We prove that the gonality among the smooth curves in a complete linear system on a $K3$ surface is constant except for the Donagi-Morrison example. This was proved by Ciliberto and Pareschi under the additional condition that the linear system is ample.
As a consequence we prove that exceptional curves on $K3$ surfaces satisfy the Eisenbud-Lange-Martens-Schreyer conjecture and explicitly describe such curves. They turn out to be natural extensions of the Eisenbud-Lange-Martens-Schreyer examples of exceptional curves on $K3$ surfaces.
We introduce a higher-order version of the tangent map of a morphism and find a matrix representation. We then apply this matrix to solve a conjecture by T. Yasuda regarding the semigroup of the higher Nash blowup of formal curves. We first show that the conjecture is true for toric curves. We conclude by exhibiting a family of non-monomial curves where the conjecture fails.
Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$ be an unramified real curve with $X(\mathbb{R}) \neq \emptyset$. If $n \geq 3$ is odd, Huisman conjectures that $X$ is an $M$-curve and that every branch of $X(\mathbb{R})$ is a pseudo-line. If $n \geq 4$ is even, he conjectures that $X$ is a rational normal curve or a twisted form of a such. We disprove the first conjecture by giving a family of counterexamples. We remark that the second conjecture follows for generic curves of odd degree from the formula enumerating the number of complex inflection points.
In this note, we give an overview of a new technique for studying Brill--Noether curves in projective space via degeneration. In particular, we give a roadmap to the proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.
Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of genus-$g$ curves when $g$ is large enough. In this paper we prove the Oort conjecture for Shimura curves of Mumford type and Shimura curves parameterizing principally polarized $g$-dimensional abelian varieties isogenous to $g$-fold self-products of elliptic curves for $g>11$. We also prove that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g>7$. As a consequence, we obtain a finiteness result regarding smooth genus-$g$ curve…
Let $X/C$ be a general product of elliptic curves. Our goal is to establish the Hodge-D-conjecture for $X$. We accomplish this when $\dim X \leq 5$. For $\dim X \geq 6$, we reduce the conjecture to a matrix rank condition that is amenable to computer calculation.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective Fano variety over the complex numbers. We study the moduli spaces of rational curves on $X$ using the perspective of Manin's Conjecture. In particular, we bound the dimension and number of components of spaces of rational curves on $X$. We propose a Geometric Manin's Conjecture predicting the growth rate of a counting function associated to the irreducible components of these moduli spaces.
We prove that a Shimura curve in the Siegel modular variety is not generically contained in the open Torelli locus as long as the rank of unitary part in its canonical Higgs bundle satisfies a numerical upper bound. As an application we show that the Coleman-Oort conjecture holds for Shimura curves associated to partial corestriction upon a suitable choice of parameters, which generalizes a construction due to Mumford.
In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
Let $K$ be a number field and $O_K$ the ring of integers of $K$. In the spirit of Siegel's theorem on integral points on affine algebraic curves, the plane Jacobian conjecture over $K$ is equivalent to the following statement: if $P,Q\in O_K[x,y]$ and $P_xQ_y-P_yQ_x\equiv 1$, then the curve $P=0$ has more than one integral point.
It has been a long-standing problem to find an adequate definition of a Clifford index for higher rank vector bundles on curves, which should capture the complexity of the curve in its moduli space. An interesting proposal in rank 2 has been put forward by Mercat, who conjectured that the second Clifford index of a curve should be equal to its classical Clifford index, defined in terms of gonality. Using moduli of sheaves on generic K3 surfaces, we prove Mercat's conjecture for generic curves of every genus. Furthermore, for odd g we identify an effective divisor in the moduli space M_g along …
This article investigates the monodromy conjecture for a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family of curves with a plane branch as generic fiber. Roughly speaking, the monodromy conjecture states that every pole of the motivic, or related, Igusa zeta function induces an eigenvalue of monodromy. As the poles of the motivic zeta function associated with such a space monomial curve have been determined in earlier work, it remains to study the eigenvalues of monodromy. After reducing the problem to the curve seen as a Cartier divisor on a generic embedding s…
There are no known failures of Bounded Negativity in characteristic 0. In the light of recent work showing the Bounded Negativity Conjecture fails in positive characteristics for rational surfaces, we propose new characteristic free conjectures as a replacement. We also develop bounds on numerical characteristics of curves constraining their negativity. For example, we show that the $H$-constant of a rational curve $C$ with at most $9$ singular points satisfies $H(C)>-2$ regardless of the characteristic.
Eisenbud and Harris conjectured in 1982 that an algebraic curve of high genus lies on a surface of low degree (which they proved for curves of very large degree). They observed constraints on the Hilbert function of a general hyperplane section which imply that the hyperplane section lies on a curve of low degree. We investigate this situation under deformation. Given a set of sufficiently many points (as postulated by the conjecture) on a linearly normal curve, we show that if the number of conditions on quadrics remains constant, then for every deformation of the points the curve deforms alo…
Let be a general curve of genus g embedded via a general linear series of degree d in P^r. The well-known Maximal Rank Conjecture asserts that the restriction maps H^0(O_{P^r}(m)) \to H^0(O_C(m) are of maximal rank; if known, this conjecture would determine the Hilbert function of C. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for the hyperplane sections of unions general curves. More specifically, if H is a general hyperplane, we show that H^0(O_H(m)) \to H^0(O_{(C_1 \cup C_2 \cup \cdots \cup C_n) \cap H}(m)) is of maximal rank, except for some counterexamples when m = 2. As explained in a…
In 1982, Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity which is generic in its equisingularity class. In this article we prove the conjecture for the case of two Puiseux pairs and monodromy with distinct eigenvalues. The hypothesis on the monodromy implies that the $b$-exponents coincide with the opposite of the roots of the Bernstein polynomial, and we compute the roots of the Bernstein polynomial.
Let $U$ be an affine smooth curve defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. The Abhyankar Conjecture (proved by Raynaud and Harbater in 1994) describes the set of finite quotients of Grothendieck's étale fundamental group of $U$. In this paper, we consider a purely inseparable analogue of this problem, formulated in terms of Nori's profinite fundamental group scheme, and give a partial answer to it.
Green's canonical syzygy conjecture asserts a simple relationship between the Clifford index of a smooth projective curve and the shape of the minimal free resolution of its homogeneous ideal in the canonical embedding. We prove the analogue of this conjecture formulated by Bayer and Eisenbud for a class of non-reduced curves called ribbons. Our proof uses the results of Voisin and Hirschowitz-Ramanan on Green's conjecture for general smooth curves.
A conjecture of Mumford predicts a complete set of relations between the generators of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant on a smooth, projective curve of genus at least 2. The conjecture was proven by Kirwan. In this article, we generalize the conjecture to the case when the underlying curve is irreducible, nodal. In fact, we show that these relations (in the nodal curve case) arise naturally as degeneration of the Mumford relations shown by Kirwan in the smooth curve case. As a byproduct, we compute the Hodge-Poincare polyn…
We propose a conjecture on the generating series of Chern numbers of tautological bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on curves and establish the rank 1 and rank -1 case of this conjecture. Thus we compute explicitly the generating series of integrals of the Segre classes of tautological bundles of line bundles on curves, which has a similar structure as Lehn's conjecture for surfaces.
We survey three results on syzygies of curves beyond Green's conjecture, with a particular emphasis on drawing connections between the study of syzygies and other topics in moduli theory.
We prove the $p$-curvature conjecture for rank two vector bundles with connection on generic curves, by combining deformation techniques for families of varieties and topological arguments.
