Three-dimensional miscible Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) turbulence at small Atwood number and at Prandtl number one is investigated by means of high resolution direct numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations. RT turbulence is a paradigmatic time-dependent turbulent system in which the integral scale grows in time following the evolution of the mixing region. In order to fully characterize the statistical properties of the flow, both temporal and spatial behavior of relevant statistical indicators have been analyzed.
Scaling of both global quantities ({\it e.g.}, Rayleigh, Nusselt and Reynolds numbers) and scale dependent observables built in terms of velocity and temperature fluctuations are considered. We extend the mean-field analysis for velocity and temperature fluctuations to take into account intermittency, both in time and space domains. We show that the resulting scaling exponents are compatible with those of classical Navier--Stokes turbulence advecting a passive scalar at comparable Reynolds number. Our results support the scenario of universality of turbulence with respect to both the injection mechanism and the geometry of the flow.
The Rayleigh (Ra) and Prandtl (Pr) number scaling of the Nusselt number Nu, the Reynolds number Re, the temperature fluctuations, and the kinetic and thermal dissipation rates is studied for (numerical) homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard turbulence, i.e., Rayleigh-Benard turbulence with periodic boundary conditions in all directions and a volume forcing of the temperature field by a mean gradient. This system serves as model system for the bulk of Rayleigh-Benard flow and therefore as model for the so called ``ultimate regime of thermal convection''. With respect to the Ra dependence of Nu and Re we …
The origin of the power-law decay measured in the power spectra of low Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection near the onset of chaos is addressed using long time numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations in cylindrical domains. The power-law is found to arise from quasi-discontinuous changes in the slope of the time series of the heat transport associated with the nucleation of dislocation pairs and roll pinch-off events. For larger frequencies, the power spectra decay exponentially as expected for time continuous deterministic dynamics.
We present the detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns near the onset of zero Prandtl number Rayleigh Bénard convection. We employ both direct numerical simulation and a low-dimensional model ensuring qualitative agreement between the two. Various flow patterns originate from a stationary square observed at a higher Rayleigh number through a series of bifurcations starting from a pitchfork followed by a Hopf and finally a homoclinic bifurcation as the Rayleigh number is reduced to the critical value. Global chaos, intermittency, and crises are observed near the onset.
The Rayleigh-Benard theory by Grossmann and Lohse [J. Fluid Mech. 407, 27 (2000)] is extended towards very large Prandtl numbers Pr. The Nusselt number Nu is found here to be independent of Pr. However, for fixed Rayleigh numbers Ra> 10^{10} a maximum around Pr= 2 in the Nu(Pr)-dependence is predicted which is absent for lower Ra. We moreover offer the full functional dependences of Nu(Ra,Pr) and Re(Ra,Pr) within this extended theory, rather than only giving the limiting power laws as done previously. This enables us to more realistically describe the transitions between the various scaling re…
We investigate oscillatory instability and routes to chaos in Rayleigh-Bénard convection of electrically conducting fluids in presence of external horizontal magnetic field. Three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the governing equations are performed for the investigation. DNS shows that oscillatory instability is inhibited by the magnetic field. The supercritical Rayleigh number for the onset of oscillation is found to scale with the Chandrasekhar number $\mathrm{Q}$ as $\mathrm{Q}^α$ in DNS with $α= 1.8$ for low Prandtl numbers ($\mathrm{Pr}$). Most interestingly, DNS shows …
The complex evolution of turbulent mixing in Rayleigh-Taylor convection is studied in terms of eddy diffusiviy models for the mean temperature profile. It is found that a non-linear model, derived within the general framework of Prandtl mixing theory, reproduces accurately the evolution of turbulent profiles obtained from numerical simulations. Our model allows to give very precise predictions for the turbulent heat flux and for the Nusselt number in the ultimate state regime of thermal convection.
We investigate the onset of convective instability and subsequent transitions near it in Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) of electrically conducting low Prandtl-number (Pr) fluids in the simultaneous presence of rotation about the vertical axis and external uniform horizontal magnetic field with free-slip boundary conditions. Both three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) and low dimensional modeling of the system have been performed for the investigation. DNS results show a plethora of patterns near the onset of convection for weak magnetic field. Most interestingly, the Nusselt nu…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection displays a large-scale order in the form of rolls and cells on lengths larger than the layer height once the fluctuations of temperature and velocity are removed. These turbulent superstructures are reminiscent of the patterns close to the onset of convection. They are analyzed by numerical simulations of turbulent convection in fluids at different Prandtl number ranging from 0.005 to 70 and for Rayleigh numbers up to $10^7$. For each case, we identify characteristic scales and times that separate the fast, small-scale turbulent fluctuations from the gradua…
In this paper we present various convective states of zero-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and a 27-mode low-dimensional model containing the energetic modes of DNS. The origin of these convective states have been explained using bifurcation analysis. The system is chaotic at the onset itself with three coexisting chaotic attractors that are born at two codimension-2 bifurcation points. One of the bifurcation points with a single zero eigenvalue and a complex pair $(0,\pm i ω)$ generates chaotic attractors and associated periodic, quasiperiodi…
It is shown, by the means of distributed chaos approach and using the experimental data, that at very large Rayleigh number $Ra > 10^{14}$ and Prandtl number $Pr \sim 1$ the Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence can undergo a transition related to spontaneous breaking of the fundamental Lagrangian relabeling symmetry. Due to the Noether's theorem helicity plays central role in this process. After the transition the temperature spectrum has a stretched exponential form $E (k) \propto \exp(-k/k_β)^β$ with $β=2/5$ both at the cell midplain and at the near-wall (low boundary) regions. There is a similarity b…
We investigate numerically the statistical properties of the large scale flow in Rayleigh--Bénard convection. By using an external random perturbation on the temperature field, we were able to decrease the effective Prandtl number of the flow while keeping the Rayleigh number relatively small; this increases the Reynolds number thus making possible the numerical investigation of the long--term flow statistics. We also propose a simple and quantitative explanation for the experimental findings on the statistical distribution of flow reversals and reorientations.
We compute the continuum thermo-hydrodynamical limit of a new formulation of lattice kinetic equations for thermal compressible flows, recently proposed in [Sbragaglia et al., J. Fluid Mech. 628 299 (2009)]. We show that the hydrodynamical manifold is given by the correct compressible Fourier- Navier-Stokes equations for a perfect fluid. We validate the numerical algorithm by means of exact results for transition to convection in Rayleigh-Bénard compressible systems and against direct comparison with finite-difference schemes. The method is stable and reliable up to temperature jumps between t…
We present the first large scale numerical simulation of three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection near onset, under free-free boundary conditions for a fluid of Prandtl number $σ=0.5$. We find that a spatiotemporally chaotic state emerges immediately above onset, which we investigate as a function of the reduced control parameter $ε$. We conclude that the transition from conduction to spatiotemporal chaos is second order and of ``mean field'' character. We also present a simple theory for the time-averaged convective current. Finally, we show that the time-averaged structure factor satisfi…
We used the time correlation of shadowgraph images to determine the angle $Θ$ of the horizontal component of the plume velocity above (below) the center of the bottom (top) plate of a cylindrical Rayleigh-Bénard cell of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1$ ($D$ is the diameter and $L \simeq 87$ mm the height) in the Rayleigh-number range $7\times 10^7 \leq R \leq 3\times 10^{9}$ for a Prandtl number $σ= 6$. We expect that $Θ$ gives the direction of the large-scale circulation. It oscillates time-periodically. Near the top and bottom plates $Θ(t)$ has the same frequency but is anti-correlated.
It is shown using three series of Rayleigh number simulations of varying aspect ratio AR and Prandtl number Pr that the normalized dissipation at the wall, while significantly greater than 1, approaches a constant dependent upon AR and Pr. It is also found that the peak velocity, not the mean square velocity, obeys the experimental scaling of Ra^{0.5}. The scaling of the mean square velocity is closer to Ra^{0.46}, which is shown to be consistent with experimental measurements and the numerical results for the scaling of Nu and the temperature if there are strong correlations between the veloc…
$SF_6$ in the vicinity of its critical point was used to study turbulent convection up to exceptionally high Rayleigh numbers, $Ra$, (up to $5\cdot 10^{14}$) and to verify for the first time the generalized scaling laws for the heat transport and the large scale circulation velocity as a function of $Ra$ and the Prandtl number, $Pr$, in very wide range of these parameters. The both scaling laws obtained are consistent with theoretical predictions by B.Shraiman and E.Siggia, Phys. Rev. {\bf A 42}, 3650 (1990).
In this paper we investigate two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulation in Boussinesq fluids of Prandtl number $P = 6.8$ confined between thermally conducting plates. We show through the simulation that in a small range of reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($770 < r < 890$) the 2D rolls move chaotically in a direction normal to the roll axis. The lateral shift of the rolls may lead to global flow reversal of the convective motion. The chaotic traveling rolls are observed in simulation with {\it free-slip} as well as {\it no-slip} boundary conditions on the velo…
The phenomenon of irregular cessation and subsequent reversal of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is theoretically analysed. The force and thermal balance on a single plume detached from the thermal boundary layer yields a set of coupled nonlinear equations, whose dynamics is related to the Lorenz equations. For Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers in the range $10^{-2} \leq \Pr \leq 10^{3}$ and $10^{7} \leq \Ra \leq 10^{12}$, the model has the following features: (i) chaotic reversals may be exhibited at Ra $\geq 10^{7}$; (ii) the Reynolds number based on the root m…
We present measurements of the Nusselt number $\cal N$ as a function of the Rayleigh number $R$ in cylindrical cells with aspect ratios $0.5 \leq Γ\equiv D/d \leq 12.8$ ($D$ is the diameter and $d$ the height). We used acetone with a Prandtl number $σ= 4.0$ for $10^5 \alt R \alt 4\times10^{10}$. A fit of a powerlaw ${\cal N} = {\cal N}_0 R^{γ_{eff}}$ over limited ranges of $R$ yielded values of $γ_{eff}$ from 0.275 near $R = 10^7$ to 0.300 near $R = 10^{10}$. The data are inconsistent with a single powerlaw for ${\cal N}(R)$. For $R > 10^7$ they are consistent with ${\cal N} = a σ^{-1/12} R^{1…
