We construct generalized solutions to the ultradiscrete KdV equation, including the so-called negative solition solutions. The method is based on the ultradiscretization of soliton solutions to the discrete KdV equation with gauge transformation. The conserved quantities of the ultradiscrete KdV equation are shown to be constructed in a similar way to those for the box-ball system.
We propose the functions defined by the maximum of a discrete quadratic form and satisfying the ultradiscrete KdV equation. These functions includes not only soliton solutions but also pseudo-periodic solutions. In the proof, we employ some facts of discrete convex analysis.
We solve the direct scattering problem for the ultradiscrete Korteweg de Vries (udKdV) equation, over $\mathbb R$ for any potential with compact (finite) support, by explicitly constructing bound state and non-bound state eigenfunctions. We then show how to reconstruct the potential in the scattering problem at any time, using an ultradiscrete analogue of a Darboux transformation. This is achieved by obtaining data uniquely characterising the soliton content and the `background' from the initial potential by Darboux transformation.
We investigate the ultradiscrete KdV equation with periodic boundary conditions where the two parameters (capacity of the boxes and that of the carrier) are arbitrary integers. We give a criterion to allow a periodic boundary condition when initial states take arbitrary integer values. Conserved quantities are constructed for the periodic systems. Construction of background solutions of the periodic ultradiscrete KdV equation from the Jacobi theta function is also presented.
We investigate the multi-soliton solutions to the generalized discrete KdV equation. In some cases a soliton with smaller amplitude moves faster than that with larger amplitude unlike the soliton solutions of the KdV equation. This phenomenon is intuitively understood from its ultradiscrete limit, where the system turns to the box ball system with a carrier. We analyse the non-abelian algebra and the supersymmetric cohomology associated to the local and non-local conserved charges of N=1 SKdV under Poisson brackets. We then consider the breaking of the supersymmetry and obtain an integrable model in terms of Clifford algebra valued fields. We discuss the remaining conserved charges of the new system and the stability of the solitonic solutions.
We study the singularities of a modified lattice Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation and show that it admits three families of singularities, with analogous properties to those found in the lattice KdV equation. The first family consists of localised singularities which can occupy an arbitrarily large domain but which are, nevertheless, always confined. The second family consists of one or more lines extending all the way from the south-west to the north-east on the plane, involving a single finite value that depends on the parameter that appears in the equation. We argue that the infinite extent …
The quasi-integrable KdV equation has been obtained from the corresponding deformation of the Hamiltonian for the usual KdV system. Following suitable gauge-fixing, it has been found that the quasi-conservation condition is satisfied and an infinite number of anomalous conservation laws are obtained, with some containing possible conserved charges. Judicious choice of deformation of the Hamiltonian clearly leads to a conserved charge, manifesting quasi-integrability, but also creates a hierarchy of higher-derivative equations with at least one conserved charge. A particular quasi-deformation p…
Many multi-dimensional consistent discrete systems have soliton solutions with nonzero backgrounds, which brings difficulty in the investigation of integrable characteristics. In this letter we derive infinitely many conserved quantities for the lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation. The derivation is based on the fact that the scattering data $a(z)$ is independent of discrete space and time and the analytic property of Jost solutions of the discrete Schrödinger spectral problem. The obtained conserved densities are different from those in the known literatures. They are asymptotic to z…
We study a 2-dimensional Box-Ball system which is a ultradiscrete analog of the discrete KP equation. We construct an algorithm to calculate the fundamental cycle, which is an important conserved quantity of the 2-dim. Box-Ball system with periodic boundary condition, by using the tropical curve theory.
This is a summary of progress made in understanding the occurrence and properties of local, conserved, commuting charges in non-linear sigma-models, including principal chiral models (PCMs) and WZW models. A gauged bi-differential calculus over an associative (and not necessarily commutative) algebra A is an N-graded left A-module with two covariant derivatives acting on it which, as a consequence of certain (e.g., nonlinear differential) equations, are flat and anticommute. As a consequence, there is an iterative construction of generalized conserved currents. We associate a gauged bi-differential calculus with the Korteweg-de-Vries equation and use it to compute conserved densities of this equation.
A noncommutative version of the (anti-) self-dual Yang-Mills equations is shown to be related via dimensional reductions to noncommutative formulations of the generalized (SO(3)/SO(2)) nonlinear Schrodinger (NS) equations, of the super-Korteweg- de Vries (super-KdV) as well as of the matrix KdV equations. Noncommutative extensions of their linear systems and bicomplexes associated to conserved quantities are discussed.
An extension of the super Korteweg-de Vries integrable system in terms of operator valued functions is obtained. In particular the extension contains the $N=1$ Super KdV and coupled systems with functions valued on a symplectic space. We introduce a Miura transformation for the extended system and obtain its hamiltonian structure. We also obtain an extended Gardner transformation which allows to find an infinite number of conserved quantities of the extended system.
We construct a deformation quantized version (ncKdV) of the KdV equation which possesses an infinite set of conserved densities. Solutions of the ncKdV are obtained from solutions of the KdV equation via a kind of Seiberg-Witten map. The ncKdV is related to a modified ncKdV equation by a noncommutative Miura transformation.
According to a theorem of Treves, the conserved functionals of the KdV equation vanish on each formal Laurent series 1/x^2 + u0 + u2 x^2 + u3 x^3 + >... . We propose a new, very simple geometrical proof for this statement.
We examine the integrability of two models used for the interaction of long and short waves in dispersive media. One is more classical but arguably cannot be derived from the underlying water wave equations, while the other one was recently derived. We use the method of Zakharov and Schulman to attempt to construct conserved quantities for these systems at different orders in the magnitude of the solutions. The coupled KdV-NLS model is shown to be nonintegrable, due to the presence of fourth-order resonances. A coupled real KdV - complex KdV system is shown to suffer the same fate, except for …
According to a theorem of Treves, the conserved functionals of the AKNS equation vanish on all pairs of formal Laurent series of a specified form, both of them with a pole of the first order. We propose a new and very simple proof for this statement, based on the theory of Bäcklund transformations; using the same method, we prove that the AKNS conserved functionals vanish on other pairs of Laurent series. The spirit is the same of our previous paper on the Treves theorem for the KdV, with some non trivial technical differences.
We found, through analytical and numerical methods, new towers of infinite number of asymptotically conserved charges for deformations of the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV). It is shown analytically that the standard KdV also exhibits some towers of infinite number of anomalous charges, and that their relevant anomalies vanish for $N-$soliton solution. Some deformations of the KdV model are performed through the Riccati-type pseudo-potential approach, and infinite number of exact non-local conservation laws is provided using a linear formulation of the deformed model. In order to check the d…
We consider the logarithmic Korteweg-de Vries (log-KdV) equation, which models solitary waves in anharmonic chains with Hertzian interaction forces. By using an approximating sequence of global solutions of the regularized generalized KdV equation in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ with conserved $L^2$ norm and energy, we construct a weak global solution of the log-KdV equation in a subset of $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This construction yields conditional orbital stability of Gaussian solitary waves of the log-KdV equation, provided uniqueness and continuous dependence of the constructed solution holds. Furthermore…
We investigate the quasi-integrability properties of various deformations of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, depending on two parameters $\varepsilon_1$ and $\varepsilon_2$, which include among them the regularized long-wave (RLW) and modified regularized long-wave (mRLW) equations. We show, using analytical and numerical methods, that the charges, constructed from a deformation of the zero curvature equation for the KdV equation, are asymptotically conserved for various values of the deformation parameters. By that we mean that, despite the fact that the charges do vary in time during t…
We consider the BRST invariant effective action of the non-abelian BF topological theory in $1+1$ dimensions with gauge group $Sl(2,\mathbb{R})$. By considering different gauge fixing conditions, the zero-curvature field equation give rise to several well known integrable equations. We prove that each integrable equation together with the associated ghost field evolution equation, obtained from the BF theory, is a BRST invariant system with an infinite sequence of BRST invariant conserved quantities. We construct explicitly the systems and the BRST transformation laws for the KdV sequence (inc…
We establish the explicit correspondence between the theory of soliton gases in classical integrable dispersive hydrodynamics, and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), the hydrodynamic theory for many-body quantum and classical integrable systems. This is done by constructing the GHD description of the soliton gas for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. We further predict the exact form of the free energy density and flux, and of the static correlation matrices of conserved charges and currents, for the soliton gas. For this purpose, we identify the solitons' statistics with that of classical pa…
The Korteweg-de Vries equation is known to yield a valid description of surface waves for waves of small amplitude and large wavelength. The equation features a number of conserved integrals, but there is no consensus among scientists as to the physical meaning of these integrals. In particular, it is not clear whether these integrals are related to the conservation of momentum or energy, and some researchers have questioned the conservation of energy in the dynamics governed by the equation. In this note it is shown that while exact energy conservation may not hold, if momentum and energy den…
We obtain an infinite sequence of bosonic non-local conserved quantities for the N=1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. It is generated from a bosonic non-local conserved quantity of Super Gardner equation. In distinction to the already known one with odd parity and dimension 1/2, it has even parity and dimension 1. It fits exactly in the supersymmetric cohomology in the space of conserved quantities that we also introduce here. Using results from this cohomology we obtain the Poisson bracket of several non-local conserved quantities, including the already known odd ones and the new ev…
The dual dynamics of Einstein gravity on AdS$_3$ supplemented with boundary conditions of KdV-type is identified. It corresponds to a two-dimensional field theory at the boundary, described by a novel action principle whose field equations are given by two copies of the "potential modified KdV equation". The asymptotic symmetries then transmute into the global Noether symmetries of the dual action, giving rise to an infinite set of commuting conserved charges, implying the integrability of the system. Noteworthy, the theory at the boundary is non-relativistic and possesses anisotropic scaling …
Utilizing some conservation laws of (1+1)-dimensional integrable local evolution systems, it is conjectured that higher dimensional integrable equations may be regularly constructed by a deformation algorithm. The algorithm can be applied to Lax pairs and higher order flows. In other words, if the original lower dimensional model is Lax integrable (possesses Lax pairs) and symmetry integrable (possesses infinitely many higher order symmetries), then the deformed higher order systems are also Lax integrable and symmetry integrable. For concreteness, the deformation algorithm is applied to the u…
We introduce a new integrable equation valued on a Cayley-Dickson (C-D) algebra. In the particular case in which the algebra reduces to the complex one the new interacting term in the equation cancells and the equation becomes the known Korteweg-de Vries equation. For each C-D algebra the equation has an infinite sequence of local conserved quantities. We obtain a Bäcklund transformation in the sense of Walhquist-Estabrook for the equation for any Cayley-Dickson algebra, and relate it to a generalized Gardner equation. From it, the infinite sequence of conserved quantities follows directly. We…
We consider periodic solutions to equations of Korteweg-Devries type. While the stability theory for periodic waves has received much some attention the theory is much less developed than the analogous theory for solitary wave stability, and appears to be mathematically richer. We prove an index theorem giving an exact count of the number of unstable eigenvalues of the linearized operator in terms of the number of zeros of the derivative of the traveling wave profile together with geometric information about a certain map between the constants of integration of the ordinary differential equati…
By considering the inhomogeneities of media, a generalized variable-coefficient Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (vc-KP) equation is investigated, which can be used to describe many nonlinear phenomena in fluid dynamics and plasma physics. In this paper, we systematically investigate complete integrability of the generalized vc-KP equation under a integrable constraint condition. With the aid of a generalized Bells polynomials, its bilinear formulism, bilinear Bäcklund transformations, Lax pairs and Darboux covariant Lax pairs are succinctly constructed, which can be reduced to the ones of several integ…
Lax pairs are a useful tool in finding conserved quantities of some dynamical systems. In this expository article, we give a motivated introduction to the idea of a Lax pair of matrices $(L,A)$, first for mechanical systems such as the linear harmonic oscillator, Toda chain, Eulerian rigid body and the Rajeev-Ranken model. This is then extended to Lax operators for one-dimensional field theories such as the linear wave and KdV equations and reformulated as a zero curvature representation via a $(U,V)$ pair which is illustrated using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The key idea is that of r…
