We present a superconducting circuit in which non-Abelian geometric transformations can be realized using an adiabatic parameter cycle. In contrast to previous proposals, we employ quantum evolution in the ground state. We propose an experiment in which the transition from non-Abelian to Abelian cycles can be observed by measuring the pumped charge as a function of the period of the cycle. Alternatively, the non-Abelian phase can be detected using a single-electron transistor working as a charge sensor.
A Josephson junction is made of two superconductors sandwiching an insulator, and a Josephson vortex is a magnetic vortex (flux tube) absorbed into the Josephson junction, whose dynamics can be described by the sine-Gordon equation. In a field theory framework, a flexible Josephson junction was proposed, in which the Josephson junction is represented by a domain wall separating two condensations and a Josephson vortex is a sine-Gordon soliton in the domain wall effective theory. In this paper, we propose a Josephson junction of non-Abelian color superconductors, that is described by a non-Abel…
We formulate the Josephson effect in a field theoretic language which affords a straightforward generalization to the non-abelian case. Our formalism interprets Josephson tunneling as the excitation of pseudo-Goldstone bosons. We demonstrate the formalism through the consideration of a single junction separating two regions with a purely non-abelian order parameter and a sandwich of three regions where the central region is in a distinct phase. Applications to various non-abelian symmetry breaking systems in particle and condensed matter physics are given.
In this work we present a detailed theoretical analysis for the spectral properties of Andreev bound states in the multiterminal Josephson junctions by employing a symmetry-constrained scattering matrix approach. We find that in the synthetic multidimensional space of superconducting phases, crossings of Andreev bands may support non-Abelian SU(2) monopoles with a topological charge characterized by the second class Chern number. We propose that these topological defects can be detected via a nonlinear response measurement of the current autocorrelations. In addition, multiterminal Josephson j…
We discuss real-space lattice models equivalent to gauge theories with a discrete non-Abelian gauge group. We construct the Hamiltonian formalism which is appropriate for their solid-state physics implementation and outline their basic properties. The unusual physics of these systems is due to local constraints on the degrees of freedom which are variables localized on the links of the lattice. We discuss two types of constraints that become equivalent after a duality transformation for Abelian theories but are qualitatively different for non-Abelian ones. We emphasize highly nontrivial topolo…
In $N$-band superconductors, the $U(1)^N$ phase invariance is spontaneously broken. We propose a model for $N$-band superconductors where the phase differences between gaps are represented by abelian gauge fields. This model corresponds to an $SU(N)$ gauge theory with the abelian projection. We show that there are massless modes as well as massive modes when the number of gaps $N$ is greater than 3. There are $N-3$ massless modes and two massive modes near a minimum of the Josephson potential when $N$ bands are equivalent and Josephson couplings are frustrated. The global symmetry $U(1)^{N-1}$…
Josephson junctions with an intrinsic phase shift of pi, so-called pi Josephson junctions, can be realized by a weak link of a d-wave superconductor with an appropriate boundary geometry. A model for the pairing potential of an according weak link is introduced which allows for the calculation of the influence of geometric parameters and temperature. From this model, current-phase relations and the critical current of the device are derived. The range of validity of the model is determined by comparison with selfconsistent solutions.
A novel way to realize a pi Josephson junction is proposed, based on a weak link in an unconventional d-wave superconductor with appropriately chosen boundary geometry. The critical current of such a junction is calculated from a fully selfconsistent solution of microscopic Eilenberger theory of superconductivity. The results clearly show, that a transition to a pi Josephson junction occurs for both low temperatures and small sizes of the geometry.
A pronounced resonance-like structure has been observed in the current dependence of AC susceptibility for two-dimensional array of unshunted Nb-AlOx-Nb Josephson junctions. Using a single-plaquette approximation, we were able to successfully fit our data assuming that resonance structure is related to the geometric (inductive) properties of the array.
We show that a constriction-type Josephson junction realized by an epitactic thin film of a d-wave superconductor with an appropriate boundary geometry exhibits intrinsic phase differences between 0 and pi depending on geometric parameters and temperature. Based on microscopic Eilenberger theory, we provide a general derivation of the relation between the change of the free energy of the junction and the current-phase relation. From the change of the free energy, we calculate phase diagrams and discuss transitions driven by geometric parameters and temperature.
In recent years there has been an intensive search for Majorana fermion states in condensed matter systems. Predicted to be localized on cores of vortices in certain non-conventional superconductors, their presence is known to render the exchange statistics of bulk vortices non-Abelian. Here we study the equations governing the dynamics of phase solitons (fluxons) in a long Josephson junction in a topological superconductor. We show that the fluxon will bind a localized zero energy Majorana mode and will consequently behave as a non-Abelian anyon. The low mass of the fluxon, as well as its exp…
Superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor Josephson junctions have been fabricated in order to study the width dependence of the critical current, normal state resistance and flux periodicity of the critical current modulation in an external field. Previous literature reports suggest anomalous scaling in topological junctions due to the presence of Majorana bound states. However, for most realised devices, one would expect that trivial $2π$-periodic Andreev levels dominate transport. We also observe anomalous scaling behaviour of junction parameters, but the scaling can be well expla…
As the size of a Josephson junction is reduced, charging effects become important and the superconducting phase across the link turns into a periodic quantum variable. Isolated Josephson junction arrays are described in terms of such periodic quantum variables and thus exhibit pronounced quantum interference effects arising from paths with different winding numbers (Aharonov-Casher effects). These interference effects have strong implications for the excitation spectrum of the array which are relevant in applications of superconducting junction arrays for quantum computing. The interference ef…
We investigate the properties of a weak link between two Rashba-based superconducting nanowires with geometric misalignment. By applying an external magnetic field the system can be driven into a topological non-trivial regime. We demonstrate that the Josephson current can be modulated in amplitude and sign through the variation of the applied field and, remarkably, via the angle controlling the spin-orbit locking mismatch at the interface of the nanowires. The proposed setup with misaligned coplanar nanowires provides the building block configuration for the manipulation of coherent transport…
By improving resolution of home-made mutual-inductance measurements technique, a pronounced step-like structure (with the number of steps n=4 for all AC fields) has been observed in the temperature dependence of AC susceptibility in artificially prepared two-dimensional Josephson Junction Arrays (2D-JJA) of unshunted Nb-AlO_x-Nb junctions with β_L(4.2K)=30. Using a single-plaquette approximation of the overdamped 2D-JJA model, we were able to successfully fit our data assuming that steps are related to the geometric properties of the plaquette. The number of steps n corresponds to the number o…
We have developed an adiabatic Abelian geometric quantum computation strategy based on the non-degenerate energy eigenstates in (but not limited to) superconducting phase-qubit systems. The fidelity of the designed quantum gate was evaluated in the presence of simulated thermal fluctuation in superconducting phase qubits circuit and was found to be rather robust against the random errors. In addition, it was elucidated that the Berry phase in the designed adiabatic evolution may be detected directly via the quantum state tomography developed for superconducting qubits.
The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show i…
We consider a Rashba spin-orbit coupled nanowire with anisotropic spin-singlet superconducting pairing and time-reversal-invariant symmetry. We explore the evolution of the topological superconducting phases of this system due to geometric deformations for the representative case of a wire bent in a semielliptical shape. We find that when the system is in its topological superconducting phase, strong inhomogeneities in the profile curvature can produce a pair of localized eigenmodes, which can be attributed to a nonuniform topological phase. The curved geometric profile also allows to tune the…
We study the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, of an array of fluctuating, maximally gapped interacting ladders, embedded in a disordered plane. Renormalization group analysis indicates that geometrical fluctuations mitigate the suppression of the intra-ladder pairing correlations by the disorder. In addition, the fluctuations enhance the Josephson tunneling between the ladders. Both effects lead to an increase of T_c in the Josephson coupled array. These findings may be relevant to the understanding of the 1/8 anomaly in the lanthanum based high-temperature superconductors.
We have simulated the performance of the Josephson Travelling Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA) based on the one-dimensional array of RF SQUIDs. Unlike the ideal model in which all SQUIDs are assumed to be identical, we allowed variation of the device parameters such as the geometric inductance of the SQUID loop, capacitance to ground, Josephson junction capacitance and critical current. Our simulations confirm the negative effects of variation of the device parameters leading to microwave reflections between individual cells and the shift of the flux bias from the optimal point. The strongest…
Topological superconductors supporting Majorana Fermions with non-abelian statistics are presently a subject of intense theoretical and experimental effort. It has been proposed that the observation of a half-frequency or a fractional Josephson effect is a more reliable test for topological superconductivity than the search for end zero modes. Low-energy end modes can occur accidentally due to impurities. In fact, the fractional Josephson effect has been observed for the semiconductor nanowire system. Here we consider the ac Josephson effect in a conventional s-wave superconductor-normal metal…
Self-consistent solutions of microscopic Eilenberger theory are presented for a two-dimensional model of a superconducting channel with a geometric constriction. Magnetic fields, external ones as well as those caused by the supercurrents, are included and the relevant equations are solved numerically without further assumptions. Results concerning the influence of temperature, geometric parameters, of $κ=λ_L/ξ_0$ and of external magnetic fields on the Andreev bound states in the weak link and on the current-phase relation are presented. We find that the Andreev bound states within the junction…
I propose a new mechanism of intense high-frequency electromagnetic wave generation by spatially uniform stacked Josephson junctions at zero magnetic field. The ac-Josephson effect converts the dc-bias voltage into ac-supercurrent, however, in the absence of spatial variation of Josephson phase difference, does not provide dc-to-ac power conversion, needed for emission of electromagnetic waves. Here I demonstrate that at geometrical resonance conditions, the spatial homogeneity of phase can be spontaneously broken by appearance of breathers (bound fluxon-antifluxon pairs), facilitating effecti…
The Cooper pair box qubit of SQUID configuration enables the readout of the qubit states by probing the effective Josephson inductance of the SQUID. This is realized by coupling the qubit to a tank circuit which induces a small alternating supercurrent in the SQUID loop. The effect of a small (but finite) geometrical inductance of the loop on the eigenstates of the system is figured out. The effect of qubit dephasing due to quadratic coupling to the tank circuit is evaluated. It is shown that the rate of dephasing in the vicinity of the magic points is relatively low unless the Josephson junct…
Ballistic Josephson junctions are studied in the presence of a spin-splitting field and spin-orbit coupling. A generic expression for the quasi-classical Green's function is obtained and with its help we analyze several aspects of the proximity effect between a spin-textured normal metal (N) and singlet superconductors (S). In particular, we show that the density of states may show a zero-energy peak which is a generic consequence of the spin-dependent couplings in heterostructures. In addition we also obtain the spin current and the induced magnetic moment in a SNS structure and discuss possi…
Quantum computation by non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZMs) offers an approach to achieve fault tolerance by encoding quantum information in the non-local charge parity states of semiconductor nanowire networks in the topological superconductor regime. Thus far, experimental studies of MZMs chiefly relied on single electron tunneling measurements which leads to decoherence of the quantum information stored in the MZM. As a next step towards topological quantum computation, charge parity conserving experiments based on the Josephson effect are required, which can also help exclude suggested n…
The multi-terminal Josephson effect allows DC supercurrent to flow at finite commensurate voltages. Existing proposals to realize this effect rely on nonlocal Andreev processes in superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions. However, this approach requires precise control over microscopic states and is obscured by dissipative current. We show that standard tunnel Josephson circuits also support multiplet supercurrent mediated only by local tunneling processes. Furtheremore, we observe that the supercurrents persist even in the high charging energy regime in which only sequential Cooper tran…
The effects of random dilution of junctions on a two-dimensional Josephson-junction array in a magnetic field are considered. For rational values of the average flux quantum per plaquette $f$, the superconducting transition temperature vanishes, for increasing dilution, at a critical value $x_S(f)$, while the vortex ordering remains stable up to $x_{VL}>x_S$, much below the value $x_p$ corresponding to the geometric percolation threshold. For $ x_{VL}<x<x_p$, the array behaves as a zero-temperature vortex-glass. Numerical results for $f=1/2$ from defect energy calculations are presented which …
In this Chapter, we present our latest experimental results (along with their theoretical interpretation) related to some unusual magnetic properties of artificially prepared ordered two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (of both shunted and unshunted Nb-AlO_x-Nb tunnel junctions). Namely, we address the following topics: (i) influence of non-uniform critical current density profile on magnetic field behavior of AC susceptibility, (ii) origin of the so-called dynamic reentrance phenomenon, and (iii) manifestation of novel geometric quantization effects in temperature behavior of AC magneti…
The properties of Josephson devices are strongly affected by geometrical effects such as those associated with the magnetic field induced by the bias current. The generally adopted analysis of Owen and Scalapino [{\it Phys. Rev.}{\bf 164}, 538 (1967)] for the critical current, $I_c$, of an in-line Josephson tunnel junction in presence of an in-plane external magnetic field, $H_e$, is revisited and extended to junctions whose electrodes can be thin and of different materials. We demonstrate that the asymmetry of the magnetic diffraction pattern, $I_c(H_e)$, is ascribed to the different electrod…
We have used Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanoribbons, grown by catalyst-free Physical Vapor Deposition to fabricate high quality Josephson junctions with Al superconducting electrodes. In our devices we observe a pronounced reduction of the Josephson critical current density $J_c$ by reducing the width of the junction, which in our case corresponds to the width of the nanoribbon. Because the topological surface states extend over the entire circumference of the nanoribbon, the superconducting transport associated to them is carried by modes on both the top and bottom surfaces of the nanoribbon. We show that …
The properties of Josephson devices are strongly affected by geometrical effects. A loop-shaped superconducting electrode tightly couples a long Josephson tunnel junction with the surrounding electromagnetic field. Due to the fluxoid conservation, any change of the magnetic flux linked to the loop results in a variation of the shielding current circulating around the loop, which, in turn, affects the critical current of the Josephson junction. This method allows the realization of a novel family of robust superconducting devices (not based on the quantum interference) which can function as a g…
Recently, generalizations of quantum Hall effects (QHE) have been made from 2D to 4D and 8D by considering their mathematical frameworks within complex (C), quaternion (H) and octonion (O) compact (gauge) Lie algebra domains. Just as QHE in two-dimensional electron gases can be understood in terms of Chern number topological invariants that belong to the first Chern class, QHE in 4D and 8D can be understood in terms of Chern number topological invariants that belong to the 2nd and 4th Chern classes. It has been shown that 2D QHE phenomena are related to topologically-ordered ground states of J…
