The dynamics of observables which are matrices depending on \hbar and taking values in classical phase space is defined retaining the terms up to the first order in \hbar of the Moyal bracket. Within this semiclassical approach a first order lagrangian involving gauge fields is studied as a constrained hamiltonian system. This provides a systematic study of spin dynamics in the presence of non-abelian Berry gauge fields. We applied the method to various types of dynamical spin systems and clarified some persisting discussions. In particular employing the Berry gauge field which generates the Thomas precession, we calculated the force exerted on an electron in the external electric and magnetic fields. Moreover, a simple semiclassical formulation of the spin Hall effect is accomplished.

In topological semimetals and insulators, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and angle-dependent planar Hall effect have been reported arising from the Berry curvature. Using the Boltzmann transport theory, we present a closed-form expression for the nonequilibrium distribution function which includes both the effects of the Berry curvature and Lorentz force. Using this formulation, we obtain analytical expressions for conductivity and resistivity tensors in Weyl semimetals demonstrating a non-monotonic field dependence arising from the competition between the two effects.
Understanding the transport behavior of an electronic system under the influence of a magnetic field remains a key subject in condensed matter physics. Particularly in topological materials, their nonvanishing Berry curvature can lead to many interesting phenomena in magnetotransport owing to the coupling between the magnetic field and Berry curvature. By fully incorporating both the field-driven anisotropy and inherent anisotropy in the band dispersion, we study the semiclassical Boltzmann magnetotransport theory in topological materials with a nonvanishing Berry curvature. We show that as a …
Starting with general semiclassical equations of motion for electrons in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, we extend the Chambers formula to include in addition to a magnetic field, time-dependent electric fields and bands with Berry curvature. We thereby compute the conductivity tensor $σ_{αβ}(B,ω)$ in the presence of magnetic field for bands in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions with Berry curvature. We focus then on several applications to magnetotransport for metals with Fermi surface topological transitions in 2D. In particular, we consider a rectangular lattice and a model re…
Here, we introduce and apply non-Abelian tensor Berry connections to topological phases in multi-band systems. These gauge connections behave as non-Abelian antisymmetric tensor gauge fields in momentum space and naturally generalize Abelian tensor Berry connections and ordinary non-Abelian (vector) Berry connections. We build these novel gauge fields from momentum-space Higgs fields, which emerge from the degenerate band structure of degenerate-band models. Firstly, we show that the conventional topological invariants of two-dimensional topological insulators and three-dimensional Dirac semim…
We theoretically study the role of the Berry curvature on neutral and charged excitons in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides. The Berry curvature arises due to a strong coupling between the conduction and valence bands in these materials that can to great extent be described within the model of massive Dirac fermions. The Berry curvature lifts the degeneracy of exciton states with opposite angular momentum. Using an electronic interaction that accounts for non-local screening effects, we find a Berry-curvature induced splitting of $\sim 17$ meV between the 2$p_{-}$ and 2$p_{+}$ e…
Berry phases strongly affect the properties of crystalline materials, giving rise to modifications of the semiclassical equations of motion that govern wave-packet dynamics. In non-Hermitian systems, generalizations of the Berry connection have been analyzed to characterize the topology of these systems. While the topological classification of non-Hermitian systems is being developed, little attention has been paid to the impact of the new geometric phases on dynamics and transport. In this work, we derive the full set of semiclassical equations of motion for wave-packet dynamics in a system g…
We propose a general framework of nonlinear optics induced by non-Abelian Berry curvature in time-reversal-invariant (TRI) insulators. We find that the third-order response of a TRI insulator under optical and terahertz light fields is directly related to the integration of the non-Abelian Berry curvature over the Brillouin zone. We apply the result to insulators with rotational symmetry near the band edge. Under resonant excitations, the optical susceptibility is proportional to the flux of the Berry curvature through the iso-energy surface, which is equal to the Chern number of the surface t…
Kinetic theory of Dirac fermions is studied within the matrix valued differential forms method. It is based on the symplectic form derived by employing the semiclassical wave packet build of the positive energy solutions of the Dirac equation. A satisfactory definition of the distribution matrix elements imposes to work in the basis where the helicity is diagonal which is also needed to attain the massless limit. We show that the kinematic Thomas precession correction can be studied straightforwardly within this approach. It contributes on an equal footing with the Berry gauge fields. In fact …
Using a microscopic theory for the magnetoconductivity at low magnetic fields we show how the Hall and longitudinal conductivity can be calculated in the low scattering rate limit. In the lowest order of the scattering rate, we recover the result of the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. At higher order, we get corrections containing the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment. We use this formalism to study the linear longitudinal magnetoconductivity in tilted Weyl semimetals. We discuss how our result is related to the semiclassical Boltzmann approach and show the differences …
Band topology of anomalous quantum Hall insulators can be precisely addressed by computing Chern numbers of constituent non-degenerate bands that describe quantized, Abelian Berry flux through two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Can Chern numbers be defined for $SU(2)$ Berry connection of two-fold degenerate bands of materials preserving space-inversion ($\mathcal{P}$) and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetries or combined $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, without detailed knowledge of underlying basis? We affirmatively answer this question by employing a non-Abelian generalization of Stokes' theorem and…
We study nonlinear magneto-optical responses of metals by a semiclassical Boltzmann equation approach. We derive general formulas for linear and second order nonlinear optical effects in the presence of magnetic fields that include both Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment. Applied to Weyl fermions, the semiclassical approach (i) captures the directional anisotropy of linear conductivity under magnetic field as a consequence of an anisotropic $B^2$ contribution, which may explain the low-field regime of recent experiments; (ii) predicts strong second harmonic generation proportional to …
The complete geometry of quantum states in parameter space is characterized by the quantum geometric tensor, which contains the quantum metric and Berry curvature as the real and imaginary parts, respectively. When the quantum states are degenerate, the quantum metric and Berry curvature take non-Abelian forms. The non-Abelian (Abelian) Berry curvature and Abelian quantum metric have been experimentally measured. However, an experimentally feasible scheme to extract all the components of the non-Abelian quantum metric tensor is still lacking. Here we propose a generic protocol to directly extr…
In a magnetic field few-layer graphene supports, at the lowest Landau level, a multiplet of zero-mode levels nearly degenerate in orbitals as well as in spins and valleys. Those pseudo-zero-mode (PZM) levels are generally sensitive to interactions and external perturbations, and have a crossing among themselves or with other higher Landau levels when an external field is swept over a certain range. A close study is made of how such PZM levels evolve when they are gradually brought from empty to filled levels under many-body interactions. It is pointed out that the level spectra generally avoid…
We describe a method for measuring the Berry curvature from the wave-packet dynamics in perturbed arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides with honeycomb lattice structure. To disentangle the effects of the Berry curvature and the energy dispersion we utilize a difference measurement by propagating the wave packet under the influence of a constant external force back and forth. In this way a non-vanishing Berry curvature is obtained for photonic graphene with small sublattice bias or strain, where the relative error between the exact Berry curvature and the one derived from the semicl…
Weyl semimetals possess low energy excitations which act as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space. These emergent monopoles are at the heart of the extensive novel transport properties that Weyl semimetals exhibit. The singular nature of the Berry curvature around the nodal points in Weyl semimetals allows for the possibility of large anomalous transport coefficients in zero applied magnetic field. Recently a new class, termed type-II Weyl semimetals, has been demonstrated in a variety of materials, where the Weyl nodes are tilted. We present here a study of anomalous transport in thi…
Topology ultimately unveils the roots of the perfect quantization observed in complex systems. The 2D quantum Hall effect is the celebrated archetype. Remarkably, topology can manifest itself even in higher-dimensional spaces in which control parameters play the role of extra, synthetic dimensions. However, so far, a very limited number of implementations of higher-dimensional topological systems have been proposed, a notable example being the so-called 4D quantum Hall effect. Here we show that mesoscopic superconducting systems can implement higher-dimensional topology and represent a formida…
Among non-Hermitian systems, pseudo-Hermitian phases represent a special class of physical models characterized by real energy spectra and by the absence of non-Hermitian skin effects. Here, we show that several pseudo-Hermitian phases in two and three dimensions can be built by employing $q$-deformed matrices, which are related to the representation of deformed algebras. Through this algebraic approach we present and study the pseudo-Hermitian version of well known Hermitian topological phases, raging from two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal-invariant topological insulators to …
We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the adiabatic evolution of degenerate open quantum systems, where the dynamics is induced by time-dependent fluctuating loop paths in control parameter space. For weak system-bath coupling, the fluctuations around a deterministic base path obey Gaussian statistics, where we assume that the quantum adiabatic theorem is also satisfied for fluctuating paths. We show that universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contributions are contained in the fluctuation-averaged evolution operator. This operator plays a key role in all experimental protoco…
Periodicity of long wavelength moiré patterns is very often destroyed by the inhomogeneous strain introduced in fabrications of van der Waals layered structures. We present a framework to describe massive Dirac fermions in such distorted moiré pattern of transition metal dichalcogenides homobilayers, accounting for the dynamics of layer pseudospin. In decoupled bilayers, we show two causes of in-plane layer pseudospin precession: By the coupling of layer antisymmetric strain to valley magnetic moment; and by the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the SU(2) gauge potential for the case of R-type bilayer u…
Non-Hermitian materials can not only exhibit exotic energy band structures but also an anomalous velocity induced by non-Hermitian anomalous Berry connection as predicted by the semiclassical equations of motion for Bloch electrons. However, it is not clear how the modified semiclassical dynamics modifies transport phenomena. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the emergence of anomalous oscillations driven by either an external dc or ac electric field, which arise from non-Hermitian anomalous Berry connection. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that geometric structures of electric wave functio…
Many quantum materials of interest, ex., bilayer graphene, possess a number of closely spaced but not fully degenerate bands near the Fermi level, where the coupling to the far detuned remote bands can induce Berry curvatures of the non-Abelian character in this active multiple-band manifold for transport effects. Under finite electric fields, non-adiabatic interband transition processes are expected to play significant roles in the associated Hall conduction. Here through an exemplified study on the valley Hall conduction in AB-stacked bilayer graphene, we show that the contribution arising f…
We construct a theory for the semiclassical dynamics of superconducting quasiparticles by following their wave-packet motion and reveal rich contents of Berry curvature effects in the phase-space spanned by position and momentum. These Berry curvatures are traced back to the characteristics of superconductivity, including the nontrivial momentum-space geometry of superconducting pairing, the real-space supercurrent, and the charge dipole of quasiparticles. The Berry-curvature effects strongly influence the spectroscopic and transport properties of superconductors, such as the local density of …
Bloch oscillations (BOs) are a fundamental phenomenon by which a wave packet undergoes a periodic motion in a lattice when subjected to an external force. Observed in a wide range of synthetic lattice systems, BOs are intrinsically related to the geometric and topological properties of the underlying band structure. This has established BOs as a prominent tool for the detection of Berry phase effects, including those described by non-Abelian gauge fields. In this work, we unveil a unique topological effect that manifests in the BOs of higher-order topological insulators through the interplay o…
The weak field magnetoresistance has seen a revived interest due to the distinct role played by the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons. While most previous studies in this regard focus on the inter-scattering motion of semiclassical Bloch electrons in electromagnetic fields, the intra-scattering effects of the semiclassical dynamics augmented by the Berry curvature, magnetic moment and shift vector on the magnetoresistance have been largely overlooked. Here we uncover that these intra-scattering effects, which are neglected in the field-independent relaxation time approximation …
In condensed matter physics, non-Abelian statistics for Majorana zero modes (or Majorana Fermions) is very important, really exotic, and completely robust. The race for searching Majorana zero modes and verifying the corresponding non-Abelian statistics becomes an important frontier in condensed matter physics. In this letter, we generalize the Majorana zero modes to non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems that show universal but quite different properties from their Hermitian counterparts. Based on the NH Majorana zero modes, the orthogonal and nonlocal Majorana qubits are well defined. In par…
The motion of electron wave packets in the Dirac semimetals A$_3$Bi (A=Na,K,Rb) is studied in a semiclassical approximation. Because of the two-fold degeneracy of the Dirac points and a momentum-dependent gap term in the low-energy Hamiltonian, the associated Berry curvature is non-Abelian. In the presence of background electromagnetic fields, such a Berry curvature leads to a splitting of trajectories for the wave packets that originate from different Dirac points and chiral sectors. The nature of the splitting strongly depends on the background fields as well as the initial chiral compositio…
By quantizing the semiclassical motion of excitons, we show that the Berry curvature can cause an energy splitting between exciton states with opposite angular momentum. This splitting is determined by the Berry curvature flux through the $\bm k$-space area spanned by the relative motion of the electron-hole pair in the exciton wave function. Using the gapped two-dimensional Dirac equation as a model, we show that this splitting can be understood as an effective spin-orbit coupling effect. In addition, there is also an energy shift caused by other "relativistic" terms. Our result reveals the l…
An extension of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem to one employing dynamical parameters that vary with time according to quantum dynamics is rigorously derived, avoiding any linear response or other approximations. The resulting theorem for the dynamics of observables, valid to all orders in external fields, is found to contain generalized Berry curvature type of quantities that incorporate the dynamics through explicit and nontrivial time-dependence; these Berry quantities resemble the so called anomalous terms (in semiclassical equations of motion in solids) but are both of magnetic and electric …
In terms of the matrix valued Berry gauge field strength for the Weyl Hamiltonian in any even spacetime dimensions a symplectic form whose elements are matrices in spin indices is introduced. Definition of the volume form is modified appropriately. A simple method of finding the path integral measure and the chiral current in the presence of external electromagnetic fields is presented. It is shown that within this new approach the chiral magnetic effect as well as the chiral anomaly in even d+1 dimensions are accomplished straightforwardly.
