In the holonomic approach to quantum computation information is encoded in a degenerate eigenspace of a parametric family of Hamiltonians and manipulated by the associated holonomic gates. These are realized in terms of the non-abelian Berry connection and are obtained by driving the control parameters along adiabatic loops. We show how it is possible, for a specific model, to explicitly determine the loops generating any desired logical gate, thus producing a universal set of unitary transformations. In a multi-partite system unitary transformations can be implemented efficiently by sequences of local holonomic gates. Moreover a conceptual scheme for obtaining the required Hamiltonian family, based on frequently repeated pulses, is discussed, together with a possible process whereby the initial state can be prepared and the final one can be measured.
In this paper, we study non-Abelian Berry's connections in the parameter space of boundary conditions for Dirac zero modes on quantum graphs. We apply the ADHM construction, which is the method for constructing Yang-Mills instanton solutions, to the Berry's connections. Then we find that the instanton configurations appear as the Berry's connections.
Motivated by the Nahm's construction, in this paper we present a systematic construction of Schrödinger Hamiltonians for a spin-1/2 particle where the Berry connection in the ground-state sector becomes the Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) monopole of $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Our construction enjoys a single arbitrary monotonic function, thereby creating infinitely many quantum-mechanical models that simulate the BPS monopole in the space of model parameters.
The geometry of the parameter space is encoded by the quantum geometric tensor, which captures fundamental information about quantum states and contains both the quantum metric tensor and the curvature of the Berry connection. We present a formulation of the Berry connection and the quantum geometric tensor in the framework of the phase space or Wigner function formalism. This formulation is obtained through the direct application of the Weyl correspondence to the geometric structure under consideration. In particular, we show that the quantum metric tensor can be computed using only the Wigne…
Recently, the notion of circuit complexity defined in symmetry group manifolds has been related to geometric actions which generally arise in the coadjoint orbit method in representation theory and play an important role in geometric quantization. On the other hand, it is known that there exists a precise relation between geometric actions and Berry phases defined in group representations. Motivated by these connections, we elaborate on a relation between circuit complexity and the group theoretic Berry phase. As the simplest setup relevant for holography, we discuss the case of two dimensiona…
The Berry connection plays a central role in our description of the geometric phase and topological phenomena. In condensed matter, it describes the parallel transport of Bloch states and acts as an effective "electromagnetic" vector potential defined in momentum space. Inspired by developments in mathematical physics, where higher-form (Kalb-Ramond) gauge fields were introduced, we hereby explore the existence of "tensor Berry connections" in quantum matter. Our approach consists in a general construction of effective gauge fields, which we ultimately relate to the components of Bloch states.…
Geometric phases, generated by cyclic evolutions of quantum systems, offer an inspiring playground for advancing fundamental physics and technologies, alike. Intriguingly, the exotic statistics of anyons realised in physical systems can be interpreted as a topological version of geometric phases. However, non-Abelian statistics has not yet been demonstrated in the laboratory. Here we employ an all optical quantum system that simulates the statistical evolution of Majorana fermions. As a result we experimentally realise non-Abelian Berry phases with the topological characteristic that they are …
The complete geometry of quantum states in parameter space is characterized by the quantum geometric tensor, which contains the quantum metric and Berry curvature as the real and imaginary parts, respectively. When the quantum states are degenerate, the quantum metric and Berry curvature take non-Abelian forms. The non-Abelian (Abelian) Berry curvature and Abelian quantum metric have been experimentally measured. However, an experimentally feasible scheme to extract all the components of the non-Abelian quantum metric tensor is still lacking. Here we propose a generic protocol to directly extr…
Quantum states can acquire a geometric phase called the Berry phase after adiabatically traversing a closed loop, which depends on the path not the rate of motion. The Berry phase is analogous to the Aharonov-Bohm phase derived from the electromagnetic vector potential, and can be expressed in terms of an Abelian gauge potential called the Berry connection. Wilczek and Zee extended this concept to include non-Abelian phases -- characterized by the gauge independent Wilson loop -- resulting from non-Abelian gauge potentials. Using an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, we quantum-engineered a non-…
Among non-Hermitian systems, pseudo-Hermitian phases represent a special class of physical models characterized by real energy spectra and by the absence of non-Hermitian skin effects. Here, we show that several pseudo-Hermitian phases in two and three dimensions can be built by employing $q$-deformed matrices, which are related to the representation of deformed algebras. Through this algebraic approach we present and study the pseudo-Hermitian version of well known Hermitian topological phases, raging from two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal-invariant topological insulators to …
Berry phases strongly affect the properties of crystalline materials, giving rise to modifications of the semiclassical equations of motion that govern wave-packet dynamics. In non-Hermitian systems, generalizations of the Berry connection have been analyzed to characterize the topology of these systems. While the topological classification of non-Hermitian systems is being developed, little attention has been paid to the impact of the new geometric phases on dynamics and transport. In this work, we derive the full set of semiclassical equations of motion for wave-packet dynamics in a system g…
We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the adiabatic evolution of degenerate open quantum systems, where the dynamics is induced by time-dependent fluctuating loop paths in control parameter space. For weak system-bath coupling, the fluctuations around a deterministic base path obey Gaussian statistics, where we assume that the quantum adiabatic theorem is also satisfied for fluctuating paths. We show that universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contributions are contained in the fluctuation-averaged evolution operator. This operator plays a key role in all experimental protoco…
Non-Abelian and non-adiabatic variants of Berry's geometric phase have been pivotal in the recent advances in fault tolerant quantum computation gates, while Berry's phase itself is at the heart of the study of topological phases of matter. The geometrical and topological properties of the phase space of spin$-1$ quantum states is richer than that of spin$-1/2$ quantum states and is relatively unexplored. For instance, the spin vector of a spin-1 system, unlike that of a spin$-1/2$ system, can lie anywhere on or inside the Bloch sphere representing the phase space. Recently, a generalization o…

Many quantum materials of interest, ex., bilayer graphene, possess a number of closely spaced but not fully degenerate bands near the Fermi level, where the coupling to the far detuned remote bands can induce Berry curvatures of the non-Abelian character in this active multiple-band manifold for transport effects. Under finite electric fields, non-adiabatic interband transition processes are expected to play significant roles in the associated Hall conduction. Here through an exemplified study on the valley Hall conduction in AB-stacked bilayer graphene, we show that the contribution arising f…
We investigate two kinds of topological structures (sphere and torus) spanned by the controlled parameters of a driven two-level system's Hamiltonian, and consider the connection between the structures and the system's dynamics. We discuss the Berry curvature obtained through the dynamical response method, show the certain physical and observable manifolds including the gapped region probed by integrating the Berry curvature, and demonstrate the system's state evolution can be tracked and manipulated by extracting the Berry curvature.
In condensed matter physics, non-Abelian statistics for Majorana zero modes (or Majorana Fermions) is very important, really exotic, and completely robust. The race for searching Majorana zero modes and verifying the corresponding non-Abelian statistics becomes an important frontier in condensed matter physics. In this letter, we generalize the Majorana zero modes to non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems that show universal but quite different properties from their Hermitian counterparts. Based on the NH Majorana zero modes, the orthogonal and nonlocal Majorana qubits are well defined. In par…
Using $su(N)$ Cartan subalgebra local bases parametrization of density operator $ρ$, we prove that the Wu-Yang potentials of a general $N$-level quantum system are completely expressed by $SU(N)$ gauge transformation. By taking the $SU(2)$ Cartan subalgebra local basis as a local normalized magnetization vector, we find that magnetic skyrmion and Wu-Yang magnetic monopole have the same algebraic structure. Moreover, by taking the adiabatic unitary evolution of magnetization as local gauge transformation, we verify that the Wu-Yang potential of magnetic skyrmions is proportional to the Berry co…
We introduce a quantum geometric tensor in a curved space with a parameter-dependent metric, which contains the quantum metric tensor as the symmetric part and the Berry curvature corresponding to the antisymmetric part. This parameter-dependent metric modifies the usual inner product, which induces modifications in the quantum metric tensor and Berry curvature by adding terms proportional to the derivatives with respect to the parameters of the determinant of the metric. The quantum metric tensor is obtained in two ways: By using the definition of the infinitesimal distance between two states…
We study the adiabatic dynamics of degenerate quantum states induced by loop paths in a control parameter space. The latter correspond to noisy trajectories if the system is weakly coupled to environmental modes. On top of conventional dynamic dephasing, we find a universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contribution and express it in terms of the non-Abelian Berry connection and curvature. We show that NAGD implies either decay or amplification of coherences as compared to the coherences when only dynamic dephasing is present. The full NAGD matrix structure can be probed through inter…
Fracton phase of matter host fractionalized topological quasiparticles with restricted mobility. A wide variety of fracton models with abelian excitations had been proposed and extensively studied while the candidates for non-Abelian fracton phases are less explored. In this work, we investigate the effect of twisted defect in abelian fracton models. The twisted defect is launched by introducing a branch cut line hosting anyon condensate. In particular, these twisted defects, which alter different types of quasiparticles, carry projective non-Abelian zero modes. En route, such defects can be e…
