We have developed an adiabatic Abelian geometric quantum computation strategy based on the non-degenerate energy eigenstates in (but not limited to) superconducting phase-qubit systems. The fidelity of the designed quantum gate was evaluated in the presence of simulated thermal fluctuation in superconducting phase qubits circuit and was found to be rather robust against the random errors. In addition, it was elucidated that the Berry phase in the designed adiabatic evolution may be detected directly via the quantum state tomography developed for superconducting qubits.
Numerical simulation results are presented which suggest that a class of non-adiabatic rapid passage sweeps first realized experimentally in 1991 should be capable of implementing a universal set of quantum gates G_{u} that operate with high fidelity. The gates constituting G_{u} are the Hadamard and NOT gates, together with variants of the phase, π/8, and controlled-phase gates. The universality of G_{u} is established by showing that it can construct the universal set consisting of Hadamard, phase, π/8, and controlled-NOT gates. Sweep parameter values are provided which simulations indicate …
We introduce a class of quantum adiabatic evolutions that we claim may be interpreted as the equivalents of the unitary gates of the quantum gate model. We argue that these gates form a universal set and may therefore be used as building blocks in the construction of arbitrary `adiabatic circuits', analogously to the manner in which gates are used in the circuit model. One implication of the above construction is that arbitrary classical boolean circuits as well as gate model circuits may be directly translated to adiabatic algorithms with no additional resources or complexities. We show that …
We implement a non-adiabatic universal set of holonomic quantum gates based on abelian holonomies using dynamical invariants, by Lie-algebraic methods. Unlike previous implementations, presented scheme does not rely on secondary methods such as double-loop or spin-echo and avoids associated experimental difficulties. It turns out that such gates exist purely in the non-adiabatic regime for these systems.
Qubits in topological quantum computation are built from non-Abelian anyons. Adiabatic braiding of anyons is exploited as topologically protected logical gate operations. Thus, the adiabaticity upon which the notion of quantum statistics is defined, plays a fundamental role in defining the non-Abelian anyons. We study the non-adiabatic effects in braidings of Ising-type anyons, namely Majorana fermions in topological superconductors, using the formalism of time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Using this formalism, we consider non-adiabatic corrections to non-Abelian statistics from: …
We present an efficient quantum algorithm for some independent set problems in graph theory, based on non-abelian adiabatic mixing. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm with analysis and numerical calculations for two different types of graphs, with the number of edges proportional to the number of vertices or its square. The theoretical advantages of our quantum algorithm over classical algorithms are discussed. Non-abelian adiabatic mixing can be a general technique to aid exploration in a landscape of near-degenerate ground states.
The Toffoli gate is an essential logic element, which permits implementation of a reversible processor. It is of relevance both for classical as well as quantum logics. We propose and theoretically study all-optical implementations of three-bit and four-bit Toffoli gates by application of adiabatic population transfer techniques. For a three-bit Toffoli gate we use variants of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) processes in a $Λ$-type level scheme, driven by two laser pulses at sufficiently large detunings. For the implementation of a four-bit Toffoli gate, we apply reversible adiabat…
The method of iterated resolvents is used to obtain an effective Hamiltonian for neighbouring qubits in the Kane solid state quantum computer. In contrast to the adiabatic gate processes inherent in the Kane proposal we show that free evolution of the qubit-qubit system, as generated by this effective Hamiltonian, combined with single qubit operations, is sufficient to produce a controlled-NOT (c-NOT) gate. Thus the usual set of universal gates can be obtained on the Kane quantum computer without the need for adiabatic switching of the controllable parameters as prescribed by Kane. Both the fi…
We develop new protocols for high-fidelity single qubit gates that exploit and extend theoretical ideas for accelerated adiabatic evolution. Our protocols are compatible with qubit architectures with highly isolated logical states, where traditional approaches are problematic; a prime example are superconducting fluxonium qubits. By using an accelerated adiabatic protocol we can enforce the desired adiabatic evolution while having gate times that are comparable to the inverse adiabatic energy gap (a scale that is ultimately set by the amount of power used in the control pulses). By modelling t…
We theoretically propose an alternative method to realize a deterministic SWAP gate using shortcuts to adiabatic passage based on the approach of Lewis- Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED). By combining Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants with quantum Zeno dynamics, the SWAP gate can be achieved deterministically. The strict numerical results show that our scheme is a fast and robust approach to achieve SWAP gate.
We present a process for the construction of a SWAP gate which does not require a composition of elementary gates from a universal set. We propose to employ direct techniques adapted to the preparation of this specific gate. The mechanism, based on adiabatic passage, constitutes a decoherence-free method in the sense that spontaneous emission and cavity damping are avoided.
We consider stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) processes in tripod systems and show how to generate purely geometric phase changes of the quantum states involved. The geometric phases are controlled by three laser fields where pulse shapes, relative field strength and phases can be controlled. We present a robust set of universal gates for quantum computing based on these geometric phases: a one-qubit phase gate, a Hadamard gate and a two-qubit phase gate.
We study a 2-qubit nuclear spin system for realizing an arbitrary geometric quantum phase gate by means of non-adiabatic operation. A single magnetic pulse with multi harmonic frequencies is applied to manipulate the quantum states of 2-qubit instantly. Using resonant transition approximation, the time dependent Hamiltonian of two nuclear spins can be solved analytically. The time evolution of the wave function is obtained without adiabatic approximation. The parameters of magnetic pulse, such as the frequency, amplitude, phase of each harmonic part as well as the time duration of the pulse, a…
Adiabatic or slowly varying gate operations are typically required in order to remain within the qubit subspace in an anharmonic oscillator. However significant speed ups are possible by using the two quadrature derivative-removal-by-adiabatic-gate(DRAG) technique, where a second time derivative pulse component burns a spectral hole near an unwanted transition. It is shown here, that simultaneous optimization of the detuning and the pulse norm in addition, further reduces leakage errors and significantly improve gate fidelities. However, with this optimization accounting for the AC Stark shift…
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gate in decoherence-free subspaces is of greatly practical importance due to its built-in fault tolerance, coherence stabilization virtues, and short run-time. Here we propose some compact schemes to implement two- and three-qubit controlled unitary quantum gates and Fredkin gate. For the controlled unitary quantum gates, the unitary operator acting on the target qubit is an arbitrary single-qubit gate operation. The controlled quantum gates can be directly implemented using non-adiabatic holonomy in decoherence-free subspaces and the required resource for the d…
We introduce a twisted Heisenberg-type interaction Hamiltonian, a Heisenberg-type spin interaction where the coordinates of the second qubit are twisted according to a unitary gate. We develop parallelizable adiabatic gate teleportation (PAGT) where a sequence of unitary gates is performed in a single step of the adiabatic process. In PAGT, numeric calculations suggest the necessary time for the adiabatic evolution implementing a sequence of $L$ unitary gates increases at most as $O(L^5)$. However, we show that it has the interesting property that it can map the temporal order of gates to the …
We show in this Letter that the ground state degeneracy associated with the presence of non-Abelian anyons can be probed by using an adiabatic cooling process based on the non-Abelian entropy. In particular, we show that when the number of such anyons is increased adiabatically at sufficiently low temperatures, the non-Abelian liquid undergoes cooling, whereas heating occurs in the Abelian case. Estimates are provided for the cooling power produced by the non-Abelian anyon refrigerator, and its implementation in non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids is discussed.
High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration ti…
Based on a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) scheme, we theoretically design and experimentally realize a set of high-fidelity single-qubit quantum gates in a superconducting Xmon qubit system. Through a precise microwave control, the qubit is driven to follow a fast `adiabatic' trajectory with the assistance of a counter-diabatic field and the correction of derivative removal by adiabatic gates. The experimental measurements of quantum process tomography and interleaved randomized benchmarking show that the process fidelities of our STA quantum gates are higher than 94.9% and the gate fideliti…
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors. However, all the previous schemes have to use at least two sequentially implemented gates to realize a general one-qubit gate. In this paper, we put forward a novelty scheme by which one can directly realize an arbitrary holonomic one-qubit gate with a single-shot implementation, avoiding the extra work of combining two gates into one. Based on a three-level model driven by laser pulses, we show that any single-qubit holonomic gate can be realized by varying the detuning,…
The robustness to different sources of error of the scheme for non-adiabatic holonomic gates proposed in [New J. Phys. {\bf 14}, 103035 (2012)] is investigated. Open system effects as well as errors in the driving fields are considered. It is found that the gates can be made error resilient by using sufficiently short pulses. The principal limit of how short the pulses can be made is given by the breakdown of the quasi-monochromatic approximation. A comparison with the resilience of adiabatic gates is carried out.
For a frequency-tunable two-qubit system, a controlled-Z (CZ) gate can be realized by adiabatically driving the qubit system through an avoided level crossing between an auxiliary state and computational levels. Here, we theoretically propose a fast CZ gate using a shortcut-to-adiabaticity (STA). Experimentally, the STA CZ gate is implemented with a 52 ns control pulse for two coupled superconducting Xmon qubits. Measured fidelity of the STA CZ gate is higher than 96.0%, in both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking. The protocol allows a flexible design of the evolution time …
The goal of this paper is to introduce building blocks for adiabatic quantum algorithms. Adiabatic quantum computing uses the principle of quantum annealing, which implies that a carefully controlled energy solution is optimal and corresponds to minimizing a discrete function. The input function can be influenced by rewards and penalties to favor a solution that meets restrictions that are imposed by the problem. We show how to accomplish this influence for gates in adiabatic quantum computing, particularly the controlled-NOT gate (CNOT gate) which is fundamental to all quantum gates on two or…
Adiabatic techniques have much potential to realise practical and robust optical waveguide devices. Traditionally photonic elements are limited to coupling schemes that rely on proximity to nearest neighbour elements. We combine adiabatic passage with a continuum based long-range optical bus to break free from such topological restraints and thereby outline a new approach to photonic quantum gate design. We explicitly show designs for adiabatic quantum gates that produce a Hadamard, 50:50 and 1/3:2/3 beam splitter, and non-deterministic CNOT gate based on planar thin, shallow ridge waveguides.…
In this work Controlled phase shift gates are implemented on a qaudrupolar system, by using non-adiabatic geometric phases. A general procedure is given, for implementing controlled phase shift gates in an 'N' level system. The utility of such controlled phase shift gates, is demonstrated here by implementing 3-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm on a 7/2 quadrupolar nucleus oriented in a liquid crystal matrix.
We show that with adiabatic passage, one can reliably drive two-photon optical transitions between the ground states and interacting Rydberg states in a pair of atoms. For finite Rydberg interaction strengths a new adiabatic pathway towards the doubly Rydberg excited state is identified when a constant detuning is applied with respect to an intermediate optically excited level. The Rydberg interaction among the excited atoms provides a phase that may be used to implement quantum gate operations on atomic ground state qubits.
In this paper we study the implementation of non-adiabatic geometrical quantum gates with in semiconductor quantum dots. Different quantum information enconding/manipulation schemes exploiting excitonic degrees of freedom are discussed. By means of the Aharanov-Anandan geometrical phase one can avoid the limitations of adiabatic schemes relying on adiabatic Berry phase; fast geometrical quantum gates can be in principle implemented
We propose a scheme for the construction of a CNOT gate by adiabatic passage in an optical cavity. In opposition to a previously proposed method, the technique is not based on fractional adiabatic passage, which requires the control of the ratio of two pulse amplitudes. Moreover, the technique constitutes a decoherence-free method in the sense that spontaneous emission and cavity damping are avoided since the dynamics follows dark states.
We propose an alternative scheme of shortcuts to quantum phase gate in a much shorter time based on the approach of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED) systems. This scheme can be used to perform one-qubit phase gate, two-qubit controlled phase gate and also multiqubit controlled phase gate. The strict numerical simulation for some quantum gates are given, and demonstrate that the total operation time of our scheme is shorter than previous schemes and very robustness against decoherence.
Numerical simulation results are presented which suggest that a class of non-adiabatic rapid passage sweeps first realized experimentally in 1991 should be capable of implementing a set of quantum gates that is universal for one-qubit unitary operations and whose elements operate with error probabilities per operation P < 10^{-4}. The sweeps are non-composite and generate controllable quantum interference effects which allow the one-qubit gates produced to operate non-adiabatically while maintaining high accuracy. The simulations suggest that the one-qubit gates produced by these sweeps show p…
We give a gauge description of the adiabatic charge pumping in closed systems, both in Abelian and non-Abelian processes, and by means of asymptotic Wilson loops in a suitable parameter manifold. Our geometric formulation provides new insights into this issue, and a very simple algorithm for numerical computations. Indeed, as we show first, discretized Berry--Wilczeck--Zee holonomies are easy to implement. Finally, we study non-Abelian pumping in a solvable four-state model, already used in several contexts, to demonstrate the relevance of our approach.
We investigate the effects of systematic errors of the control parameters on single-qubit gates based on non-adiabatic non-Abelian geometric holonomies and those relying on purely dynamical evolution. It is explicitly shown that the systematic error in the Rabi frequency of the control fields affects these two kinds of gates in different ways. In the presence of this systematic error, the transformation produced by the non-adiabatic non-Abelian geometric gate is not unitary in the computational space, and the resulting gate infidelity is larger than that with the dynamical method. Our results …

We check a recent proposal [H. Goto and K. Ichimura Phys. Rev. A 70, 012305 (2004)] for controlled phase gate through adiabatic passage under the influence of spontaneous emission and the cavity decay. We show a modification of above proposal could be used to generate the necessary conditional phase gates in the two-qubit Grover search. Conditioned on no photon leakage either from the atomic excited state or from the cavity mode during the gating period, we numerically analyze the success probability and the fidelity of the two-qubit conditional phase gate by adiabatic passage. The comparison …
The non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation with the advantages of fast and robustness attracts widespread attention in recent years. Here, we propose the first scheme for realizing universal single-qubit gates based on an optomechanical system working with the non-adiabatic geometric phases. Our quantum gates are robust to the control errors and the parameter fluctuations, and have unique functions to achieve the quantum state transfer and entanglement generation between cavities. We discuss the corresponding experimental parameters and give some simulations. Our scheme may have the pract…
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 080502 (2005)], Zheng proposed a scheme for implementing a conditional phase shift via adiabatic passages. The author claims that the gate is "neither of dynamical nor geometric origin" on the grounds that the Hamiltonian does not follow a cyclic change. He further argues that "in comparison with the adiabatic geometric gates, the nontrivial cyclic loop is unnecessary, and thus the errors in obtaining the required solid angle are avoided, which makes this new kind of phase gates superior to the geometric gates." In this Comment, we point out that geometric operations, …
We show that some composite pulses widely employed in NMR experiments are regarded as non-adiabatic geometric quantum gates with Aharanov-Anandan phases. Thus, we reveal the presence of a fundamental issue on quantum mechanics behind the traditional technique of the composite pulses. To examine the robustness of such composite pulses against fluctuations, we present a practical noise model in a two-level system. Then, we find that the composite pulses possesses purely geometrical nature even under a specific type of fluctuations.
Demonstration of Majorana non-Abelian properties is a major challenge in the field of topological superconductivity. In this work, we propose a minimal device and protocol for testing non-Abelian properties using charge-transfer operations between a quantum dot and two Majorana bound states combined with reading the parity state using a second dot. We use an adiabatic perturbation theory to find fast adiabatic paths to perform operations and to account for nonadiabatic errors. We find the ideal parameter sweep and a region in parameter space which reduces the charge-transfer operation time 1-2…
We propose a robust scheme involving atoms fixed in an optical cavity to directly implement the universal controlled-unitary gate. The present technique based on adiabatic passage uses novel dark states well suited for the controlled-rotation operation. We show that these dark states allow the robust implementation of a gate that is a generalisation of the controlled-unitary gate to the case where the control qubit can be selected to be an arbitrary state. This gate has potential applications to the rapid implementation of quantum algorithms such as of the projective measurement algorithm. Thi…
The difficulty in producing precisely timed and controlled quantum gates is a significant source of error in many physical implementations of quantum computers. Here we introduce a simple universal primitive, adiabatic gate teleportation, which is robust to timing errors and many control errors and maintains a constant energy gap throughout the computation above a degenerate ground state space. Notably this construction allows for geometric robustness based upon the control of two independent qubit interactions. Further, our piecewise adiabatic evolution easily relates to the quantum circuit m…
Geometric manipulation of a quantum system offers a method for fast, universal, and robust quantum information processing. Here, we propose a scheme for universal all-geometric quantum computation using non-adiabatic quantum holonomies. We propose three different realizations of the scheme based on an unconventional use of quantum dot and single-molecule magnet devices, which offer promising scalability and robust efficiency.
We propose to apply stimulated adiabatic passage to transfer atoms from their ground state into Rydberg excited states. Atoms a few micrometers apart experience a dipole-dipole interaction among Rydberg states that is strong enough to shift the atomic resonance and inhibit excitation of more than a single atom. We show that the adiabatic passage in the presence of this interaction between two atoms leads to robust creation of maximally entangled states and to two-bit quantum gates. For many atoms, the excitation blockade leads to an effective implementation of collective-spin and Jaynes-Cummin…
We propose a method to design pulses in a resonant three-level system to enhance the robustness of non-adiabatic geometric gate operations. By optimizing the shape of the pulse envelope, we show that the gate operations are more robust against frequency detuning than they are with Gaussian and square pulses. Our method provides a way to design pulses that can be employed in a system where robustness against frequency variations or inhomogeneous broadening is required, and may be extended to ensure robustness against other physical imperfections such as intensity fluctuations and random noises.
High-fidelity quantum operations are a key requirement for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. In electron spin resonance, manipulation of the quantum spin is usually achieved with time-dependent microwave fields. In contrast to the conventional dynamic approach, adiabatic geometric phase operations are expected to be less sensitive to certain kinds of noise and field inhomogeneities. Here, we investigate such phase gates applied to electron spins both through simulations and experiments, showing that the adiabatic geometric phase gate is indeed inherently robust against inhomogenei…
We extend recent work on a leakage-protected, adiabatic entangling gate for exchange-only spin qubits [Doherty and Wardrop, PRL 111, 050503 (2013)] by adapting to a setting where single spins are not assumed to be polarized on preparation. Previous gate constructions do not function correctly when "gauge spins" are uninitialized, because the entangling gate has different, non-trivial action in different gauge subspaces. Our construction inherits many of the desirable features of the previous work while addressing the gauge-dependent behavior. Using numerical simulation, we show that the result…
We introduce a shortcut to the adiabatic gate teleportation model of quantum computation. More specifically, we determine fast local counterdiabatic Hamiltonians able to implement teleportation as a universal computational primitive. In this scenario, we provide the counterdiabatic driving for arbitrary n-qubit gates, which allows to achieve universality through a variety of gate sets. Remarkably, our approach maps the superadiabatic Hamiltonian for an arbitrary n-qubit gate teleportation into the implementation of a rotated superadiabatic dynamics of an n-qubit state teleportation. This resul…
In this paperwe propose two theoretical schemes for implementation of quantum phase gates by engineering the phase-sensitive dark state of two atoms subjected to Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. Combining the conventional adiabatic techniques and currently developed approaches of phase control, a feasible proposal for implementation of a geometric phase gate is presented, where the conditional phase shift (Berry phase) is achieved by adiabatically and cyclically changing the parameters of the driving fields. Here we find that the geometric phase acquired is related to the way how the relative phas…

Stabilized cat codes can provide a biased noise channel with a set of bias-preserving (BP) gates, which can significantly reduce the resource overhead for fault-tolerant quantum computing. All existing schemes of BP gates, however, require adiabatic quantum evolution, with performance limited by excitation loss and non-adiabatic errors during the adiabatic gates. In this work, we apply a derivative-based leakage suppression technique to overcome non-adiabatic errors, so that we can implement fast BP gates on Kerr-cat qubits with improved gate fidelity while maintaining high noise bias. When ap…
One scheme is presented to construct the robust multi-qubit arbitrary-phase controlled-phase gate (CPG) with one control and multiple target qubits in Rydberg atoms using the Lewis-Riesenfeld (LR) invariant method. The scheme is not limited by adiabatic condition while preserves the robustness against control parameter variations of adiabatic evolution. Comparing with the adiabatic case, our scheme does not require very strong Rydberg interaction strength. Taking the construction of two-qubit $π$ CPG as an example, our scheme is more robust against control parameter variations than non-adiabat…
A controlled-phase gate was demonstrated in superconducting Xmon transmon qubits with fidelity reaching 99.4%, relying on the adiabatic interaction between the |11> and |02> states. Here we explain the theoretical concepts behind this protocol that achieves fast gate times with only $σ_z$ control of the Hamiltonian, based on a theory of non-linear mapping of state errors to a power spectral density and use of optimal window functions. With a solution given in the Fourier basis, optimization is shown to be straightforward for practical cases of an arbitrary state change and finite bandwidth of …
We propose schemes of controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates with ultracold neutral atoms based on deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage of the Stark-tuned Förster resonance of Rydberg states. The effect of deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage in a two-level quantum system has been analyzed in detail. Adiabatic rapid passage using nonlinearly chirped pulses with rectangle intensity profile has been discussed. Nonlinear time dependence of the energy detuning from the Förster resonance is used to achieve a high fidelity of population transfer…
Quantum computing and quantum simulation can be implemented by concatenation of one- and two-qubit gates and interactions. For most physical implementations, however, it may be advantageous to explore state components and interactions that depart from this universal paradigm and offer faster or more robust access to more advanced operations on the system. In this article, we show that adiabatic passage along the dark eigenstate of excitation exchange interactions can be used to implement fast multi-qubit Toffoli (C$_k$-NOT) and fan-out (C-NOT$^k$) gates. This mechanism can be realized by simul…
We analyze neutral atom Rydberg $C_Z$ gates based on adiabatic pulses applied symmetrically to both atoms. Analysis with smooth pulse shapes and Cs atom parameters predicts the gates can create Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}>0.999$ using adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses. With globally optimized adiabatic pulse shapes, in a two-photon excitation process, we generate Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}=0.997$. The analysis fully accounts for spontaneous emission from intermediate and Rydberg states, including the Rydberg lifetime in a room temperature environment, but does not i…
We examine the realization of a quantum CNOT gate by adiabatic operations. The principles of such systems and their analysis are briefly discussed and a model consisting of two weakly coupled double- potential well qubits is studied numerically. Regions of the parameter space with suitable well-defined sets of wavefunctions are found, in which then an adiabatic sweep of an external bias produces the switching behavior of CNOT. Results are presented on the adiabatic condition and the identification with the parameters of a flux-coupled two-SQUID system is given. For typical parameters adiabatic t…
We introduce a self-consistent framework for the analysis of both Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases associated with open quantum systems, undergoing cyclic adiabatic evolution. We derive a general expression for geometric phases, based on an adiabatic approximation developed within an inherently open-systems approach. This expression provides a natural generalization of the analogous one for closed quantum systems, and we prove that it satisfies all the properties one might expect of a good definition of a geometric phase, including gauge invariance. A striking consequence is the emerge…
