple Lie algebras admitting symplectic structures. The main tools used to obtain this list are Kostant's description of the highest weight vectors (hwv) of the cohomology of these nilradicals and some necessary conditions obtained for the $\mathfrak g$-hwv's of $H^2(\mathfrak n)$ for a finite dimensional real symplectic nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$ with a reductive Lie subalgebra of derivations $\mathfrak g$ acting on it.
We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called SKT (strong Kähler with torsion) if the Bismut torsion $3$-form $H$ is closed. As the conformal generalization of the SKT condition, we introduce a new type of Hermitian structure, called \emph{locally conformal SKT} (or shortly LCSKT). More precisely, a Hermitian structure $(J,g)$ is said to be LCSKT if there exists a closed non-zero $1$-form $α$ such that $d H = α\wedge H$. In the paper we consider non-trivial LCSKT structures, i.e. we assume that $d H \neq 0$ and we study their existence on Lie groups and their compact quotients by lattices…
We study locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structures whose underlying Riemannian metric is Einstein, showing that in the compact case the scalar curvature cannot be positive. As a consequence, a compact homogeneous $7$-manifold cannot admit an invariant Einstein locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure unless the underlying metric is flat. In contrast to the compact case, we provide a non-compact example of homogeneous manifold endowed with a locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure whose associated Riemannian metric is Einstein and non Ricci-flat. The homogeneous Einstein metric is …
This is a short note on generalized $G_2$-structures obtained as a consequence of a $T$-dual construction given in a previous work of the authors together with Leonardo Soriani. Given classical $G_2$-structure on certain seven dimensional manifolds, either closed or co-closed, we obtain integrable generalized $G_2$-structures which are no longer an usual one, and with non-zero three form in general. In particular we obtain manifolds admitting closed generalized $G_2$-structures not admitting closed (usual) $G_2$-structures.
Solvable structures are exploited in order to find families of explicit solutions to evolution PDEs admitting suitable differential constraints. The effectiveness of the method is verified on several explicit examples.
For Einstein manifolds with negative scalar curvature admitting an isometric action of a Lie group G with compact, smooth orbit space, we show the following rigidity result: The nilradical N of G acts polarly, and the N-orbits can be extended to minimal Einstein submanifolds. As an application, we prove the Alekseevskii conjecture: Any homogeneous Einstein manifold with negative scalar curvature is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean space.
In this paper, we introduce the flag-wise positively curved condition for Finsler spaces (the (FP) Condition), which means that in each tangent plane, we can find a flag pole in this plane such that the corresponding flag has positive flag curvature. Applying the Killing navigation technique, we find a list of compact coset spaces admitting non-negatively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics satisfying the (FP) Condition. Using a crucial technique we developed previously, we prove that most of these coset spaces cannot be endowed with positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. We also prove …
We show that a germ of a real analytic Lorentz metric on ${\bf R}^3$ which is locally homogeneous on an open set containing the origin in its closure is necessarily locally homogeneous. We classifiy Lie algebras that can act quasihomogeneously---meaning they act transitively on an open set admitting the origin in its closure, but not at the origin---and isometrically for such a metric. In the case that the isotropy at the origin of a quasihomogeneous action is semisimple, we provide a complete set of normal forms of the metric and the action.
Problem of global integration of geometric structures arising in the theory of dynamical systems admitting the normal shift is considered. In the case when such integration is possible the problem of globalization for shift maps is studied.
In this expository paper we review some twistor techniques and recall the problem of finding compact differentiable manifolds that can carry both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures. Such examples were constructed independently by M. Atiyah, A. Blanchard and E. Calabi in the $1950$'s. In the $1980$'s V. Tsanov gave an example of a simply connected manifold that admits both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures - the twistor space of a $K3$ surface. Here we show that the quaternion twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold has the same property.
We present a new method for classifying naturally reductive homogeneous spaces -- i.\,e.~homogeneous Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection with skew torsion that has parallel torsion \emph{and} curvature. This method is based on a deeper understanding of the holonomy algebra of connections with parallel skew torsion on Riemannian manifolds and the interplay of such a connection with the geometric structure on the given Riemannian manifold. It allows to reproduce by easier arguments the known classifications in dimensions $3,4$, and $5$, and yields as a new result the classificatio…
