We propose a new formula for the adiabatic Berry phase which is based on phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics. This approach sheds a new light into the correspondence between classical and quantum adiabatic phases -- both phases are related with the averaging procedure: Hannay's angle with averaging over the classical torus and Berry's phase with averaging over the entire classical phase space with respect to the corresponding Wigner function. Generalizations to the non-abelian Wilczek--Zee case and mixed states are also included.
Berry's phase, entry in the Compendium of Quantum Physics: Concepts, Experiments, History and Philosophy, ed. F. Weinert, K. Hentschel, D. Greenberger and B. Falkenburg (Springer), to appear
Berry phase is a very general concept. It is applied here to families of solutions of the Dirac equation with different values of spin. The value of the Berry phase in the spin space is given by the same expression as was found before in the momentum space.
In this paper, it is pointed out that the Berry's phase is a good index of degree of no-commutativity of the quantum statistical model. Intrinsic relations between the `complex structure' of the Hilbert space and Berry's phase is also discussed.
We calculate the Berry phase of a spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field considering the quantum nature of the field. The phase reduces to the standard Berry phase in the semiclassical limit and eigenstate of the particle acquires a phase in the vacuum. We also show how to generate a vacuum induced Berry phase considering two quantized modes of the field which has a interesting physical interpretation.
Berry phase of simple harmonic oscillator is considered in a general representation. It is shown that, Berry phase which depends on the choice of representation can be defined under evolution of the half of period of the classical motions, as well as under evolution of the period. The Berry phases do {\em not} depend on the mass or angular frequency of the oscillator. The driven harmonic oscillator is also considered, and the Berry phase is given in terms of Fourier coefficients of the external force and parameters which determine the representation.
We propose a method for analyzing Berry phase for a multi-qubit system of superconducting charge qubits interacting with a microwave field. By suitably choosing the system parameters and precisely controlling the dynamics, novel connection found between the Berry phase and entanglement creations.
By studying the topological invariance andBerry phase in non-Hermitian systems, we reveal the basic properties of the complex Berry phase and generalize the global Berry phases Q to identify the topological invariance for non-Hermitian systems. We find thatQcan identify topological invariance in two kinds of non-Hermitian model, the two-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and the bipartite dissipative model. For the bipartite dissipative model, an abrupt change of the Berry phase in the parameter space reveals a quantum phase transition and is related to the exceptional points. These results give t…
Entanglement and Berry phase are investigated in two interacting qubit systems. The XXZ spin interaction model with a slowly rotating magnetic field is employed for the interaction between the two qubits. We show how the anisotropy of interaction reveals unique relations between the Berry phases and the entanglements for the eigenstates of the system.
The relation between level crossings, entanglement, and Berry phases is investigated for the Breit-Rabi Hamiltonian of hydrogen and sodium atoms, describing a hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins in a magnetic field. It is shown that the entanglement between nuclear and electron spins is maximum at avoided crossings. An entangled state encircling avoided crossings acquires a marginal Berry phase of a subsystem like an instantaneous eigenstate moving around real crossings accumulates a Berry phase. Especially, the nodal points of a marginal Berry phase correspond to the avoided c…
The Berry phases for coherent states and squeezed coherent states of Landau levels are calculated. Coherent states of Landau levels are interpreted as a result of a magnetic flux moved adiabatically from infinity to a finite place on the plane. The Abelian Berry phase for coherent states of Landau levels is an analog of the Aharonov- Bohm effect. Moreover, the non-Abelian Berry phase is calculated for the adiabatic evolution of the magnetic field B.
The Lie group adiabatic evolution determined by a Lie algebra parameter dependent Hamiltonian is considered. It is demonstrated that in the case when the parameter space of the Hamiltonian is a homogeneous Kähler manifold its fundamental Kähler potentials completely determine Berry geometrical phase factor. Explicit expressions for Berry vector potentials (Berry connections) and Berry curvatures are obtained using the complex parametrization of the Hamiltonian parameter space. A general approach is exemplified by the Lie algebra Hamiltonians corresponding to SU(2) and SU(3) evolution groups.
Theoretical and experimental studies of Berry and Pancharatnam phases are reviewed. Basic elements of differential geometry are presented for understanding the topological nature of these phases. The basic theory analyzed by Berry in relation to magnetic monopoles is presented. The theory is generalized to nonadiabatic processes and to noncyclic Pancharatnam phases. Different systems are discussed including polarization optics, n-level atomic systems, neutron interferometry and molecular topological phases.
The Berry phase in a composite system with only one subsystem being driven has been studied in this Letter. We choose two spin-$\frac 1 2 $ systems with spin-spin couplings as the composite system, one of the subsystems is driven by a time-dependent magnetic field. We show how the Berry phases depend on the coupling between the two subsystems, and what is the relation between these Berry phases of the whole system and those of the subsystems.
We investigate the decoherence effect of a bosonic bath on the Berry phase of a spin-1/2 in a time-dependent magnetic field, without making the Markovian approximation. A two-cycle process resulting in a pure Berry phase is considered. The low-frequency quantum noise significantly affects the Berry phase. In the adiabatic limit, the high-frequency quantum noise only has a small effect. The result is also valid in some more general situations.
A quantized fermion can be represented by a scalar particle encircling a magnetic flux line. It has the spinor structure which can be constructed from quantum gates and qubits. We have studied here the role of Berry phase in removing dynamical phase during one qubit rotation of a quantized fermion. The entanglement of two qubit inserting spin-echo to one of them results the change of Berry phase that can be considered as a measure of entanglement. Some effort is given to study the effect of noise on the Berry phase of spinor and their entangled states.
We show in this comment that the results obtained in a recent work by Yi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150406 (2004)] are quantitatively not correct and the proposed subsystem Berry phase is not well-defined.
The well-known geometric phase present in the quantum adiabatic evolution discovered by Berry many years ago has its analogue, the Hannay phase, in the classical domain. We calculate the Berry phase with examples for quantum hermitian and non-hermitian $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and compare with the Hannay phase in their classical equivalents. We use the analogy to propose resonant electric circuits which reproduce the theoretical solutions in simulated laboratory experiments.
Spin interaction Hamiltonians are obtained from the unitary Yang--Baxter $\breve{R}$-matrix. Based on which, we study Berry phase and quantum criticality in the Yang--Baxter systems.
The paper aims to spell out the relevance of the Berry phase in view of the question what the minimal mathematical structure is that accounts for all observable quantum phenomena. The question is both of conceptual and of ontological interest. While common wisdom tells us that the quantum structure is represented by the structure of the projective Hilbert space, the appropriate structure rich enough to account for the Berry phase is the U(1) bundle over that projective space. The Berry phase is ultimately rooted in the curvature of this quantum bundle, it cannot be traced back to the Hamiltoni…
With a counter-diabatic field supplemented to the reference control field, the `shortcut to adiabaticiy' (STA) protocol is implemented in a superconducting phase qubit. The Berry phase measured in a short time scale is in good agreement with the theoretical result acquired from an adiabatic loop. The trajectory of a qubit vector is extracted, verifying the Berry phase alternatively by the integrated solid angle. The classical noise is introduced to the amplitude or phase of the total control field. In the statistics of the Berry phase, the mean with either noise is almost equal to that without…
We discuss the thermodynamic and finite size scaling properties of the geometric phase in the adiabatic Dicke model, describing the super-radiant phase transition for an $N$ qubit register coupled to a slow oscillator mode. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, a non zero Berry phase is obtained only if a path in parameter space is followed that encircles the critical point. Furthermore, we investigate the precursors of this critical behavior for a system with finite size and obtain the leading order in the 1/N expansion of the Berry phase and its critical exponent.
Motivated by the work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 220404 (2002)] for detecting the vacuum-induced Berry phases with two-mode Jaynes-Cummings models (JCMs), we show here that, for a parameter-dependent single-mode JCM, certain atom-field states also acquire the photon-number-dependent Berry phases after the parameter slowly changed and eventually returned to its initial value. This geometric effect related to the field quantization still exists, even the filed is kept in its vacuum state. Specifically, a feasible Ramsey interference experiment with cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system is desig…
The energy eigenstates of a spin$-\frac{1}{2}$ particle in a magnetic field confined to a plane, define a planar spin. If the particle moves adiabatically around a loop in this plane, it picks up a topological Berry phase that can only be an integer multiple of $π$. We propose a neutron interferometry test of the Berry phase for a circulating planar spin induced by a magnetic field caused by a very long current-carrying straight wire perpendicular to the plane. This Berry phase causes destructive interference in the direction of the incoming beam of thermal neutrons moving through a triple-Lau…
The quantum vacuum contribution to Berry's geometric phase of photon fields inside a noncoplanarly curved (coiled) fiber is considered by means of the second-quantization formulation. It is shown that the quantum vacuum Berry's phases of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light have the equal magnitudes but opposite signs, and are therefore eliminated entirely by each other. In order to realize such a novel vacuum effect, a scheme to separate the quantum vacuum Berry's phase of one polarized light from another by using the chiral medium fiber is suggested. We think the present study m…
A theoretical analysis of Pancharatnam and Berry phases is made for biphoton three-level systems, which are produced via frequency degenerate co-linear spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). The general theory of Pancharatnam phases is discussed with a special emphasis on geodesic 'curves'in Hilbert space. Explicit expressions for Pancharatnam, dynamical and geometrical phases are derived for the transformations produced by linear phase-converters. The problem of gauge invariance is treated along all the article.
In this paper, a (3\times3)-matrix representation of the Birman-Wenzl-Murakami(BWM) algebra has been presented. Based on which, unitary matrices (A(θ,ϕ_1,ϕ_2), B(θ,ϕ_1,ϕ_2)) are generated via the Yang-Baxterization approach. A hamiltonian is constructed from the unitary (B(θ,ϕ)) matrix. We then study the Berry phase of the Yang-Baxter system and find the topological parameter d has relationship with berry phase.
In this reply, we show that the adiabatic theorem would break down in the weak coupling limit, and the definition for the subsystem geometric phase is well defined.
Berry phase, which had been discovered for more than two decades, provides us a very deep insight on the geometric structure of quantum mechanics. Its classical counterpart--Hannay's angle is defined if closed curves of action variables return to the same curves in phase space after a time evolution. In this paper, we study the Berry phase and Hannay's angle in a quantum-classical hybrid system under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. By quantum-classical hybrid system, we denote a composite system consists of a quantum subsystem and a classical subsystem. The effects of subsystem-subsystem c…
We have studied the entanglement of identical fermions in two spatial regions in terms of the Berry phase acquired by their spins. The analysis is done from the viewpoint of the geometrical interpretation of entanglement, where a fermion is visualized as a scalar particle attached with a magnetic flux quantum. The quantification of spin entanglement in terms of their Berry phases is novel and generalises the relationship between the entanglement of distinguishable spins and that of delocalised fermions.
We have studied here the influence of the Berry phase generated due to a cyclic evolution of an entangled state of two spin 1/2 particles. It is shown that the measure of formation of entanglement is related to the cyclic geometric phase of the individual spins. \\
We show that quantum interference can be classically interpreted in terms of a phase invariant quantity, not unlike the Berry's phase. Under this interpretation, closed loops in time become fundamental quantum entities, and all quantum states become periodic. Decoherence is then seen to occur naturally as a consequence. This formalism, although counterintuitive, provides a useful way of assigning ``classical'' meaning to quantum probabilities.
We obtain the adiabatic Berry phase by defining a generalised gauge potential whose line integral gives the phase holonomy for arbitrary evolutions of parameters. Keeping in mind that for classical integrable systems it is hardly clear how to obtain open-path Hannay angle, we establish a connection between the open-path Berry phase and Hannay angle by using the parametrised coherent state approach. Using the semiclassical wavefunction we analyse the open-path Berry phase and obtain the open-path Hannay angle. Further, by expressing the adiabatic Berry phase in terms of the commutator of instan…
For a time-dependent $τ$-periodic harmonic oscillator of two linearly independent homogeneous solutions of classical equation of motion which are bounded all over the time (stable), it is shown, there is a representation of states cyclic up to multiplicative constants under $τ$-evolution or $2τ$-evolution depending on the model. The set of the wave functions is complete. Berry's phase which could depend on the choice of representation can be defined under the $τ$- or $2τ$-evolution in this representation. If a homogeneous solution diverges as the time goes to infinity, it is shown that, Berry'…
For a given $k$-dimensional subspace $V_0$ in a Hilbert space $\hilb$ and a unitary transformation $g_0:V_0\To V_0$, we find a path in the Grassmann manifold the monodromy of which coincides with $g_0$.
In a nondegenerate syste, the abelian Berry's phase will never cause transitions among the Hamiltonian's eigenstate. However, in a degenerate syatem, it is well known that the state transition can be caused by the non-abelian Berry phase. Actually, in a such a system, the phase factor is not always nonabelian. Even in the case that the phase is a nondiagonal matrix, it still can be an abelian phase and can cause the state transitions. We then propose a simple scheme to detect such an effect of the Berry phase to the degenerate states by using the optical entangled pair state. In this scheme, w…
In this paper we develop a general method to obtain the Berry phase of time-dependent Hamiltonians with a linear structure given in terms of the $SU(1,1)$ and $SU(2)$ groups. This method is based on the similarity transformations of the displacement operator performed to the generators of each group, and let us diagonalize these Hamiltonians. Then, we introduce a trilinear form of the Tavis-Cummings model to compute the $SU(1,1)$ and $SU(2)$ Berry phases of this model.
Berry phases and quantum fidelities for interacting spins have attracted considerable attention, in particular in relation to entanglement properties of spin systems and quantum phase transitions. These efforts mainly focus either on spin pairs or the thermodynamic infinite spin limit, while studies of the multipartite case of a finite number of spins are rare. Here, we analyze Berry phases and quantum fidelities of the energetic ground state of a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model consisting of three spin-1/2 particles (qubits). We find explicit expressions for the Berry phase and fidelity susc…
We propose a scheme for measuring the Berry phase in the vibrational degree of freedom of a trapped ion. Starting from the ion in a vibrational coherent state we show how to reverse the sign of the coherent state amplitude by using a purely geometric phase. This can then be detected through the internal degrees of freedom of the ion. Our method can be applied to preparation of Schrödinger cat states.
The effect of inter-subsystem couplings on the Berry phase of a composite system as well as that of its subsystem is investigated in this paper. We analyze two coupled spin-$\frac 1 2 $ particles with one driven by a quantized field as an example, the pure state geometric phase of the composite system as well as the mixed state geometric phase for the subsystem is calculated and discussed.
It is pointed out that the solutions of the Klein-Gordon and the Dirac equation derived in the paper addressed in this Comment (and many more solutions) may be obtained from generating functions.
We study the connection between Berry phases and quantum phase transitions of generic quantum many-body systems. Consider sequences of Berry phases associated to sequences of loops in the parameter space whose limit is a point. If the sequence of Berry phases does not converge to zero, then the limit point is a quantum critical point. Quantum critical points are associated to failures of adiabaticity. We discuss the remarkable example of the anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse magnetic field and detect the XX region of criticality.
In this paper we define a non-dynamical phase for a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field in the non-adiabatic non-cyclic case, and this phase can be considered as a generalized Berry phase. We show that this phase reduces to the geometric Berry phase, in the adiabatic limit, up to a factor independent of the parameters of the system. We could add an arbitrary phase to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian due to the gauge freedom. Then, we fix this arbitrary phase by comparing our Berry phase in the adiabatic limit with the Berry's result for the same system. Also, in the extreme non-ad…
We report on the observation of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase in a condensate of indirect excitons (IXs) in a GaAs coupled quantum well structure. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase leads to phase shifts of interference fringes in IX interference patterns. Correlations are found between the phase shifts, polarization pattern of IX emission, and onset of IX spontaneous coherence. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase is acquired due to coherent spin precession in IX condensate. The effect of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase on the IX phase pattern is described in terms of an associated momentum.
In our previous work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{85}, 044102 (2012)], we have studied the Berry phase of the ground state and exited states in the Lipkin model. In this paper, using Hellmann-Feynman theorem, we derive the relation between the energy gap and the Berry phase close to the excited state quantum phase transition (ESQPT) in the Lipkin model. We find that the energy gap is linearly dependent upon the Berry phase close to the ESQPT. As a result, the critical behavior of the energy gap is similar to that of the Berry phase. In addition, we also perform a semiclassical qualitative analysis ab…
Berry phases mix states of positive and negative energy in the propagation of fermions and bosons in external gravitational and electromagnetic fields and generate Zitterbewegung oscillations. The results are valid in any reference frame and to any order of approximation in the metric deviation.
We show that the geometric phase of the gyro-motion of a classical charged particle in a uniform time-dependent magnetic field described by Newton's equation can be derived from a coherent Berry phase for the coherent states of the Schroedinger equation or the Dirac equation. This correspondence is established by constructing coherent states for a particle using the energy eigenstates on the Landau levels and proving that the coherent states can maintain their status of coherent states during the slow varying of the magnetic field. It is discovered that orbital Berry phases of the eigenstates …
The properties that quantify photonic topological insulators (PTIs), Berry phase, Berry connection, and Chern number, are typically obtained by making analogies between classical Maxwell's equations and the quantum mechanical Schrödinger equation, writing both in Hamiltonian form. However, the aforementioned quantities are not necessarily quantum in nature, and for photonic systems they can be explained using only classical concepts. Here we provide a derivation and description of PTI quantities using classical Maxwell's equations, we demonstrate how an electromagnetic mode can acquire Berry p…
In this letter, we elaborate on the identification and construction of the differential geometric elements underlying Berry's phase. Berry bundles are built generally from the physical data of the quantum system under study. We apply this construction to typical and recently investigated systems presenting Berry's phase to explore their geometric features.
We examine the dynamical consequences of Berry's phase for Josephson junctions, junction arrays, and their vortices. Josephson's equation and the related phase slip voltages are shown to be uneffected by Berry's phase. In an annular Josephson junction, Berry's phase is seen to generate a new current drive on a vortex. In the continuum limit, vortex dynamics in a 2D array is shown to map onto that of a 2D film. A Hall sign anomaly is expected in arrays; and the merits of arrays for studies of disorder on vortex motion is discussed.
We outline a path integral derivation of both the transverse force, the Berry phase, and friction for a vortex from the microscopic fermionic superfluid theory. The derivation manifests transparently the mutual independence of the Berry phase and dissipative terms in the effective vortex action.
A matrix Berry phase can be generated and detected by {\it all electric means} in II-VI or III-V n-type semiconductor quantum dots by changing the shape of the confinement potential. This follows from general symmetry considerations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling terms. The resulting 2 x 2 matrix Berry phase can be characterized by two numbers of geometric origin. We investigate how these parameters depend on the shape and area of closed adiabatic paths. We suggest how the matrix Berry phase may be detected in transport measurements.
We have investigated pumping in quantum dots from the perspective of non-Abelian (matrix) Berry phases by solving the time dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation exactly for adiabatic changes. Our results demonstrate that a pumped charge is related to the presence of a finite matrix Berry phase. When consecutive adiabatic cycles are performed the pumped charge of each cycle is different from the previous ones.
The effect of fluctuations in the classical control parameters on the Berry phase of a spin 1/2 interacting with a adiabatically cyclically varying magnetic field is analyzed. It is explicitly shown that in the adiabatic limit dephasing is due to fluctuations of the dynamical phase.
In this work, we propose a new design of an ion trap which can enable us to generate state specific Berry phase in a single trapped ion. Such a design will enable us to study the physics at the boundary of abelian and non-abelian symmetries and can also have significant impact in quantum computation.
We investigate the effect of the environment on a Berry phase measurement involving a spin-half. We model the spin+environment using a biased spin-boson Hamiltonian with a time-dependent magnetic field. We find that, contrary to naive expectations, the Berry phase acquired by the spin can be observed, but only on timescales which are neither too short nor very long. However this Berry phase is not the same as for the isolated spin-half. It does not have a simple geometric interpretation in terms of the adiabatic evolution of either bare spin-states or the dressed spin-resonances that remain on…
The influence of the geometric phase, in particular the Berry phase, on an entangled spin-1/2 system is studied. We discuss in detail the case, where the geometric phase is generated only by one part of the Hilbert space. We are able to cancel the effects of the dynamical phase by using the ``spin-echo'' method. We analyze how the Berry phase affects the Bell angles and the maximal violation of a Bell inequality. Furthermore we suggest an experimental realization of our setup within neutron interferometry.
We revisit earlier studies on Berry phases suggested to appear in certain cavity QED settings. It has been especially argued that a non-trivial geometric phase is achievable even in the situation of no cavity photons. We, however, show that such results hinge on imposing the {\it rotating wave approximation} (RWA), while without the RWA no Berry phases occur in these schemes. A geometrical interpretation of our results is obtained by introducing semi-classical energy surfaces which in a simple way brings out the phase space dynamics. With the RWA, a conical intersection between the surfaces em…
In the framework of the single-field slow-roll inflation, we derive the Hamiltonian of the linear primordial scalar and tensor perturbations in the form of time-dependent harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians. We find the invariant operators of the resulting Hamiltonians and use their eigenstates to calculate the adiabatic Berry phase for sub-horizon modes in terms of the Lewis-Riesenfeld phase. We conclude by discussing the discrepancy in the results of Pal et. al [Class. Quant. Grav. 30 (2013) 12] for these Berry phases, which is resolved to yield agreement with our results.
