For a periodic Hamiltonian, periodic dynamical invariants may be used to obtain non-degenerate cyclic states. This observation is generalized to the degenerate cyclic states, and the relation between the periodic dynamical invariants and the Floquet decompositions of the time-evolution operator is elucidated. In particular, a necessary condition for the occurrence of cyclic non-adiabatic non-Abelian geometrical phase is derived. Degenerate cyclic states are obtained for a magnetic dipole interacting with a precessing magnetic field.
Three-body correlations, which arise between spin-polarized electrons in the first excited Landau level, are believed to play a key role in the emergence of enigmatic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effects. Inspired by recent advances in Floquet engineering, we investigate periodic driving of anisotropic two-body interactions as a route for controllably creating and tuning effective three-body interactions in the FQH regime. We develop an analytic formalism to describe this Floquet-FQH protocol, which is distinct from previous approaches that instead focus on bandstructure engineeri…
Floquet engineering, modulating quantum systems in a time periodic way, lies at the central part for realizing novel topological dynamical states. Thanks to the Floquet engineering, various new realms on experimentally simulating topological materials have emerged. Conventional Floquet engineering, however, only applies to time periodic non-dissipative Hermitian systems, and for the quantum systems in reality, non-Hermitian process with dissipation usually occurs. So far, it remains unclear how to characterize topological phases of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems via the frequency sp…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are characterized by nonanalytic behaviors of physical observables as functions of time. When a system is subject to time-periodic modulations, the nonanalytic signatures of its observables could recur periodically in time, leading to the phenomena of Floquet DQPTs. In this work, we systematically explore Floquet DQPTs in a class of periodically quenched one-dimensional system with chiral symmetry. By tuning the strength of quench, we find multiple Floquet DQPTs within a single driving period, with more DQPTs being observed when the system is initial…
Electrons in a lattice exhibit time-periodic motion, known as Bloch oscillation, when subject to an additional static electric field. Here we show that a corresponding dynamics can occur upon replacing the spatially periodic potential by a time-periodic driving: Floquet oscillations of charge carriers in a spatially homogeneous system. The time lattice of the driving gives rise to Floquet bands that take on the role of the usual Bloch bands. For two different drivings (harmonic driving and periodic kicking through pulses) of systems with linear dispersion we demonstrate the existence of such o…
We provide a comprehensive study of the energy transfer phenomenon -- populating a given energy level -- in 3- and 4-level quantum systems coupled to two thermal baths. In particular, we examine the effects of an external periodic driving and the coherence induced by the baths on the efficiency of the energy transfer. We consider the Floquet-Lindblad and the Floquet-Redfield scenarios, which both are in the Born-Markov, weak-coupling regime but differ in the treatment of the secular approximation, and for the latter, we develop an appropriate Floquet-type master equation by employing a partial…
The Floquet theorem allows to reformulate periodic time-dependent problems such as the interaction of a many-body system with a laser field in terms of time-independent, field-dressed states, also known as Floquet states. If this was possible for density functional theory as well, one could reduce in such cases time-dependent density functional theory to a time-independent Floquet density functional theory. We analyze under which conditions the Floquet theorem is applicable in a density-functional framework. By employing numerical {\em ab initio} solutions of the interacting time-dependent Sch…
How to understand the order of Floquet stationary states in the presence of external bath coupling and their statistical mechanics is challenging; the answers are important for preparations and control of those Floquet states. Here, we propose a scheme to classify the statistical distribution of Floquet states for time-periodic systems which couple to an external heat bath. If an effective Hamiltonian and a system-bath coupling operator, which are all time-independent, can be simultaneously obtained via a time-periodic unitary transformation, the statistical mechanics of the Floquet states is …
An integrable model subjected to a periodic driving gives rise generally to a non-integrable Floquet Hamiltonian. Here we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the integrable Lieb--Liniger model in presence of a linear potential with a periodic time--dependent strength is instead integrable and its quasi-energies can be determined using the Bethe ansatz approach. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system at stroboscopic times and we also propose a possible experimental realisation of the periodically driven tilting in terms of a shaken rotated ring potential.
Two connected equiperiodic one-dimensional multi-well potentials of different well depths are studied. Floquet/Bloch energy bands for respective multi-well potential are found to be relevant for understanding level structures. Althoug energies are classically allowed in both multi-well potentials, a band gap of one multi-well potential makes this potential quantum-mechanically 'forbidden'. All energy levels are located in the union of the band regions.
By the general theory of $PT$-symmetric quantum systems, their energy levels are either real or occur in complex-conjugate pairs, which implies that the secular equation must be real. However, for periodic potentials it is by no means clear that the secular equation arising in the Floquet method is indeed real, since it involves two linearly independent solutions of the Schrödinger equation. In this brief note we elucidate how that reality can be established.
Floquet theory provides rigorous foundations for the theory of periodically driven quantum systems. In the case of non-periodic driving, however, the situation is not so well understood. Here, we provide a critical review of the theoretical framework developed for quasi-periodically driven quantum systems. Although the theoretical footing is still under development, we argue that quasi-periodically driven quantum systems can be treated with generalizations of Floquet theory in suitable parameter regimes. Moreover, we provide a generalization of the Floquet-Magnus expansion and argue that quasi…
We introduce and develop an approach to realizing a topological phase transition and non-Abelian statistics with dynamically induced Floquet Majorana Fermions (FMFs). When the periodic driving potential does not break fermion parity conservation, FMFs can encode quantum information. Quasi-energy analysis shows that a stable FMF zero mode and two other satellite modes exist in a wide parameter space with large quasi-energy gaps, which prevents transitions to other Floquet states under adiabatic driving. We also show that in the asymptotic limit FMFs preserve non-Abelian statistics and, thus, be…
Quantum particles performing Bloch oscillations in a spatially periodic potential can be used as a very accurate detector of constant forces. We find that the similar oscillations that can appear in the Floquet phase space of a quantum particle subjected a periodic temporal driving, even in the absence of periodic lattice potential, can likewise be exploited as detectors. Compared with their spatial Bloch analog, however, the Floquet-Bloch oscillations provide significant added flexibility and open the way to a broad range of precision metrology applications. We illustrate this property on the…
Floquet higher order topological insulators (FHOTIs) are a novel topological phase that can occur in periodically driven lattices. An appropriate experimental platform to realize FHOTIs has not yet been identified. We introduce a periodically-driven bipartite (two-band) system that hosts FHOTI phases, and predict that this lattice can be realized in experimentally-realistic optical waveguide arrays, similar to those previously used to study anomalous Floquet insulators. The model exhibits interesting phase transitions from first-order to second-order topological matter by tuning a coupling str…
For a closed system with periodic driving, Floquet theorem tells that the time evolution operator can be written as $ U(t,0)\equiv P(t)e^{\frac{-i}{\hbar}H_F t}$ with $P(t+T)=P(t)$, and $H_F$ is Hermitian and time-independent called Floquet Hamiltonian. In this work, we extend the Floquet theorem from closed systems to open systems described by a Lindblad master equation that is periodic in time. Lindbladian expansion in powers of $\frac 1 ω$ is derived, where $ω$ is the driving frequency. Two examples are presented to illustrate the theory. We find that appropriate trace preserving time-indep…
A variational principle enabling one to compute individual Floquet states of a periodically time-dependent quantum system is formulated, and successfully tested against the benchmark system provided by the analytically solvable model of a linearly driven harmonic oscillator. The principle is particularly well suited for tracing individual Floquet states through parameter space, and may allow one to obtain Floquet states even for very high-dimensional systems which cannot be treated by the known standard numerical methods.
We apply periodic control to realize a quantum thermal transistor, which we term as the Floquet Quantum thermal Transistor. Periodic modulation allows us to control the heat flows and achieve large amplification factors even for fixed bath temperatures. Importantly, this transistor effect persists in the cut-off region, where traditional quantum thermal transistors operating in absence of periodic modulation, fail to act as viable heat modulation devices.
For a periodically driven open quantum system, the Floquet theorem states that the time evolution operator $Λ(t,0)$ of the system can be factorized as $Λ(t,0)=\mathcal{D}(t)e^{\mathcal{L}_{eff}t}$ with micro-motion operator $\mathcal{D}(t)$ possessing the same period as the external driving, and time-independent operator $\mathcal{L}_{eff}$. In this work, we extend this theorem to open systems that follow a modulated periodic evolution, in which the fast part is periodic while the slow part breaks the periodicity. We derive a factorization for the time evolution operator that separates the lon…
The Floquet-Magnus expansion is a useful tool to calculate an effective Hamiltonian for periodically driven systems. In this study, we investigate the convergence of the expansion for a one-body nonlinear system in a continuous space, a driven anharmonic oscillator. In this model, all eigenstates of the time evolution operator are found to be localized in energy space, and the expectation value of the energy is bounded from above. We first propose a general procedure to estimate the radius of convergence of the Floquet-Magnus expansion for periodically driven systems with an unbounded energy s…
Exotic topological states of matter such as Floquet topological insulator or Floquet Weyl semimetal can be induced by periodic driving. This work proposes a Floquet semimetal with Floquet-band holonomy. That is, the system is gapless, but as a periodic parameter viewed as quasimomentum of a synthetic dimension completes an adiabatic cycle, each Floquet band as a whole exchanges with other Floquet bands. The dynamical manifestations of such Floquet-band holonomy are studied. Under open boundary conditions, we discover anomalous chiral edge modes localized only at one edge, winding around the en…
The dynamics of an isolated quantum system is coherent and unitary. Weak coupling to the environment leads to decoherence, which is traditionally modeled with a Lindblad equation for the system's density matrix. Starting from a pure state, such a system approaches a steady state (mixed or otherwise) in an underdamped or overdamped manner. This transition occurs at an eigenvalue degeneracy of a Lindblad superoperator, called an exceptional point (EP), where corresponding eigenvectors coalesce. Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in creating exceptional points in a truly quantum doma…
Floquet driven systems represent an extremely interesting arena to study out-of-equilibrium phenomena. For instance, they provide realizations of discrete time crystals, where the discrete time translation symmetry of the periodic Hamiltonian is spontaneously broken by a subharmonic response of the system. However, the continuous presence of an external periodic driving is required within the current Floquet paradigm. We propose here the concept of spontaneous many-body Floquet state. This is a state that, in the absence of external periodic driving, self-oscillates like in the presence of a p…
Detection of weak electromagnetic waves and hypothetical particles aided by quantum amplification is important for fundamental physics and applications. However, demonstrations of quantum amplification are still limited; in particular, the physics of quantum amplification is not fully explored in periodically driven (Floquet) systems, which are generally defined by time-periodic Hamiltonians and enable observation of many exotic quantum phenomena such as time crystals. Here we investigate the magnetic-field signal amplification by periodically driven $^{129}$Xe spins and observe signal amplifi…
Periodically driven non-Hermitian systems could possess exotic nonequilibrium phases with unique topological, dynamical and transport properties. In this work, we introduce an experimentally realizable two-leg ladder model subjecting to both time-periodic quenches and non-Hermitian effects, which belongs to an extended CII symmetry class. Due to the interplay between drivings and nonreciprocity, rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases emerge in the system, with each of them been characterized by a pair of even-integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π)\in2\mathbb{Z}\times2\mathbb{Z}$. U…
Floquet engineering of isolated systems is often based on the concept of the effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian, which describes the stroboscopic evolution of a periodically driven quantum system in steps of the driving period and which is routinely obtained analytically using high-frequency expansions. The generalization of these concepts to open quantum systems described by a Markovian master equation of Lindblad type turns out to be non-trivial: On the one hand, already for a two-level system two different phases can be distinguished, where the effective time-independent Floquet…
We consider the Markovian Master Equation over matrix algebra $\mathbb{M}_d$, governed by periodic Lindbladian $L_t$ in standard (Kossakowski-Lindblad-Gorini-Sudarshan) form. It is shown that under simplifying assumption of commutativity, i.e. if $L_t L_{t'} = L_{t'}L_t$ for any moments of time $t,t'\in\mathbb{R}_+$, the Floquet normal form of resulting completely positive dynamical map is not guaranteed to be given by simultaneously globally Markovian maps. In fact, the periodic part of the solution is even shown to be necessarily non-Markovian. Two examples in algebra $\mathbb{M}_2$ are expl…

We study the Floquet edge states in arrays of periodically curved optical waveguides described by the modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Beyond the bulk-edge correspondence, our study explores the interplay between band topology and periodic modulations. By analysing the quasi-energy spectra and Zak phase, we reveal that, although topological and non-topological edge states can exist for the same parameters, \emph{they can not appear in the same spectral gap}. In the high-frequency limit, we find analytically all boundaries between the different phases and study the coexistence of topologic…
A transmission phenomenon for a quantal particle scattered through a multi-well potential in one dimension is observed by means of an amplitude-phase method. The potential model consists of $N$ identical potential cells, each containing a symmetric well. Typical transmission bands contain $N-1$ possible energies of total transmission. It is found that certain band types contain $n$ energies of total transmission. A fusion phenomenon of this type of band with a typical neigboring band is also found. As the transmission gap between them collapse and disappear, a resulting fused single band is se…
Many-mode Floquet theory [T.-S. Ho, S.-I. Chu, and J. V. Tietz, Chem. Phys. Lett., v. 96, 464 (1983)] is a technique for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in the special case of multiple periodic fields, but its limitations are not well understood. We show that for a Hamiltonian consisting of two time-periodic couplings of commensurate frequencies (integer multiples of a common frequency), many-mode Floquet theory provides a correct expression for unitary time evolution. However, caution must be taken in the interpretation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding …

We consider a quantum system periodically driven with a strength which varies slowly on the scale of the driving period. The analysis is based on a general formulation of the Floquet theory relying on the extended Hilbert space. It is shown that the dynamics of the system can be described in terms of a slowly varying effective Floquet Hamiltonian that captures the long-term evolution, as well as rapidly oscillating micromotion operators. We obtain a systematic high-frequency expansion of all these operators. Generalizing the previous studies, the expanded effective Hamiltonian is now time-depe…
We propose a general framework to solve tight binding models in D dimensional lattices driven by ac electric fields. Our method is valid for arbitrary driving regimes and allows to obtain effective Hamiltonians for different external fields configurations. We establish an equivalence with time independent lattices in D+1 dimensions, and analyze their topological properties. Further, we demonstrate that non-adiabaticity drives a transition from topological invariants defined in D+1 to D dimensions. Our approach provides a theoretical framework to analyze ac driven systems, with potential applic…
The violation of the Floquet version of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is systematically discussed with realistic Hamiltonians. Our model is based on the PXP type interactions without disorder. We exactly prove the existence of many-body scar states in the Floquet eigenstates, by showing the explicit expressions of the wave functions. Using the underlying physical mechanism, various driven Hamiltonians with Floquet-scar states can be systematically engineered.
Floquet engineering or coherent time periodic driving of quantum systems has been successfully used to synthesize Hamiltonians with novel properties. In ultracold atomic systems, this has led to experimental realizations of artificial gauge fields, topological band structures, and observation of dynamical localization, to name just a few. Here we present a Floquet-based framework to stroboscopically engineer Hamiltonians with spatial features and periodicity below the diffraction limit of light used to create them by time-averaging over various configurations of a 1D optical Kronig-Penney (KP)…
The non-Hermiticity caused breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC) in topological phase transition was cured by the skin effect for the systems with chiral symmetry and translation invariance. However, periodic driving, as an active tool in engineering exotic topological phases, breaks the chiral symmetry, and the inevitable disorder destroys the translation invariance. Here, we propose a scheme to retrieve the BBC and establish a complete description of the topological phases of the periodically driven non-Hermitian system both with and without the translation invariance. The demo…
In Floquet engineering, periodic driving is used to realize novel phases of matter which are inaccessible in thermal equilibrium. For this purpose, the Floquet theory provides us a recipe of obtaining a static effective Hamiltonian. Although many existing works have treated closed systems, it is important to consider the effect of dissipation, which is ubiquitous in nature. Understanding interplay of periodic driving and dissipation is not only a fundamental problem of nonequilibrium statistical physics, but also receiving growing interest because of the fact that experimental advances have al…
