In this paper, based on a one-dimensional non-Hermitian spin model with $\mathcal{RT}$-invariant term, we study the non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. By using the high-order perturbation method, an effective pseudo-spin model is obtained to describe non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states, which are precisely consistent with the numerical calculations. We found that there may exist effective (anti) $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for the effective pseudo-spin model of the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. In particular, there exists spontaneous (anti) $\mathcal{PT}$ -symmetry breaking for the topological degenerate ground states with tunable parameters in external fields. We also found that even a very tiny imaginary external field applied will drive $\mathcal{PT}$ phase transition.
A non-hermitian deformation of the one-dimensional transverse Ising model is shown to have the property of quasi-hermiticity. The transverse Ising chain is obtained from the starting non-hermitian Hamiltonian through a similarity transformation. Consequently, both the models have identical eigen-spectra, although the eigen-functions are different. The metric in the Hilbert space, which makes the non-hermitian model unitary and ensures the completeness of states, has been constructed explicitly. Although the longitudinal correlation functions are identical for both the non-hermitian and the her…
As a model of two thermally excited flux liquids connected by a weak link, we study the effect of a single line defect on vortex filaments oriented parallel to the surface of a thin planar superconductor. When the applied field is tilted relative to the line defect, the physics is described by a nonhermitian Luttinger liquid of interacting quantum bosons in one spatial dimension with a point defect. We analyze this problem using a combination of analytic and numerical density matrix renormalization group methods, uncovering a delicate interplay between enhancement of pinning due to Luttinger l…
We introduce a generalized ensemble of nonhermitian matrices interpolating between the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, the Ginibre ensemble and the Poisson ensemble. The joint eigenvalue distribution of this model is obtained by means of an extension of the Itzykson-Zuber formula to general complex matrices. Its correlation functions are studied both in the case of weak nonhermiticity and in the case of strong nonhermiticity. In the weak nonhermiticity limit we show that the spectral correlations in the bulk of the spectrum display critical statistics: the asymptotic linear behavior of the number v…
We study a quantum Ising chain with tailored bulk dissipation, which can be mapped onto a non-Hermitian Ashkin-Teller model. By exploiting the Kohmoto-den Nijs-Kadanoff transformation, we further map it to a staggered XXZ spin chain with pure-imaginary anisotropy parameters. This allows us to study the eigenstates of the original Liouvillian in great detail. We show that the steady state in each parity sector is a completely mixed state. The uniqueness of each is proved rigorously. We then study the decay modes on the self-dual line corresponding to the uniform XXZ chain and obtain an exact fo…
We study the connection between the cumulants of a time-integrated observable of a quantum system and the PT-symmetry properties of the non-Hermitian deformation of the Hamiltonian from which the generating function of these cumulants is obtained. This non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can display regimes of broken and of unbroken PT-symmetry, depending on the parameters of the problem and on the counting field that sets the strength of the non-Hermitian perturbation. This in turn determines the analytic structure of the long-time cumulant generating function (CGF) for the time-integrated observable. …
We study the behavior of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) in a non-Hermitian quantum Ising system. We show that the OTOC can diagnose not only the ground state exceptional point, which hosts the Yang-Lee edge singularity, but also the \textit{dynamical} exceptional point at the excited state. We find that the evolution of the OTOC in the parity-time symmetric phase can be divided into two stages: in the short-time stage, the OTOC oscillates periodically, and when the parameter is near the ground state exceptional point, this oscillation behavior can be described by both the scaling th…
We investigate a lattice version of the Yang-Lee model which is characterized by a non-Hermitian quantum spin chain Hamiltonian. We propose a new way to implement PT-symmetry on the lattice, which serves to guarantee the reality of the spectrum in certain regions of values of the coupling constants. In that region of unbroken PT-symmetry we construct a Dyson map, a metric operator and find the Hermitian counterpart of the Hamiltonian for small values of the number of sites, both exactly and perturbatively. Besides the standard perturbation theory about the Hermitian part of the Hamiltonian, we…
We develop the perturbation theory of the fidelity susceptibility in biorthogonal bases for arbitrary interacting non-Hermitian many-body systems with real eigenvalues. The quantum criticality in the non-Hermitian transverse field Ising chain is investigated by the second derivative of ground-state energy and the ground-state fidelity susceptibility. We show that the system undergoes a second-order phase transition with the Ising universal class by numerically computing the critical points and the critical exponents from the finite-size scaling theory. Interestingly, our results indicate that …
We study the matrix elements of few-body observables, focusing on the off-diagonal ones, in the eigenstates of the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model. By resolving all symmetries, we relate the onset of quantum chaos to the structure of the matrix elements. In particular, we show that a general result of the theory of random matrices, namely, the value 2 of the ratio of variances (diagonal to off-diagonal) of the matrix elements of Hermitian operators, occurs in the quantum chaotic regime. Furthermore, we explore the behavior of the off-diagonal matrix elements of observables as a fu…
We investigate measurement-induced phase transitions in the Quantum Ising chain coupled to a monitoring environment. We compare two different limits of the measurement problem, the stochastic quantum-state diffusion protocol corresponding to infinite small jumps per unit of time and the no-click limit, corresponding to post-selection and described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In both cases we find a remarkably similar phenomenology as the measurement strength $γ$ is increased, namely a sharp transition from a critical phase with logarithmic scaling of the entanglement to an area-law phase, …
Thermal density matrices can be described by a pure quantum state within the thermofield formalism. Here we show how to construct a class of Hamiltonians realizing a thermofield state as their ground state. These Hamiltonians are frustration-free, and can be Hermitian or non-Hermitian, allowing one to use ground-state methods to understand the thermodynamic properties of the system. In particular this approach gives an explicit mapping of thermal phase transitions into quantum phase transitions. In the non-Hermitian case, the quantum phase transition is not accompanied by a change in the spect…
We study a cluster Ising model with non-Hermitian external field which can be exactly solved in the language of free fermions. By investigating the second derivative of energy density and fidelity, the possible new critical points are tentatively located. String order parameter and staggered magnetization are then detected to reveal emergent phases of brand new characteristics. To categorize the exotic phases and phase transitions induced by non-Hermiticity, we calculate the variation mode of spin correlation function as well as string parameter, which characterize the emergent phases and crit…

We give a thorough Biorthonormal Matrix-Product-State (BMPS) analysis of the Transfer-Matrix Renormalization-Group (TMRG) for non-Hermitian matrices in the thermodynamic limit. The BMPS is built on a dual series of reduced biorthonormal bases for the left and right Perron states of a non-Hermitian matrix. We propose two alternative infinite-size Biorthonormal TMRG (iBTMRG) algorithms and compare their numerical performance in both finite and infinite systems. We show that both iBTMRGs produce a dual infinite-BMPS (iBMPS) which are translationally invariant in the thermodynamic limit. We also d…
We show that a class of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians realizing the Yang-Lee edge singularity exhibits an entanglement transition in the long-time steady state evolved under the Hamiltonian. Such a transition is induced by a level crossing triggered by the critical point associated with the Yang-Lee singularity and hence is first-order in nature. At the transition, the entanglement entropy of the steady state jumps discontinuously from a volume-law to an area-law scaling. We exemplify this mechanism using a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with additional imag…

We obtain in a closed form the 1/N^2 contribution to the free energy of the two Hermitian N\times N random matrix model with non symmetric quartic potential. From this result, we calculate numerically the Yang-Lee zeros of the 2D Ising model on dynamical random graphs with the topology of a torus up to n=16 vertices. They are found to be located on the unit circle on the complex fugacity plane. In order to include contributions of even higher topologies we calculated analytically the nonperturbative (sum over all genus) partition function of the model Z_n = \sum_{h=0}^{\infty} \frac{Z_n^{(h)}}…
The spin one-half Heisenberg chain with $U_q[SU(2)]$ symmetry is studied via density-matrix renormalization. Ground-state energy and $q$-symmetric correlation functions are calculated for the non-hermitian case $q=\exp(iπ/(r+1))$ with integer $r$. This gives bulk and surface exponents for (para)fermionic correlations in the related Ising and Potts models. The case of real $q$ corresponding to a diffusion problem is treated analytically.
PT-symmetric Hamiltonians and transfer matrices arise naturally in statistical mechanics. These classical and quantum models often require the use of complex or negative weights and thus fall outside of the conventional equilibrium statistical mechanics of Hermitian systems. PT-symmetric models form a natural class where the partition function is necessarily real, but not necessarily positive. The correlation functions of these models display a much richer set of behaviors than Hermitian systems, displaying sinusoidally-modulated exponential decay, as in a dense fluid, or even sinusoidal modul…
We introduce a new a family of $Z(N)$ multispins quantum chains with a free-fermionic ($N=2$) or free-parafermionic ($N>2$) eigenspectrum. The models have $(p+1)$ interacting spins ($p=1,2,\dots$), being Hermitian in the $Z(2)$ (Ising) case and non-Hermitian for $N>2$. We construct a set of mutually commuting charges that allows us to derive the eigenenergies in terms of the roots of polynomials generated by a recurrence relation of order $(p+1)$. In the critical limit we identify these polynomials with certain hypergeometric polynomials ${}_{p+1}F_p$. Also in the critical regime, we calculate…
We consider the calculation of ground-state expectation values for the non-Hermitian Z(N) spin chain described by free parafermions. For N=2 the model reduces to the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with open boundary conditions. Use is made of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem to obtain exact results for particular single site and nearest-neighbour ground-state expectation values for general N which are valid for sites deep inside the chain. These results are tested numerically for N=3, along with how they change as a function of distance from the boundary.
We show how a boundary state different from the (1,1) Cardy state may be realised in the (m,m+1) minimal string by the introduction of an auxiliary matrix into the standard two hermitian matrix model. This boundary is a natural generalisation of the free spin boundary state in the Ising model. The resolvent for the auxiliary matrix is computed using an extension of the saddle-point method of Zinn-Justin to the case of non-identical potentials. The structure of the saddle-point equations result in a Seiberg-Shih like relation between the boundary states which is valid away from the continuum li…
We demonstrate using direct numerical diagonalization and extrapolation methods that boundary conditions have a profound effect on the bulk properties of a simple $Z(N)$ model for $N \ge 3$ for which the model hamiltonian is non-hermitian. For $N=2$ the model reduces to the well known quantum Ising model in a transverse field. For open boundary conditions the $Z(N)$ model is known to be solved exactly in terms of free parafermions. Once the ends of the open chain are connected by considering the model on a ring, the bulk properties, including the ground-state energy per site, are seen to diffe…
We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Generalizing earlier work \cite{Stin95a,Stin95b} we present an alternative description of these processes in terms of a time-dependent operator algebra with quadratic relations. These relations generate the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum and turn the calculation of time-dependent expectation values into the problem of either finding representations of this algebra or of solving functional equations for the initial values of the…
