We study the singularities of a modified lattice Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation and show that it admits three families of singularities, with analogous properties to those found in the lattice KdV equation. The first family consists of localised singularities which can occupy an arbitrarily large domain but which are, nevertheless, always confined. The second family consists of one or more lines extending all the way from the south-west to the north-east on the plane, involving a single finite value that depends on the parameter that appears in the equation. We argue that the infinite extent of this singularity is not incompatible with the confinement property or with the integrability of the equation. The third family consists of horizontal strips in which the product of values on vertically adjacent lattice sites is equal to 1. In the case of the lattice KdV equation this type of singularity was dubbed `taishi'. The taishi for the modified lattice KdV equation can interact with singularities of the other two families, giving rise to very rich {and quite intricate} singularity structures. Nonetheless, these interactions can be described in a compact way through the formulation of a symbolic representation of the dynamics that is similar to, but in a sense, simpler than that for the KdV case. We give an interpretation of this symbolic representation in terms of a Box&Ball system related to the ultradiscrete mKdV equation. These results show that taishi-type singularities are not limited to the lattice KdV equation, but might very well be a general feature of integrable lattice equations with deep connections to other facets of their integrability.
The semi-classical Korteweg-deVries equation for step-like data is considered with a small parameter in front of the highest derivative. Using perturbation analysis Whitham theory is constructed to higher order. This allows the order one phase and the complete leading order solution to be obtained; the results are confirmed by extensive numerical calculations.
We study the structure of singularities in the discrete Korteweg-deVries (d-KdV) equation. Four different types of singularities are identified. The first type corresponds to localised, `confined', singularities, the confinement constraints for which provide the integrability conditions for generalisations of d-KdV. Two other types of singularities are of infinite extent and consist of oblique lines of infinities, possibly alternating with lines of zeros. The fourth type of singularity corresponds to horizontal strips where the product of the values on vertically adjacent points is equal to 1.…
The real, nonsingular elliptic solutions of the Korteweg-deVries equation are studied through the time dynamics of their poles in the complex plane. The dynamics of these poles is governed by a dynamical system with a constraint. This constraint is shown to be solvable for any finite number of poles located in the fundamental domain of the elliptic function, often in many different ways. Special consideration is given to those elliptic solutions that have a real nonsingular soliton limit.
Uniform estimates for the decay structure of the $n$-soliton solution of the Korteweg-deVries equation are obtained. The KdV equation, linearized at the $n$-soliton solution is investigated in a class $\WW$ consisting of sums of travelling waves plus an exponentially decaying residual term. An analog of the kernel of the time-independent equation is proposed, leading to solvability conditions on the inhomogeneous term. Estimates on the inversion of the linearized KdV equation at the $n$-soliton are obtained.
In this paper we obtain explicit lower bounds for the radius of convergence of the Painlevé expansions of the Korteweg-de-Vries equation around a movable singularity manifold ${\Cal S}$ in terms of the sup norms of the arbitrary functions involved. We use this estimate to prove the well-posedness of the singular Cauchy problem on ${\Cal S}$ in the form of continuous dependence of the meromorphic solution on the arbitrary data.
We derive a general theorem relating the energy, momentum and velocity of any solitary wave solution of the generalized KdV equation which enables us to relate the amplitude, width, and momentum to the velocity of these solutions. We obtain the general condition for linear and Lyapunov stability. We then obtain a two parameter family of exact solutions to these equations which include elliptic and hyper-elliptic compacton solutions. For this general family we explicitly verify both the theorem and the stability criteria.
Integrability of the quantum Boussinesq equation for c=-2 is demonstrated by giving a recursive algorithm for generating explicit expressions for the infinite number of commuting charges based on a reduction of the W(infinity) algebra. These charges exist for all spins $s \geq 2$. Likewise, reductions of the W(infinity/2) and W((1+infinity)/2) algebras yield the commuting quantum charges for the quantum KdV equation at c=-2 and c=1/2, respectively.
The acoustic scattering operator on the real line is mapped to a Schrödinger operator under the Liouville transformation. The potentials in the image are characterized precisely in terms of their scattering data, and the inverse transformation is obtained as a simple, linear quadrature. An existence theorem for the associated Harry Dym flows is proved, using the scattering method. The scattering problem associated with the Camassa-Holm flows on the real line is solved explicitly for a special case, which is used to reduce a general class of such problems to scattering problems on finite interv…
We study characteristic Cauchy problems for the Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation $u_t=uu_x+u_{xxx}$, and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation $u_{yy}=\bigl(u_{xxx}+uu_x+u_t\bigr)_x$ with holomorphic initial data possessing nonnegative Taylor coefficients around the origin. For the KdV equation with initial value $u(0,x)=u_0(x)$, we show that there is no solution holomorphic in any neighbourhood of $(t,x)=(0,0)$ in ${\mathbb C}^2$ unless $u_0(x)=a_0+a_1x$. This also furnishes a nonexistence result for a class of $y$-independent solutions of the KP equation. We extend this to $y$-dependent ca…
Via a "tropical limit" (Maslov dequantization), Korteweg-deVries (KdV) solitons correspond to piecewise linear graphs in two-dimensional space-time. We explore this limit.
Third order nonlinear evolution equations, that is the Korteweg-deVries (KdV), modified Korteweg-deVries (mKdV) equation and other ones are considered: they all are connected via Baecklund transformations. These links can be depicted in a wide Baecklund Chart} which further extends the previous one constructed in [22]. In particular, the Baecklund transformation which links the mKdV equation to the KdV singularity manifold equation is reconsidered and the nonlinear equation for the KdV eigenfunction is shown to be linked to all the equations in the previously constructed Baecklund Chart. That …
We discuss the application of a variant of the method of simplest equation for obtaining exact traveling wave solutions of a class of nonlinear partial differential equations containing polynomial nonlinearities. As simplest equation we use differential equation for a special function that contains as particular cases trigonometric and hyperbolic functions as well as the elliptic function of Weierstrass and Jacobi. We show that for this case the studied class of nonlinear partial differential equations can be reduced to a system of two equations containing polynomials of the unknown functions.…
The Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with step boundary conditions is considered, with an emphasis on soliton dynamics. When one or more initial solitons are of sufficient size they can propagate through the step; in this case the phase shift is calculated via the inverse scattering transform. On the other hand, when the amplitude is too small they become trapped. In the trapped case the transmission coefficient of the associated associated linear Schrödinger equation can become large at a point exponentially close to the continuous spectrum. This point is referred to as a {\it pseudo-embedded …
The planar filament equation and its relation to the modified Korteweg-deVries equation are studied in the context of Poisson geometry. The structure of the planar filament equation is shown to be similar to that of the 3-D localized induction equation, previously studied by the authors.
The inverse scattering transform allows explicit construction of solutions to many physically significant nonlinear wave equations. Notably, this method can be extended to fractional nonlinear evolution equations characterized by anomalous dispersion using completeness of suitable eigenfunctions of the associated linear scattering problem. In anomalous diffusion, the mean squared displacement is proportional to $t^α$, $α>0$, while in anomalous dispersion, the speed of localized waves is proportional to $A^α$, where $A$ is the amplitude of the wave. Fractional extensions of the modified Kortewe…
We study soliton solutions of matrix Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations in a tropical limit, in which their support at fixed time is a planar graph and polarizations are attached to its constituting lines. There is a subclass of "pure line soliton solutions" for which we find that, in this limit, the distribution of polarizations is fully determined by a Yang-Baxter map. For a vector KP equation, this map is given by an R-matrix, whereas it is a non-linear map in case of a more general matrix KP equation. We also consider the corresponding Korteweg-deVries (KdV) reduction. Furthermore, expl…
Integrable fractional equations such as the fractional Korteweg-deVries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations are key to the intersection of nonlinear dynamics and fractional calculus. In this manuscript, the first discrete/differential difference equation of this type is found, the fractional integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This equation is linearized; special soliton solutions are found whose peak velocities exhibit more complicated behavior than other previously obtained fractional integrable equations. This equation is compared with the closely related fractional averaged…
We study the distribution of singularities for partial difference equations, in particular, the bilinear and nonlinear form of the discrete version of the Korteweg-de Vries (dKdV) equation. By the Laurent property, the irreducibility, and the co-primeness of the terms of the bilinear dKdV equation, we clarify the relationship of these properties with the appearance of zeros in the time evolution. The results are applied to the nonlinear dKdV equation and we formulate the famous integrability criterion (singularity confinement test) for nonlinear partial difference equations with respect to the…
The behavior of solutions of the finite-genus Whitham equations for the weak dispersion limit of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation is investigated analytically and numerically for piecewise-constant initial data. In particular, the dynamics of constant-amplitude initial conditions with one or more frequency jumps (i.e., piecewise linear phase) are considered. It is shown analytically and numerically that, for finite times, regions of arbitrarily high genus can be produced; asymptotically with time, however, the solution can be divided into expanding regions which are either of genu…
Assuming that there exist at least two fermionic parameters, the classical N= 1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries (SKdV) system can be transformed to some coupled bosonic systems. The boson fields in the bosonized SKdV (BSKdV) systems are defined on even Grassmann algebra. Due to the intrusion of other Grassmann parameters, the BSKdV systems are different from the usual non-supersymmetric integrable systems, and many more abundant solution structures can be unearthed. With the help of the singularity analysis, the Painlevé property of the BSKdV system is proved and a Bäcklund transformation (BT…
We study the Laurent property, the irreducibility and co-primeness of discrete integrable and non-integrable equations. First we study a discrete integrable equation related to the Somos-4 sequence, and also a non-integrable equation as a comparison. We prove that the conditions of irreducibility and co-primeness hold only in the integrable case. Next, we generalize our previous results on the singularities of the discrete Korteweg-de Vries (dKdV) equation. In our previous paper (arXiv:1311.0060), we described the singularity confinement test (one of the integrability criteria) using the Laure…
We present the first detailed numerical study of the Toda equations in $2+1$ dimensions in the limit of long wavelengths, both for the hyperbolic and elliptic case. We first study the formal dispersionless limit of the Toda equations and solve initial value problems for the resulting system up to the point of gradient catastrophe. It is shown that the break-up of the solution in the hyperbolic case is similar to the shock formation in the Hopf equation, a $1+1$ dimensional singularity. In the elliptic case, it is found that the break-up is given by a cusp as for the semiclassical system of the…
