Silicon tracking detectors provide excellent spatial resolution, and so can provide excellent momentum resolution for energetic charged particles, even in compact detectors. However, at lower momenta, multiple scattering in the silicon degrades the momentum resolution. We present an alternate method to measure momentum and alleviate this degradation, using silicon detectors that also incorporate timing measurements. By using timing information between two silicon layers, it is possible to solve for the the radius of curvature, and hence the particle momentum, independent of multiple scattering within the silicon. We consider three examples: an all-silicon central tracker for an electron-ion collider, a simplified version of the CMS detector, and a forward detector for an electron-ion collider. For a 75 cm diameter tracker in a 1.5 T magnetic field, timing can improve the momentum determination for particles with momentum below 500 MeV/c. In the 3.8 T CMS magnetic field and 1.2 m radius tracker, timing can improve tracking up to momenta of 1.3 GeV/c. The resolution is best at mid-rapidity. We also discuss a simpler system, consisting of a single timing detector outside an all-silicon tracker.
The CMS-TOTEM Precision Proton Spectrometer (CT-PPS) is an approved project to add tracking and timing information at approximately $\pm$210~m from the interaction point around the CMS detector. It is designed to operate at high luminosity with up to 50 interactions per 25~ns bunch crossing to perform measurements of e.g. the quartic gauge couplings and search for rare exclusive processes. During 2016, CT-PPS took data in normal high-luminosity proton-proton LHC collisions. In the coming years, high radiation doses and large multiple-vertex interactions will represent difficult challenges that…
High precision timing, high rate calorimeters, and radiation resistance are becoming an important issue in particle physics especially in Energy and Intensity Frontiers. We discuss doped Zinc Oxide (ZnO:Ga or GZO; ZnO:X where X is Al, Cu or others) as a very fast scintillator and wavelength shifter (WLS), Total internal reflection films, and PMT capable of counting at 300 MHz with 10 ps timing precision, with superior radiation resistance.
Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) is the baseline sensing technology of the recently proposed Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP) end-cap timing detectors (MTD) at the Atlas and CMS experiments. The current MTD sensor is designed as a multi-pad matrix detector delivering a poor position resolution, due to the relatively large pad area, around 1 $mm^2$; and a good timing resolution, around 20-30 ps. Besides, in his current technological incarnation, the timing resolution of the MTD LGAD sensors is severely degraded once the MIP particle hits the inter-pad region since the signal amplification is m…
As part of the Phase II upgrade program, the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector will incorporate a new timing layer designed to measure minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with a time resolution of $\sim$30 ps. Precision timing will mitigate the impact of the challenging levels of pileup expected at the High Luminosity LHC. The time information assigned to each track will enable the use of 4D-vertexing which will render a 5-fold pile-up reduction, thus recovering the current conditions. Precision timing will also enable new time-based isolations and improved $b$-tagging algorithms. All of this…
This paper reports the last technological development on the Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) and introduces a new architecture of these detectors called inverse-LGAD (iLGAD). Both approaches are based on the standard Avalanche Photo Diodes (APD) concept, commonly used in optical and X-ray detection applications, including an internal multiplication of the charge generated by radiation. The multiplication is inherent to the basic n++-p+-p structure, where the doping profile of the p+ layer is optimized to achieve high field and high impact ionization at the junction. The LGAD structures are …
The next generation of collider experiments require tracking detectors with extreme performance capabilities in terms of spatial resolution (tens of $μ\text{m}$), radiation hardness ($10^{17}~1~$MeV n$_{eq}/$cm$^2$) and timing resolution (tens of ps). 3D silicon sensors, recently developed within the TimeSPOT initiative, offer a viable solution to cope with such demanding requirements. In order to accurately characterize the timing performance of these new sensors, several read-out boards, based on discrete active components, have been designed, assembled, and tested. The same electronics is a…
We present the timing characteristics of the flash ADC readout of the GlueX forward calorimeter, which depends on precise measurement of arrival time of pulses from FEU 84-3 photomultiplier tubes to suppress backgrounds. The tests presented were performed using two different 250 MHz prototype flash ADC devices, one with eight-bit and one with twelve-bit sampling depth. All measured time resolutions were better than 1 ns, independent of signal size, which is the design goal for the GlueX forward calorimeter. For pulses with an amplitude of 100 mV the timing resolution is 0.57 +- 0.18 ns, while …

In this White Paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we discuss aspects of precision timing within electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter systems for high-energy physics collider experiments. Areas of applications include particle identification, event and object reconstruction, and pileup mitigation. Two different system options are considered, namely cell-level timing capabilities covering the full detector volume, and dedicated timing layers integrated in calorimeter systems. A selection of technologies for the different approaches is also discussed.
The time precision achievable using standard analog methods is well known. Several expressions for timing methods using digitized signals have been recently proposed in workshops, conferences or training courses. Most of them are only partially exact. This paper presents a comprehensive calculation of the timing precision for algorithms using digital treatment of digitized signal to mimic analog discriminator-based methods. The results of these calculations are discussed for various cases of correlation between samples.
The past ten years have seen the advent of silicon-based precise timing detectors for charged particle tracking. The underlying reason for this evolution is a design innovation: the Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD). In its simplicity, the LGAD design is an obvious step with momentous consequences: low gain leads to large signals maintaining sensors stability and low noise, allowing sensor segmentation. Albeit introduced for a different reason, to compensate for charge trapping in irradiated silicon sensors, LGAD found fertile ground in the design of silicon-based timing detectors. Spurred by th…
We present an optical-electronic approach to generating microwave signals with high spectral purity. By circumventing shot noise and operating near fundamental thermal limits, we demonstrate 10 GHz signals with an absolute timing jitter for a single hybrid oscillator of 420 attoseconds (1Hz - 5 GHz).
The prospect of pileup induced backgrounds at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has stimulated intense interest in technology for charged particle timing at high rates. In contrast to the role of timing for particle identification, which has driven incremental improvements in timing, the LHC timing challenge dictates a specific level of timing performance- roughly 20-30 picoseconds. Since the elapsed time for an LHC bunch crossing (with standard design book parameters) has an rms spread of 170 picoseconds, the $\sim50-100$ picosecond resolution now commonly achieved in TOF systems would be insu…
During the test measurements of the PMTs to be used in the future Borexino experiment, the data from 2200 PMT were accumulated. The unique timing characteristics of the apparatus used and the large statistics acquired, permit resololution of the fine structure of the ETL9351 PMT time response. A method to obtain the probability density function of the single photoelectron counting from the experimental data is proposed and applied to derive the PMT average characteristics. For the first time, an analytical model of the single photoelectron PMT time response is proposed, describing all the feat…
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is undergoing an extensive Phase II upgrade program to prepare for the challenging conditions of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). A new timing layer is designed to measure minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with a time resolution of 30 ps and a hermetic coverage up to a pseudo-rapidity of $|η|$ = 3. This MIP Timing Detector(MTD) will consist of a central barrel region based on LYSO:Ce crystals read out with SiPMs and two end-caps instrumented with radiation-tolerant Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGADs). The precision…
Central exclusive processes can be studied in CMS by combining the information of the central detector with the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS). PPS detectors, placed symmetrically at more than 200 m from the interaction point, can detect the scattered protons that survive the interaction. PPS has taken data at high luminosity while fully integrated in the CMS experiment. The total amount of collected data corresponds to more than 100 fb$^{-1}$ during the LHC Run 2. PPS consists of 3D silicon tracking stations as well as timing detectors that measure both the position and direction of prot…
The existing CMS endcap calorimeters will be replaced with a High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) for operation at the High Luminosity (HL) LHC. Radiation hardness and excellent physics performance will be achieved by utilising silicon pad sensors and SiPM-on-scintillator tiles with high longitudinal and transverse segmentation. One of the major challenges of the HL-LHC will be the high pileup environment, with interaction vertices spread not only in position, but also in time. In order to efficiently reject particles originating from pileup, precision timing information of the order of 30 ps …
In order to improve the time precision of detectors based on diamonds sensors we have built a detector with two scCVD layers connected in parallel to the same amplifier. This note describes the design and the first measurements of such a prototype performed on a particle beam at CERN. With this different configuration we have obtained an improvement on the timing precision of a factor of 1.6-1.7 with respect to a single layer scCVD diamond detector.
Detectors based on pixels with timing capabilities are gaining increasing importance in the last years. Various different developments are ongoing on solid state sensors to gain high-resolution performance at the sensor level, as for example LGAD sensors or 3D sensors. Intrinsic sensor time resolution around 20 ps have been recently obtained. The increasing performance on the sensor side strongly dem…

To guarantee the angular resolution, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) requires a 500ps (rms) timing synchronization among the 6866 detect units for its KM2A sub-detector array. The White Rabbit technology is applied which combines sub-nanosecond precision timing transfer and gigabit Ethernet data transfer over the same fiber media. Deployed on a wild field at 4300m a.s.l. altitude, the WR network must maintain the precision over a wide temperature range. The temperature effect on a small WR link is measured, and contributions from different components like optical fiber,…
We developed a beam telescope system comprising five layers of 300-$μ$m-thick INTPIX4NA monolithic pixel sensors with each pixel size of 17 $μ$m square. The sensors were fabricated using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The signal-to-noise ratio of 140--230 is realized at a bias voltage of 20~V. The tracker system was tested using a positron beam of 200--822 MeV/c, and various tracking methods are examined to optimize spatial precision achievable at these energies. Synchronous laser-microwave networks delivering attosecond timing precision are highly desirable in many advanced applications, such as geodesy, very-long-baseline interferometry, high-precision navigation and multi-telescope arrays. In particular, rapidly expanding photon science facilities like X-ray free-electron lasers and intense laser beamlines require system-wide attosecond-level synchronization of dozens of optical and microwave signals up to kilometer distances. Once equipped with such precision, these facilities will initiate radically new science by shedding light on molecular and a…
The prospect of pileup induced backgrounds at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has stimulated intense interest in developing technologies for charged particle detection with accurate timing at high rates. The required accuracy follows directly from the nominal interaction distribution within a bunch crossing ($σ_z\sim5$ cm, $σ_t\sim170$ ps). A time resolution of the order of 20-30 ps would lead to significant reduction of these backgrounds. With this goal, we present a new detection concept called PICOSEC, which is based on a "two-stage" Micromegas detector coupled to a Cherenkov radiator and …

For the advancement of the understanding of timing systematics in pixelized readout chips and for the benefit of future fast timing detectors to aid 4D tracking technology in the HL-LHC, we have performed detailed studies of the timing properties of the Timepix3, a hybrid pixel detector developed by the Medipix collaboration. These studies use three different measurement techniques to investigate the timing systematics of this detector: test pulses, testbeam, and a laser setup that we build for this work. The average delay over the pixel matrix is determined with the testbeam and the laser and…
This paper describes the performance of a prototype timing detector, based on 50 micrometer thick Ultra Fast Silicon Detector, as measured in a beam test using a 180 GeV/c momentum pion beam. The dependence of the time precision on the pixel capacitance and the bias voltage is investigated here. A timing precision from 30 ps to 100 ps, depending on the pixel capacitance, has been measured at a bias voltage of 180 V. Timing precision has also been measured as a function of the bias voltage.
The analog front-end for the Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) based precision timing application in the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) has been prototyped in a 65 nm CMOS mini-ASIC named ETROC0. Serving as the very first prototype of ETL readout chip (ETROC), ETROC0 aims to study and demonstrate the performance of the analog frontend, with the goal to achieve 40 to 50 ps time resolution per hit with LGAD (therefore reach about 30ps per track with two detector-layer hits per track). ETROC0 consists of preamplifier and discriminator stages, which amplifies the LGAD signal and generates digital …

One archetypal example is the evolution of silicon detectors, from a system with a few channels 30 years ago, to the tens of millions of independent pixels currently used to track charged particles in all major particle physics experiments. Nowadays, silicon detectors are ubiquitous not only in research laboratories but in almost every high-tech apparatus, from portable phones to hospitals. In this contribution, we present a new direct…
Electron tracking based Compton imaging is a key technique to improve the sensitivity of Compton cameras by measuring the initial direction of recoiled electrons. To realize this technique in semiconductor Compton cameras, we propose a new detector concept, Si-CMOS hybrid detector. It is a Si detector bump-bonded to a CMOS readout integrated circuit to obtain electron trajectory images. To acquire the energy and the event timing, signals from N-side are also read out in this concept. By using an ASIC for the N-side readout, the timing resolution of few us is achieved. In this paper, we present…
The structure of the CMS inner tracking system has been studied using nuclear interactions of hadrons striking its material. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded in 2015 at the LHC are used to reconstruct millions of secondary vertices from these nuclear interactions. Precise positions of the beam pipe and the inner tracking system elements, such as the pixel detector support tube, and barrel pixel detector inner shield and support rails, are determined using these vertices. These measurements are important for detector simulations, detector upgrades…

This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the …
High-time-resolution counters based on plastic scintillator with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout have been developed for applications to high energy physics experiments for which relatively large-sized counters are required. We have studied counter sizes up to $120\times40\times5$ mm^3 with series connection of multiple SiPMs to increase the sensitive area and thus achieve better time resolution. A readout scheme with analog shaping and digital waveform analysis is optimized to achieve the highest time resolution. The timing performance is measured using electrons from a Sr-90 radioacti…
