The motivation for this theoretical paper comes from recent experiments of a heat transfer system of two thermally coupled rings rotating in opposite directions with equal angular velocities that present anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry. The theoretical model predicted a rest-to-motion temperature distribution phase transition during the symmetry breaking for a particular rotation speed. In this work we show that the system exhibits a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) phase transition at the exceptional point in which eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding non-Hermitian Hamiltonian coalesce. We analytically solve the heat diffusive system at the exceptional point and show that one can pass through the phase transition that separates the unbroken and broken phases by changing the radii of the rings. In the case of unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry the temperature profiles exhibit damped Rabi oscillations at the exceptional point. Our results unveils the behavior of the system at the exceptional point in heat diffusive systems.
In this report, we have studied exceptional spectra of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model in two situations. Firstly, an exceptional spectra is achieved in resonant condition, in which the frequencies of two qubit and photon field satisfy resonant relation. With transformed rotating-wave approximation (TRWA) method, the Rabi model can be mapped into the solvable formation in qubit-photon Fock states space. Based on the quantum supperconducting circuits experiment setup, the best value range of the system parameters are discussed. In the resonant station working window, the energy spectrums are c…
We study two models describing the interaction of a two-level system with two quantum field modes. The first one is equivalent to a dissipative two-state system with just two boson fields in the absence of tunneling. The second describes two orthogonal fields interacting with the corresponding orthogonal dipoles of a two-level system. We show that both models present a partial two-mode $SU(2)$ symmetry and that they can be solved in the exceptional case of resonant fields. We study their ground state configurations, that is, we find the quantum precursors of the corresponding semi-classical ph…
In our recent paper (Li and Batchelor J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48, 454005 (2015)) we obtained exceptional points in the eigenspectrum of the generalized Rabi model in terms of a set of algebraic equations. We also gave a proof for the number of roots of the constraint polynomials defining these exceptional solutions as a function of the system parameters and discussed the number of crossing points in the eigenspectrum. This approach however, only covered a subset of all exceptional points in the eigenspectrum. In this addendum, we clarify the distinction between the exceptional parts of the ei…
Two-qubit system is the foundation of constructing the universal quantum gate. We have studied the two-qubit Rabi model for the general case and its generalizations with dipole, XXX and XYZ Heisenberg qubit-qubit interactions, which are commonly used in quantum computation. Their solutions are presented analytically with eigenstates can be obtained in terms of extended coherent states or Fock states and applied to the construction of the ultrafast two-qubit quantum gate in circuit QED and quantum state storage and transfer. Some novel kinds of quasi-exact solutions are found for specific sets …
We obtain the exceptional part of the eigenspectrum of the generalised Rabi model, also known as the driven Rabi model, in terms of the roots of a set of algebraic equations. This approach provides a product form for the wavefunction components and allows an explicit connection with recent results obtained for the wavefunction in terms of truncated confluent Heun functions. Other approaches are also compared. For particular parameter values the exceptional part of the eigenspectrum consists of doubly degenerate crossing points. We give a proof for the number of roots of the constraint polynomi…
In this work, the anisotropic variant of the quantum Rabi model with different coupling strengths of the rotating and counter-rotating wave terms is studied by the Bogoliubov operator approach. The anisotropy preserves the parity symmetry of the original model. We derive the corresponding $G$-function, which yields both the regular and exceptional eigenvalues. The exceptional eigenvalues correspond to the crossing points of two energy levels with different parities and are doubly degenerate. We find analytically that the ground-state and the first excited state can cross several times, indicat…
We study the spectrum of the generalized Rabi model in which co- and counter-rotating terms have different coupling strengths. It is also equivalent to the model of a two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. Like in case of the Rabi model, the spectrum of the generalized Rabi model consists of the regular and the exceptional parts. The latter is represented by the energy levels which cross at certain parameters' values which we determine explicitly. The wave functions of these exceptional states are given by finite order polynomials in …
The purpose of this paper is to study the exceptional eigenvalues of the asymmetric quantum Rabi models (AQRM), specifically, to determine the degeneracy of their eigenstates. Here, the Hamiltonian $H^ε_{\text{Rabi}}$ of the AQRM is defined by adding the fluctuation term $εσ_x$, with $σ_x$ being the Pauli matrix, to the Hamiltonian of the quantum Rabi model, breaking its $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry. The spectrum of $H^ε_{\text{Rabi}}$ contains a set of exceptional eigenvalues, considered to be remains of the eigenvalues of the uncoupled bosonic mode, which are further classified in two types: Ju…
We present a new tractable quantum Rabi model for $N$-level atoms by extending the $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry of the two-state Rabi model. The Hamiltonian is $\mathbb Z_N$ symmetric and allows the parameters in the level separation terms to be complex while remaining hermitian. This latter property means that the new model is {\em chiral}, which makes it differ from any existing $N$-state Rabi models in the literature. The $\mathbb Z_N$ symmetry provides partial diagonalization of the general Hamiltonian. The exact isolated (i.e. exceptional) energies of the model have the Rabi-like form but are $…
An open quantum system operated at the spectral singularities where dimensionality reduces, known as exceptional points (EPs), demonstrates distinguishing behavior from the Hermitian counterpart. Here, we present an analytical description of local density of states (LDOS) for microcavity featuring chiral EPs, and unveil the anomalous spontaneous emission dynamics from a quantum emitter (QE) due to the non-Lorentzian response of EPs. Specifically, we reveal that a square Lorentzian term of LDOS contributed by chiral EPs can destructively interfere with the linear Lorentzian profile, resulting i…
The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM), which describes the interaction between a quantum harmonic oscillator and a biased qubit, arises naturally in circuit quantum electrodynamic circuits and devices. The existence of hidden symmetry in the AQRM leads to a rich energy landscape of conical intersections (CIs) and thus to interesting topological properties. However, current approximations to the AQRM fail to reproduce these CIs correctly. To overcome these limitations we propose a generalized adiabatic approximation (GAA) to describe the energy spectrum of the AQRM. This is achieved by combi…
We study theoretically the population transfer in two-level atoms driven by chirped lasers. It is known that in the Hermitian case, the rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is stable for an above-critical chirp below which the final populations of states Rabi oscillate with varying laser power. We show that if the excited state is represented by a resonance, the separatrix marking this critical phenomenon in the space of the laser pulse parameters emanates from an exceptional point (EP) -- a non-Hermitian singularity formed in the atomic system by the fast laser field oscillations and encircled due t…
In a recent Comment (arXiv:1510.00768) it was claimed that Braak's solution of the quantum Rabi model does not include the set of non-degenerate exceptional points and is thus not a complete solution. Braak's solution does contain these points however, as has been shown before, and which we demonstrate here by obtaining the same energy plots as in the Comment, directly from Braak's solution. Therefore the claim that Braak's solution is not complete is incorrect.
We develop a method to find analytical solutions for the eigenstates of the quantum Rabi model. These include symmetric, anti-symmetric and asymmetric analytic solutions given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Both regular and exceptional solutions are given in a unified form. In addition, the analytic conditions for determining the energy spectrum are obtained. Our results show that conditions proposed by Braak [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 100401 (2011)] are a type of sufficiency condition for determining the regular solutions. The well-known Judd isolated exact solutions appear na…
Unidirectional reflectionlessness is investigated in a waveguide quantum electrodynamics system that consists of a cavity and a $Λ$-type three-level quantum dot coupled to a one-dimensional plasmonic waveguide. Analytical expressions of transmission and reflection coefficients are derived and discussed for both resonant and off-resonant couplings. By appropriately modulating the coupling strength, phase shift and Rabi frequency, unidirectional reflectionlessness is observed at the exceptional points. And unidirectional coherent perfect absorption is exhibited at the vicinity of exceptional poi…
Exceptional points (EPs), i.e. branch point singularities of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, are ubiquitous in optics. So far, the signatures of EPs have been mostly studied assuming classical light. In the passive parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) optical coupler, a fingerprint of EPs resulting from the coalescence of two resonance modes is a qualitative change of the photon decay law, from damped Rabi-like oscillations to transparency, as the EP is crossed by increasing the loss rate. However, when probed by non-classical states of light, quantum interference can hide EPs. Here it is shown that, unde…
The aim of this paper is a better understanding for the eigenstates of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model by Lie algebra representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. We define a second order element of the universal enveloping algebra $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$, which, through the action of a certain infinite dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$, provides a picture of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model equivalent to the one drawn by confluent Heun ordinary differential equations. Using this description, we prove the existence of level crossing…
We revisit the complex time method for the application to quantum dynamics as an exceptional point is encircled in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian. The basic idea of the complex time method is using complex contour integration to perform the first-order adiabatic perturbation integral. In this way, the quantum dynamical problem is transformed to a study of singularities in the complex time plane -- transition points -- which represent complex degeneracies of the adiabatic Hamiltonian as the time-dependent parameters defining the encircling contour are analytically continued to complex p…
Open systems with gain and loss, described by non-trace-preserving, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, have been a subject of intense research recently. The effect of exceptional-point degeneracies on the dynamics of classical systems has been observed through remarkable phenomena such as the parity-time symmetry breaking transition, asymmetric mode switching, and optimal energy transfer. On the other hand, consequences of an exceptional point for quantum evolution and decoherence are hitherto unexplored. Here, we use post-selection on a three-level superconducting transmon circuit with tunable Rabi …
We consider the geometric phase and quantum tunneling in vicinity of diabolic and exceptional points. We show that the geometric phase associated with the degeneracy points is defined by the flux of complex magnetic monopole. In weak-coupling limit the leading contribution to the real part of geometric phase is given by the flux of the Dirac monopole plus quadrupole term, and the expansion for its imaginary part starts with the dipolelike field. For a two-level system governed by the generic non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we derive a formula to compute the non-adiabatic complex geometric phase by …
