A class of conserved models of wealth distributions are studied where wealth (or money) is assumed to be exchanged between a pair of agents in a population like the elastically colliding molecules of a gas exchanging energy. All sorts of distributions from exponential (Boltzmann-Gibbs) to something like Gamma distributions and to that of Pareto's law (power law) are obtained out of such models with simple algorithmic exchange processes. Numerical inevstigations, analysis through transition matrix and a mean field approach are employed to understand the generative mechanisms. A general scenario is examined wherefrom a power law and other distributions can emerge.
In this work we study the individual strategies carried out by agents undergoing transactions in wealth exchange models. We analyze the role of risk propensity in the behavior of the agents and find a critical risk, such that agents with risk above that value always end up losing everything when the system approaches equilibrium. Moreover, we find that the wealth of the agents is maximum for a range of risk values that depends on particular characteristics of the model, such as the social protection factor. Our findings allow to determine a region of parameters for which the strategies of the …
This paper presents a physical perspective on the human migration phenomenon claiming that human social behaviors are somehow but not completely inspired by nature. Human displacement or migration in the world is highly affected by equivalent weighted wealth and multidimensional poverty distribution across countries. In this work, it has been shown that the equivalent weighted wealth as an important characteristic of a society can be introduced in a mathematical language in terms of a country gross productivity factor, safety and social factors, environmental and economic factors, political an…
Income and wealth distribution affect stability of a society to a large extent and high inequality affects it negatively. Moreover, in the case of developed countries, recently has been proven that inequality is closely related to all negative phenomena affecting society. So far, Econophysics papers tried to analyse income and wealth distribution by employing distributions such as Fermi-Dirac, Bose-Einstein, Maxwell-Boltzmann, lognormal (Gibrat), and exponential. Generally, distributions describe mostly income and less wealth distribution for low and middle income segment of population, which …
In this work, we modify the affine wealth model of wealth distributions to examine the effects of nonconstant redistribution on the very wealthy. Previous studies of this model, restricted to flat redistribution schemes, have demonstrated the presence of a phase transition to a partially wealth-condensed state, or "partial oligarchy," at the critical value of an order parameter. These studies have also indicated the presence of an exponential tail in wealth distribution precisely at criticality. Away from criticality, the tail was observed to be Gaussian. In this work, we generalize the flat r…
We study an agent-based model of evolution of wealth distribution in a macro-economic system. The evolution is driven by multiplicative stochastic fluctuations governed by the law of proportionate growth and interactions between agents. We are mainly interested in interactions increasing wealth inequality that is in a local implementation of the accumulated advantage principle. Such interactions destabilise the system. They are confronted in the model with a global regulatory mechanism which reduces wealth inequality. There are different scenarios emerging as a net effect of these two competin…
Using the empirical data from the Norwegian tax office, we analyse the wealth and income of the richest individuals in Norway during the period 2010--2013. We find that both annual income and wealth level of the richest individuals are describable using the Pareto law. We find that the robust mean Pareto exponent over the four-year period to be $\approx 2.3$ for income and $\approx 1.5$ for wealth.
Fokker-Planck Description of Wealth Dynamics and the Origin of Pareto's Law
所谓的财富分配的“庭院销售模型”假定,财富在经济主体之间转移是交易的结果,交易的规模与较不富裕的主体的财富成正比。在最近的工作中[B]。Boghosian,“Kinetics of Wealth and the Pareto Law”,{ \it Phys. Rev.
The paper provides a survey of results related to the "$κ$-generalized distribution", a statistical model for the size distribution of income and wealth. Topics include, among others, discussion of basic analytical properties, interrelations with other statistical distributions as well as aspects that are of special interest in the income distribution field, such as the Gini index and the Lorenz curve. An extension of the basic model that is most able to accommodate the special features of wealth data is also reviewed. The survey of empirical applications given in this paper shows the $κ$-gene…
We propose a set of conservative models in which agents exchange wealth with a preference in the choice of interacting agents in different ways. The common feature in all the models is that the temporary values of financial status of agents is a deciding factor for interaction. Other factors which may play important role are past interactions and wealth possessed by individuals. Wealth distribution, network properties and activity are the main quantities which have been studied. Evidence of phase transitions and other interesting features are presented. The results show that certain observatio…
Simple agent based exchange models are a commonplace in the study of wealth distribution in an artificial economy. Generally, in a system that is composed of many agents characterized by their wealth and risk-aversion factor, two agents are selected sequentially and randomly to exchange wealth, allowing for its redistribution. Here we analyze how the effect of a social protection policy, which favors agents of lower wealth during the exchange, influences stability and some relevant economic indicators of the system. On the other hand, we study how periods of interruption of these policies prod…
Breakdown of the mean-field approximation in a wealth distribution model
In this paper, we study the inequality indices for some models of wealth exchange. We calculated Gini index and newly introduced k-index and compare the results with reported empirical data available for different countries. We have found lower and upper bounds for the indices and discuss the efficiencies of the models. Some exact analytical calculations are given for a few cases. We also exactly compute the quantities for Gamma and double Gamma distributions.
We present a stochastic, agent-based, binary-transaction Asset-Exchange Model (AEM) for wealth distribution that allows for agents with negative wealth. This model retains certain features of prior AEMs such as redistribution and wealth-attained advantage, but it also allows for shifts as well as scalings of the agent density function. We derive the Fokker-Planck equation describing its time evolution and we describe its numerical solution, including a methodology for solving the inverse problem of finding the model parameters that best match empirical data. Using this methodology, we compare …
It has been pointed out by Patriarca et al. (2005) that the power-law tailed equilibrium distribution in heterogeneous kinetic exchange models with a distributed saving parameter can be resolved as a mixture of Gamma distributions corresponding to particular subsets of agents. Here, we propose a new four-parameter statistical distribution which is a $κ$-deformation of the Generalized Gamma distribution with a power-law tail, based on the deformed exponential and logarithm functions introduced by Kaniadakis(2001). We found that this new distribution is also an extension to the $κ$-Generalized d…
Role of Selective Interaction in Wealth Distribution
Socio-economic inequalities derived from an exhaustive wealth distribution is studied in a closed geographical region from Transylvania (Romania). Exhaustive wealth data is computed from the agricultural records of the Sancraiu commune for three different economic situations. The gathered data is spanning two different periods from the communist economy and the present situation after 31 years of free market economy in Romania. The local growth and reset model based on an analytically solvable master equation is used to describe the observed data. The model with realistically chosen growth and…
We consider a simple theoretical model to investigate the impact of inheritances on the wealth distribution. Wealth is described as a finite resource, which remains constant over different generations and is divided equally among offspring. All other sources of wealth are neglected. We consider different societies characterized by a different offspring probability distribution. We find that, if the population remains constant, the society reaches a stationary wealth distribution. We show that inequality emerges every time the number of children per family is not always the same. For realistic …
We introduce a minimal agent-based model to qualitatively conceptualize the allocation of limited wealth among more abundant opportunities. We study the interplay of power, satisfaction and frustration in distribution, concentration, and inequality of wealth. Our framework allows us to compare subjective measures of frustration and satisfaction to collective measures of fairness in wealth distribution, such as the Lorenz curve and the Gini index. We find that a completely libertarian, law-of-the-jungle setting, where every agent can acquire wealth from, or lose wealth to, anybody else invariab…
Over the last decades, the distribution of income and wealth has been deteriorating in many countries, leading to increased inequalities within and between societies. This tendency has revived the interest in the subject greatly, yet it still receives very little attention within the realm of mainstream economic thinking. One reason for this is that the basic paradigm of "standard economics", the representative-agent General Equilibrium framework, is badly equipped to cope with distributional issues. Here we argue that when the economy is treated as a complex system composed of many heterogene…
The recent book by T. Piketty (Capital in the Twenty-First Century) promoted the important issue of wealth inequality. In the last twenty years, physicists and mathematicians developed models to derive the wealth distribution using discrete and continuous stochastic processes (random exchange models) as well as related Boltzmann-type kinetic equations. In this literature, the usual concept of equilibrium in Economics is either replaced or completed by statistical equilibrium. In order to illustrate this activity with a concrete example, we present a stylised random exchange model for the distr…
The agent-based Yard-Sale model of wealth inequality is generalized to incorporate exponential economic growth and its distribution. The distribution of economic growth is nonuniform and is determined by the wealth of each agent and a parameter $λ$. Our numerical results indicate that the model has a critical point at $λ=1$ between a phase for $λ< 1$ with economic mobility and exponentially growing wealth of all agents and a non-stationary phase for $λ\geq 1$ with wealth condensation and no mobility. We define the energy of the system and show that the system can be considered to be in thermod…
A mean-field like stochastic evolution equation with growth and reset terms (LGGR model) is used to model wealth distribution in modern societies. The stationary solution of the model leads to an analytical form for the density function that is successful in describing the observed data for all wealth categories. In the limit of high wealth values the proposed density function has the accepted Tsallis-Pareto shape. Our results are in agreement with the predictions of an earlier approach based on a mean-field like wealth exchange process.
This paper studies the trading volumes and wealth distribution of a novel agent-based model of an artificial financial market. In this model, heterogeneous agents, behaving according to the Von Neumann and Morgenstern utility theory, may mutually interact. A Tobin-like tax (TT) on successful investments and a flat tax are compared to assess the effects on the agents' wealth distribution. We carry out extensive numerical simulations in two alternative scenarios: i) a reference scenario, where the agents keep their utility function fixed, and ii) a focal scenario, where the agents are adaptive a…
In this work we consider an agent based model in order to study the wealth distribution problem where the interchange is determined with a symmetric zero sum game. Simultaneously, the agents update their way of play trying to learn the optimal one. Here, the agents use mixed strategies. We study this model using both simulations and theoretical tools. We derive the equations for the learning mechanism, and we show that the mean strategy of the population satisfies an equation close to the classical replicator equation. Concerning the wealth distribution, there are two interesting situations de…
The dynamics of wealth distribution plays a critical role in the economic market, hence an understanding of its nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is of great importance to human society. For this aim, a simple and efficient one-dimensional (1D) lattice gas automaton (LGA) is presented for wealth distribution of agents with or without saving propensity. The LGA comprises two stages, i.e., random propagation and economic transaction. During the former phase, an agent either remains motionless or travels to one of its neighboring empty sites with a certain probability. In the subsequent proced…

We study the wealth distribution of UK households through a detailed analysis of data from wealth surveys and rich lists, and propose a non-linear Kesten process to model the dynamics of household wealth. The main features of our model are that we focus on wealth growth and disregard exchange, and that the rate of return on wealth is increasing with wealth. The linear case with wealth-independent return rate has been well studied, leading to a log-normal wealth distribution in the long time limit which is essentially independent of initial conditions. We find through theoretical analysis and s…
The spreading of Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the close link between economics and health in the context of emergency management. A widespread vaccination campaign is considered the main tool to contain the economic consequences. This paper will focus, at the level of wealth distribution modelling, on the economic improvements induced by the vaccination campaign in terms of its effectiveness rate. The economic trend during the pandemic is evaluated resorting to a mathematical model joining a classical compartmental model including vaccinated individuals with a kinetic model of wealth dist…
