New methods of flow visualization near absolute zero have opened the way to directly compare quantum turbulence (in superfluid helium) to classical turbulence (in ordinary fluids such as air or water) and explore analogies and differences. We present results of numerical simulations in which we examine the statistics of the superfluid acceleration in thermal counterflow. Wall turbulence has a sublayer where one-point statistics, e.g., the mean velocity and the variances of some velocity fluctuations, vary logarithmically with the distance from the wall. This logarithmic scaling is found here for two-point statistics or specifically two-point cumulants of those fluctuations by means of experiments in a wind tunnel. We study the dynamics of a flexible fiber freely moving in a three-dimensional fully-developed turbulent field and present a phenomenological theory to describe the interaction between the fiber elasticity and the turbulent flow. The statistics of the deformation and breakup of neutrally buoyant sub-Kolmogorov ellipsoidal drops is investigated via Lagrangian simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The statistical properties of fluid particles transported by a fully developed turbulent flow are investigated by means of high resolution direct numerical simulations. Single trajectory statistics is investigated in a time range spanning more than three decades, from less than a tenth of the Kolmogorov timescale up to one large-eddy turnover time. Acceleration and velocity statistics show a neat quantitative agreement with recent experimental results. Trapping effects in vortex filaments give rise to enhanced small-scale intermittency on Lagrangian observables.
Superstatistics is a `statistics of a statistics' relevant for driven nonequilibrium systems with fluctuating intensive parameters. It contains Tsallis statistics as a special case. We show that the probability density functions of velocity differences and accelerations measured in Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence experiments are well reproduced by simple superstatistics models. We solve the problem of spatial distribution of inertial particles that sediment in Navier-Stokes turbulence with small ratio $Fr$ of acceleration of fluid particles to acceleration of gravity $g$. The particles are driven by linear drag and have arbitrary inertia. We demonstrate that independently of the particles' size or density the particles distribute over fractal set with log-normal statistics determined completely by the Kaplan-Yorke dimension $D_{KY}$.
