In this contribution we discuss how to prepare some possible detectors - only silicon option being considered, for the new era of HEP challenges because the bulk displacement damage in the detector, consequence of irradiation, produces effects at the device level that limit their long time utilisation, increasing the leakage current and the depletion potential, eventually up to breakdown, and thus affecting the lifetime of detector systems. Physical phenomena that conduce to the degradation of the detector are analysed both at the material and device levels, and some predictions of the time degradation of silicon detectors in the radiation environments expected in the LHC machine upgrade in luminosity and energy as SLHC or VLHC, or at ULHC are given. Possible effects at the detector level after high energy cosmic proton bombardment are investigated as well. Time dependences of these device parameters are studied in conditions of continuous irradiation and the technological options for detector materials are discussed, to obtain devices harder to radiation.
Several future high-energy physics facilities are currently being planned. The proposed projects include high energy $e^+ e^-$ circular and linear colliders, hadron colliders and muon colliders, while the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) has already been approved for construction at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Each proposal has its own advantages and disadvantages in term of readiness, cost, schedule and physics reach, and each proposal requires the design and production of specific new detectors. This paper first presents the performances required to the future silicon tracking systems at …
Hybrid silicon pixel detectors are currently used in the innermost tracking system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. Radiation tolerance up to fluences expected for a few years of running of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has already been proved, although some degradation of the part of the silicon detector closer to the interaction point is expected. During the LHC upgrade phases, the level of dose foreseen for the silicon pixel detector will be much higher. To face this aspect, dedicated irradiation tests with fluences above $\mathcal{O}(10^{15})$ n$_{\textrm{eq}}$/cm$^2$ have …
Technological tests of Total Ionizing Dose effects are required not only for silicon particle sensors developed in high energy physics experiments, but also for electronic devices and semiconductor elements used in commercial, automotive and space applications. Using x-ray irradiators, these technological tests and studies can be performed not only in facilities explicitly built for this mission, but also in medical or biological research facilities when some minima requirements are satisfied. Generally this irradiation can be performed without interfering with the medical and biological activ…
We have developed a neutron imaging sensor based on an INTPIX4-SOI pixelated silicon device. Neutron irradiation tests are performed at several neutron facilities to investigate sensor's responses for neutrons. Detection efficiency is measured to be around $1.5$\% for thermal neutrons. Upper bound of spatial resolution is evaluated to be $4.1 \pm 0.2 ~μ$m in terms of a standard deviation of the line spread function.
A highly granular silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (SiW-ECAL) is the reference design of the ECAL for International Large Detector concept, one of the two detector concepts for the future International Linear Collider. Prototypes for this type of detector are developed within the CALICE Collaboration. The technological prototype addresses technical challenges such as integrated front-end electronics or compact layer and readout design. A stack of 7 layers was compiled and tested at DESY test beam facilities in 2017. We present preliminary results on the properties of the electromag…
Contact resistance and thermal degradation of metal-silicon contacts are challenges in nanoscale CMOS as well as in power device applications. Titanium silicide (TiSi) contacts are commonly used metal-silicon contacts, but are known to diffuse into the active region under high current stress. In this paper we show that a graphenic carbon (C) contact deposited on n-type silicon (C-Si) by CVD, has the same low Schottky barrier height of 0.45 eV as TiSi, but a much improved reliability against high current stress. The C-Si contact is over 100 million times more stable against high current stress …
A newly developed segmented YSO scintillator detector was implemented for the first time at the RI-beam Factory at RIKEN Nishina Center as an implantation-decay counter. The results from the experiment demonstrate that the detector is a viable alternative to conventional silicon-strip detectors with its good timing resolution and high detection efficiency for ${\rm β}$ particles. A Position-Sensitive Photo-Multiplier Tube (PSPMT) is coupled with a $48\times48$ segmented YSO crystal. To demonstrate its capabilities, a known short-lived isomer in $^{76}$Ni and the ${\rm β}$ decay of $^{74}$Co we…
The SiliconMicro-strip Tracker (SMT) at the DØ experiment in the Fermilab Tevatron collider has been operating since 2001. In 2006, an additional layer, referred to as 'Layer 0', was installed to improve impact parameter resolution and compensate for detector degradation due to radiation damage to the original innermost SMT layer. The SMT detector provides valuable tracking and vertexing information for the experiment. This contribution will highlight aspects of the long term operation of the SMT, including the impact of the silicon readout test-stand. Due to the full integration of the test-s…
Silicon tracking detectors provide excellent spatial resolution, and so can provide excellent momentum resolution for energetic charged particles, even in compact detectors. However, at lower momenta, multiple scattering in the silicon degrades the momentum resolution. We present an alternate method to measure momentum and alleviate this degradation, using silicon detectors that also incorporate timing measurements. By using timing information between two silicon layers, it is possible to solve for the the radius of curvature, and hence the particle momentum, independent of multiple scattering…
The research and development of silicon-based X-ray fluorescence detectors achieved its submicron sensitivity. Its initial use is intended for in-situ beam monitoring at advanced light-source facilities. The effectively functioning prototype fully leveraged technologies and techniques from a wide array of scientific disciplines: X-ray fluorescence technique, photon scattering and spectroscopy, astronomical photometry, semiconductor physics, materials science, microelectronics, analytical and numerical modelling, and high-performance computing. In the design stage, the systematic two-track appr…
International Large Detector (ILD) adopts Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) for precise measurement of multiple jets. The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of ILD has two candidates sensor technologies for PFA, which are pixelized silicon sensors and scintillator-strips with silicon photomultipliers. Pixelized silicon sensors have higher granularity for PFA, however they have an issue of cost reduction. In contrast, scintillator-strips have an advantage of relatively low cost and a disadvantage of degradation of position resolution by ghost hits, which are generated by orthogonal arrangement. Hyb…
This work focuses on the investigation of radiation induced defects responsible for the degradation of silicon detectors. Comparative studies of the defects induced by irradiation with 60Co- rays, 6 and 15 MeV electrons, 23 GeV protons and 1 MeV equivalent reactor neutrons revealed the existence of point defects and cluster related centers having a strong impact on damage properties of Si diodes. The detailed relation between the microscopic reasons as based on defect analysis and their macroscopic consequences for detector performance are presented. In particular, it is shown that the changes…

The Mu2e calorimeter is composed by 1400 un-doped CsI crystals coupled to large area UV extended Silicon Photomultipliers arranged in two annular disks. This calorimeter has to provide precise information on energy, timing and position. It should also be fast enough to handle the high rate background and it must operate and survive in a high radiation environment. Simulation studies estimated that, in the hottest regions, each crystal will absorb a dose of 300 Gy and will be exposed to a neutron fluency of 6 x 10^{11} n/cm^2 in 3 years of running. Test of un-doped CsI crystals irradiated up to…
In the last years, high-resolution time tagging has emerged as the tool to tackle the problem of high-track density in the detectors of the next generation of experiments at particle colliders. Time resolutions below 50ps and event average repetition rates of tens of MHz on sensor pixels having a pitch of 50$μ$m are typical minimum requirements. This poses an important scientific and technological challenge on the development of particle sensors and processing electronics. The TIMESPOT initiative (which stands for TIME and SPace real-time Operating Tracker) aims at the development of a full pr…
Non-ionising energy loss of radiation produces point defects and defect clusters in silicon, which result in a signifcant degradation of sensor performance. In this contribution results from TSC (Thermally Stimulated Current) defect spectroscopy for silicon pad diodes irradiated by electrons to fluences of a few $10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and energies between 3.5 and 27 MeV for isochronal annealing between 80 and 280°C, are presented. A method based on SRH (Shockley-Read-Hall) statistics is introduced, which assumes that the ionisation energy of the defects in a cluster depends on the fraction of occ…

The replacement of the existing endcap calorimeter in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector for the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), scheduled for 2027, will be a high granularity calorimeter. It will provide detailed position, energy, and timing information on electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the immense pileup of the HL-LHC. The High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) will use 120-, 200-, and 300-$μ\textrm{m}$ thick silicon (Si) pad sensors as the main active material and will sustain 1-MeV neutron equivalent fluences up to about $10^{16}~\textrm{n}_\textrm{eq}\textrm{cm}^{-2}$. In 2019 the Belle II experiment started data taking at the asymmetric SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan) operating at the Y(4S) resonance. Belle II will search for new physics beyond the Standard Model by collecting an integrated luminosity of 50~ab$^{-1}$. The silicon vertex detector (SVD), consisting of four layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors. The SVD extrapolates the tracks to the inner pixel detector (PXD) with enough precision to correctly identify hits in the PXD belonging to the track. In addition the SVD has standalone tracking capability …
