The concept of multi-gap topology has recently been shown to give rise to uncharted phases beyond conventional single-gap classifications. These phases relate to band nodes with non-Abelian quaternion charges and momentum-space braiding processes characterized by new invariants such as paradigmatic Euler class, phenomena that intrinsically require at least two spatial dimensions. Extending such phases into the non-equilibrium regime is predicted to unlock even richer multi-gap topologies beyond static settings, yet their experimental realization has remained elusive due to the stringent requirements on dimensionality, symmetry, and dynamical control. Here, we theoretically demonstrate and, for the first time, experimentally realize two-dimensional (2D) Floquet non-Abelian band topology in photonic scattering networks. Within this platform, we uncover a sequence of topological phenomena unique to 2D multi-gap systems far from equilibrium, including anomalous multi-gap phases interconnected by band nodes, Floquet Euler transfer, gapped phases with anomalous Dirac string configurations, and Floquet-induced non-Abelian braiding of band nodes. In addition, we observe Floquet-periodic anomalous edge states across multiple gaps, providing experimental signatures of these sought-after 2D multi-gap Floquet topological phases. Our results establish photonic scattering networks as a practical and versatile route to non-Abelian Floquet systems, opening avenues for dynamical topological physics with braiding capability and robust photonic functionalities.
The Lieb Lattice exhibits intriguing properties that are of general interest in both the fundamental physics and practical applications. Here, we investigate the topological Landau-Zener Bloch oscillation in a photonic Floquet Lieb lattice, where the dimerized helical waveguides is constructed to realize the synthetic spin-orbital interaction through the Floquet mechanism, rendering us to study the impacts of topological transition from trivial gaps to non-trivial ones. The compact localized states of flat bands supported by the local symmetry of Lieb lattice will be associated with other band…
A recently-proposed class of photonic topological insulators is shown to map onto Chalker-Coddington-type networks, which were originally formulated to study disordered quantum Hall systems. Such network models are equivalent to the Floquet states of periodically-driven lattices. We show that they can exhibit topologically protected edge states even if all bands have zero Chern number, which is a characteristic property of Floquet bandstructures. These edge states can be counted by an adiabatic pumping invariant based on the winding number of the coefficient of reflection from one edge of the …
Periodically driven systems, characterised by their inherent non-equilibrium dynamics, are ubiquitously found in both classical and quantum regimes. In the field of photonics, these Floquet systems have begun to provide insight into how time periodicity can extend the concept of spatially periodic photonic crystals and metamaterials to the time domain. However, despite the necessity arising from the presence of non-reciprocal coupling between states in a photonic Floquet medium, a unified non-Hermitian band structure description remains elusive. Here, we experimentally reveal the unique Bloch-…
We propose a class of photonic Floquet topological insulators based on staggered helical lattices and an efficient numerical method for calculating their Floquet bandstructure. The lattices support anomalous Floquet topological insulator phases with vanishing Chern number and tunable topological transitions. At the critical point of the topological transition, the bandstructure hosts a single unpaired Dirac cone, which yields a variety of unusual transport effects: a discrete analogue of conical diffraction, weak antilocalization not limited by intervalley scattering, and suppression of Anders…
The public and scientists constantly have different perspectives. While on a time crystal, they stand in line and ask: What is a time crystal? Show me a material that is spontaneously crystalline in time? This study synthesizes a photonic material of Floquet time crystals and experimentally observes its indicative period-2T beating. We explicitly reconstruct a discrete time-crystalline ground state and reveal using an appropriately-designed photonic Floquet simulator the rigid period-doubling as a signature of the spontaneous breakage of the discrete time-translational symmetry. Unlike the res…
In this paper, we theoretically study the Floquet engineering of two dimensional photonic waveguide arrays in three types of lattices: honeycomb lattice with Kekule distortion, breathing square lattice and breathing Kagome lattice. The Kekule distortion factor or the breathing factor in the corresponding lattice is periodically changed along the axial direction of the photonic waveguide with frequency $ω$. Within certain ranges of $ω$, the Floquet corner states in the Floquet band gap of quasi-energy spectrum are found, which are localized at the corner of the finite two-dimensional arrays. Du…
Edge modes in topological insulators are known to be robust against defects. We investigate if this also holds true when the defect is not static, but varies in time. We study the influence of defects with time-dependent coupling on the robustness of the transport along the edge in a Floquet system of helically curved waveguides. Waveguide arrays are fabricated via direct laser writing in a negative tone photoresist. We find that single dynamic defects do not destroy the chiral edge current, even when the temporal modulation is strong. Quantitative numerical simulation of the intensity in the …
Photonic Floquet lattices provide an excellent platform for manipulating different topologically protect-ed edge states. However, anti-chiral edge states have not been discussed much in Floquet lattices. Here, we propose a waveguide structure by combining two honeycomb Floquet photonic lattices with oppo-site rotation directions. In this structure, we find that the anti-chiral edge states have the same trans-mission direction on two parallel body edges. With an increasing modulation phase difference between the two sublattices in one direction, the width of the band gap becomes smaller and the…
In this letter we analyze an optical Fabry-Pérot resonator as a time-periodic driving of the (2D) optical field repeatedly traversing the resonator, uncovering that resonator twist produces a synthetic magnetic field applied to the light within the resonator, while mirror aberrations produce relativistic dynamics, anharmonic trapping, and spacetime curvature. We develop a Floquet formalism to compute the effective Hamiltonian for the 2D field, generalizing the idea that the intra-cavity optical field corresponds to an ensemble of non-interacting, massive, harmonically trapped particles. This w…
Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the search for exotic topological states, which usually exist at an interface between lattices with differing topological invariants according to the bulk-edge correspondence. Here, we show a new finding of topological states localized at the interface between two gauge-shifted Floquet photonic lattices, despite the same topological order across the entire structure. The quasienergy band structures reveal that these new interface modes belong to the Floquet π modes, which are further found to enable a robust one-way propagation thanks to the flexible con…

High-order topological phases, such as those with nontrivial quadrupole moments, protect edge states that are themselves topological insulators in lower dimensions. So far, most quadrupole phases of light are explored in linear optical systems, which are protected by spatial symmetries or synthetic symmetries. Here we present Floquet quadrupole phases in driven nonlinear photonic crystals (PhCs) that are protected by space-time screw symmetries. We start by illustrating space-time symmetries by tracking the trajectory of instantaneous optical axes of the driven media. Our Floquet quadrupole ph…
We present an absorbing boundary condition for electromagnetic frequency domain simulations of photonic crystals and metamaterials. This boundary condition can simultaneously absorb multiple Bloch-Floquet eigenmodes of a periodic crystal, including both propagating and evanescent modes. The photonic crystal or metamaterial in question can include lossy, active, anisotropic and even bi-anisotropic inclusions. The absorbing boundary condition is dependent on an orthogonality condition for Bloch-Floquet eigenmodes, a generalized version of which is presented here. We test this absorbing boundary …
By utilizing Floquet driving protocols and interlacing them with a judicious reservoir emission engineering we achieve extreme non-reciprocal thermal radiation. We show that the latter is rooted in an interplay between a direct radiation process occurring due to temperature bias between two thermal baths and the modulation process which is responsible for pumped radiation heat. Our theoretical results are confirmed via time-domain simulations with RF circuits.
Floquet-Bloch lattices are systems in which wave packets are subjet to periodic modulations both in time and space, showing rich dynamics. While this type of lattices is difficult to implement in solid-state physics, optical systems have provided excellent platforms to probe their physics: among other effects, they have revealed genuine phenomena such as the anomalous Floquet topological insulator and the funnelling of light into localised interface modes. Despite the crucial importance of the band dispersion in the photon dynamics and the topological properties of the lattice, the direct expe…
One dimensional laser-written modulated photonic lattices are known to be particularly suitable for diffraction management purposes. Here, we address the connection between discrete non-diffracting states and topological properties in such devices through the experimental observation and identification of three classes of non-diffracting state. The first one corresponds to topologically protected edge states, recently predicted in Floquet topological insulators, while the second and third are both bulk modes. One of them testifies of a topological transition, although presenting topological fe…
Using the Floquet Hamiltonian derived based on the time-dependent perturbation theory, we investigated the quasienergy bands of a one-dimensional time-Floquet photonic crystal. The time-Floquet photonic crystal contains two alternating layers labeled as A and B, and the permittivity of A layer is modulated periodically in time. We showed that the quasienergy bands are reciprocal when the modulation function is a function of time only, while the quasienergy bands could be nonreciprocal when the permittivity is modulated in both time and space through an unique combination. In the former case, t…
Commonly, a two-dimensional topological insulator is characterized by non-zero Chern numbers associated with its band structure. In our work, we present the experimental demonstration of an anomalous topological insulator, for which the Chern numbers are always zero, and the winding number is the appropriate quantity describing the topological character of the system. We probe the robustness of the chiral edge states in such anomalous topological insulators and analyze the phase transition between topological and trivial phase.
A photonic Floquet topological insulator has previously been experimentally realized in an array of evanescently-coupled helical waveguides. In the topological regime probed by that experiment, the chirality of the single topological edge mode was the same as the chirality of the helices. Here we demonstrate the rich structure present in Floquet systems by fixing the helix chirality while moving into the strong driving regime to observe a topological transition in which the edge mode reverses its propagation direction, yielding the counterintuitive result that an increase of the driving amplit…
The engineering of synthetic materials characterised by more than one class of topological invariants is one of the current challenges of solid-state based and synthetic materials. Using a synthetic photonic lattice implemented in a two-coupled ring system we engineer an anomalous Floquet metal that is gapless in the bulk and shows simultaneously two different topological properties. On the one hand, this synthetic lattice presents bands characterised by a winding number. The winding emerges from the breakup of inversion symmetry and it directly relates to the appearance of Bloch suboscillatio…

We demonstrate the photonic Floquet topological insulator (PFTI) in an atomic vapor with nonlinear susceptibilities. The interference of three coupling fields splits the energy levels periodically to form a periodic refractive index structure with honeycomb symmetry that can be adjusted by the choice of frequency detunings and intensities of the coupling fields, which all affect the appearance of Dirac cones in the momentum space. When the honeycomb lattice sites are helically ordered along the propagation direction, we obtain a PFTI in the atomic vapor in which an obliquely incident beam move…
Quantum network facilitates the secure transmission of information between different users. Establishing communication links among multiple users in a scalable and efficient way is important for realizing a large-scale quantum network. Here we develop an energy-time entanglement-based dense wavelength division multiplexed network based on an integrated silicon nitride micro-ring resonator, which offers a wide frequency span (covering at least the entire C-band) and narrow bandwidth modes (~ 650MHz). Six pairs of photons are selected to form a fully and simultaneously connected four-user quantu…

Photonic and acoustic topological insulators exhibiting one-way transportation that is robust against defects and impurities are typically realized in coupled arrays of two-dimensional ring resonators. These systems have produced a series of applications, including optical isolators, delay lines, and lasers. However, the structures are complicated because an additional coupler ring between neighboring rings is needed to construct photonic pseudo-spin. In this work, a photonic analogue of the quantum spin Hall effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an anomalous Floquet topologica…
We consider a system of dynamically-modulated photonic resonator lattice undergoing photonic transition, and show that in the ultra-strong coupling regime such a lattice can exhibit non-trivial topological properties, including topologically non-trivial band gaps, and the associated topologically-robust one-way edge states. Compared with the same system operating in the regime where the rotating wave approximation is valid, operating the system in the ultra-strong coupling regime results in one-way edge modes that has a larger bandwidth, and is less susceptible to loss. Also, in the ultra-stro…
We propose a scheme to realize controlled phase gate between two single photons through a single quantum dot in slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguide. Enhanced Purcell factor and beta factor lead to high gate fidelity over broadband frequencies compared to cavity-assisted system. The excellent physical integration of this silicon photonic crystal waveguide system provides tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.
We present Floquet fractal topological insulators: photonic topological insulators in a fractal-dimensional lattice consisting of helical waveguides. The helical modulation induces an artificial gauge field and leads to the trivial-to-topological transition. The quasienergy spectrum shows the existence of topological edge states corresponding to real-space Chern number 1. We study the propagation of light along the outer edges of the fractal lattice and find that wavepackets move along the edges without penetrating into the bulk or backscattering even in the presence of disorder. In a similar …
The topological insulator is a fundamentally new phase of matter, with the striking property that the conduction of electrons occurs only on its surface, not within the bulk, and that conduction is topologically protected. Topological protection, the total lack of scattering of electron waves by disorder, is perhaps the most fascinating and technologically important aspect of this material: it provides robustness that is otherwise known only for superconductors. However, unlike superconductivity and the quantum Hall effect, which necessitate low temperatures or magnetic fields, the immunity to…
We study the exceptional point (EP) phenomena in a photonic medium with a complex time-periodic permiitivity, i.e., $ε(t)=ε_o+ε_r*sin(Ωt+ϕ)$. We formulate the Maxwell's equations in a form of first-order non-Hermitian Floquet Hamiltonian matrix and solve it analytically for the Floquet band structures. In the case when $ε_r$ is real, to the first order in $ε_r$, the band structures show a phase transition from an exact phase with real quasienergies to a broken phase with complex quasienergies inside a region of wave vector space, the so-called k-gap. We show that the two EPs at the upper and l…
We consider periodically modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with gain and loss. This model, which can be realized with current technology in photonics using waveguides, allows us to study Floquet topological insulating phase. By using Floquet theory, we find the quasi-energy spectrum of this one dimensional PT symmetric topological insulator. We show that stable Floquet topological phase exists in our model provided that oscillation frequency is large and the non-Hermitian degree is below than a critical value.
Quantum walks are processes that model dynamics in coherent systems. Their experimental implementations proved key to unveil novel phenomena in Floquet topological insulators. Here we realize a photonic quantum walk in the presence of a synthetic gauge field, which mimics the action of an electric field on a charged particle. By tuning the energy gaps between the two quasi-energy bands, we investigate intriguing system dynamics characterized by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. When both gaps at quasi-energy values 0 and $π$ are vanishingly small, the Floqu…
In this work, we reported a ubiquitous presence of topological Floquet time crystal (TFTC) in one-dimensional periodically-driven systems. The rigidity and realization of spontaneous discrete time-translation symmetry (DTS) breaking in our model require necessarily coexistence of anomalous topological invariants (0 modes and $π$ modes), instead of the presence of disorders or many-body localization. We found that in a particular frequency range of the underlying drive, the anomalous Floquet phase coexistence between zero and pi modes can produce the period-doubling (2T, two cycles of the drive…

A method for realizing asymmetric (one-way) transmission of discretized light in modulated, linear and purely passive optical lattices is suggested, which exploits the idea of unidirectional coherent perfect absorption. The system consists of a linear photonic lattice of coupled resonators or waveguides, side coupled to a chain of lossy elements, in which light can avoid the occupation of the dissipative sites when propagating in one way, but not in the opposite one. Non-reciprocity requires modulation of the resonator/waveguide parameters, realizing a dissipative optical Aharonov-Bohm diode w…
Achieving topologically-protected robust transport in optical systems has recently been of great interest. Most topological photonic structures can be understood by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell's equations for a static linear system. Here, we extend topological phases into dynamically driven nonlinear systems and achieve a Floquet Chern insulator of light in nonlinear photonic crystals (PhCs). Specifically, we start by presenting the Floquet eigenvalue problem in driven two-dimensional PhCs and show it is necessarily non-Hermitian. We then define topological invariants associated …
