Hermitian Hamiltonians with time-periodic coefficients can be analyzed via Floquet theory, and have been extensively used for engineering Floquet Hamiltonians in standard quantum simulators. Generalized to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, time-periodicity offers avenues to engineer the landscape of Floquet quasi-energies across the complex plane. We investigate two-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with coefficients that have different periodicities using Floquet theory. By analytical and numerical calculations, we obtain their regions of stability, defined by real Floquet quasi-energies, and contours of exceptional point (EP) degeneracies. We extend our analysis to study the phases that accompany the cyclic changes. Our results demonstrate that time-periodic, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians generate a rich landscape of stable and unstable regions.
We investigate a two-level spin system based anti-parity-time (anti-$\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric qubit and study its decoherence as well as entanglement entropy properties. We compare our findings with that of the corresponding $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and Hermitian qubits. First we consider the time-dependent Dyson map to find the exact analytical dynamics for a general non-Hermitian qubit system coupled with a bath, then we specialize it to the case of the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit. We find that the decoherence function for the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit decays slower than th…
Non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$)-symmetric systems exhibit novel quantum properties and have attracted increasing interest. Although many counterintuitive phenomena in $\mathcal{PT}$- and $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems were previously studied, coherence flow has been rarely investigated. Here, we experimentally demonstrate single-qubit coherence flow in $\mathcal{PT}$- and $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems using an optical setup. In the symmetry unbroken regime, we observe different periodic oscillations of coherence. Particularly, we observe…
Non-Hermitian systems, with symmetric or antisymmetric Hamiltonians under the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations, can have entirely real eigenvalues. This fact has led to surprising discoveries such as loss-induced lasing and topological energy transfer. A merit of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ systems is free of gain, but in recent efforts on making anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ devices, nonlinearity is still required. Here, counterintuitively, we show how to achieve anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in a linear device by spinning a lossy resonator. Compared with a Hermitian spinning…
Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry give rise to exceptional points (EPs) with intriguing properties related to, e.g., chiral transport and enhanced sensitivity, due to the coalescence of eigenvectors. In this paper, we propose a powerful and easily computable tool, based on the Hilbert-Schmidt speed (HSS), which does not require the diagonalization of the evolved density matrix, to detect exactly the EPs and hence the critical behavior of the (anti-)$\mathcal{PT}\!-$symmetric systems, especially high-dimensional ones. Our theoretic…
In the past years, many efforts have been made to study various noteworthy phenomena in both parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) symmetric systems. However, entanglement dynamics in $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems has not previously been investigated in both theory and experiments. Here, we investigate the entanglement evolution of two qubits in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric system. In the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric unbroken regime, our theoretical simulations demonstrate the periodic oscillations of entanglement when each qubit evolves identically, while the no…
Light propagation in systems with anti-Hermitian coupling, described by a spinor-like wave equation, provides a general route for the observation of anti parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$ ) symmetry in optics. Remarkably, under a different definition of parity operator, a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can be found as well in such systems. Such symmetries are ubiquitous in nonlinear optical interactions and are exemplified by considering modulation instability in optical fibers and optical parametric amplification.
Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry have attracted a wide range of interest owing to their unique characteristics and counterintuitive phenomena. One of the most extraordinary features is the presence of an exception point (EP), across which a phase transition with spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry takes place. We implement a Floquet Hamiltonian of a single qubit with anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by periodically driving a dissipative quantum system of a single trapped ion. With stroboscopic emission and quantum state tomog…
We consider tight-binding single particle lattice Hamiltonians which are invariant under an antiunitary antisymmetry: the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. The Hermitian Hamiltonians are defined on $d$-dimensional non-Bravais lattices. For an odd number of sublattices, the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry protects a flatband at energy $E = 0$. We derive the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ constraints on the Hamiltonian and use them to generate examples of generalized kagome networks in two and three lattice dimensions. Furthermore, we show that the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry persists in the presence of uniform …
Non-Hermitian systems with anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry have revealed rich physics beyond conventional systems. Here, we study optomechanics in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric spinning resonator and show that, by tuning the rotating speed to approach the exceptional point (EP) or the non-Hermitian spectral degeneracy, nonreciprocal light transmission with a high isolation ratio can be realized. Accompanying this process, nonreciprocal group delay or advance is also identified in the vicinity of EP. Our work sheds new light on manipulating laser propagation with optomechanical EP de…
Non-Hermitian systems can exhibit unconventional spectral singularities called exceptional points (EPs). Various EP sensors have been fabricated in recent years, showing strong spectral responses to external signals. Here we propose how to achieve a nonlinear anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) gyroscope by spinning an optical resonator. We show that, in the absence of any nonlinearity, the sensitivity or optical mode splitting of the linear device can be magnified up to 3 orders than that of the conventional device without EPs. Remarkably, the $\mathcal{APT}$ symmetry can be broken when includ…

The emergence of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry has greatly enriched our study of symmetry-enabled non-Hermitian physics, but the realization of quantum $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry faces an intrinsic issue of unavoidable symmetry-breaking Langevin noises. Here we construct a quantum pseudo-anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ (pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry in a two-mode bosonic system without involving Langevin noises. We show that the spontaneous pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$ symmetry breaking leads to an exceptional point, across which there is a transition between different types of quantum squeezing dynamic…
We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of $N=2l+1$ waveguides and exhibiting parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on $N$th-order exceptional points (EPs). The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a …
In this paper, based on a one-dimensional non-Hermitian spin model with $\mathcal{RT}$-invariant term, we study the non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. By using the high-order perturbation method, an effective pseudo-spin model is obtained to describe non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states, which are precisely consistent with the numerical calculations. We found that there may exist effective (anti) $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for the effective pseudo-spin model of the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. In particular, there exists s…
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry plays an important role both in non-Hermitian and topological systems. In non-Hermitian systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can lead to an entirely real energy spectrum, while in topological systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry gives rise to stable and protected Dirac points. Here, we study a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system which is both non-Hermitian and topological, namely a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Dirac semimetal with non-Hermitian perturbations in three dimensions. We find that, in general, there are only two types of symmetry allowed non-Hermitian perturbatio…
In this article, we define a new mathematical object, called a pair $D=\left(A,C\right)$ of anti-commutation matrices (ACMP) based on the anti-commutation relation $a^†_{i}a_{j} + a_{j}a^†_{i} = δ_{ij}$ applied to the scalar product between the many-body wavefunctions. This ACMP explicitly separates the different levels of correlation. The one-body correlations are defined by a ACMP $D^0=\left(A^0,C^0\right)$ and the two-body ones by a set of $n$ ACMPs $D^i=\left(A^i,C^i\right)$ where $n$ is the number of states. We show that we can have a compact and exact parametrization with $n^4$ parameter…
