Floquet topological photonic insulators, whose light transport properties are dictated by the periodic drive sequence of the lattice, provide more flexibility for controlling and trapping light than undriven topological insulators, which can enable novel nonlinear optics applications in topological photonics. Here, we employ a novel resonance effect called Floquet Defect Mode Resonance in a 2D silicon Floquet microring lattice to demonstrate resonance-enhanced frequency generation by four-wave mixing of Floquet bulk modes in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity. The compact, cavity-less resonance mode, induced through a periodic perturbation of the lattice drive sequence, has the largest reported Q-factor for a topological resonator of ~10^5 with low group velocity dispersion, which enables efficient broadband frequency generation over several Floquet-Brillouin zones of the Floquet topological insulator. We achieved wavelength conversion over 10.1 nm spectral range with an average enhancement of 12.5 dB in the conversion efficiency due to the Floquet Defect Mode Resonance. Our work could lead to robust light sources generated directly on a topologically-protected photonic platform.

Integrated optical isolators have been a longstanding challenge for photonic integrated circuits (PIC). An ideal integrated optical isolator for PIC should be made by a monolithic process, have a small footprint, exhibit broadband and polarization-diverse operation, and be compatible with multiple materials platforms. Despite significant progress, the optical isolators reported so far do not meet all these requirements. In this article we present monolithically integrated broadband magneto-optical isolators on silicon and silicon nitride (SiN) platforms operating for both TE and TM modes with …
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband, fabrication tolerant, CMOS compatible compact silicon waveguide taper (34.2 um) in silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides. A single taper design has a broadband operation with coupling efficiency >70% over 700 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; >100 nm change in the taper and end waveguide width varies the taper transmission by <5%. The footprint of the device i.e. taper along with the linear gratings is ~ 442 m2…
Visible and near-infrared spectrum photonic integrated circuits are quickly becoming a key technology to address the scaling challenges in quantum information and biosensing. Thus far, integrated photonic platforms in this spectral range have lacked integrated photodetectors. Here, we report the first silicon nitride-on-silicon waveguide photodetectors that are monolithically integrated in a visible light photonic platform on silicon. Owing to a leaky-wave silicon nitride-on-silicon design, the devices achieved a high external quantum efficiency of > 60% across a record wavelength span from $λ…

Numerical computation results show the feasibility for broadband operation over 40 GHz bandwidth and full 360 degree radiofrequency phase-shift with a modest voltage excursion of 0.12 volt.
A novel design of large bandwidth, fabrication tolerant, CMOS-compatible compact tapers (15 um) have been proposed and experimentally demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator. The proposed taper along with linear grating couplers for spot-size conversion exhibits no degradation in the coupling efficiency compared to a standard focusing grating in 1550 nm band. A single taper design has a broadband operation over 600 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The proposed compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; 80 nm change in the taper width and 200 nm in end waveguide width varie…
Programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have recently gained significant interest due to their potential in creating next-generation technologies ranging from artificial neural networks and microwave photonics to quantum information processing. The fundamental building block of such programmable PICs is a tunable 2 x 2 switch, traditionally controlled by the thermo-optic or free-carrier dispersion. Yet, these implementations are power-hungry, volatile, and have a large footprint (typically > 100 um). Therefore, a truly 'set-and-forget' type 2 x 2 switch with zero static power consumpt…
We demonstrate an ultra-compact waveguide taper in Silicon Nitride platform. The proposed taper provides a coupling-efficiency of 95% at a length of 19.5 um in comparison to the standard linear taper of length 50 um that connects a 10 um wide waveguide to a 1 um wide photonic wire. The taper has a spectral response > 75% spanning over 800 nm and resilience to fabrication variations; >200 nm change in taper and end waveguide width varies transmission by <5%. We experimentally demonstrate taper insertion loss of <0.1 dB/transition for a taper as short as 19.5 um, and reduces the footprint of the…
Microresonator frequency combs, or microcombs, have gained wide appeal for their rich nonlinear physics and wide range of applications. Stoichiometric silicon nitride films grown via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), in particular, are widely used in chip-integrated Kerr microcombs. Critical to such devices is the ability to control the microresonator dispersion, which has contributions from both material refractive index dispersion and geometric confinement. Here, we show that modifications to the LPCVD growth conditions, specifically the ratio of the gaseous precursors, has a s…
Silicon nitride based photonic integrated circuits offer a wavelength operation window in the near infrared down to visible light, which makes them attractive for life science applications. However, they exhibit significantly different behavior in comparison with better-established silicon on insulator counterparts due to the lower index contrast. Among the most important building blocks in photonic integrated circuits are broadband couplers with a defined coupling ratio. We present silicon nitride broadband asymmetric directional coupler designs with 50/50 and 90/10 splitting ratios with a ce…

We optimize a partially aperiodic structure using a random walk algorithm and demonstrate an experimental broadband absorption of 4.9 times that of a periodic array.
We designed, fabricated and characterized a flat multi-level diffractive lens (MDL) comprised of only silicon with diameter = 15.2mm, focal length of 19mm, and operating over the longwave infrared (LWIR) spectrum of 8um to 14um. We experimentally demonstrated field of view of 46deg, depth of focus >7mm and wavelength-averaged Strehl ratio of 0.46. All these metrics were comparable to those of a conventional refractive lens. The active device thickness is only 8um and its weight (including the silicon substrate) is less than 0.2g.
Emerging technologies based on tailorable interactions between photons and phonons promise new capabilities ranging from high-fidelity microwave signal processing to non-reciprocal optics and quantum state control. While such light-sound couplings have been studied in a variety of physical systems, many implementations rely on non-standard materials and fabrication schemes that are challenging to co-implement with standard integrated photonic circuitry. Notably, despite significant advances in integrated electro-optic modulators, related acousto-optic modulator concepts have remained relativel…
In this paper, four easy-to-fabricate graphene-based Si waveguide modulators are presented to overcome the strong polarization dependency of graphene-based modulators. The modulation features of two newly proposed structures, i.e. two graphene-based buried silicon waveguides in addition to two standard ridge silicon waveguides at the telecommunication wavelength of $λ=1.55 μm$ are studied. The results show that for certain widths of each waveguide (the height is constant), the amplitude and phase modulations clearly become polarization-insensitive. The amplitude modulation depths for both the …
Broadband mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy applications could greatly benefit from today's well-developed, highly scalable silicon photonics technology; however, this platform lacks broadband transparency due to its reliance on absorptive silicon dioxide cladding. Alternative cladding materials have been studied, but the challenge lies in decreasing losses while avoiding complex fabrication techniques. Here, in contrast to traditional assumptions, we show that silicon photonics can achieve low-loss propagation in the mid-IR from 3 - 6 um wavelength, thus providing a highly scalable, well-dev…
Antireflection with broadband and wide angle properties is important for a wide range of applications on photovoltaic cells and display. The SiOx shell layer provides a natural antireflection from air to the Si core absorption layer. The graded index structure from the randomly oriented core-shell (Air/SiOx/Si) nanowires may provide a potential avenue to realize a broa…
Instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) of microwave signals is a fundamental functionality for applications ranging from electronic warfare to biomedical technology. In this work, we exploit the low loss of a 35 cm long, thick silicon waveguide, to efficiently harness Kerr nonlinearity, and demonstrate the fir…
Broadband mid-infrared light sources are highly desired for wide-ranging applications that span free-space communications to spectroscopy. In recent years, silicon has attracted great interest as a platform for nonlinear optical wavelength conversion in this region, owing to its low losses (linear and nonlinear) and high stability. However, most research in this area has made use of small core waveguides fabricated from the silicon-on-insulator platform, which suffer from high absorption losses of the silica cladding, limiting their ability to generate light beyond 3 $μ$m. Here we design and d…
The availability of high-frequency pulsed emitters in the $2-2.5\,μ$m wavelength range paved the way for a wealth of new applications in ultrafast spectroscopy, free-space and fiber-optical communications, surveillance and recognition, artificial intelligence, and medical imaging. However, developing these emerging technologies and their large-scale use depend on the availability of high-speed, low-noise, and cost-effective photodetectors. With this perspective, here we demonstrate GeSn photodiodes grown on silicon wafers featuring a high broadband operation covering the extended-SWIR range wi…
Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a:Si-H) has recently been recognized as a highly nonlinear CMOS compatible photonic platform. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a supercontinuum (SC) spanning over 500 nm in a-Si:H photonic wire waveguide at telecommunication wavelengths using femtosecond input pulse with energy lower than 5 pJ. Numerical modeling of pulse propagation in the waveguide, based on the experimentally characterized dispersion profile, shows that the supercontinuum is the result of soliton fission and dispersive wave generation. It is demonstrated that the SC is highly c…
Recently developed classes of monocrystalline silicon solar microcells (u-cell) can be assembled into modules with characteristics (i.e., mechanically flexible forms, compact concentrator designs, and high-voltage outputs) that would be impossible to achieve using conventional, wafer-based approaches. Tapered and dispersion managed (DM) silicon nanophotonic waveguides are investigated for the generation of optimal ultra broadband supercontinuum (SC). DM waveguides are structures showing a longitudinally dependent group velocity dispersion that results from the variation of the waveguide width with the propagation distance. We present a one-dimensional coupled ring resonator lattice exhibiting a variant of the non- Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) that we call the anomalous Floquet NHSE. Unlike existing approaches to achieving the NHSE by engineering gain and loss on different ring segments, our design uses fixed on-site gain or loss in each ring. The anomalous Floquet NHSE is marked by the existence of skin modes at every value of the Floquet quasienergy, allowing for broadband asymmetric transmission. Varying the gain/loss induces a non-Hermitian topological phase transition, reversing the localization direction of…
We experimentally demonstrate wide-band (>100 THz) frequency down-conversion of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser to the mid-infrared (MIR) using four-wave-mixing (FWM) in photonic-chip silicon-nitride waveguides. The engineered dispersion in the nanophotonic geometry, along with the wide transparency range of silicon nitride, enables large-detuning FWM phase-matching and results in tunable MIR from 2.6-3.6 um on a single chip with 100-pJ-scale pump-pulse energies. Additionally, we observe > 20 dB broadband parametric gain for the NIR pulses when the FWM proce…

Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the search for exotic topological states, which usually exist at an interface between lattices with differing topological invariants according to the bulk-edge correspondence. Here, we show a new finding of topological states localized at the interface between two gauge-shifted Floquet photonic lattices, despite the same topological order across the entire structure. The quasienergy band structures reveal that these new interface modes belong to the Floquet π modes, which are further found to enable a robust one-way propagation thanks to the flexible con…
