We propose a scheme to realize controlled phase gate between two single photons through a single quantum dot in slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguide. Enhanced Purcell factor and beta factor lead to high gate fidelity over broadband frequencies compared to cavity-assisted system. The excellent physical integration of this silicon photonic crystal waveguide system provides tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.
We investigate theoretically the entanglement of two quantum dots (QDs) coupled to metallic nanowaveguide in the presence of the flip-flop interaction with the analytical solutions of eigenvalue equations of the coupled system. High entanglement of two QDs could be achieved by adjusting the direct coupling strength of the QDs, the interaction of QDs with near-zero waveguide modes, interparticle distance of the QDs, total dissipation and detuning even when two QDs are resonant with the incident single plasmon. The discussed system with the flip-flop interaction provides us rich way to realize t…
We study metamaterials with an anisotropic effective permittivity tensor in which one component is near zero. We find that such an anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control wave propagation and construct almost perfect bending waveguides with a high transmission rate (>95%). This interesting effect originates in the power flow redistribution by the surface waves on the input and output interfaces, which smoothly matches with the propagating modes inside the metamaterial waveguide. We also find that waves in such anisotropic epsilon-near-zero materials can be reflected by small-sized perf…
A Fabry-Perot like interferometer with two microwaveguide adaptors as reflectors creates a passive dielectric medium with a negative group delay time due to polarization shift. A rotational strain of the polarization vector by one of the adaptors is coupled with a drastic negative group velocity. The adapted rectangular and circular waveguides have the same dispersion. The input rectangular waveguide mode is linearly polarized, whereas the basic mode of the adapted circular waveguide is circularly polarized. A 667 wavelengths long circular waveguide connects the input with the output adaptor. …
We present a two-waveguide coupler which, realizes complete achromatic all-optical switching. The coupling of the waveguides has a hyperbolic-secant shape while the phase mismatch has a sign flip at the maximum of the coupling. We derive an analytic solution for the electric field propagation using coupled mode theory and show that the light switching is robust again small-to-moderate variations in the coupling and phase mismatch. Thus, we realize an achromatic light switching between the two waveguides. We further consider the extended case of three coupled waveguides in an array and pay spec…
Employing counterdiabatic shortcut to adiabaticity (STA), we design shorter and robust achromatic two- and three- waveguide couplers. We assume that the phase mismatch between the waveguides has a sign flip at maximum coupling, while the coupling between the waveguides has a smooth spatial shape. We show that the presented coupler operates as a complete achromatic optical switch for two coupled waveguides and as an equal superposition beam splitter for three coupled waveguides. An important feature of our devices is that they do not require larger coupling strength as compared to previous desi…
We investigate a short (~1.5μm) partially-corrugated tapered waveguide structure for mode coupling from a silicon micro-slab to a plasmonic nano-gap waveguide at the optical communication frequency. More than 80% transmission efficiency is reported numerically for the first time. The result indicates that the corrugated waveguide structure should not only be helpful for realizing full on-chip silicon plasmonic devices but also a good choice for mode coupling enhancement from dielectric waveguides to plasmonic waveguides. Meanwhile, we point out that the coupling mechanism reported here is diff…
Topological corner state (TCS) and topological edge state (TES) have provided new approaches to control the propagation of light. In this Letter, TCCWS is proposed in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC), which possesses strong optical localization, high quality factor and excellent robustness compared with the conventional coupled cavity-waveguide system (CCCWS). We demonstrate second order optical nonlinearity in aluminum nitride on insulator substrates. Using sputter-deposited aluminum nitride thin films we realize nanophotonic waveguides coupled to micro-ring resonators that simultaneously support cavity resonant modes for both visible and IR light. By using phase matched ring resonators, we achieve efficient second-harmonic generation and are able to generate up to 0.5uW of visible light on the chip with a conversion efficiency of -46dB. From the measured response we obtain a second order non-linear susceptibility (\c{hi}2) of 4.7pm/V. Our platform…
Planar nanophotonic structures enable broadband, near-unity coupling of emission from quantum dots embedded within, thereby realizing ideal singe-photon sources. The efficiency and coherence of the single-photon source is limited by charge noise, which results in the broadening of the emission spectrum. We report suppression of the noise by fabricating photonic crystal waveguides in a gallium arsenide membrane containing quantum dots embedded in a $p$-$i$-$n$ diode. Local electrical contacts in the vicinity of the waveguides minimize the leakage current and allow fast electrical control ($\appr…
Optical amplifiers are essential in numerous photonic applications. Parametric amplifiers, relying on a nonlinear material to create amplification, are uniquely promising as they can amplify without generating excess noise. Here, we demonstrate amplification based on the 3rd order nonlinearity in a single chip, while in addition reporting a noise figure significantly below the conventional quantum limit when operated in phase-sensitive mode. Our results show the potential of nanophotonics for realizing continuous-wave parametric amplification that can enable applications in optical communicati…
At a fixed frequency, a general wave field in an open optical waveguide is a sum of finite number of guided modes and an integral of radiation modes. Most studies on open lossless dielectric waveguides are concerned with regular guided modes which are confined around the waveguide core, have a real propagation constant, and propagate along the waveguide axis without attenuation. However, there may be guided modes with a complex propagation constant even though the waveguide consists of lossless isotropic dielectric materials, and they are the so-called complex modes. The complex modes are prop…
Recently, high-order topological insulators (HOTIs), accompanied by topologically nontrivial boundary states with codimension larger than one, have been extensively explored because of unconventional bulk-boundary correspondences. As a novel type of HOTIs, very recent works have explored the square-root HOTIs, where the topological nontrivial nature of bulk bands stems from the square of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 2D square-root HOTIs in photonic waveguide arrays written in glass using femtosecond laser direct-write techniques. Edge and corner states are clea…
Realizing an on-chip reconfigurable source of path-entangled photons is of critical importance for the advancement of quantum information processing and networking. Achieving this goal has proven challenging to date. We present an on-chip scheme for the deterministic creation of co-propagating or counter-propagating path-entangled photon pairs that can be routed in multiple configurations by tuning a classical parameter. The simplest manifestation of this approach makes use of two \textit{coupled} waveguides: a \textit{nonlinear} waveguide that produces photon pairs via spontaneous parametric …
A method for realizing asymmetric (one-way) transmission of discretized light in modulated, linear and purely passive optical lattices is suggested, which exploits the idea of unidirectional coherent perfect absorption. The system consists of a linear photonic lattice of coupled resonators or waveguides, side coupled to a chain of lossy elements, in which light can avoid the occupation of the dissipative sites when propagating in one way, but not in the opposite one. Non-reciprocity requires modulation of the resonator/waveguide parameters, realizing a dissipative optical Aharonov-Bohm diode w…

The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts …
We present design guidelines for realizing side-coupled photonic crystal nanobeam (PCN) cavities with efficient coupling to low order resonances through adjusting the overlap of the PCN cavity mode and a feeding bus waveguide in both physical and k-space. We show that optimal side-coupled configurations function at a non-zero k-vector offset between the bus waveguide and PCN cavity modes. The straightforward design of side-coupled PCNs with high contrast resonances opens the door to their practical implementation in multiplexed, on-chip photonic devices.
Time reversal is one of the most intriguing yet elusive wave phenomenon of major interest in different areas of classical and quantum physics. Time reversal requires in principle to flip the sign of the Hamiltonian of the system, leading to a revival of the initial state (Loschmidt echo). Here it is shown that Loschmidt echo of photons can be observed in an optical setting without resorting to reversal of the Hamiltonian. We consider photonic propagation in a binary waveguide lattice and show that, by exchanging the two sublattices after some propagation distance, a Loschmidt echo can be obser…
A bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a localized state of an open structure with access to radiation channels, yet it remains highly confined with, in theory, infinite lifetime and quality factor. There have been many realizations of such exceptional states in dielectric systems without loss. However, realizing BICs in systems with losses such as plasmonics remains a challenge. In this Letter, we explore the possibility of realizing BICs in a hybrid plasmonic-photonic structure consisting of a plasmonic grating coupled to a dielectric optical waveguide. The plasmonic-photonic system support…
We overcome the difficulty in realizing a monolithic waveguide-coupled microring laser integrated on erbium-doped thin film lithium niobate (Er: TFLN) using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technique. We demonstrate an integrated single-frequency microring laser operating around 1531 nm wavelength. The PLACE technique, enabling integrated Er: TFLN photonics with low propagation loss, can thus be used to realize low cost mass production of monolithic on-chip microlasers with applications ranging from optical communication and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) to precis…
We develop a technique for realizing lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides of a multi-centimeter-length with a propagation loss as low as 0.027 dB/cm. Our technique relies on patterning a chromium (Cr) thin film coated on the top surface of LNOI into a hard mask with a femtosecond laser followed by the chemo-mechanical polishing for structuring the LNOI into the waveguides. The surface roughness on the waveguides is determined to be 0.452 nm with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The approach is compatible with other surface patterning technologies such as optical and electron beam li…
Circularly polarized light plays a key role in many applications including spectroscopy, microscopy, and control of atomic systems. Particularly in the latter, high polarization purity is often required. Integrated technologies for atomic control are progressing rapidly, but while integrated photonics can generate fields with pure linear polarization, integrated generation of highly pure circular polarization states has not been addressed. Here, we show that waveguide microring resonators, perturbed with azimuthal gratings and thereby emitting beams carrying optical orbital angular momentum, c…
Thermal tuning of the optical refractive index in the waveguides to control light phase accumulation is essential in photonic integrated systems and applications. In silicon photonics, microheaters are mainly realized by metal wires or highly doped silicon lines placed at a safe distance (1um) from the waveguide to avoid considerable optical loss. However, this poses a significant limitation for heating efficiency because of the excessive free-carrier loss when a heater is brought closer to the optical path. In this work, we present a new concept of using optically transparent 2D semiconductor…

We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on the modal characteristics of the BSCCO plasmonic slot waveguide between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. In addition, we inv…
Slow light propagation in structured materials is a highly promising approach for realizing on-chip integrated photonic devices based on enhanced optical nonlinearities. One of the most successful research avenues consists in engineering the band dispersion of light-guiding photonic crystal (PC) structures. The primary goal of such devices is to achieve slow-light operation over the largest possible bandwidth, with large group index, minimal index dispersion, and constant transmission spectrum. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of to date record high GBP in silicon-based couple…
Silicon waveguides have enabled large-scale manipulation and processing of near-infrared optical signals on chip. Yet, expanding the bandwidth of guided waves to other frequencies would further increase the functionality of silicon as a photonics platform. Frequency multiplexing by integrating additional architectures is one approach to the problem, but this is challenging to design and integrate within the existing form factor due to scaling with the free-space wavelength. Here, we demonstrate that a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/silicon hybrid waveguide can enable dual-band operation at both…
The mechanical properties of light have found widespread use in the manipulation of gas-phase atoms and ions, helping create new states of matter and realize complex quantum interactions. The field of cavity-optomechanics strives to scale this interaction to much larger, even human-sized mechanical objects. Going beyond the canonical Fabry-Perot cavity with a movable mirror, here we explore a new paradigm in which multiple cavity-optomechanical elements are wired together to form optomechanical circuits. Using a pair of optomechanical cavities coupled together via a phonon waveguide we demonst…
Artificial magnetic field in electromagnetism is becoming an emerging way as a robust control of light based on its geometric and topological nature. Other than demonstrating topological photonics properties in the diffractive regime using photonic crystals or arrays of waveguides, it will be of great interest if similar manipulations can be done simply in the long wavelength limit, in which only a few optical parameters can be used to describe the system, making the future optical component design much easier. Here, by designing and fabricating a metamaterial with split dispersion surface, we…
Quantum information is typically encoded in the state of a qubit that is decoupled from the environment. In contrast, waveguide quantum electrodynamics studies qubits coupled to a mode continuum, exposing them to a loss channel and causing quantum information to be lost before coherent operations can be performed. Here we restore coherence by realizing a dark state that exploits symmetry properties and interactions between four qubits. Dark states decouple from the waveguide and are thus a valuable resource for quantum information but also come with a challenge: they cannot be controlled by th…
Integrating solid-state quantum emitters with photonic circuits is essential for realizing large-scale quantum photonic processors. Negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV$^-$) centers in diamond have emerged as promising candidates for quantum emitters because of their excellent optical and spin properties including narrow-linewidth emission and long spin coherence times. SnV$^-$ centers need to be incorporated in optical waveguides for efficient on-chip routing of the photons they generate. However, such integration has yet to be realized. In this Letter, we demonstrate the coupling of SnV$^-$ c…
Synthetic photonic lattice with temporally controlled potentials is a versatile platform for realizing wave dynamics associated with physical areas of optics and quantum physics. Here, discrete optics in one-dimensionally synthetic photonic lattice is investigated systematically, in which the light behavior is highly similar to those in evanescently coupled one-dimensional discrete waveguides. Such a synthetic dimension is constructed with position-dependent periodic effective gauge fields based on Aharonov-Bohm effect arising from the phase accumulations of the fiber loops. By tuning the phas…
Planar nanostructures allow near-ideal extraction of emission from a quantum emitter embedded within, thereby realizing deterministic single-photon sources. Such a source can be transformed into M single-photon sources by implementing active temporal-to-spatial mode demultiplexing. We report on the realization of such a demultiplexed source based on a quantum dot embedded in a nanophotonic waveguide. Efficient outcoupling (>60%) from the waveguide into a single mode optical fiber is obtained with high-efficiency grating couplers. As a proof-of-concept, active demultiplexing into M=4 spatial ch…
Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of non-Hermitian operators where, in addition to the eigenvalues, corresponding eigenmodes become degenerate. Classical and quantum photonic systems with EPs have attracted tremendous attention due to their unusual properties, topological features, and an enhanced sensitivity that depends on the order of the EP, i.e. the number of degenerate eigenmodes. Yet, experimentally engineering higher-order EPs in classical or quantum domains remains an open challenge due to the stringent symmetry constraints that are required for the coalescence of multiple eig…
Electromagnetic waves propagating, at finite speeds, in conventional wave-guiding structures are reflected by discontinuities and decay in lossy regions. In this Letter, we drastically modify this typical guided-wave behavior by combining concepts from non-Hermitian physics and topological photonics. To this aim, we theoretically study, for the first time, the possibility of realizing an exceptional point between \emph{coupled topological modes in a non-Hermitian non-reciprocal waveguide}. Our proposed system is composed of oppositely-biased gyrotropic materials (e.g., biased plasmas or graphe…
The singlemode condition is one of the most important design rules for optical waveguides in guided-wave optics. The reason following the singlemode condition is that higher-order modes might be excited and thus introduce some undesired mode-mismatching loss as well as inter-mode crosstalk when light propagates along an optical waveguide beyond the singlemode regime. As a result, multimode photonic waveguides are usually not allowed. In this paper, we propose the concept of silicon photonics beyond the singlemode regime, developed with low-loss and low-crosstalk light propagation in multimode …
