We propose a generalized quantum geometric tenor to understand topological quantum phase transitions, which can be defined on the parameter space with the adiabatic evolution of a quantum many-body system. The generalized quantum geometric tenor contains two different local measurements, the non-Abelian Riemannian metric and the non-Abelian Berry curvature, which are recognized as two natural geometric characterizations for the change of the ground-state properties when the parameter of the Hamiltonian varies. Our results show the symmetry-breaking and topological quantum phase transitions can be understood as the singular behavior of the local and topological properties of the quantum geometric tenor in the thermodynamic limit.
In this thesis we extend the formalism of tensor network algorithms to incorporate global internal symmetries. We describe how to both numerically protect the symmetry and exploit it for computational gain in tensor network simulations. Our formalism is independent of the details of a specific tensor network decomposition since the symmetry constraints are imposed at the level of individual tensors. Moreover, the formalism can be applied to a wide spectrum of physical symmetries described by any discrete or continuous group that is compact and reducible. We describe in detail the implementatio…
The full exploitation of non-abelian symmetries in tensor network states (TNS) derived from a given lattice Hamiltonian is highly attractive in various aspects. From a theoretical perspective, it can offer deep insights into the entanglement structure and quantum information content of strongly correlated quantum many-body states. From a practical perspective, it allows one to push numerical efficiency by orders of magnitude. Physical expectation values based on TNS require the full contraction of a given tensor network, with the elementary ingredient being a pairwise contraction. While well-e…

A general framework for non-abelian symmetries is presented for matrix-product and tensor-network states in the presence of orthonormal local as well as effective basis sets. The two crucial ingredients, the Clebsch-Gordan algebra for multiplet spaces as well as the Wigner-Eckart theorem for operators, are accounted for in a natural, well-organized, and computationally straightforward way. The unifying tensor-representation for quantum symmetry spaces, dubbed QSpace, is particularly suitable to deal with standard renormalization group algorithms such as the numerical renormalization group (NRG…
The geometry of the parameter space is encoded by the quantum geometric tensor, which captures fundamental information about quantum states and contains both the quantum metric tensor and the curvature of the Berry connection. We present a formulation of the Berry connection and the quantum geometric tensor in the framework of the phase space or Wigner function formalism. This formulation is obtained through the direct application of the Weyl correspondence to the geometric structure under consideration. In particular, we show that the quantum metric tensor can be computed using only the Wigne…
Topology played an important role in physics research during the last few decades. In particular, the quantum geometric tensor that provides local information about topological properties has attracted much attention. It will reveal interesting topological properties in non-Abelian systems, which have not been realized in practice. Here, we use a four-qubit quantum system in superconducting circuits to construct a degenerate Hamiltonian with parametric modulation. By manipulating the Hamiltonian with periodic drivings, we simulate the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model and obtain the quantum geometri…
Abelian and Non-Abelian evolution of a quantum system manifests differently in the geometric phase acquired by the system under such evolutions. In this work we develop and study, using dressed state techniques, an experimentally realizable spin system which allows us to transit smoothly from non-Abelian to Abelian evolutions by changing externally controllable parameters. The study provides insights into the underlying physical phenomenon governing such a transition allowing us greater control on phase generation in a quantum system. The robustness of geometric phase against fluctuations of t…
The complete geometry of quantum states in parameter space is characterized by the quantum geometric tensor, which contains the quantum metric and Berry curvature as the real and imaginary parts, respectively. When the quantum states are degenerate, the quantum metric and Berry curvature take non-Abelian forms. The non-Abelian (Abelian) Berry curvature and Abelian quantum metric have been experimentally measured. However, an experimentally feasible scheme to extract all the components of the non-Abelian quantum metric tensor is still lacking. Here we propose a generic protocol to directly extr…
The existence of Hopf fibrations S^{2N+1}/S^1 = CP^N and S^{4K+3}/S^3 = HP^K allows us to treat the Hilbert space of generic finite-dimensional quantum systems as the total bundle space with respectively $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ fibers and complex and quaternionic projective spaces as base manifolds. This alternative method of studying quantum states and their evolution reveals the intimate connection between generic quantum mechanical systems and geometrical objects. The exact Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases, and more generally the geometrical factors for open paths, and their precise corr…
In this thesis I develop a formalism whereby a tensor network may be understood in terms of a unitary braided tensor category, and represented in a particularly efficient manner corresponding to the exploitation of this mathematical structure. This approach permits the exploitation of the global Abelian and non-Abelian internal group symmetries of a lattice model, both to facilitate the study of particular symmetry sectors and to provide a considerable reduction in computational cost. It also enables the study of models with non-trivial exchange statistics (fermions, Abelian and non-Abelian an…
This paper introduces a theoretical framework for understanding the accumulation of non-Abelian geometric phases in rotating nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Specifically, we consider how degenerate states can be achieved and demonstrate that the resulting geometric phase for multiple paths is non-Abelian. We find that the non-Abelian nature of the phase is robust to fluctuations in the path and magnetic field. In contrast to previous studies of the accumulation of Abelian geometric phases for nitrogen-vacancy centers under rotation we find that the limiting time-scale is $T_{1}$. As such …
A common strategy to measure the Abelian geometric phase for a qubit is to let it evolve along an 'orange slice' shaped path connecting two antipodal points on the Bloch sphere by two different semi- great circles. Since the dynamical phases vanish for such paths, this allows for direct measurement of the geometric phase. Here, we generalize the orange slice setting to the non-Abelian case. The proposed method to measure the non-Abelian geometric phase can be implemented in a cyclic chain of four qubits with controllable interactions.
In this reply, we address the comment by Ericsson and Sjoqvist on our paper [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 84}, 034103 (2011)]. We point out that the zero gauge field is not the evidence of trivial geometric phase for a non-Abelian SU(2) gauge field. Furthermore, the recalculation shows that the non-Abelian geometric phase we proposed in the three-level $Λ$ system is indeed experimentally detectable.
We use the theory of dynamical invariants to yield a simple derivation of noncyclic analogues of the Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases. This derivation relies only on the principle of gauge invariance and elucidates the existing definitions of the Abelian noncyclic geometric phase. We also discuss the adiabatic limit of the noncyclic geometric phase and compute the adiabatic non-Abelian noncyclic geometric phase for a spin 1 magnetic (or electric) quadrupole interacting with a precessing magnetic (electric) field.
We describe a non-Abelian Berry phase in polarisation optics, suggested by an analogy due to Nityananda between boosts in special relativity and the effect of elliptic dichroism on polarised light. The analogy permits a simple optical realization of the non-Abelian gauge field describing Thomas rotation. We also show how Thomas rotation can be understood geometrically on the Poincaré sphere in terms of the Pancharatnam phase.
Geometric phases, which are ubiquitous in quantum mechanics, are commonly more than only scalar quantities. Indeed, often they are matrix-valued objects that are connected with non-Abelian geometries. Here we show how generalized, non-Abelian geometric phases can be realized using electromagnetic waves travelling through coupled photonic waveguide structures. The waveguides implement an effective Hamiltonian possessing a degenerate dark subspace, in which an adiabatic evolution can occur. The associated quantum metric induces the notion of a geodesic that defines the optimal adiabatic evolutio…
A non-Abelian geometric method is proposed for rotating of heavy hole spins in a singly positive charged quantum dot in Voigt geometry. The key ingredient is the delay-dependent non-Abelian geometric phase, which is produced by the nonadiabatic transition between the two degenerate dark states. We demonstrate, by controlling the pump, the Stokes and the driving fields, that the rotations about $y$- and $z$-axes with arbitrary angles can be realized with high fidelity. Fast initialization and heavy hole spin state readout are also possible.
In their recent paper, Yan-Xiong Du et al. [Phys. Rev. A 84, 034103 (2011)] claim to have found a non-Abelian adiabatic geometric phase associated with the energy eigenstates of a large-detuned $Λ$ three-level system. They further propose a test to detect the non-commutative feature of this geometric phase. On the contrary, we show that the non-Abelian geometric phase picked up by the energy eigenstates of a $Λ$ system is trivial in the adiabatic approximation, while, in the exact treatment of the time evolution, this phase is very small and cannot be separated from the non-Abelian dynamical p…
If a quantum system evolves in a noncyclic fashion the corresponding geometric phase or holonomy may not be fully defined. Off-diagonal geometric phases have been developed to deal with such cases. Here, we generalize these phases to the non-Abelian case, by introducing off-diagonal holonomies that involve evolution of more than one subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. Physical realizations of the off-diagonal holonomies in adiabatic evolution and interferometry are put forward.
We propose a scheme for detecting noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase in circuit QED, which involves three transmon qubits capacitively coupled to an one-dimensional transmission line resonator. By controlling the external magnetic flux of the transmon qubits, we can obtain an effective tripod interaction of our circuit QED setup. The noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase is manifested that for an initial state undergo two specific loops in different order will result in different final states. Our numerical calculations show that this difference can b…
The concept of off-diagonal geometric phase (GP) has been introduced in order to recover interference information about the geometry of quantal evolution where the standard GPs are not well-defined. In this Letter, we propose a physical setting for realizing non-Abelian off-diagonal GPs. The proposed non-Abelian off-diagonal GPs can be implemented in a cyclic chain of four qubits with controllable nearest-neighbor interactions. Our proposal seems to be within reach in various nano-engineered systems and therefore opens up for first experimental test of the non-Abelian off-diagonal GP.
The geometric aspects of quantum mechanics are underlined most prominently by the concept of geometric phases, which are acquired whenever a quantum system evolves along a closed path in Hilbert space. The geometric phase is determined only by the shape of this path and is -- in its simplest form -- a real number. However, if the system contains degenerate energy levels, matrix-valued geometric phases, termed non-abelian holonomies, can emerge. They play an important role for the creation of synthetic gauge fields in cold atomic gases and the description of non-abelian anyon statistics. Moreov…
We propose for the first time an experimentally feasible scheme to disclose the noncommutative effects induced by a light-induced non-Abelian gauge structure with trapped ions. Under an appropriate configuration, a true non-Abelian gauge potential naturally arises in connection with the geometric phase associated with two degenerated dark states in a four-state atomic system interacting with three pulsed laser fields. We show that the population in atomic state at the end of a composed path formed by two closed loops $C_1$ and $C_2$ in the parameter space can be significantly different from th…
We propose an approach for an optical qubit rotation in the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. The qubit is encoded in the ground degenerate states at the relatively low temperature limit. The basic idea of the rotation procedure is the non-Abelian geometric phase in an adiabatic passage, which is produced by the nonadiabatic transition between the two degenerate dark states. The feasibility is based on the success of modeling the NV center as an excited-doublet four-level atom.
We introduce a self-consistent framework for the analysis of both Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases associated with open quantum systems, undergoing cyclic adiabatic evolution. We derive a general expression for geometric phases, based on an adiabatic approximation developed within an inherently open-systems approach. This expression provides a natural generalization of the analogous one for closed quantum systems, and we prove that it satisfies all the properties one might expect of a good definition of a geometric phase, including gauge invariance. A striking consequence is the emerge…
We introduce the entanglement gauge describing the combined effects of local operations and nonlocal unitary transformations on bipartite quantum systems. The entanglement gauge exploits the invariance of nonlocal properties for bipartite systems under local (gauge) transformations. This new formalism yields observable effects arising from the gauge geometry of the bipartite system. In particular, we propose a non-Abelian gauge theory realized via two separated spatial modes of the quantized electromagnetic field manipulated by linear optics. In this linear optical realization, a bi-partite st…
We discuss recent progress in Tensor Lattice Field Theory and economical, symmetry preserving, truncations suitable for quantum computations or simulations. We focus on spin and gauge models with continuous Abelian symmetries such as the Abelian Higgs model and emphasize noise-robust implementations of Gauss's law. We discuss recent progress concerning the comparison between field digitizations and character expansions, symmetry breaking in tensor language, wave-packet preparation and possible new implementations of Abelian models using Rydberg atoms.
We present a superconducting circuit in which non-Abelian geometric transformations can be realized using an adiabatic parameter cycle. In contrast to previous proposals, we employ quantum evolution in the ground state. We propose an experiment in which the transition from non-Abelian to Abelian cycles can be observed by measuring the pumped charge as a function of the period of the cycle. Alternatively, the non-Abelian phase can be detected using a single-electron transistor working as a charge sensor.
Topological phases of matter became a new standard to classify quantum systems in many cases, yet key quantities like the quantum geometric tensor providing local information about topological properties are still experimentally hard to access. In non-Abelian systems this accessibility to geometric properties can be even more restrictive due to the degeneracy of the states. We propose universal protocols to determine quantum geometric properties in non-Abelian systems. First, we show that for a weak resonant driving of the local parameters the coherent Rabi oscillations are related to the quan…
Adiabatic $U(2)$ geometric phases are studied for arbitrary quantum systems with a three-dimensional Hilbert space. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of the non-Abelian geometrical phases are obtained without actually solving the full eigenvalue problem for the instantaneous Hamiltonian. The parameter space of such systems which has the structure of $\xC P^2$ is explicitly constructed. The results of this article are applicable for arbitrary multipole interaction Hamiltonians $H=Q^{i_1,\cdots i_n}J_{i_1}\cdots J_{i_n}$ and their linear combinations for spin $j=1$ systems. …
We show that standard identities and theorems for lattice models with $U(1)$ symmetry get re-expressed discretely in the tensorial formulation of these models. We explain the geometrical analogy between the continuous lattice equations of motion and the discrete selection rules of the tensors. We construct a gauge-invariant transfer matrix in arbitrary dimensions. We show the equivalence with its gauge-fixed version in a maximal temporal gauge and explain how a discrete Gauss's law is always enforced. We propose a noise-robust way to implement Gauss's law in arbitrary dimensions. We reformulat…
We construct a unified operator framework for quantum holonomies generated from bosonic systems. For a system whose Hamiltonian is bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, we find a holonomy group determined only by a set of selected orthonormal modes obeying a stronger version of the adiabatic theorem. This photon-number independent description offers deeper insight as well as a computational advantage when compared to the standard formalism on geometric phases. In particular, a strong analogy between quantum holonomies and linear optical networks can be drawn. This relation provi…
For a periodic Hamiltonian, periodic dynamical invariants may be used to obtain non-degenerate cyclic states. This observation is generalized to the degenerate cyclic states, and the relation between the periodic dynamical invariants and the Floquet decompositions of the time-evolution operator is elucidated. In particular, a necessary condition for the occurrence of cyclic non-adiabatic non-Abelian geometrical phase is derived. Degenerate cyclic states are obtained for a magnetic dipole interacting with a precessing magnetic field.
We demonstrate how non-Abelian geometric phases can be used to universally process a spin qubit in heavy hole quantum dots in the absence of magnetic fields. A time dependent electric quadrupole field is used to perform any desired single qubit operation by virtue of non-Abelian holonomy. During the proposed operations, the degeneracy of the time dependent two level system representing the qubit is not split. Since time reversal symmetry is preserved and hyperfine coupling is known to be weak in spin qubits based on heavy holes, we expect very long coherence times in the proposed setup.
We have developed an adiabatic Abelian geometric quantum computation strategy based on the non-degenerate energy eigenstates in (but not limited to) superconducting phase-qubit systems. The fidelity of the designed quantum gate was evaluated in the presence of simulated thermal fluctuation in superconducting phase qubits circuit and was found to be rather robust against the random errors. In addition, it was elucidated that the Berry phase in the designed adiabatic evolution may be detected directly via the quantum state tomography developed for superconducting qubits.
We study the adiabatic dynamics of degenerate quantum states induced by loop paths in a control parameter space. The latter correspond to noisy trajectories if the system is weakly coupled to environmental modes. On top of conventional dynamic dephasing, we find a universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contribution and express it in terms of the non-Abelian Berry connection and curvature. We show that NAGD implies either decay or amplification of coherences as compared to the coherences when only dynamic dephasing is present. The full NAGD matrix structure can be probed through inter…
