Open systems with anti parity-time (anti $\mathcal{PT}$-) or $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry exhibit a rich phenomenology absent in their Hermitian counterparts. To date all model systems and their diverse realizations across classical and quantum platforms have been local in time, i.e. Markovian. Here we propose a non-Markovian system with anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry where a single time-delay encodes the memory, and experimentally demonstrate its consequences with two time-delay coupled semiconductor lasers. A transcendental characteristic equation with infinitely many eigenvalue pairs sets our model apart. We show that a sequence of amplifying-to-decaying dominant mode transitions is induced by the time delay in our minimal model. The signatures of these transitions quantitatively match results obtained from four, coupled, nonlinear rate equations for laser dynamics, and are experimentally observed as constant-width sideband oscillations in the laser intensity profiles. Our work introduces a new paradigm of non-Hermitian systems with memory, paves the way for their realization in classical systems, and may apply to time-delayed feedback-control for quantum systems.

The decoherence of two initially entangled qubits in a squeezed vacuum cavity has been investigated exactly. The results show that, first, in principle, the disentanglement time decreases with the increasing of squeeze parameter r, due to the augmenting of average photon number of every mode in squeezed vacuum cavity. Second, there are entanglement revivals after complete disentanglement for the case of even parity initial Bell state, while there are entanglement decrease and revival before complete disentanglement for the case of odd parity initial Bell state. The results are quite different …
The dynamic behavior of the entanglement for two two-level atoms coupled to a common lossy cavity is studied. We find that the speed of disentanglement is a decreasing (increasing) function of the damping rate of the cavity for on/near (far-off) resonant couplings. The quantitative explanations for these phenomena are given, and further, it is shown that they are related to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effect induced by the non-Markovian environment.
The decay dynamics of a local excitation interacting with a non-Markovian environment, modeled by a semi-infinite tight-binding chain, is exactly evaluated. We identify distinctive regimes for the dynamics. Sequentially: (i) early quadratic decay of the initial-state survival probability, up to a spreading time $t_{S}$, (ii) exponential decay described by a self-consistent Fermi Golden Rule, and (iii) asymptotic behavior governed by quantum diffusion through the return processes and leading to an inverse power law decay. At this last cross-over time $t_{R}$ a survival collapse becomes possible…
We derive an exact non-Markovian master equation that generalizes the previous work [Hu, Paz and Zhang, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 45}, 2843 (1992)] to damped harmonic oscillators with time-varying parameters. This is achieved by exploiting the linearity of the system and operator solution in Heisenberg picture. Our equation governs the non-Markovian quantum dynamics when the system is modulated by external devices. As an application, we apply our equation to parity kick decoupling problems. The time-dependent dissipative coefficients in the master equation are shown to be modified drastically when the…
The decoherence of two initially entangled qubits in anisotropic band gap photonic crystal has been studied analytically without Born or Markovian approximation. It is shown that the decoherence dynamics of two qubits in photonic crystal is greatly different from that of two qubits in vacuum or subjected to usual non-Markovian reservoir. The results also show that the finite time decoherence invoked by spontaneous emission could be suppressed efficiently and the entanglement of the Bell state possesses odd parity is more easily preserved in photonic crystal than that of the Bell state possesse…
We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on pairwise entanglement dynamics of a collective of non-interacting qubits which have been initially prepared in a Werner state and are off-resonantly coupled to a common and non-Markovian environment. We obtain the analytical expression of the concurrence in the absence and presence of the non-selective measurements. In particular, we express our results in the strong and weak coupling regimes and examine the role of the system size, and the effect of the detuning from the cavity field frequency on the temporal behaviour of the pairwise e…
We present a canonical derivation of an influence superoperator which generates the reduced dynamics of a Fermionic quantum system linearly coupled to a Fermionic environment initially at thermal equilibrium. We use this formalism to derive a generalized-Lindblad master equation (in the Markovian limit) and a generalized version of the hierarchical equations of motion valid in arbitrary parity-symmetry conditions, important for the correct evaluation of system correlation functions and spectra.
We examine the Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in the context of non-Markovian dynamics in entangled spin-boson systems in contact with noninteracting reservoirs. We identify enhanced non-Markovian signatures in specific two-qubit partitions of a Bell-like initial state, with results showing that the intra-qubit Zeno effect or anti-Zeno effect occurs in conjunction with inter-qubit non-Markovian dynamics for a range of system parameters. The time domain of effective Zeno or anti-Zeno dynamics is about the same order of magnitude as the non-Markovian time scale of the reservoir correlation dynamics,…
A minimal model of a quantum thermal machine is analyzed, where a driven two level working medium (WM) is embedded in an environment (reservoir) whose spectrum possesses bandgaps. overlap with hot or cold reservoirs whose spectra are separated by a bandgap. Approximate and exact treatments supported by analytical considerations yield a complete characterization of this thermal machine in the deep quantum domain. For slow to moderate modulation, the spectral response of the reservoirs is close to equilibrium, exhibiting sideband (Floquet) resonances in the heat currents and power output. In con…
We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in quantum dissipative systems by employing a hierarchical equations of motion approach which is beyond the usual Markovian approximation, the rotating wave approximation, and the perturbative approximation. The quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno dynamics of a biased qubit-boson model and a biased qutrit-boson model are provided as illustrative examples. It is found that (i) there exists multiple Zeno-anti-Zeno crossover phenomena, (ii) the non-Markovian characteristic of the bath may be favorable for the accessibility of the Zeno dynamics, and (ii…
The motivation for this theoretical paper comes from recent experiments of a heat transfer system of two thermally coupled rings rotating in opposite directions with equal angular velocities that present anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry. The theoretical model predicted a rest-to-motion temperature distribution phase transition during the symmetry breaking for a particular rotation speed. In this work we show that the system exhibits a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) phase transition at the exceptional point in which eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding non-Hermitian Hamiltonian coales…
We study the quantum phase synchronization of a driven two-level system (TLS) coupled to a structured environment and demonstrate that quantum synchronization can be enhanced by the classical driving field. We use the Husimi $Q$-function to characterize the phase preference and find the in-phase and anti-phase locking phenomenon in the phase diagram. Remarkably, we show that the in-phase classical driving enables a TLS to reach stable anti-phase locking in the Markovian regime. However, we find that the synergistic action of classical driving and non-Markovian effects significantly enhances th…
We develop a formalism for modelling exact time dynamics in waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) using the real-space approach. The formalism does not assume any specific configuration of emitters and allows the study of Markovian dynamics fully analytically and non-Markovian dynamics semi-analytically with a simple numerical integration step. We use the formalism to study subradiance, superradiance and bound states in continuum. We discuss new phenomena such as subdivision of collective decay rates into symmetric and anti-symmetric subsets and non-Markovian superradiance effects that can l…
We investigate the properties of two anti-parity-time (anti-PT )-symmetric four-site scattering centers. The anti-PT -symmetric scattering center may have imaginary couplings, real couplings, and real on-site potentials. The only difference between the two scattering centers is the coupling between two central sites of the scattering center, which plays a crucial role in determining the parity of anti-PT symmetry and significantly affects the scattering properties. For the imaginary coupling, the even-parity anti-PT -symmetric scattering center possesses nonunitary scattering and the differenc…
In this work we study the steady state entanglement between two qubits interacting asymetrically with a common non-Markovian environment. Depending on the initial two-qubit state, the asymmetry in the couplings between each qubit and the non-Markovian environment may lead to enhanced entanglement in the steady state of the system, measured in terms of the two-qubit concurrence. Our results indicate that, if a qubit-qubit interaction is also present, the two-qubit steady state concurrence is always favored by the symmetric or anti-symmetric coupling configuration. Although finite, the steady co…
We investigate the scattering properties of an anti-parity-symmetric non-Hermitian system. The anti-parity-symmetric scattering center possesses imaginary nearest-neighbor hoppings and real onsite potentials, it has been experimentally realized through dissipative coupling and frequency detuning between atomic spin waves. We find that such anti-parity-symmetric system displays three salient features: Firstly, the reflection and transmission are both reciprocal. Secondly, the reflection and transmission probabilities satisfy R+T=1 or R-T=1, which depends on the parity of the scattering center s…
We show that parity-time and partial parity-time symmetries are particular cases of antiunitary symmetry. This point is illustrated by means of a recently discussed system of non-Hermitian coupled harmonic oscillators that also exhibits other types of antiunitary symmetries. We also show that a combination of group and perturbation theory is a useful tool for predicting broken antiunitary symmetry.
We consider a general open system dynamics and we provide a recursive method to derive the associated non-Markovian master equation in a perturbative series. The approach relies on a momenta expansion of the open system evolution. Unlike previous perturbative approaches of this kind, the method presented in this paper provides a recursive definition of each perturbative term. Furthermore, we give an intuitive diagrammatic description of each term of the series, which pro- vides an useful analytical tool to build them and to derive their structure in terms of commutators and anticommutators. We…
We propose an anti-parity-time (anti-PT ) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, where the large non-Hermiticity constructively creates nontrivial topology and greatly expands the topological phase. In the anti-PT -symmetric SSH model, the gain and loss are alternatively arranged in pairs under the inversion symmetry. The appearance of degenerate point at the center of the Brillouin zone determines the topological phase transition, while the exceptional points unaffect the band topology. The large non-Hermiticity leads to unbalanced wavefunction distribution in the broken an…
We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of $N=2l+1$ waveguides and exhibiting parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on $N$th-order exceptional points (EPs). The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a …
The uncertainty relation is a fundamental limit in quantum mechanics and is of great importance to quantum information processing as it relates to quantum precision measurement. Due to interactions with the surrounding environment, a quantum system will unavoidably suffer from decoherence. Here, we investigate the dynamic behaviors of the entropic uncertainty relation of an atom-cavity interacting system under a bosonic reservoir during the crossover between Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. Specifically, we explore the dynamic behavior of the entropic uncertainty relation for a pair of inc…
We reveal how the vector field links are untied under the influence of anti-parity-time-symmetric couplings in a dissipative sublattice-symmetric topological photonic crystal lattice. The topology of the quasi-one-dimensional two-band system is encoded in the geometric topology of the vector fields associated with the Bloch Hamiltonian. The linked vector fields reflect the topology of the nontrivial phase. The topological phase transition occurs concomitantly with the untying of the vector field link at the exceptional points. Counterintuitively, more dissipation constructively creates a nontr…
By engineering an anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetric cavity magnonics system with precise eigenspace controllability, we observe two different singularities in the same system. One type of singularity, the exceptional point (EP), is produced by tuning the magnon damping. Between two EPs, the maximal coherent superposition of photon and magnon states is robustly sustained by the preserved anti-PT symmetry. The other type of singularity, arising from the dissipative coupling of two anti-resonances, is an unconventional bound state in the continuum (BIC). At the settings of BICs, the coupled sy…
Parity-time (PT) symmetry in non-Hermitian optical systems promises distinct optical effects and applications not found in conservative optics. Its counterpart, anti-PT symmetry, subscribes another class of intriguing optical phenomena and implies complementary techniques for exotic light manipulation. Despite exciting progress, so far anti-PT symmetry has only been realized in bulky systems or with optical gain. Here, we report an on-chip realization of non-Hermitian optics with anti-PT symmetry, by using a fully-passive, nanophotonic platform consisting of three evanescently coupled waveguid…
Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry give rise to exceptional points (EPs) with intriguing properties related to, e.g., chiral transport and enhanced sensitivity, due to the coalescence of eigenvectors. In this paper, we propose a powerful and easily computable tool, based on the Hilbert-Schmidt speed (HSS), which does not require the diagonalization of the evolved density matrix, to detect exactly the EPs and hence the critical behavior of the (anti-)$\mathcal{PT}\!-$symmetric systems, especially high-dimensional ones. Our theoretic…
The evolution of a surface excitation in a two dimentional model is analyzed. I) It starts quadratically up to a spreading time t_{S}. II) It follows an exponential behavior governed by a self-consistent Fermi Golden Rule. III) At longer times, the exponential is overrun by an inverse power law describing return processes governed by quantum diffusion. At this last transition time t_{R} a survival collapse becomes possible, bringing the survival probability down by several orders of magnitude. We identify this strongly destructive interference as an antiresonance in the time domain.
We consider the quantum correlations (entanglement and quantum discord) dynamics of two coupled spin qubits with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction influenced by a locally external magnetic field along $z$-direction and coupled to bath spin-1/2 particles as independent non-Markovian environment. We find that with increasing $D_{z}$ and decreasing $J_{z}$, the value of entanglement and quantum discord increase for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. Not that, this growth is more for the ferromagnetic materials. In addition, we perceive that entanglement and quantum discord decreas…

The Rabi Hamiltonian describes the interaction between a two-level atom and a single mode of the quantized electromagnetic field. When the system is subject to the Markovian atomic dephasing reservoir, the anti-rotating term leads to the photon generation from vacuum. In the presence of Markovian damping reservoirs, the asymptotic mean photon number is higher than the thermal photon number expected in the absence of the anti-rotating term. We obtain approximate analytical expressions in the asymptotic regime for the photon creation rate in the pure dephasing case and the mean photon number and…
The recently-developed notion of 'parity-time (PT) symmetry' in optical systems with a controlled gain-loss interplay has spawned an intriguing way of achieving optical behaviors that are presently unattainable with standard arrangements. In most experimental studies so far, however, the implementations rely highly on the advances of nanotechnologies and sophisticated fabrication techniques to synthesize solid-state materials. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of optical anti-PT symmetry, a counterpart of conventional PT symmetry, in a warm atomic-vapor cell. By exploiting r…
Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) provides a powerful approach to the dynamics of an open quantum system in bosonic environments. Here we develop an NMQSD method to study the open quantum system in fermionic environments. This problem involves anticommutative noise functions (i.e., Grassmann variables) that are intrinsically different from the noise functions of bosonic baths. We obtain the NMQSD equation for quantum states of the system and the non-Markovian master equation. Moreover, we apply this NMQSD method to single and double quantum-dot systems.
Light propagation in systems with anti-Hermitian coupling, described by a spinor-like wave equation, provides a general route for the observation of anti parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$ ) symmetry in optics. Remarkably, under a different definition of parity operator, a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can be found as well in such systems. Such symmetries are ubiquitous in nonlinear optical interactions and are exemplified by considering modulation instability in optical fibers and optical parametric amplification.
Developing quantum machines which can outperform their classical counterparts, thereby achieving quantum supremacy or quantum advantage, is a major aim of the current research on quantum thermodynamics and quantum technologies. Here we show that a fast-modulated cyclic quantum heat machine operating in the non-Markovian regime can lead to significant heat-current and power boosts induced by the anti-Zeno effect. Such boosts signify a quantum advantage over almost all heat-machines proposed thus far that operate in the conventional Markovian regime, where the quantumness of the system-bath inte…
We investigate the properties of parity-time symmetric periodic photonic structures using Heesh-Shubnikov group theory. Classical group theory cannot be used to categorize the symmetry of the eigenmodes because the time-inversion operator is antiunitary. Fortunately, corepresentations of Heesh-Shubnikov groups have been developed to characterize the effect of antiunitary operators on eigenfunctions. Using the example structure of a one-dimensional photonic lattice, we identify the corepresentations of eigenmodes at both low and high symmetry points in the photonic band diagram. We find that th…
Phonon lasers, as the counterpart of photonic lasers, have been intensively studied in a large variety of systems, however, (all) most of them are based on the directly coherent pumping. Intuitively, dissipation is an unfavorable factor for gain in a laser. Here we demonstrate a novel mechanism of phonon lasing from the dissipative coupling in a multimode optomechanical system. By precisely engineering the dissipations of two membranes and tuning the intensity modulation of the cavity light, the two-membrane-in-the-middle system shows anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetry and the cavity mediated…

III) At longer times, the exponential is overrun by an inverse power law describing return processes governed by quantum diffusion. At this last transition time t_{R} a survival collapse becomes possible, bringing the polarization down by several orders of magnitude. We discuss phonon-induced non-Markovian and Markovian features in QD-based optics. We cover lineshapes in linear absorption experiments, phonon-induced incoherence in the Heitler regime, and memory correlations in two-photon coherences. To quantitatively and qualitatively understand the underlying physics, we present several theoretical models which model the non-Markovian properties of the electron-phonon interaction accurately in different regimes. Examples are the Heisenberg equation of motion approach, the polaron master equation, and Liouville-propagator techniques in the independent boso…
The emergence of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry has greatly enriched our study of symmetry-enabled non-Hermitian physics, but the realization of quantum $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry faces an intrinsic issue of unavoidable symmetry-breaking Langevin noises. Here we construct a quantum pseudo-anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ (pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry in a two-mode bosonic system without involving Langevin noises. We show that the spontaneous pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$ symmetry breaking leads to an exceptional point, across which there is a transition between different types of quantum squeezing dynamic…
The construction of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, to which isolated integrable quantum many-body systems relax after a quantum quench, is based upon the principle of maximum entropy. In contrast, there are no universal and model-independent laws that govern the relaxation dynamics and stationary states of open quantum systems, which are subjected to Markovian drive and dissipation. Yet, as we show, relaxation of driven-dissipative systems after a quantum quench can, in fact, be determined by a maximum entropy ensemble, if the Liouvillian that generates the dynamics of the system has parity-t…
The behavior displayed by a quantum system when it is perturbed by a series of von Neumann measurements along time is analyzed. Because of the similarity between this general process with giving a deck of playing cards a shuffle, here it is referred to as quantum shuffling, showing that the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects emerge naturally as two time limits. Within this framework, a connection between the gradual transition from anti-Zeno to Zeno behavior and the appearance of an underlying Markovian dynamics is found. Accordingly, although a priori it might result counterintuitive, the qua…
An approach, called discretized environment method, is introduced to treat exactly non-Markovian effects in open quantum systems. In this approach, a complex environment described by a spectral function is mapped into a finite set of discretized states with an appropriate coupling to the system of interest. The finite set of system plus environment degrees of freedom are then explicitly followed in time leading to a quasi-exact description. The present approach is anticipated to be particularly accurate in the low temperature and strongly non-Markovian regime. The discretized environment metho…
