A study is presented of fully discretized lattice equations associated with the KdV hierarchy. Loop group methods give a systematic way of constructing discretizations of the equations in the hierarchy. The lattice KdV system of Nijhoff et al. arises from the lowest order discretization of the trivial, lowest order equation in the hierarchy, b_t=b_x. Two new discretizations are also given, the lowest order discretization of the first nontrivial equation in the hierarchy, and a "second order" discretization of b_t=b_x. The former, which is given the name "full lattice KdV" has the (potential) KdV equation as a standard continuum limit. For each discretization a Backlund transformation is given and soliton content analyzed. The full lattice KdV system has, like KdV itself, solitons of all speeds, whereas both other discretizations studied have a limited range of speeds, being discretizations of an equation with solutions only of a fixed speed.
Casorati determinant solution to the non-autonomous discrete KdV equation is constructed by using the bilinear formalism. We present three different bilinear formulations which have different origins.
Various solutions to the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation are discussed. We first derive the bilinear difference equations of Hirota type of the discrete Schwarzian KP equation, which is decomposed into three discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. We then construct two kinds of solutions in terms of the Casorati determinant. We derive the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation on an inhomogeneous lattice and its solutions by a reduction process. We finally discuss the solutions in terms of the $τ$ functions of some Painlevé systems.
A multidimensionally consistent generalisation of Hirota's discrete KdV equation is proposed, it is a quad equation defined by a polynomial that is quadratic in each variable. Soliton solutions and interpretation of the model as superposition principle are given. It is discussed how an important property of the defining polynomial, a factorisation of discriminants, appears also in the few other known discrete integrable multi-quadratic models.
We propose the algebro-geometric mothod of construction of solutions of the discrete KP equation over a finite field. We also perform the corresponding reduction to the finite field version of the discrete KdV equation. We write down formulas which allow to construct multisoliton solutions of the equations starting from vacuum wave functions on arbitrary non-singular curve.
We present a new construction related to systems of polynomials which are consistent on a cube. The consistent polynomials underlie the integrability of discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg- de Vries-type (KdV-type). The construction reported here associates a Schwarzian variable to such systems. In the generic case, including the primary model Q4, the new variable satisfies the lattice Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equat ion in three dimensions. For the degenerate sub-cases of Q4 the same construction reveals an invertible transformation to t…
A sequence of canonical conservation laws for all the Adler-Bobenko-Suris equations is derived and is employed in the construction of a hierarchy of master symmetries for equations H1-H3, Q1-Q3. For the discrete potential and Schwarzian KdV equations it is shown that their local generalized symmetries and non-local master symmetries in each lattice direction form centerless Virasoro type algebras. In particular, for the discrete potential KdV, the structure of its symmetry algebra is explicitly given. Interpreting the hierarchies of symmetries of equations H1-H3, Q1-Q3 as differential-differen…
We consider multiple lattices and functions defined on them. We introduce slow varying conditions for functions defined on the lattice and express the variation of a function in terms of an asymptotic expansion with respect to the slow varying lattices. We use these results to perform the multiple--scale reduction of the lattice potential Korteweg--de Vries equation.
We construct explicit solutions to continuous motion of discrete plane curves described by a semi-discrete potential modified KdV equation. Explicit formulas in terms the $τ$ function are presented. Bäcklund transformations of the discrete curves are also discussed. We finally consider the continuous limit of discrete motion of discrete plane curves described by the discrete potential modified KdV equation to motion of smooth plane curves characterized by the potential modified KdV equation.
The $N=2 \;a=-2$ supersymmetric KdV equation is studied. A Darboux transformation and the corresponding Bäcklund transformation are constructed for this equation. Also, a nonlinear superposition formula is worked out for the associated Bäcklund transformation. The Bäcklund transformation and the related nonlinear superposition formula are used to construct integrable super semi-discrete and full discrete systems. The continuum limits of these discrete systems are also considered.
Hirota bilinear form and multisoliton solution for semidiscrete and fully discrete (difference-difference) versions of supersymmetric KdV equation found by Xue, Levi and Liu [1] is presented. The solitonic interaction term displays a fermionic dressing factor as in the continuous supersymmetric case. Using bilinear equations it is shown also that there can be constructed a new integrable semidiscrete (and fully discrete) version of supersymmetric KdV which has simpler bilinear form but more complicated interaction dressing. Its continuum limit is also computed.

We identify a periodic reduction of the non-autonomous lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation with the additive discrete Painlevé equation with $E^{(1)}_6$ symmetry. We present a description of a set of symmetries of the reduced equations and their relations to the symmetries of the discrete Painlevé equation. Finally, we exploit the simple symmetric form of the reduced equations to find rational and hypergeometric solutions of this discrete Painlevé equation.
In \cite{RH3} Rasin and Hydon suggested a way to construct an infinite number of conservation laws for the discrete KdV equation (dKdV), by repeated application of a certain symmetry to a known conservation law. It was not decided, however, whether the resulting conservation laws were distinct and nontrivial. In this paper we obtain the following results: (1) We give an alternative method to construct an infinite number of conservation laws using a discrete version of the Gardner transformation. (2) We give a direct proof that the Rasin-Hydon conservation laws are indeed distinct and nontrivia…
Hirota's discrete KdV equation is an integrable partial difference equation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, which approaches the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in a continuum limit. In this paper, we show that its multiplicative-discrete versions have the special solutions given by the solutions of $q$-Painlevé equations of types $A_J^{(1)}$ $(J=3,4,5,6)$.
We study the integrability of mappings obtained as reductions of the discrete Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and of two copies of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation (pKdV). We show that the mappings corresponding to the discrete KdV equation, which can be derived from the latter, are completely integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. The mappings associated with two copies of the pKdV equation are also shown to be integrable.
The Hirota-Miwa equation can be written in `nonlinear' form in two ways: the discrete KP equation and, by using a compatible continuous variable, the discrete potential KP equation. For both systems, we consider the Darboux and binary Darboux transformations, expressed in terms of the continuous variable, and obtain exact solutions in Wronskian and Grammian form. We discuss reductions of both systems to the discrete KdV and discrete potential KdV equations, respectively, and exploit this connection to find the Darboux and binary Darboux transformations and exact solutions of these equations.
The spectral transformation technique for symmetric R_{II} polynomials is developed. Use of this technique reveals that the nonautonomous discrete modified KdV (nd-mKdV) lattice is directly connected with the R_{II} chain. Hankel determinant solutions to the semi-infinite nd-mKdV lattice are also presented.
A simple version of the Segal-Wilson map from the SL(2,C) loop group to a class of solutions of the KdV hierarchy is given, clarifying certain aspects of this map. It is explained how the known symmetries, including Backlund transformations, of KdV arise from simple, field independent, actions on the loop group. A variety of issues in understanding the algebraic structure of Backlund transformations are thus resolved.
The lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation (LKdV) is a partial difference equation in two independent variables, which possesses many properties that are analogous to those of the celebrated Korteweg-de Vries equation. These include discrete soliton solutions, Backlund transformations and an associated linear problem, called a Lax pair, for which it provides the compatibility condition. In this paper, we solve the initial value problem for the LKdV equation through a discrete implementation of the inverse scattering transform method applied to the Lax pair. The initial value used for the…
The goal of this paper is to present a solution of the cellular automaton associated with the discrete KdV equation using algebro-geometric solution of the discrete KP equation over a finite field out of a hyperelliptic curve.
For the supersymmetric KdV equation, a proper Darboux transformation is presented. This Darboux transformation leads to the Bäcklund transformation found early by Liu and Xie \cite{liu2}. The Darboux transformation and the related Bäcklund transformation are used to construct integrable super differential-difference and difference-difference systems. The continuum limits of these discrete systems and of their Lax pairs are also considered.
It has been unknown whether Hirota's discrete Korteweg-de Vries equation and the lattice sine-Gordon equation have the consistency around a cube (CAC) property. In this paper, we show that they have the CAC property. Moreover, we also show that they can be extended to systems on the 3-dimensional integer lattice.
We introduce a new integrable system hierarchy which is a restriction of the AKNS nxn hierarchy coming from an unusual splitting of the loop algebra. This splitting comes from an automorphism of the loop algebra instead of an automorphism of SL(n,C). It is known that the 2x2 KdV is the standard KdV hierarchy.
KdV6 equation can be described as the Kupershmidt deformation of the KdV equation (see 2008, Phys. Lett. A 372: 263). In this paper, starting from the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the discrete integrable system, we propose a generalized Kupershmidt deformation to construct new discrete integrable systems. Toda hierarchy, Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy and Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy are considered. The Lax representations for these new deformed systems are presented. The generalized Kupershmidt deformation for the discrete integrable systems provides a new way to construct new discrete integrable syst…
Based on the matrix-resolvent approach, for an arbitrary solution to the discrete KdV hierarchy, we define the tau-function of the solution, and compare it with another tau-function of the solution defined via reduction of the Toda lattice hierarchy. Explicit formulae for generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-functions are then obtained, and applications to enumeration of ribbon graphs with even valencies and to the special cubic Hodge integrals are considered.
In this paper, we develop discrete versions of Darboux transformations and Crum's theorems for two second order difference equations. The difference equations are discretised versions (using Darboux transformations) of the spectral problems of the KdV quation, and of the modified KdV equation or sine-Gordon equation. Considering the discrete dynamics created by Darboux transformations for the difference equations, one obtains the lattice potential KdV equation, the lattice potential modified KdV equation and the lattice Schwarzian KdV equation, that are prototypes of integrable lattice equatio…
We study the integrability of a family of birational maps obtained as reductions of the discrete Hirota equation, which are related to travelling wave solutions of the lattice KdV equation. In particular, for reductions corresponding to waves moving with rational speed N/M on the lattice, where N,M are coprime integers, we prove the Liouville integrability of the maps when N + M is odd, and prove various properties of the general case. There are two main ingredients to our construction: the cluster algebra associated with each of the Hirota bilinear equations, which provides invariant (pre)sym…
We propose the functions defined by the maximum of a discrete quadratic form and satisfying the ultradiscrete KdV equation. These functions includes not only soliton solutions but also pseudo-periodic solutions. In the proof, we employ some facts of discrete convex analysis.
For a generalized super KdV equation, three Darboux transformations and the corresponding Bäcklund transformations are constructed. The compatibility of these Darboux transformations leads to three discrete systems and their Lax representations. The reduction of one of the Bäcklund-Darboux transformations and the corresponding discrete system are considered for Kupershmidt's super KdV equation. When all the odd variables vanish, a nonlinear superposition formula is obtained for Levi's Bäcklund transformation for the KdV equation.
A new integrable nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary difference equation is presented which can be considered to be a discrete analogue of the Painleve V equation. Its derivation is based on the similarity reduction on the two-dimensional lattice of integrable partial difference equations of KdV type. The new equation which is referred to as GDP (generalised discrete Painleve equation) contains various ``discrete Painleve equations'' as subcases for special values/limits of the parameters, some of which were already given before in the literature. The general solution of the GDP can be expressed …
In this paper, the semi-discrete Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy is shown in spirit composed by the Ablowitz-Ladik flows under certain combinations. Furthermore, we derive its explicit Lax pairs and infinitely many conservation laws, which are non-trivial in light of continuum limit. Reductions of the semi-discrete AKNS hierarchy are investigated to include the semi-discrete Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the semi-discrete modified KdV, and the semi-discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchies as its special cases. Finally, under the uniform continuum limit we introduce in the paper, the a…
In this paper, we construct a Grassmann extension of a Yang-Baxter map which first appeared in [16] and can be considered as a lift of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries (dpKdV) equation. This noncommutative extension satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation, and it admits a $3 \times 3$ Lax matrix. Moreover, we show that it can be squeezed down to a system of lattice equations which possesses a Lax representation and whose bosonic limit is the dpKdV equation. Finally, we consider commutative analogues of the constructed Yang-Baxter map and its associated quad-graph system, and we discuss thei…

Some of the well-known convergence acceleration algorithms, when viewed as two-variable difference equations, are equivalent to discrete soliton equations. It is shown that the $η-$algorithm is nothing but the discrete KdV equation. In addition, one generalized version of the $ρ-$algorithm is considered to be integrable discretization of the cylindrical KdV equation.
We study the distribution of singularities for partial difference equations, in particular, the bilinear and nonlinear form of the discrete version of the Korteweg-de Vries (dKdV) equation. By the Laurent property, the irreducibility, and the co-primeness of the terms of the bilinear dKdV equation, we clarify the relationship of these properties with the appearance of zeros in the time evolution. The results are applied to the nonlinear dKdV equation and we formulate the famous integrability criterion (singularity confinement test) for nonlinear partial difference equations with respect to the…
The discrete KdV (dKdV) equation, the pinnacle of discrete integrability, is often thought to possess the singularity confinement property because it confines on an elementary quadrilateral. Here we investigate the singularity structure of the dKdV equation through reductions of the equation, obtained for initial conditions on a staircase with height 1, and show that it is much more subtle than one might assume. We first study the singularities for the mappings obtained after reduction and contrast these with the singularities that arise in non-integrable generalizations of those mappings. We …
Starting from the complete integrable lattice super-KdV equation, two super-mappings are obtained by performing a travelling-wave reduction. The first one is linear and the second is a four dimensional super-QRT mapping containing both Grassmann commuting and anti-commuting dependent variables. Adapting the classical "staircase" method to the Lax super-matrices of the lattice super-KdV equation, we compute the Lax super-matrices of the mapping and the two invariants; the first one is a pure nilpotent commuting quantity and the second one is given by an elliptic curve containing nilpotent commu…
We construct generalized solutions to the ultradiscrete KdV equation, including the so-called negative solition solutions. The method is based on the ultradiscretization of soliton solutions to the discrete KdV equation with gauge transformation. The conserved quantities of the ultradiscrete KdV equation are shown to be constructed in a similar way to those for the box-ball system.
The paper presents two results. First it is shown how the discrete potential modified KdV equation and its Lax pairs in matrix form arise from the Hirota-Miwa equation by a 2-periodic reduction. Then Darboux transformations and binary Darboux transformations are derived for the discrete potential modified KdV equation and it is shown how these may be used to construct exact solutions.
Many multi-dimensional consistent discrete systems have soliton solutions with nonzero backgrounds, which brings difficulty in the investigation of integrable characteristics. In this letter we derive infinitely many conserved quantities for the lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation. The derivation is based on the fact that the scattering data $a(z)$ is independent of discrete space and time and the analytic property of Jost solutions of the discrete Schrödinger spectral problem. The obtained conserved densities are different from those in the known literatures. They are asymptotic to z…
Supersymmetry is formulated for integrable models based on the $sl(2|1)$ loop algebra endowed with a principal gradation. The symmetry transformations which have half-integer grades generate supersymmetry. The $sl(2|1)$ loop algebra leads to N=2 supersymmetric mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations. The corresponding N=1 mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations are obtained via reduction induced by twisted automorphism. Our method allows for a description of a non-local symmetry structure of supersymmetric integrable models.
Ultradiscrete soliton equations and Bäcklund transformation for a generalized soliton solution are presented. The equations include the ultradiscrete KdV equation or the ultradiscrete Toda equation in a special case. We also express the solution by the ultradiscrete permanent, which is defined by ultradiscretizing the signature-free determinant, that is, the permanent. Moreover, we discuss a relation between Bäcklund transformations for discrete and ultradiscrete KdV equations.
A recently proposed discrete version of the Schrodinger spectral problem is considered. The whole hierarchy of differential-difference nonlinear evolution equations associated to this spectral problem is derived. It is shown that a discrete version of the KdV, sine-Gordon and Liouville equations are included and that the so called `inverse' class in the hierarchy is local. The whole class of related Darboux and Backlund transformations is also exhibited.
We propose a method by which to examine all possible partial difference Lax pairs that consist of 'two by two' discrete linear problems, where the matrices contain one separable term in each entry. We thereby derive new, higher-order versions of the lattice sine-Gordon and lattice modified KdV equations, while showing that there can be no other partial difference equations associated with this type of Lax pair.
The discrete equations of motion for the quantum mappings of KdV type are given in terms of the Sklyanin variables (which are also known as quantum separated variables). Both temporal (discrete-time) evolutions and spatial (along the lattice at a constant time-level) evolutions are considered. In the classical limit, the temporal equations reduce to the (classical) discrete Dubrovin equations as given in a previous publication. The reconstruction of the original dynamical variables in terms of the Sklyanin variables is also achieved.
We study the singularities of a modified lattice Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation and show that it admits three families of singularities, with analogous properties to those found in the lattice KdV equation. The first family consists of localised singularities which can occupy an arbitrarily large domain but which are, nevertheless, always confined. The second family consists of one or more lines extending all the way from the south-west to the north-east on the plane, involving a single finite value that depends on the parameter that appears in the equation. We argue that the infinite extent …
Using the group-theoretical approach to the inverse scattering method the supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation is obtained by application of the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction to osp(1|2) loop superalgebra. The direct and inverse scattering problems are discussed for the corresponding Lax pair.
An alternative method of constructing the formal diagonalization for the discrete Lax operators is proposed which can be used to calculate conservation laws and in some cases generalized symmetries for discrete dynamical systems. Discrete potential KdV equation, lattice derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, dressing chain, Toda lattice are considered as illustrative examples. For the Toda lattice on a quad graph corresponding to the Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ infinite series of conservation laws are described. Systems of quad graph equations are represented including lattice versions of the …
We study the structure of singularities in the discrete Korteweg-deVries (d-KdV) equation. Four different types of singularities are identified. The first type corresponds to localised, `confined', singularities, the confinement constraints for which provide the integrability conditions for generalisations of d-KdV. Two other types of singularities are of infinite extent and consist of oblique lines of infinities, possibly alternating with lines of zeros. The fourth type of singularity corresponds to horizontal strips where the product of the values on vertically adjacent points is equal to 1.…
We present an alternative integrable discretization of differential-difference KdV equation based on Hirota bilinear formalism. It is shown that using two tau functions the direct discretisation of the bilinear equations gives immediately the well known discrete KdV equation. We comment also on integrability and relation with the classical bilinear form involving only one tau function.
In a prior paper the authors obtained a four-dimensional discrete integrable dynamical system by the traveling wave reduction from the lattice super-KdV equation in a case of finitely generated Grassmann algebra. The system is a coupling of a Quispel-Roberts-Thompson map and a linear map but does not satisfy the singularity confinement criterion. It was conjectured that the dynamical degree of this system grows quadratically. In this paper, constructing a rational variety where the system is lifted to an algebraically stable map and using the action of the map on the Picard lattice, we prove t…
